I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Melissa: I have been told that vitamin d from cholecalciferol is toxic and a possible carcinogen. That it can also be bad for cholesterol and other things. Can you elaborate on this? I can only use vegan supplements due to a mammal allergy (Alpha-Gal) and, the vitamin d I use is made from this. Am I using this when I should not be?   Rhonda: Hey, Doc! I'm a big fan of your show and relatively new to living a more holistic lifestyle. Your show has been an amazing resource for me. We moved recently and our new yard has several patches of poison ivy. I am extremely sensitive to the oil. One small point of contact and I swear the ivy rash is all over my body in the blink of an eye. What do you recommend to treat the rash? And what do you think would be the safest method for eliminating any growth around the yard? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!   Deanna: Dr.Cabral, Thanks for sharing your knowledge everyday with your podcasts and more! At the time of writing this my son is a little over one year. He suffers from severe food allergies to peanut, tree nut, sesame, and egg. If someone has H pylori and low stomach acid but no ulcers or reflux, what would be contra-indicative in taking Betaine HCL? The #1 Reason You're Not Getting Fitness Results

If you've experienced this… I want you to to know the #1 reason you're not getting results from my 40 years experience, and most of all from the most recent comments, DMs and group conversations we have. Said 100% with respect to us all… but we have failed to commit to any one. While we're complaining about the abundance of overwhelming and often conflicting information, we fail to realize it's us who continues to let it in.  Not saying that we should stop trying to learn or gain knowledge. You know I share summits with you from time to time. I share experts with you right here regularly who challenge your thinking. And I hosted a summit myself - one of the primary goals of that was to clarify for you the information and to probe guests for clarity wherever I sensed there could be confusion for you.  But if we keep letting ourselves stay stuck collecting data, we're procrastinating on changing anything.  You ARE choosing. You're choosing to stay stuck. You won't “accidentally” find your best path to health. You'll need to get a bit organized and choose what to take action on now, what you might take action on later, and what you're just throwing out because you've tried it, tested it and you know it doesn't work for you. This episode is to help you get out of your own way.  You're Not Getting Fitness Results? Keep Reading The only way I can do this episode is because I live it too. We can in any area of our lives sit in the middle of the room staring at the piles of things to be organized and picked up, put away, given away … and not know where to start and so never do. That, I believe may be hoarding.  In 2013 I quit. I quit my job on January 16. I was going to start paying college tuition in August. I had to put my house for sale in November. In tears in early December instead of putting up Christmas decorations I was taking down every picture carefully placed and planned from my walls because the realtor said a new buyer needs to be able to imagine their things on the wall.  For the entire first year of that new start I didn't have a clear step-by-step. Very few had done this before, few if any had created an online fitness site exclusively for women in menopause without any technical background or knowledge in hiring someone I could trust who had one.  It wasn't until year two, when I got a vision of what steps mattered most, what could wait and be tested later, that I started to be able to pay my own bills again instead of borrowing off of the sale of my home.  If you aren't at a “it has to work” place, you may not commit. I was all in. There was no net. If you've had cancer, if you've had a virus so scary it made you wonder… then you know. You commit. You do everything and focus on just the important things and other things fall off the radar.  You may need to do this for yourself. Take this podcast as your wake-up call. Trust me… you don't want to be pawning jewelry, or selling homes, asking relatives for a loan… or having to choose chemo or not… but we often do wait for a diagnosis. Decide right now if you will or you won't.  If you think it's inconvenient to eat differently than others in your house, if you think it's just too hard not to have a drink or 3 every night, and you're committed to that way of thinking, this may not be your episode. I may not be your girl.  A stale, overused and very appropriate on-point term: choose your hard.  The Number #1 Reason You're Not Getting Fitness Results…  You are not committing to one thing consistently for long enough to test it and only it. It's not all your fault. You hear high protein is necessary to build muscle for successful active aging.  You learn that the quality of essential amino acids in animal protein is higher per calorie than that of plant protein.  You hear that fasting is good for longevity due to autophagy.  Yet, you've heard the term low energy availability and identify with the concept of slowing down your metabolism because by eating less you will cause the body to breakdown muscle (especially while exercising more) and signal the body to burn less energy.  Often the #1 reason you're not getting fitness results is because you're not trying one thing at a time and committing to it. The problem? Isn't really an abundance of information. It's feeling a sense of urgency that really isn't there. Yes, it's important you make progress this YEAR, but it doesn't have to today. You can choose. Test it. And you can choose again.  The Reason you're not getting fitness results:  You are honing in on ONE thing that you hear, not necessarily the most important thing, and doing it at the omission of some important details.  For instance, all the experts whether they favor plant-based protein earlier in life Agree that at 60 or 65 high quality animal protein is a must for muscle synthesis to avoid sarcopenia resulting in frailty and falls. Experts who were not long ago suggesting fasted exercise who now are more in tune with maintaining and gaining lean muscle mass and bone density are all about fed exercise.  Yet, they do observe and recommend fasting. But what length? Should you do a 24 hour fast? Should you do 20 ? Even 18? How about we try 12-14 regularly first and stop snacking between meals and instead actually have meals.  Stop skipping, skimping or eating a “protein bar” pretending it is full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals the way a plate of food or even a smoothie will all the goodness of greens and healthy fats and light fruits and fiber.  What to Do When You're Not Getting Results If you're stuck between animal or plant protein… How much muscle do you have? Compare that to last year and the year before that. Don't have those measures? Get them started now. Because if you're nearly 60 like me, you're knocking on the door of muscle losses that accelerate to 1-2% a year unless we're doing the right things to avoid it. If you don't know for sure what the right things are, write down your choices. Because you sure DO know what is confusing and conflicting. Let's just agree that we have to stop complaining about being confused. We have to start taking responsibility for the information, for making choices, taking action and then being okay with making a new choice if it doesn't work. But no one is going to get “data” from an experiment of starting one thing and then not really doing it. The worst possible answer to a question, “How did it go with the magnesium this week?” or “What happened when you introduced dairy this week?” is… well it worked okay when I remembered or I had it a couple times but didn't notice anything.  These are NOT following the process for adding magnesium or re-introducing dairy, respectively.  When a client says, “I don't feel any better this week and I haven't lost weight” and then in reflection, 50% of the time she committed to what we agreed on and the rest of the time didn't, we can't expect to get results. What we have is data:  That it isn't urgent or important enough to matter She isn't committed to the changes she agreed to Take Action If You're Not Getting Fitness Results What I suggest is that you choose: Choose ONE thing to take action on.  Plot your plan ALL the way through.  Choose the next thing you might choose after you see this one through. Before you start anything MEASURE: Weight. Body fat %, and girth measurements. Record your subjective ratings of sleep, energy, libido, brain clarity, digestion.  Take 3-4 weeks at least to commit. Spend a little time deciding how you might have to tweak this experiment. Will you need to start smaller than your original goal? Will you be able to begin right away?  July 4 started walking 30 minutes a day. I might also strength training or do interval training. But I was walking before 8am every day. Some days I had to do it later because I missed it earlier. But I kept that promise. Some days I hiked and it was a longer walk.  A couple days it was chilly and rainy and I did indoor “walking.” Other days still I have had a hard time getting in a solid 30 but got 10 minutes in three times. But I stuck with it. What happened after 90 days? I'm hooked as I have been 3 other times in my life, body composition improved. Tone and definition and mood improved.  You can always move on. Choose the next. But do it.. Documenting. Do what you said you'd do consistently. Make sequential changes or tweaks if required. (With introduction of magnesium or with Betaine HCL, for instance). Don't just throw it out completely. Is it timing? Have you tried shorter instead of longer, tried it in the morning instead of at night?   No idea? Get a coach. Have an assessment. “Why am I bloated?” It's a conversation starter for many of the clients and students I've worked with. First, this. Midlife gut issues are common, not normal. Ironically, some of the healthy habits you have may be getting in the way of your optimal absorption of nutrients, digestion and or elimination.  In a recent previous episode, Protein Supplements: What, When & Why to Exercise for Women 40+ (make this a live link) Why Whey Protein Doesn't Work for Many at Midlife  What's important to keep in mind is that whey is notoriously the go-to. However, of the many whey protein powders on the market a very high percent were found to have toxins, sugars, or significant heavy metals (mercury and lead) and weren't third party tested before reaching the shelf. The advantage of whey and reason it's been so widely used by body builders is the rapid absorption – making it easy to digest pre and or post workout. It supports muscle repair and recovery and glycogen replacement very well.  It is dairy, however. A known inflammatory (especially if you have an autoimmune issue like arthritis, lupus or Hashimoto's) dairy is one of the first things that removed will improve health and decrease aches and pains and reduce inflammatory markers. Many women in midlife find with hormone changes – related to the hormone influence on the gut – dairy causes bloating, constipation, diarrhea, skin or joint pain, when it hadn't before.  Soy Protein for Women in Menopause Soy is another ingredient or protein option whether in powder or as milk, tofu, or other source. It however has a history as an obesogenic, goitrogenic, and estrogenic. That is, respectively it causes fat storage, disrupts thyroid function, and confuses the body to think it's estrogen.  Egg Protein Powder or Scrambled for Muscle Building? Less popular, but also on the shelves are egg protein powders. Eggs, though categorized differently than dairy, can also be highly likely to be food sensitivities. Occasionally, eggs may work. Daily though this is where the gut is subject over and over to a type of assault that will make it hard to heal from any existing gut issue. Even little bits of the right medicine make you well. By the same token, little bits regularly of the wrong food can make you sick or interfere with your optimal health.  You will find brown rice protein powder as well. This isn't a complete protein, will have more carbohydrate. But is cheaper, for a reason. I think of this as “filler.” If it's a part of protein powders, you want to check on the amount. Where is it listed in the ingredients.   What Are Non-Allergenic Protein Powder Options for Women Over 40? So, that leaves a hydrolyzed beef option for animal protein (complete essential amino acids but fewer than even a plant protein and a little bit more like collagen) and a plant-based option like Pea, pumpkin, or hemp. Pea, pumpkin and hemp are all complete proteins, meaning they have all the essential amino acids in them.  My choice for muscle is a Pea-based protein powder with added collagen and hemp hearts. Your best bet is of course animal protein and with it you'll reach a high amount of 3 particularly important EAA, called Branch Chain AAs. Those are leucine, isoleusine, and valine. The greatest of these is leucine. Ideally, you want 2.3-2.5 minimum of leucine per meal of 30 or more gm of protein. With animal protein that's easy. With plant it's not as easy. For older adults as well as for body builders and endurance athletes – three populations with greatest demand for protein for muscle preservation or building – high or at least adequate leucine levels are scientifically tied to better results.  Should you supplement with BCAAs.. For women not eating adequate calories or protein, the first step would be to take EAA. You need them all.  If you're eating all the protein you need in a day, the next step if you're struggling to gain muscle would be BCAA. If you skip from a low protein diet, or completely from plants to BCAAs the other building blocks of muscle aren't there. That's a shaky foundation.  Plan your meals around high quality protein. Plant or animal sources can all count. Consider what's missing. Is there a way to add this with food? Do you want or need to consider supplementation either in a powder – adding a shake to your meal, or in tablets – based on the feedback your body is giving you?  Track the Results of Supplements on Your Body Track your muscle. Track your body composition. Pay attention to digestive and elimination issues you may be passing off as “normal.” Keep in mind too that at 70 adults have about 10% of the stomach acid they did at 20. That is the very thing that helps you digest food. Eating stressed, rushed or doing 3 other things while eating? Even if you're not 70, there's a high chance you're not going to digest well.  A few things CAN help.  First, take a few deep breaths before you eat.  Turn other stimuli off.  Try bitters sprayed on the tongue or apple cider vinegar in water just before a meal to stimulate your own stomach acid.  If those don't help you, consider taking Betaine HCL before meals. The caps go in, then help stimulate gastric juices so you breakdown the proteins in foods and digest better. Many notice within days they experience less bloating after meals. My questions are about Vit A toxicity. In April I started using a retinol cream at night then developed dry lips that eventually became cracked, bleeding, and painful in July! I also experienced general dryness in my mouth, eyes, and bowels. After listening to your podcast about what your lips tell about your health, I realized that it was the retinol cream & stopped using it immediately. My Vit A history includes 3 treatments of Accutane. It makes sense that adding retinol to my night time routine finally “tipped that scale”, overloading my liver. I've done 2 CBO protocols & several detoxes since 2018. Before I realized that the cream was the source of my problems, I did a 7-day detox & noticed that my lips worsened esp. during the 2 days of fasting. I stopped using the DNS powder, all supplements that listed Vit A on the label & stopped eating foods known to have high levels of Vit A. After several weeks, my symptoms improved. I heard you mention in a podcast that you were going to talk about a low Vitamin A diet but haven't been able to find anything on that topic. What would a low Vitamin A diet consist of? Once my lips are completely healed, would it be safe to resume DNS, supplements, & foods with Vit A? Thanks a bunch!   Paula: Hello and thank you for all that you do Dr Cabral! My 77 yr old mother has had intermittent amnesia episodes for over 13 years now, occurring on average 3 to 4 times per year. She has had extensive testing with no definitive outcome. Tests & scans looking at epilepsy, blood supply to the brain & heart were normal. There have been no head traumas that she is aware of in the past. I have recently started looking into it further myself and have come across a condition called Global Transient Amnesia which describes her symptoms almost exactly. When having an "episode" as she calls them, she loses short term memory for about 1/2 an hour and has no idea what she was doing at the time, nor what has happened in her recent past. She is still able to perform normal functions and is alert and very aware that the episode is happening but is just unable to recall anything from days/weeks prior for about 25 minutes or so which is distressing for her. Her memory returns gradually over that time and is then often very tired afterward. I am wondering if there could be an underlying issue that could be causing this and if you recommend any functional testing? She has been taking Ginkgo Biloba and liquid magnesium on and off for years without any notable differences. Thanks so much in advance.   Dani: Hi Dr cabral, grateful for your work and would love to hear your thoughts. A few months ago I had my first eczema and dermatitis flare up since 2019 when I healed my gut and rebalanced my body with my naturopath. The dermatitis is on my face, either seborrheic or perioral. I have used native and no pong deodorants for years but they irritated and inflamed the eczema on my armpits, it was very painful so I didn't apply anything all winter (based in Aus). My first though was gut-skin connection so I've been using a gut powder. Also ran the big 5 (just have one more test to do). Have already received my intolerance test back as it felt urgent to me but everything was fine on it (not one intolerance?!) I finished the 21 day detox last week. Still some dermatitis on my face, and I just tried some Bicarb free no pong Deodorant and a few hours later a rash and itching started. So now I'm wondering what other causes should I be looking at for this skin flare up. I'm sure I'll get some more answers from my big 5 but I was hoping it would have been something as simple as the food intolerance which I've experienced in the past. I do have some hormonal issues which were the main reason for my big 5 but wasn't sure if that could be a link to my eczema. Thanks again, appreciate you!   Luis: Hi Dr. Cabral, I wanted to get your thoughts on the Salt Water Flush. I believe this is also a ayurvedic practice, but I could be wrong. It involves drinking about a pint of warm to hot water, with about 2 table spoons of salt (pink or sea salt). After some time, it will purge the contents of the intestines until the water eventually comes out clear. The only downside I know of is that it may cause electrolyte imbalances, but replenishing those isn't a problem for me. I have done this many times over the past few years, but wanted your opinion on this procedure as well. Thanks for all you do!   Nikki: Hi Dr. Cabral, -I'm 55 yo female, mainly vata with some kapha, exercising 6 days weekly, 5'6” 112 lbs. -I've done the 21 day detox and the 7 day detox 3 times this past year. I've also done the Big 5 Labs and neurotransmitter test. I have candida and yeast overgrowth along with several food sensitivities (probably from leaky gut). I've done the CBO protocol with citricidal drops, noticing digestive improvement only while on the citricidal drops. Each time I introduced new foods I had gas, bloating and loose stools throughout the remainder of the CBO protocol so I didn't keep eating them. -I then did the 3 day stool test (no h-Pylori or parasites), spoke with one of your health coaches and did the Limited Yeast protocol with the citricidal drops but continued to have the bloating, gas and loose stools after introducing new foods so, I'm still not eating anything off the sensitive gut guide except for once or twice a week when I try a new food. I take Healthy Belly 3 x daily and Healthy Gut Support each morning along with digestive enzymes when I try new foods. -I've done the Para Protocol, Intestinal Cleanse and Heavy Metal Detox. -My hormones are still not aligned although I've taken the Equilife estrogen and progesterone supplements-presumable my digestion isn't able to absorb the nutrients from the supplements. I also tried seed cycling but my digestive problems worsened. -I have restless leg which is somewhat helpful with magnesium cream. I take cal/mag at dinner and full spectrum magnesium at bedtime. I drink 2 DNS shakes daily. -I also have the antiphospholipid syndrome and take fish oils which has kept my platelets in range. -My right thumb is constantly swollen and in pain. -My stomach acid was slightly low so I've been taking 3 Betaine HCL daily but haven't noticed any improvement in digestion. -My allergies (of 52 yrs) are better since eliminating dairy in January and I'm not on meds any longer, just Quercitin 3 x daily. -My health coach says to do another round of the CBO protocol and that should help so I'll be doing that again and will just be finishing when you get this. The Case:  Alexandra's everyday was determined by the state of her stomach She was often bloated, gassy, and struggled to keep her weight healthy She tried restrictive diets, tried over the counter gas remedies, digestive enzymes, and various probiotics but nothing gave her long-term relief   The Investigation It was clear that there was something going on with her gut and it seemed likely that dysbiosis was at play. I knew her microbiome needed support but, I also suspected that with everything she'd tried, we needed to approach the solution methodically as there was likely more than one thing going on.  Gut issues and the state of our microbiome plays a huge role in how we feel physically but it can also seriously impact our mental health, organ health, immune system, and our ability to lose or maintain a healthy weight.    Wheat Belly Author's Latest Book When it comes to understanding gut health and addressing Alexandra's problem, I knew that one of the best people to talk to would be the author of the best selling book, Wheat Belly. Dr. William Davis has a new book out called Super Gut where he addresses exactly what Alexandra is going through. The book also shares a ‘4-week place to reprogram your microbiome, restore health, and lose weight'.    Symptoms of a Disrupted Gut Microbiome There are many symptoms that could point to a disruption in the microbiome balance. Most people think of the symptoms that Alexandra was experiencing because they are related to the gut itself (bloating, gas, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, etc) but there are many other issues that can be traced back to microbiome disruption. Dr. Davis points to a myriad of issues including, weight gain, skin rashes and eczema, arthritis, pain, inflammation, wrinkles and healthy skin, and sleep health. He also believes that just about every human disease needs to be reconsidered in light of the microbiome.   What Causes the Microbiome to be out of Balance? There are many reasons that the microbiome may be out of balance including use of antibiotics as well as other drugs like stomach acid blocking drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen diclofenac), synthetic sweeteners (Aspartame, sucralose and saccharin),  emulsifying agents (Sorbate 80, carboxymethyl, and cellulose), and even something as common as stress can disrupt microbiome.  One condition that is directly related to microbiome health is the silent epidemic of SIBO.    What is SIBO SIBO stands for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. Dr. Davis says that many people have SIBO but go undiagnosed (which can lead to long-term health issues). There is now a breath test that people can do to better understand SIBO and where the bacteria overgrowth is happening, specifically, in the digestive pathway.  Microbes belong in the colon which has a protective barrier against microbes. When there is an imbalance or overgrowth, microbes can end in the small bowel where the mucus barrier is thinner and can be easily damaged by these misplaced microbes.  Exposure to antibiotics and emulsifying agents can further erode the lining as well as disrupt the balance of stool microbes like E coli, and citrobacter. These proliferate and offset the balance. And then, these microbes die (within a few hours) and release a lot of byproducts that break down and make it into the bloodstream. This process results in something called endotoxemia which is extremely toxic to humans. With all of this going on internally, it can be difficult to detect but may show up as depression, brain issues, joint swelling or intestinal issues.  Dr. Davis estimates that 1 in 3 people are dealing with SIBO which can lead to Endotoxemia when untreated.    Testing for SIBO Conventional doctors can conduct a test for SIBO but Dr. Davis says the method they use does not identify all forms of SIBO.  One of the early signs of SIBO is the presence of hydrogen gas (produced by the bacteria) within 90 minutes of consuming food. The quicker it shows up, the further up the GI tract the imbalance is occurring.  Signs we often attribute to food intolerances may in fact be related to SIBO. For example, if you eat black beans and experience bloating, gas, and/or diarrhea in about 30 minutes then it is virtually 100% reliable that you have SIBO.  Another sign of SIBO is fat malabsorption. If you look in the toilet, you see fat droplets or staining of the toilet where water meets porcelain, this is a sign that you are not absorbing fat and that SIBO may be present. Dr. Davis says that many diseases can be seen as a symptom of SIBO. For example, he says 84% of people with irritable bowel syndrome have SIBO. People with autoimmune diseases, like Hashimoto's, Crohn's, UlcerativeColitis, and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as those with neurodegenerative disorders, like Parkinson's disease, Lou Gehrig's disease, Alzheimer's, dementia, cognitive decline, or multiple sclerosis have a high probability of having SIBO.    What is SIFO It is also possible to have small intestinal fungal overgrowth (SIFO). The trick is that sometimes SIFO looks like SIBO and as a result, they are misdiagnosed. There are about 200 different fungal species that can proliferate in the small intestine. The symptoms of SIFO are tough to distinguish from SIBO but it's typically bloating, diarrhea, skin rashes, eczema, and sugar cravings.  SIFO can take months to treat.    The SIBO and Endotoxemia Connection to Depression Dr. Davis says that people who are depressed may get temporary relief from antidepressants but he doesn't believe this is the long term solution because the real cause may be SIBO endotoxemia. A German research group performed two studies in which they injected endotoxin into the bloodstreams of non-depressed people. The result was profound depression which was identifiable through MRI brain scans.  Dr. Davis believes that, for many people, depression is a disease of the microbiome.   How to Support SIBO If you talk to your regular doctor or a gastroenterologist, they'll likely prescribe a course of conventional antibiotics. This is about 40 - 60% effective and can be very expensive. Plus, you run the risk of perpetuating the problem because of the damage the drug may do to the intestinal lining. There are many herbal remedies that can work as well as the antibiotics and after that,  but Dr. Davis recommends high-potency probiotics that are best delivered through home-made yogurt or fermented foods.  When supported properly, SIBO can be eradicated and it does not have to take many months.   Supporting SIBO with Home-made Probiotic Yogurt In his book, Super Gut, he has recipes on how to ferment your own yogurt at home using specific bacterial strains. These recipes use the microbes like Lactobacillus Gasseri,  Lactobacillus Reuteri, and Bifidobacterium Infantis (commercially available under the name EVIVO).  When Dr. Davis makes his own yogurt, he finds he's getting upwards of two hundred sixty billion counts of bacteria, per half cup serving which is significantly higher than what you might buy as a supplement. The benefit of this is that the right bacteria (in the yogurt) colonize in the upper GI tract which then releases oxytocin which can improve mood and sleep.  Another benefit to ingesting these home-made yogurts, according to Dr. Davis is that you may see a reduction in wrinkles (especially when combined with collagen hydrolysates and hyaluronic acid).  But, the biggest benefit is the oxytocin effect as this can preserve bone health, boost libido and improve sleep (including supporting longer REM sleep periods).  Dr. Davis provides recipes in his book, Super Gut for various types of home-fermented yogurt and an apple cider drink.    Histamine Intolerance and SIBO While Dr. Davis recommends fermented foods and drinks as a way to get high levels of probiotics from food; it could cause a problem for those who are histamine-intolerant. In this case, he recommends using herbal antibacterials first before starting fermented foods. The histamine intolerance may be connected to the SIBO, so once that is solved, it may be possible to reintroduce foods with histamines like yogurt and fermented food that contain high levels of probiotics, which may then reset the microbiome, end endotoxemia and deter a recurrence of SIBO.   Weight Loss Benefits of Ending Endotoxemia A study done in  Belgium in 2007 by Dr. Patrice Cani's group indicated that endotoxemia is a driver in insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is linked to weight gain, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, high triglycerides, coronary disease, cancers, and dementia. Dr. Davis says “when you get rid of endotoxemia, insulin levels plummet and it allows you to lose weight at a rapid pace.”   Mystery Solved I knew Alexandra needed gut support but to better identify where to start and what to address first, we did a few tests including a stool test, breath test and organic acid test. These tests revealed SIBO as well as an overgrowth of yeast.  The first step was to do a cleanse to treat the SIBO. We used FC Cidal and Dysbiocide with binder charcoal.  To deal with the digestive insufficiency revealed in her stool test, she took Betaine HCL and Beta TCP.  And, to help reset her microbiome, we did as Dr. Davis suggested and included homemade yogurt in her regimen. We started slowly but once we saw big improvements, we moved to higher dosages. When the gas and bowel issues normalized, we added in Enterovite to help diversify her microbiome even more and started adding new foods (while continuing with fermented foods).  Alexandra was so pleased with the results. 090 The Surprising Long Term Effect of COVID on Autoimmunity

The Case:  Alison has an autoimmune disease and struggles to fight off colds and flus At the start of the pandemic, she took extra precautions including social distancing and taking extra vitamins As things open up, her anxiety is heightened and she wonders if she’ll ever shake the fear of going out again   The Investigation Alison reached out to me for help supporting her immune system so that she can start getting out more without the fear of infection and a flare up of her autoimmune disease. I knew there was a hidden threat to her health beyond being exposed to more people and germs. I knew we had to look at this from all angles to help her enter the post-lockdown COVID world with confidence.  To help me explore the emotional impact of quarantine, pandemic fears, and increased anxiety on the immune system, I invited Dr. Don Wood back to the show.  You may recall that Dr. Wood joined us on episode 62 when he shared insights into a potential underlying cause of inflammation and autoimmunity.  He is the founder of the Inspired Performance Institute. His research linked various forms of trauma to subconscious blocks that lead to all types of health issues. The IPI works with people to reboot the mind to release the mind from the impact of these emotional traumas.     The Trauma Spectrum When we think of trauma, our minds likely go to big traumas, or what is often referred to as Big T trauma like an accident or abuse. But, Dr. Wood notes that less obvious traumas can also have an impact, even if we don’t recognize them as trauma. These smaller traumas can be emotional and can stay with us for a long time without us realizing how they are impacting our physical and mental health   Emotional Concussion Dr. Wood coined the term ‘emotional concussion’ to help people understand the impact of emotional experiences. We are familiar with physical concussions (thanks to the research being done on athletes) and we understand that physical concussions can be serious whether they are from one big incident or the culmination of many smaller physical events. Dr. Wood says the same can be said about emotional concussions. We might have a big emotional event that leaves a noticeable impact but we can also feel the impact of multiple smaller emotional events that add up over time. These smaller events over time can be harder to track or attribute a physical response to. This is the risk that some are facing with the Pandemic. The emotional impact of decreased socializing, stress, anxiety, and isolation can compound into an emotional concussion.    Physical Effects of Emotional Concussions When these emotional events start to build-up (like they may be doing with COVID-related stresses), they can activate your nervous system and cause inflammation. This is a normal response to trauma, and under normal circumstances it’s a good thing because it is a protection and repair response. But if it keeps happening for an extended period of time (perhaps because we are reliving the trauma emotionally because we haven’t processed it), we stay in that activated state. This can then cause or trigger autoimmune issues. It can manifest in various different ways. For example, the inflammation could show up in the intestinal area (potentially triggering Crohn’s) or the thyroid (related to Hashimoto’s).   It can take time for the physical effects of the emotional concussions to show up - months, years and even decades. The response can also be from traumas that we don’t outwardly track as trauma. But if we have an emotional or physical reaction to the memory, then Dr. Wood says we relive the trauma in our mind. That memory, if it is vibrant enough, can continue to put the nervous system into an activated state. The person may not be aware that their mind is creating this trigger over and over to something that happened in the past because the mind doesn’t actually  know it’s in the past - it reacts as if it’s happening now.  In the case of COVID, the anxieties being felt now can be re-triggered with memories or as we return to ‘normal’ life including going out without a mask, shaking hands, wondering if it’s safe to hug someone, or being in crowds.    How to Reduce the Long-Term Effects of Pandemic Anxiety The most important process in reducing the long-term impact of anxiety that has surfaced during COVID is to learn how to down-regulate your nervous system. In other words, to calm your nervous system so it doesn’t continue to feel the threats or anxieties of COVID after the threat is actually over.  Calming the mind and body are the key to down-regulating your nervous system. Dr. Wood says that even if someone has never meditated before, they can still calm the nervous system with simple breathing exercises. He suggests doing what he calls ‘5-6-7’ breathing. Start by closing your eyes, breathe in for 5 seconds, hold for six seconds, and breathe out for seven seconds. Do this three times and see what yo notice. For most people its enough to see a significant shift in how they feel.   Resetting or ‘Rebooting’ after an Emotional Concussion Meditation and breathing exercises are a great way to manage an activated nervous system in the moment but Dr. Wood has created a way to reset or reboot the mind so that old traumas no longer trigger a reaction in the nervous system. He works directly with clients to identify the trauma or memories (this isn’t always apparent to the patient) and then he walks them through a process of diffusing them for good. It’s called ‘The TIPP Method’. He explains the process in this episode as shifting the memory from high-definition (and emotion inducing) to low definition and the status of information-only. He does this in a 4 hour process that, due to demand during the pandemic, is now available online. This process works for people with multiple small ‘t’ traumas and for people dealing with big ‘T’ traumas. She was low in many nutrients including vitamin D, iron, and B12. We also discovered various food sensitivities which all played a role in her immune function. We worked on her diet and I supported her in making the necessary changes based on her lab tests.  In addition to the diet, we added the needed nutrients. We also added in 3000 mg of Vitamin C and 30 mg of zinc balancing it with 2 mg of copper.  All of this helped in balancing her immune system but, as we know from listening to Dr. Wood, there are emotional triggers to consider as well.  I worked with Allison to help her calm her nervous system by addressing beliefs and teaching her to tune into her body by practicing a body scan, breathwork and meditation.  At the same time, she is going through Dr. Wood’s TIPP Method (online program) which has been extremely eye opening. 087 Are you Missing this Important Evaluation Method for Thyroid Assessment?

The Case:  Emily is dealing with hair loss, sluggishness and constipation. Emily tried changing her diet and taking adrenal supplements but not much changed. Lab results confirm her suspicion that her thyroid is slow (even though the numbers are technically in range).  Emily’s numbers come up right on the edge of optimal so I knew that we needed to dig a bit deeper to find out what else was playing a role in her health mystery.    The Investigation Emily went to see her primary care doctor and asked her to run all the thyroid markers. The doctor was actually very open and ran everything she requested including TSH, total and free t4, total and free t3, reverse t3 and thyroid antibodies.  Her doctor reported that everything was within range, but as a fan of the show, Emily knew that ‘in range’ doesn’t mean optimal. My first instinct here was to run a hair test, and get to the bottom of the hair loss, sluggishness and constipation.   Top Thyroid Expert I asked my friend and colleague Dr. Michael Biamante to come back on the show to talk about thyroid, since he is the New York City Thyroid Doctor.    We have often spoken about the connection between people taking synthetic thyroid supplements and still reporting that they don’t feel quite right.   Factors that Affect the Thyroid There are many things that can affect the performance of your thyroid, and it’s important to consider them all when trying to solve a health mystery involving the thyroid or symptoms likely related to thyroid issues. Here’s a quick reference:   Kidneys: Regulate potassium levels in the body. Adrenal Cortex: Produces corticosteroids and glucose, aids in retention of potassium in your cells. Sodium: Low thyroid hormone can cause a low tissue sodium level. Potassium: Facilitates proper nerve and muscle function. Zinc & Magnesium: Both encourage potassium storage in the cells which is important for conversion of T3. Copper: Blocks potassium which can impact T3 conversion.   Hair Test for Calcium & Potassium A hair analysis test allows us to analyze the tissue levels for each of the minerals.  By looking at a hair analysis test, we can accurately determine the levels of calcium, potassium and other minerals, as well as how they relate or connect to each other.    Why do these mineral levels matter?   Guyton’s book on physiology explains that calcium acts as a governor or antagonist to the thyroid hormone, and that potassium is a synergist. This means that if the body is too high in calcium, or too low in potassium, the thyroid will likely be affected. Calcium and potassium serve as thyroid regulators so their levels in the tissues can impact thyroid performance.    What is the Ideal Ratio of Calcium to Potassium? 4 parts calcium to 1 part potassium is the ideal ratio for the body to have. It’s important to note when looking at any of the minerals, that the relativity and connection between them is key. There’s a lot more to potassium than simply eating a banana, so please make sure you consult your practitioner on this one.   Mystery Solved If you listen to this show, then you know that thyroid issues can be complex. In Emily’s case, her levels were not out of range enough to warrant medication but were certainly not optimal. In addition to her blood work, I ran a hair test and saw very high calcium levels, low sodium and potassium along with slightly elevated copper paired (unsurprisingly) with low zinc. The high calcium levels with low sodium and potassium are indicative of overall weakened adrenals and thyroid.  In Emily’s case, the high amount of copper was antagonizing her zinc which also made sense. Zinc is a needed mineral for converting thyroid hormone T4 into T3.  Next Steps In addition to lifestyle and mindfulness practices as well as a balanced whole food diet, I put Emily on Thyroxal from Apex to help support the thyroid overall.  We also added in Betaine HCL as low sodium levels in the hair are often indicative of low stomach acid. We used B Supreme to get her the needed B vitamins.  Looking at the high calcium, we saw a very off balanced ratio of calcium to magnesium and based on her results, I put her on 600 mg of Magnesium Glycinate. This is a fairly high dose but her calcium to magnesium ratio was almost at 18 when it should be around 7. Since she had issues with constipation, I knew the magnesium could be very helpful for that as well.  Happy Ending After 2 months on this protocol, Emily’s bowels were moving and her energy was slightly improved. We added 60 mg of Zinc, which is a higher dose but was only used short term to help push out the excess copper. She also began on Adrenal Cortex to help support her adrenal system.    4 months after beginning the protocol, Emily’s energy was much better, and bowels were moving every day. She even raved about her skin and hair glowing, and she experienced less hair loss. We retested her thyroid blood work, and her levels were now in the optimal ranges!    Eliminating Health Mysteries For Emily, we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her health. 081 The Mystery of Histamine Overload w/ Dr. Beth O’Hara

The Case:  Rachel is dealing with digestion problems, sleep issues, headaches, psoriasis, and rashes.  She’s seen a ton of specialists, including a dermatologist, gastroenterologist, neurologist, and an endocrinologist She tried steroids, acid lowering medications, and a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) with little improvement.   The Investigation This battery of symptoms may seem unrelated but I suspected that they were all connected.  My first clue was in her diet - which was not unhealthy but did have one common element that raised my suspicions. It’s found naturally in many foods and many traditional doctors don’t know to look for it - despite the fact that it’s estimated that as much as 17% of the population may have a reaction to it.  Dr. Beth O’Hara is a Functional Naturopath and the owner of Mast Cell 360, a Functional practice specializing in root cause approach to Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, Histamine Intolerance, and related conditions such as oxalates, mold toxicity, and chemical sensitivities.  You may recall that Beth appeared on episode 67 when we discussed a case involving oxalates.  This time we’re focusing on mast cell activation syndrome and histamine intolerance, which I suspected in Rachel’s case.    What is Histamine Intolerance? Most people think of allergies when they think about histamines because antihistamines are taken to deal with the symptoms. However, histamine has a much bigger role in the body than reacting to allergens. Histamine helps regulate estrogen levels, the sleep-wake cycle, acts as neurotransmitter, activates stomach acid and plays a role in digestion. The body can build up high levels of histamines to a point where the enzymes that break down histamine can’t keep up. At this point, it exceeds the threshold causing a histamine intolerance that leads to many different symptoms.    Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance There are a wide range of symptoms and they vary from person to person. Here are the big ones:   Skin irritation Rashes or hives Headaches (even migraines)  Gastro-intestinal issues Inflammation   Causes of Histamine Intolerance There are many things that can push histamine levels over the top including environmental toxins and certain foods. Some of the most common foods that are high in histamines include:  Spinach Strawberries Pineapple Fish (especially tinned) Packaged/processed foods   Click here for a comprehensive list of high and low histamine foods.  In addition to diet and environmental triggers, there are also genetic factors to consider. Specifically the genes that are coded for histamine degrading enzymes like ABP1 and AOC1 that produce diamine oxidase (DAO). Also, Histamine N-Methyltransferase (HNMT) which is another gene with the function of breaking down histamines.  Alternatively, a gut issue where the microbiome is impeding the natural creation of DAO can also cause a histamine overload.    What is Mast Cell Activation Syndrome Sometimes a histamine intolerance is caused by mast cell activation. Mast cells are the frontline defenders of the immune system and they produce histamine. These cells are activated when there is a threat like a virus, bacteria, parasites, mold or toxins. When they find this issue, they surround it with inflammation producing molecules and call to other immune cells to come in and do the rest of the clean-up process. This activation can result in an over-production of histamine. If the body is under constant attack (from toxins or stress), then mast cell activation can turn into mast cell activation syndrome. This can manifest in many ways with a variety of symptoms and can be difficult to diagnose.    Testing for Histamine Intolerance and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome Diagnosing mast cell activation syndrome is to see if there are symptoms involving two or more systems of the body. For example, GI issues, headaches, hives or others listed here. One of the first diagnostic tests is to have the patient take an antihistamine to see if the symptoms are related to histamine. However, you have to make sure that the antihistamine does not have mast cell triggers like dyes or titanium dioxide. The final piece of identifying mast cell activation syndrome is a genetic test showing a positive result for one of the mast cell mediators like tryptase, N-methylhistamine, prostaglandins, or cytokines.   Treating Histamine Overload or Mast Cell Activation Syndrome The most important step is to reduce histamine intake. This is most commonly managed through a low-histamine diet. It’s important to note that foods that are seen as health-promoting, like fermented foods or spinach smoothies, can in fact be quite high in histamines. Eating organic is also important (to reduce pesticide exposure) as is making sure your protein is clean and fresh. In particular, you want wild caught fish that is frozen at sea. Histamines can be elevated in food over time which is why it’s also important not to eat old leftovers (best to freeze them right away instead of leaving them in the fridge).  And, avoid processed foods especially canned foods (including fish and meat).  The next step is to make sure there aren’t any other triggers like mold, parasites, bacteria (including in the gut microbiome), or viruses.  And the final step is to support the body in breaking down histamines. For some this may mean supporting the gut with supplements like DAO  and if needed Betaine HCL, . Dr. O’Hara will also recommend herbal treatments (to patients who aren’t too sensitive) such as Baicalin (Chinese Skullcap) and Perimine (perilla extract) to support the mast cells. Every treatment has to be specific to the individual since the presentation of symptoms and the triggers are often unique to the individual.    Mystery Solved As you can see, histamines can play a role in a multitude of symptoms and this was in fact the case for Rachel.  The first step was to remove high histamine foods from her diet and add a DAO enzyme to break down the histamines.  Just doing this resulted in a significant reduction in her skin irritations and headaches. But, I suspected that the histamine issue was secondary to other imbalances.  We ran an organic acid test and a stool test and saw she had a lot of Candida. She was already eating well and didn’t over consume starches or sugars so we worked on it through supplements. I used GI Microb-X, FC Cidal and Tricycline followed by SF 722 for candida eradication and then we put in probiotics, glutamine and Enterovite for healing.  We also ran a mycotoxin test and saw she had several elevated mycotoxins (mold toxins). She suspected her apartment had issues as she saw spots on her bathroom ceiling. Thankfully, her lease was almost up and she was able to move away from the issue. We then used Molecular Hydrogen and Ultra Binder to help bind what was left in the body and support the mitochondria which can often be affected by mold. Happy Ending After 6  months on the protocol, Rachel had clear skin, better digestion and improved sleep. After the healing that we did, she was able to go back to eating tomatoes and avocados (high histamine foods) with no issues. She finds that she still needs to be mindful and doesn’t overdo high histamine foods but she no longer needs to completely avoid them like before.   Eliminating Health Mysteries For Rachel we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her completely regain her health. 076 What You Need to Know about Acid Alkaline Balance w/ Dr. Russell Jaffe

The Case:  Elody is not feeling well. She has aches and pains as well as digestive issues. She also has dull hair and skin.  She read about the benefits of an alkaline diet and started taking baking soda and drinking alkalized water but it made her feel worse.    The Investigation There are many studies that support having a more alkaline diet and encourage people to support this diet with sodium bicarbonate. On the surface, it might seem like a good idea. I suspected Elody was on the right track trying to adjust her pH levels but I also knew the mystery ran a bit deeper than that.  To fully understand the intricacies of finding the perfect internal pH balance, I’m excited to welcome one of the most respected experts on the topic.  Dr. Russell Jaffe has been searching for answers in health care (not sick-care) for the past 30 years. In his global search for insights, he’s developed a deep understanding of the importance of measuring and correcting the body’s pH levels.    The Role of pH in Health The body’s pH levels are reflected in the venous and arterial blood, and in the cells themselves. The range of pH is broad (0-12) but the healthy human range is just on the alkaline side of neutral. A chance in pH by as little as 1/100 of a pH unit can have a profound effect on human health. So, even tiny changes in pH can result in significant shifts in how well we feel. Staying inside the healthy pH range is getting harder and harder in our modern culture.  Does Taking Baking Soda Help Your pH Levels (by Increasing Alkaline Levels)? Dr. Jaffe says the science makes sense but in practice, this is a silly approach. Taking bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, or potassium bicarbonate will disrupt the natural (and necessary) acidity of the stomach. This can lead to serious digestive issues.    The Healthy Way to Alkalize the Body  Dr. Jaffe explains that the only way to biologically alkalize the body is to: Take in minerals, particularly magnesium and  potassium in ways that  the body can absorb and retain Reduce the metabolic acid production by reducing toxin exposure, reducing stress (and distress) levels, and improving your nutritional competence.    Symptoms of Low pH Levels There are a variety of symptoms that could indicate a low pH (below 6.5) including feeling stressed out, hopeless, or helpless. Fatigue, dehydration, and poor digestion can also be symptoms. Even a desire to drink alcohol can be an indication of a low body pH.    Symptoms of High pH Levels Being over-alkaline has negative health effects too. Being in this state for an extended time is called catabolic illness. In this state, the body starts to use amino acids for energy which means the body starters to break down lean muscle to use as fuel. This produces extra ammonia which ends up in the urine. This stress-related disorder is reversible if you are proactive in restoring the neural hormonal immune defence and repair, and digestive competencies that have been eroded.    Testing Your pH Levels It can be difficult to tell if you’re pH is out of balance (too acidic or too alkaline) without testing. Testing does not require a lab. Dr. Jaffe suggests doing a daily pH level test first thing in the morning and keeping a log to track your balance. The test is a urine test that can be done at home. Dr. Jaffe recommends testing your first urination of the day by peeing on a pH paper strip or dipping the strip in a clean cup of urine.  The strip will change color. If you have an excess of metabolic acids, your pH will be below 6.5 and the strip will turn a sandy-red. If you are in optimal range (6.5-7.5) the strip will turn green. If you are above 7.5 consistently, you may have catabolic illness which should be addressed.  Dr. Jaffe recommends using the 5.5-8 range strips because that’s the biological pH paper.    Restoring the pH Balance The best way to reset the body’s pH levels is through diet. Here is a chart that identifies foods that can help shift the balance. While alkaline water may seem like an easy and healthy way to increase alkalinity, Dr. Jaffe says that food is a better choice. Select foods that you can digest, assimilate, and eliminate without immune burden. And, support your diet with magnesium.    The Role of Magnesium in Balancing Cellular Acidity and Alkalinity Magnesium is a mineral that amplifies hormonal signals. It is required by the body to balance out calcium, maintain healthy alkaline levels, and keep the mitochondria battery charged up (which is necessary for cells to process optimally). Almost all Americans have a relative excess of calcium and an absolute deficiency of magnesium.     How Much Magnesium Should You Take? There are a variety of different supplements on the market that all say ‘magnesium’. Some have so little bioavailable magnesium that they are not worth taking. Dr. Jaffe recommends taking a good quality magnesium (225 milligrams) along with a teaspoon (1300 milligrams) of choline citrate 2 - 5 times per day. He doesn’t recommend doubling the dosage and taking it fewer times a day as you will hit your maximum threshold.    Mystery Solved The first thing I did for Elody was to stop the baking soda and alkaline water. We also shifted her diet to be more alkaline by lowering the heavy meats and starches and added in more green veggies (avoiding spinach). And, we made sure to keep her diet clean and move away from processed foods.     A hair analysis revealed that her magnesium was low and the morning urine testing showed that he pH was too acidic. After 4 weeks, she started to feel better so we added 450 mg of magnesium buffered chelate per day in divided doses and she took that with choline citrate like Dr. Jaffe spoke about.  It took another 4 weeks for her to see a difference in her urine strips but then they finally shifted from a more yellowish to a greenish color which is where we want to be. At that point, she really started to notice a difference. Her energy was better, her stomach stopped hurting and her skin had a new found glow.   Next Steps  We still needed to support her gut because while her stomach aches were better, she still had gas, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. We did a stool test and saw some bacterial overgrowth and also low stomach acid. We supported her gut biome with GI MicrobX and Micro-Gone along with Tricycline to kill off the bugs and used Betaine HCL to help balance her stomach acid.    Happy Ending After the stomach cleanse and support, her digestion improved even more. She no longer felt gassy and bloated and her bowel movements were much more regular. She and I were both thrilled.   Eliminating Health Mysteries For Elody we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her health. There are many digestive enzyme supplements out there but which ones are the best and what is the best way to use them? In this article, I’ll be covering my 3 favorite digestive enzyme supplements and the way I use them in my practice. I’ll also dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about digestive enzyme supplements. Digestive enzymes are an important part of my practice because most of my patients have gut issues that are connected to their thyroid and autoimmune problems. I have found them to be a vital part of my gut healing protocols. Let’s jump in and cover the details of each product I recommend. Betaine HCL Supplemental betaine HCl helps to optimize hydrochloric acid levels in people with low stomach acid and can help to improve digestive function and comfort in patients of all ages. Many symptoms of digestive distress such as acid reflux, heartburn, gas, bloating or nausea after eating may be due to abnormally low or non-existent gastric acid secretion (hypochlorhydria and achlorhydria, respectively.) Endogenous HCl production naturally decreases with age but other factors such as illness, highly processed and acidic diets, overuse of antacids and high stress physiology in general may impair the body’s ability to generate healthy HCl levels. In addition to impaired digestion, hypochlorhydria has been associated with bacterial overgrowth, enteric infection, low vitamin B12 levels and an increased risk of gastric neoplasms. Hydrochloric acid is secreted by parietal cells in response to the presence of food in the stomach. HCl activates the conversion of pepsinogen to pepsin, an enzyme required for the digestion of proteins. Gastric HCl also works directly on protein molecules to assist in their breakdown and helps to separate nutrients from their carrier compounds (e.g. releasing vitamin B12 from protein molecules, and cleaving calcium from carbonate.) By helping to support efficient breakdown of proteins, betaine hydrochloride can help to prevent large peptide molecules from entering the intestines where they may contribute to inflammation and leaky gut pathologies. Adequate HCl levels in the stomach also help to minimize food sensitivities. In one study, 25% of patients taking acid-lowering drugs for dyspeptic disorders exhibited increased IgE formation towards commonly ingested foods. The same study suggested that food allergenicity could be reduced up to 10,000-fold by enhanced gastric digestion. Gastric hydrochloric acid plays a role in immune defense by destroying foodborne pathogens and microbes such as Helicobacter pylori, implicated in the pathogenesis of stomach ulcers. Although stomach ulcers are typically associated with excess acid production and treated with acid-blocking drugs, insufficient gastric HCl may, in fact, be a predisposing factor in ulcerative pathology. H. pylori is, of course, only one biological organism that multiplies in the absence of sufficient gastric HCL levels. Many species of bacteria and fungi overpopulate in the high gastric pH environment caused by low hydrochloric acid production, contributing in turn to a variety of metabolic and dysbiotic symptoms both within and beyond the digestive tract. Based on molecular weight, Betaine HCl is composed of 76.26% betaine and only 23.74% HCl. Hence we propose that the betaine component of the supplement may play a key role in its functionality. Nutritionally, betaine (also known as trimethylglycine) is obtained from beets and other sources—either as betaine directly or as synthesized endogenously from choline-containing foods. By serving as a methyl donor, betaine helps to support proper liver function, cellular replication and liver detoxification. Betaine also serves as a critical cofactor in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Betaine is well known to help reduce high homocysteine, associated with increased risk of Alzheimers and cardiovascular disease.

The Case:  Kenzie is 34 and dealing with a wide range of symptoms. She has digestive issues, dry, itchy scalp, and cognitive problems like brain fog. Doctors were unable to pinpoint the problem, leaving her with no answers and no solutions.    The Investigation Kenzie suffered for 3 years before she came to see me. I knew that these were not a random collection of symptoms - they were all connected and I suspected that it had to do with something causing dysbiosis or an imbalance in her gut.   This case reminded me of my own struggles to get healthy so many years ago, so it seemed like a great idea to invite the doctor who was able to help me get to the root of my problem.  Michael Biamonte is the founder of the Biamonte Center for Clinical Nutrition and is also the author of the Candida Chronicles: A Manual for Candida Yeast Infections. He says that at any given time, approximately 30% of the population has an overgrowth of candida.  What is Candida? Candida is a unique, yeast organism that exists primarily in the intestinal tract or in mucous membranes.  Candida is a dysmorphic organism meaning it’s able to live or exist in two different states - it can exist in the body as a yeast or as a fungus.  It’s natural to have this organism in the body and in fact, contributes to healthy flora in the intestines. But, it can over grow and become dominant and that’s when it can cause health problems. If you hear people talking about having Candida, they usually mean that they have an overgrowth of Candida.  Symptoms of Candida An overgrowth of Candida can cause as many as 150 different symptoms. Serious conditions like pneumonia and arthritis can also result from Candida overgrowth. Often doctors will diagnose the symptom or resulting condition without looking for the root cause. Kenzie’s symptoms were all common for Candida, including digestive issues, low energy, dry scalp, hair falling out, and various cognitive issues. Candida overgrowth can also result in new allergies, chemical sensitivities, and even fertility issues.  Causes of Candida Candida overgrowth has a variety of causes but Dr. Biamonte says that antibiotic abuse is the most common. Doctors who don’t know how to properly diagnose a condition, solve the problem by prescribing antibiotics. People who are constantly given antibiotics struggle to maintain the good bacteria in their intestinal tract. The bad bacteria or the candida then becomes dominant and it starts to release different types of toxins into your system. The immune system becomes suppressed. This cycle then goes on and on, producing different symptoms.  Sometimes, people try to treat these symptoms which can make the Candida imbalance worse. Even when they are doing something natural, like eliminating a food irritant, they can further upset the bacterial balance.  Finally, there is some evidence that some people are genetically predisposed to Candida overgrowth. And, people with diabetes may also be more likely to develop Candida.  Diagnosing Candida Candida is difficult to diagnose. A spit test can help to identify dysbiosis (an imbalance in the gut flora) which is the first step in diagnosing Candida. The spit test is conducted by spitting into a glass of water. If the spit dissipates, that is an indication that the gut flora is in good shape. If it doesn’t then there might be dysbiosis. The look of your tongue is also an indication of dysbiosis.  Blood tests can reveal if Candida antibodies are present but this test really only reveals if antibodies have been present in the past few months and isn’t a very good indication of the current state.  I like to use an organic acids test however, Dr. Biamonte prefers a comprehensive testing process that he developed that he feels is more accurate.  It’s important not to try to self diagnose Candida because, like leaky gut, you can get it wrong and make things worse.  Treating Candida Candida is very drug resistant and certain drugs can give a false sense of cure because they provide temporary relief. There is a proven natural protocol for treating Candida. Dr. Biamonte’s treatment follows a two stage protocol. The first phase involves limiting the diet and using botanicals. The second phase includes use of antifungal substances, which have the ability to destroy the Candida deep in the mucous lining of the colon and the small intestine. Prebiotics and probiotics are also part of the healing process to help the body replace the candida. According to Dr. Biamonte, probiotics should be a sticky strain or human strain. Better Understanding Candida In this podcast, we also discuss the important relationship between Candida and heavy metal toxicity, how Candida can go hand in hand with leaky gut syndrome or SIBO, and the role mycobacterial biofilm can play in derailing treatments of Candida.  Mystery Solved I had suspected Candida in Kenzie’s case so I ran an organic acids test and discovered that her D Arabinitol Marker was through the roof.  Our first move was to lower the processed sugar and carbohydrates in Kenzie’s diet - to stop feeding the Candida what it loves! After a few weeks of the diet change I put her on a pancreatic digestive enzyme and some Betaine HCl to support her stomach acid and digestion as well as a supplement called Biofilm Defense which helps to break up biofilms. We used this for a month and then added in antifungal nutrients Citramnesia, followed by FC cidal and then MicroGone. This took about 7 weeks and then we used something called SF 722 which is an oil based antifungal formula (that gets a bit deeper) to help eradicate the Candida that had made its way deeper into the intestines. We used 5 gel caps twice a day for 60 days.  At first, Kenzie was not feeling great and was definitely experiencing ‘detox reactions’ so we added in some charcoal which worked as a binder to help absorb some of the toxins the yeast was releasing as it was being killed off.  We finished out the protocol with some GI Revive which helps to heal the gut with glutamine and mucilaginous herbs.    Happy Ending Once Kenzie got over the adverse reaction to the ‘die off’ she started to feel better. Her memory and digestion improved. And by the end of  the protocol, her brain fog completely lifted, her energy improved, she no longer had gas and her stomach was flat.   Kenzie wanted to make sure this never happened again so while she was able to go back to some of the foods she enjoyed, she continued eating well and watched her sugars and wine as those can feed candida. It became a lifestyle and not just a diet.   Eliminating Health Mysteries For Kenzie, we were able to find the true root of the problem and help her regain her health. 030 The Case of Horrible PMS w/ Dr. Anu Arasu

The Case:  Amelia is 39 and dealing with heavy periods. She was also experiencing extreme PMS including headaches, bloating, and uncomfortable breast tenderness. It got so bad, she started to plan meetings, social gatherings and vacations around her cycle. The only solutions doctors offered was to take the birth control pill but a previous blood clot made that a risky proposition. The Investigation Every menstruating woman experiences her period differently but it was hard to hear about what Amelia was going through. I completely understood her predicament and resistance to start taking the pill again after having suffered a blood clot the last time she was on it. I knew there was still hope and that there had to be something else going on that we could address that would help make her periods more bearable. My first hunch was to look more closely at her hormones.    Joining me to discuss this case is Dr. Anu Arasu. She’s the founder of London Bioidentical Hormones clinic and was one of the first doctors in the UK to train in functional medicine.     What’s Actually Happening with Hormones During the Menstrual Cycle? Having your period is the result of cyclical release of hormones. In the first day of your period, both estrogen and progesterone will be low. At the end of the period (about 7 days later), the estrogen begins to rise. In an ideal world, we would then get a LH (luteinizing hormone) surge. This triggers ovulation (and the peak of our estrogen cycle). If ovulation does not result in a pregnancy, then the corpus luteum breaks down and produces progesterone. Soon, both estrogen and progesterone levels drop triggering a bleed.    What is a Heavy Period? It’s tricky to quantify what is a heavy menstrual flow and what is “normal” and a lot of women don’t know where they fall on the spectrum. It is difficult because we often only have ourselves to compare it to. Dr. Arasu says that if your menstrual flow is affecting your quality of life then it might be outside of ‘normal’. For example, if it stops you from doing things, going to work, socializing - or in Amelia’s case be able to go on vacation. Or, if there has been a dramatic change, then it is worth speaking to someone to find out what’s going on and what can be done about it.    Potential Causes of Painful Periods or Heavy Menstrual Flow There are a variety of things that can affect the menstrual cycle. Heavy periods could be caused by endometriosis or fibroids. Heavy periods can also be the result of not having a regular menstrual cycle (which could be caused by hormone changes or Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Hormone imbalance can also result in heavier periods. And, some women are just naturally prone to heavy periods.    Testing for Hormone Imbalance If pathologies like endometriosis, PCOS, and fibroids have been ruled out, a hormone test might provide a clearer picture of what’s going on. Dr. Arasu suggests doing both a urine test and a blood test to get the full picture of what’s going on. The DUTCH test (a type of urine test) is recommended because in addition to showing hormone levels, it also gauges metabolization efficiencies. However, this test will not reveal the follicle stimulating hormone levels which can indicate if someone is premenopausal. She also uses daily saliva tests to track what is going on over a period of time with regards to your progesterone and estrogen levels throughout the month.    Estrogen Dominance Estrogen dominance happens when estrogen and progesterone are not balanced. This can be determined through the DUTCH test which looks at all of the potent estrogens. Specifically, experts will be looking at estradiol, estriol, and estrone - the total estrogenicity.    Estrogen Clearance Metabolization of hormones is another important piece of the puzzle. If these dominant estrogens are not being metabolized, this can cause issues with the gut (which lead to other issues). A gut test will confirm this, particularly if there are anomalies with levels of beta-glucuronidase (which converts and clears estrogen).   The Gut Estrogen Connection Dr. Arasu explains the new research into the gut microbiome that has identified genes involved in the production of estrogen. This emerging research (and one we’ll be watching) that looks at estrobolome (a type of gut microbes) and the role it plays in estrogen clearance. The more we understand about this relationship, the better will be able to control estrogen imbalance (like estrogen dominance) through diet.    Diet to Reduce Heavy Periods If the heavy periods are being caused by estrogen dominance, then dietary and lifestyle adjustments may help to reduce the severity of these menstrual cycles. Here are a few shifts that will aid in estrogen clearance (and support hormonal balance): Eat more dark green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables Eat lots of vegetables or follow a vegetarian diet  Get adequate fiber (constipation may cause the circulation of partially metabolized oestrogen) Avoid using plastics or cosmetics that may contain xenoestrogens Minimize or cut out alcohol Get sufficient exercise Reduce Stress Hormone Support from Bioidentical Hormones Bioidentical hormone treatment may not be the first place to start in treating estrogen dominance. She starts with the above, as well as looking at the gut and supporting estrogen clearance with supplements like calcium gluconate and DIM. If the suggested lifestyle and diet changes don’t work, Dr. Arasu says bioidentical can do a great job in rebalancing the hormonal system.    The Difference Between Bioidentical Hormones and Synthetic Hormones Hormone replacement therapy has raised questions of safety, so it’s important to point out the difference between synthetic hormones and bioidentical hormones. Synthetic hormones are not identical to the body's own hormone structure as well they may bind to the wrong hormone receptors. Synthetic hormones may also cause side effects like irritability, acne and insomnia. It’s also important to note that synthetic progesterone (which is often what is prescribed to counter estrogen dominance) has been found to increase the risk of breast cancer. On the other hand, bioidentical hormones are identical in structure to the body’s own and therefore will bind with the correct hormone receptors and act exactly as the natural hormone does. However, bioidentical hormone therapy is not without risk, as we explain in this episode of the podcast.    Mystery Solved One of the first things we did in attempting to solve Amelia’s health mystery was to do a DUTCH test on the 21st day of her cycle. Her results showed that she had elevated estrone and estradiol while her progesterone was low. Her levels of 4 hydroxy (the bad hydroxy) levels were way off too meaning she wasn’t metabolizing estrogen properly.  The clues were adding up.  We also noted that Amelia had been on the birth control pill for many years when she was younger, and also reported that she is often constipated (two more contributing factor to estrogen dominance).  The final clue was found in the gut. I ran a GI Map stool test where I found some dysbiosis (overgrowth of bacteria and yeast) and as I was suspecting, her beta glucuronidase enzyme was elevated. Remember, this can inhibit the body from clearing estrogen.  It became quite clear that estrogen dominance was contributing to Amelia’s horrific PMS and menstruation experience.    Treatment Now that we understood the issue, we could get to work in helping her feel better. We started by treating her constipation with Calcium-Magnesium Citrate. Next, we cleaned out her bad gut bugs with an antimicrobial protocol of GI MicrobX and FC Cidal. We also supported her digestion with Betaine HCl to increase her low stomach acid.  After a few weeks of this protocol, her bowels started to move much better. I then gave Amelia Calcium D Glucarate which helps to lower the beta glucarodinate enzyme to help get estrogen moving out and we used DIM in liquid form (4 pumps per day) to help shift the conversion of estrogen away from the 4 hydroxy and more towards the 16 hydroxy. I also started her on a good quality omega, the OmegaAvail Ultra and GLA (gamma linolenic acid - the active ingredient in evening primrose oil).  Happy Ending Amelia did excellent with these changes and after 2 cycles, she noticed a lower flow, less clotting and her uncomfortably swollen breasts were a thing of the past. Finally, Amelia felt normal and no longer had to plan her life around her menstrual cycle.    Eliminating Health Mysteries For Amelia we were able to find the root cause of her menstrual cycles and help her regain her health (and her lifestyle). The holidays are here and boy are they fun! Some people think it's the most wonderful time of the year and I [Ginney] am one of those people. After all these years, I don't even TRY to kid myself that I am not going to enjoy my favorite holiday treats this time of year.  Oh, yes, I could demonize my favorite Queen Anne Chocolate Covered Maraschino Cherries or psyche myself out about the extra glass of really yummy red wine I will drink this Thanksgiving but I am not going to do that. What I am going to do is have LOTS of ReAline on hand and detox as I go.  That's right - instead of waiting for some crazy fad detox diet to start on January 1st, I am building my detox program the safe, healthy way every day the holidays are here so I can enjoy my favorite time of year and feel good in my body as well!. Have you ever discovered a life hack just when you needed to hear it? The timing and the solution was just so perfect that you acted immediately and it has stuck with you ever since? You’ve also probably seen biohacks that involved expensive equipment that is only for the most hardcore biohackers. Today, I’ve got an interesting episode on Biohacks that actually work. Based on my own experiments and experience I’ve created 39 actionable biohacks that YOU can start doing today! The best part? They don’t involve super expensive equipment or things that aren’t exactly backed by solid science. Okay, so why I am talking about Biohacking? I watched a funny video by JP Sears Biohacking Secrets – Ultra Spiritual Life where he’s making fun of Biohacking Secrets. It’s hilarious, . There are way too many people out there taking the biohacking concept and making fools of themselves trying to be cool or cutting edge. But I actually like the term Biohacking. I look at biohackers as a group of people who didn’t fit into the “bro” fitness scene but they are still interested in performing their best physically and mentally. It’s easy to see how all this health hacking talk could come off as complete quackery like the . But it’s also true that biohacking can greatly improve your mental and physical health–if you choose the right science-based strategies. So, what is Biohacking? It’s the art and science of controlling your biology and different parts of your body, influencing physiology in different ways to get the desired result.  In a nutshell, being the best you can be — Life Optimization! And who doesn’t aspire to become a better version of themselves? That’s why you’re reading this blog, right? That’s exactly why I’m not against Biohacking. Biohacking can be the tool to help you grow and reach our maximum potential. It can also be used to close those gaps in your life. Many of you have success financially but are struggling with your health or relationships. Or you’re physically fit but you struggle with financial or communication issues. Whatever it is— I want you to think about optimizing your life and strive to be fit in all areas of your life with these 39 practical biohacking tips. Let’s start with:   6 Fitness Hacks 1. Maximize your gains If you want to maximize the amount of muscle that you’re building make sure you alternate every month between strength zone reps, 4-6 reps then the following month you would use 8-12 reps for your major exercises. So, alternate between a month of strength training and a month of hypertrophy training. And here’s the major exercises that you should do: bench presses, deadlifts, single leg deadlifts, pull ups, overhead presses, squats, Bulgarian split squats, etc. 2. Gymnastic strength training There is a lot of power in using gymnastic strength training. Incorporate these type of exercises into your workout to improve your strength, power, and body control. You’ll notice that these moves make you focus in a way sitting that on a machine or even doing a bench press does not, as there is more skill involved.  Think L-sits, ring dips, muscle ups, Jefferson curls, back bridges, planches, front levers, dragon flags and more. Incidentally, Tim Ferris wrote about Christopher Sommer’s approach to gymnastic strength training in his new book Tools Of Titans. I’ve been a student of gymnastic strength training for the past 2 years now and credit it with helping me get back in shape after a car accident herniated 3 of my cervical discs. 3. Eccentric isometrics This is a great way to get more out of your exercises. It enhances the quality of movement, thereby increasing performance and reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. This is one of the most effective techniques for increasing strength and hypertrophy. Something I’ve been experimenting with is using eccentric isometrics to get better at gymnastic strength training exercises. I’ll be doing videos of how to do those soon. In the meantime, I did two interviews with Dr. Joel Seedman, where we went deep into this topic.   4. Isometric holds You may already be doing this with planks but you can do isometric holds in other exercises such as chin-up, bicep curls, just to name a few. Start using them in your workouts and during reps. It’s going to help you get stronger and build more muscle and it also takes a tremendous amount of control to hold a position. Here are 5 of my favorite isometric exercises: 5. Build Stronger Toes, Feet and Ankles Strong and flexible feet, ankles, and calves provide a base for stable movement and are essential for performing your daily activities without pain or strain. Dr. Joe Seedman has revolutionized my thinking on this topic and I started doing his toe foot and ankle exercises and I’ve been getting great results. What do I mean? Better balance, fewer knee issues, stronger calf muscles and toes that actually move. Here are a few exercises for you to try: 6. Go barefoot (or use barefoot shoes) Going barefoot strengthens the stabilizing muscles of the foot and ankle and makes them stronger and also helps to improves muscle alignment. This all means a stronger body, less joint pain, better posture, more mobility, greater health, and greater freedom. Just make sure you perform the toe, foot and ankle exercises above or your feet may not be ready for barefoot workouts. If workout at a gym and you can’t go barefoot then I suggest using these recommended barefoot shoes. (take the insole out and order 1/2 size smaller) 7 Nutrition, Digestion and Detoxification Hacks 1. Chew your food slowly Chewing breaks your food down from large particles into smaller particles that are more easily digested. This also makes it easier for your intestines to absorb nutrients from the food particles as they pass through. You also release a digestive enzyme called salivary amylase that starts to break down starch in your mouth. If you’re not consciously chewing your food you’re missing out on something that is free and something that really improves your digestive health. Another bonus is that you’ll be less likely to over eat by giving your body time to register fullness. 2. Eat mostly whole foods We’re starting to learn that the quality of what we eat is so important and we’re much better off eating whole foods. None of us are perfect and we live in the modern world, so obviously every meal and snack you have will not be made up of whole foods unless you’re super strict. However, if you aim to eat whole foods for most of your meals for most of the week it will go a long way. Whole foods also make it harder to digest all the calories contained in them versus processed foods. And whole foods are loaded with vitamins, minerals and more. 3. Take glutamine for gas, bloating, loose stools, etc. If you’re experiencing excessive flatulence with a foul smell, it’s usually a sign of an unhealthy digestive system. I would recommend that you try to use trans-analyl glutamine for gas, bloating or any other digestive problem to see if it helps. Glutamine is one of the 20 naturally occurring amino acids in dietary protein. It is considered a conditionally essential amino acid (being elevated to essential during periods of disease and muscle wasting). Glutamine is known to help the immune system as well as the gastrointestinal tract. I’ve personally used it when I was suffering some digestive issues and it helped clear them up. Try it! *My pick:  4. Take digestive enzymes for digesting food problems If you have trouble digesting your food you can also take digestive enzymes. We all have Hydrochloric acid in our stomach and that helps digest the proteins and the harder to digest foods. However, some of us have low levels and I used to have a hard time digesting steak and chicken and taking Betaine HCL has helped to improve that. However, there are many other enzymes (technically HCl is an acid and not a true enzyme) that help to digest fats and starches. These other enzymes can help if there’s an issue digesting the other foods. That’s why I recommend the supplement below. It contains HCl as well as many other enzymes that will help you improve your digestion and to get the most from your food. *My pick: 5. Use organic body care products and toiletries Here’s something I want you to do when you’re home. Look at your shampoo bottle and read all the ingredients and a rule of thumb if it doesn’t sound like something you would eat, don’t put it on your scalp or body. Why? Because our skin is actually an organ and it lets things through. Things like the chemicals that can disrupt your hormones. While not as important as the big three (exercise, nutrition and sleep) I’ve read enough to motivate me to take exposure to potentially deleterious man-made chemicals seriously. Using organic toiletries minimizes your exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals. An added bonus is that these toiletries tend to be better quality and easier on your skin. Here are a few of my favorite toxin-free toiletries for you to try: 6. Use glass containers to store food Whether you’re on a quest to prevent food waste or you simply want to store prepared food, reusable containers can do the job. But some food containers are safer than others when it comes to personal and environmental health. Glass is overall a safer choice for food storage than plastic for the same reason as using organic toiletries–it cuts down on endocrine-disrupting chemicals in your life. Are you going to drop fat like you’re a contestant on the Biggest Loser? No. But it’s another small step in the right direction on optimizing your health. And you won’t get that funky plastic smell in your food. *Here’s my pick: 7. Use an air purifier or air purifying plants Every day our bodies are exposed to small amounts of toxins, carcinogens, and organic pollutants, and over the course of our lives, this can have a very harmful effect. Air quality easily ranks as among the most influential factors on our health. Having an air purifier with a HEPA filter can easily help to the reduction of these effects. Sleep ritual Bedtime rituals can make or break your success. The last few things you do before bed tend to have a significant impact on your mood and energy level the next day, as they often determine how well and how much you sleep. Having a sleep ritual is a great way to set up your environment for optimal sleep. Try these three steps before going to bed. i. Turn down the lights an hour before bedtime. By dimming your lights (or turning most of your lights off) you cut down on the ubiquitous melatonin disrupting blue light that keeps us from sinking into deep sleep. ii. Turn down the temperature an hour before bedtime. (I’m currently doing 69 degrees) Sleep is though to be triggered by a lowering of temperature. In fact, there was a study done with insomniacs who used a cooling cap before bed and it basically got rid of their insomnia. No need to put on a funny cap. Just turn down your thermostat and hour before bed to ensure that overheating won’t keep you from falling asleep. iii. Stay away from the computer and other devices an hour before bedtime. This has to do with the melatonin disrupting blue light coming from your computer and devices. Of course, sometimes we’re required to work late on our computers. If that’s the case, make sure you download for your computer. Or consider buying some . 2. Sleep mask One of the simplest and most effective ways of achieving darkness when you want to sleep is with a sleep mask. But not all sleep masks are created equally. *My pick: 3. Ear plugs When you block out both noise and light, your chances of falling asleep are improved. In case you live in a noisy area or you have trouble sleeping when it is noisy. Use superior foam ear plugs it’s a great way to solve that issue without putting stress on your ears (some ear plugs can cause your ears to ache when worn for hours). *My pick: 4. Breathe Right Extra strong nasal strips Nighttime nasal congestion is commonly caused by a cold, allergies, or a deviated septum. You may have tried common cold treatments or allergy products to relieve your nighttime nasal congestion, but those may not provide the relief you are looking for, and many people prefer a drug-free option. This is what is working for my nighttime breathing trouble. *My pick: 5. Bed You spend at least 1/3 of your “day” at bed, sleeping. This 1/3 is usually taken for granted because you’re most active during the other 16 hours and that’s what you think about and care for. But rarely do you ponder about the bed you sleep on. So, this hack is a little more of the pricier side but you really can’t put a price tag on a good night’s sleep. If your mattress if old and you wake up with stiffness, numbness, or aches and pains consider changing your bed. *UPDATE: After sleeping on the Sealy Optimum for a number of nights, I have to recommend the Tempurpedic TEMPUR Breeze line. The Sealy has lost its firmness in just a few weeks of sleeping on it. If soft beds are your thing then go for it. But if you have back issues, too soft a bed can make them worse. *My pick: Although I don’t have this mattress, I’ve slept on tempurpedic beds and they’re amazing. So adding cooling gel is just an improvement over an already stellar product. 6. Blackout blinds Research has shown that cutting out all light sources while we sleep can halt interruptions to our body clocks. Simply put, learning to love the dark prevents changes to our internal rhythm. It turns out we need exposure to ‘good’ darkness at night for quality sleep. So, blackout blinds are a perfect solution to better sleep. Another consideration is that installing new blinds can be expensive. And not worth doing if you’re just renting. That’s why I recommend these. *My pick: 7. Sleep meditation As you probably already know though, thinking leads to worrying and can be a significant cause of sleeplessness. So practicing relaxation techniques to calm your overactive mind and unwind from a busy day can be an effective way to overcome insomnia. I’ve started meditating every day now and it has a powerful impact on stress and boosting mood. *My pick: 8. Yoga poses & deep breathing If meditation is not your thing and maybe your body is a bit achy, try doing some yoga moves and deep breathing. This can help bring the stress levels down so that you get back in bed and sleep effortlessly. This is a tried-and-true strategy that I’ve used for years when I have trouble sleeping. 9. Magnesium before bed If you want to get into deep sleep faster, I suggest trying Magnesium before bed to see if it works out for you. I’ve experimented with various forms and dosages and I recommend threonate, glycinate, taurate, chloride. Stay away from the cheap form like magnesium oxide. In fact, I personally use Ancient Minerals Magnesium Lotion and recommend it to all my clients who have trouble sleeping. Melatonin before bed during nights of troubled sleep or jet lag Melatonin is a very popular sleep aid. It’s naturally produced in your body. You don’t need a prescription for it and can buy it in gummy form or in a fruit drink. When used correctly Melatonin is a safe supplement to take when you are having trouble sleeping. If you have any inflammation going on in your joints, try taking collagen protein and see if it makes a difference for you. *My pick:  2-Whey protein for building muscle Whey is a powerful muscle builder. It digests quickly and has the most leucine (the most important branched chain amino acid for muscle growth) of any food. I go into detail about whey as well as many other supplements. *My pick: Although it’s a combination of whey and collagen, I was impressed with the quality. And my knees started feeling better! Watch the review . 3-Creatine Monohydrate for strength training and mental performance Creatine monohydrate is the most researched performance supplement on the market. It also can help with mental performance and depression. Read about creatine. *My pick: Biocreatine 4–Beta-alanine for lactic acid/glycolytic training I wrote about beta-alanine and the reasons for using it  *My pick:  I know, I know. It’s got more than just Beta-alanine in it. The reason I think this formula is superior is because 1) I tried it and liked it and 2) high levels of beta-alanine give you the tingles. This combo will help you push hard during your workouts without the tingling feeling that high-doses of beta-alanine cause. 5-Magnesium during times of stress These are the same products mentioned in the sleep section. The only point here is that you can use them during times of high stress. No need to wait until bedtime. *My picks: 6-Theanine during times of stress L-theanine can also be taken to balance out the effects of too much coffee, high stress or before bed. I put it in this section because I’m a bigger fan of L-theanine during the day. L-theanine is also found in green tea. Be sure to get matcha green tea if you decide to go the natural route. *My pick:    10 Mental Fitness and Stress Reduction Hacks 1- Meditation It’s something I find to be super powerful. We go to the gym to work our muscles but we also need to work out our minds and our brains. I want you to try the Headspace App. I have used it and I really enjoy it and I feel the difference. If you’re thinking meditation is not your “thing”, the Headspace App and do the 10 days of 10 minutes and make a call based on that. I know I already mentioned meditation in the sleep section. But it’s a biohack that has proven benefits, reduces stress and is cheap to implement. I think supplements are great but things like meditation are greatly underappreciated. 2- Power naps (20-90 minutes) They are free and great to take. I recommend taking from 20 to 90 minutes but be careful with the longer naps. You can wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle and feel awful from a nap but if you keep it to around 20 minutes you can wake up feeling calm and recharged. If you feel burnt out, take a quick nap! 3- Travel How often are you traveling? Traveling is an amazingly underrated investment in yourself it opens you to new insights which often gives people a new purpose for their lives. If you are unable to travel outside of the country go on a staycation.  It’s amazing how a short trip can re-energize and reinvigorate you. 4- Spending time with family and friends We all get caught up in our daily routine that we don’t get a chance to see our extended family and friends as often as we would like. Make it a point to go spend time with them as this will give you a boost of positivity and happiness through the release of the neurotransmitter oxytocin. 5- Spend time in nature This is another thing many of us don’t get to do very often, especially if you live in the city.  Nature offers one of the most reliable boosts to your mental and physical well-being. Make sure you spend some time in nature. 6- Get sun Sun directly to your skin creates vitamin D and if you get it into your eyes it boosts serotonin production. So those are two critical things for optimal health. In fact, if you’ve been lacking in motivation lately and you’ve noticed that you haven’t been outside as much or it has been a little bit gloomy outside that can be as a result of your serotonin levels. Bone Health: Today’s show is about bone health and density. When it comes to bone density issues the two most talked about complications are Osteopenia and Osteoporosis. Osteopenia basically means your bone density is lower than normal. And Osteoporosis is a more severe condition and is diagnosed when your bones become brittle and fragile due to the loss of tissue. Typically, these issues are a result of hormonal changes or a deficiency in calcium or vitamin D. The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) say that the percentage of men 50 years of age or older with osteoporosis of the femur neck or lumbar spine is 4% The percentage of women 50 yrs. of age and over with osteoporosis of the femur neck or lumbar spine: 16% making it 4 times more likely for women to get it. This is mainly due to estrogen levels decreasing after menopause and the fact that most women have smaller and thinner bones. Stop drinking carbonated beverages. Soda, Sparkling water, Champagne all leach calcium from your bones. A Harvard Study on 16 to 20yr. old women showed that half of them were already showing bone loss as a result of soft drink intake. Also, carbonated beverages have phosphates which cause even more calcium loss. Cut back on the Caffeine! With every cup of coffee you drink, you lose 150 mg of calcium in your urine. Decaf is no better because they contain chemicals that interfere with the detoxification process. Cut back on Protein. Taking in too much protein can cause acidity in the body which causes calcium to be lost when you urinate. However, protein is necessary to make strong bones, so we're just saying we need a balance between getting enough without eating so much that you create an acid-alkalinity problem. Lay off the Tums. Tums is one of the worst sources of calcium, It’s composed of calcium carbonate which is a poorly absorbed form of calcium. You want to get Calcium hydroxyapatite or Calcium Citrate which are the best forms of calcium.  Not to mention it's taking away the stomach acid we need to break down and digest our food. What about Sunlight?  You need Vitamin D because it helps to absorb calcium into your bones. Audio Question from Megan: When you do a big event like a marathon or Ironman in the days after the event is it true that you have a bigger caloric need. If so, what would the percentage be? Audio Question from Josh: Can seasonal allergies cause his heart rate to get really really low? In April and May he can't get into Zone 4 or 5 while riding. His standing rate is 40 or 50 BPM! Christian says: My wife and I ran a 1/2 marathon today. She appears to have a significant histamine reaction causing vasodilatation every time she runs significant distances. Her arms and legs turn purplish red and she feels her blood pressure drops. She dumps cold water on her arms each aid station and that helps some. The problem is worse when it is hot outside. Her hydration and nutrition are good. Her liquid nutrition has electrolytes and she adds a salt tablet to her water bottle. I recall your podcast interview about not needing electrolytes but adding salt seems to help her. What other thoughts do you have? Audio Question from Brian: He is planning a 70.3 in January. Which program of yours would you recommend: Tri-Ripped or Triathlon Dominator? Audio Question from Hunt(?): He recently watched "The Truth About Exercise" and saw a genetic test that can guess the potential of an individual's aerobic capacity. He's interested in learning more about that test. Audio Question from Jerry: He fell 6 feet on to a mat while bordering which caused pain in the arch of his foot. He called it quits, went home and the next morning there was swelling and bruising (hematoma). He has been using ice, ultrasound and e-stim and is wondering if there are any other ways to speed up the healing? Tommy asks: My wife is a runner and suffers from ulcerative colitis. She has a really clean diet no grains, no dairy or legumes. Her recent flair up sent her to the doctor and they put her on prednisone. 30mg 2 weeks, 20mg 2 weeks, 10mg 2 weeks. Within 24 hr of her first dose her symptoms were much improved. What side effects can she expect, will it effect her running? Is it possible to offset the prednisone side effects with diet and supplementation. What can she expect as the dosage decreases? ~ In my response, I recommend the GAPS diet. Adam says: My wife suffers from migraines at least once every 2 months (usually once a month), to the point where she's bed ridden (normally a few hours) until she throws up then the pain subsides within an hour. The doctors reckon it could be her pill, but I wanted your take on it. She eats the standard typical high cho mod pro low fat (enjoys the odd egg) approach diet. Has no known illnesses. Is a fitness instructor and healthy. Have you heard of this before? Is there any known issues of substances or food groups that could induce this reaction? Dylan says: I know some guys at my gym are talking this 7-Keto DHEA stuff up. Is it a scam? My number one goal is fat loss. If it can indeed increase my thyroid T3, I'll buy the mess out of it! Phil asks:I am way into minimalist running shoes and use them all the time I am at the gym - for weight training, treadmill, elliptical, rowing. I use the Merrell Trail Glove, which looks like a "normal" shoe (no separate toe compartments). During the week, I try to mix up the cardio day-to-day. There are spinning bikes in the gym with toe clips and I'd like to add them to my cardio repertoire. Given my time constraints, I cannot switch to my (stiff) cycling shoes. So my question is - What are your thoughts on cycling (100 rpm hard intervals) in minimalist running shoes? I have tried the shoes without any problems, but I wondered if you knew of anything showing this to be contraindicated.
