Tired of hearing the same Siri voice on Apple products? Soon you'll have choices.
The mathematics curriculum of today was created before computers. Conrad Wolfram has written a book, The Math(s) Fix and how AI can be part of this process of learning new math. He says we're "making humans into third rate calculators instead of helping humans be problem solvers." He also argues that math should be approachable for everyone and we spend too much time in schools on the wrong tasks. We even talk about some of the charts and numbers shared during the covid19 health crisis and the need for critical thinking in every area of society. www.coolcatteacher.com/e680 Sponsor: Welcome TGR Foundation and Discovery Education as a sponsor to my podcast.

Enjoy
The Google assistant is a powerful digital assistant. Most would say better then Apple's Siri. However, google assistant missed the mark on the Google nest or home hub. Listen to my review to find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blindpodcaster/support

Something of a sleepy week in British politics, a time in which nothing happened of any real significance.
I sidste uge lancerede Google deres digitale assistent her i Danmark.
Amazon's voice-enabled Alexa can now tell you who's playing at a local concert venue, what time the show starts and when your favorite artist is coming to town. The same data is hard to find with competitors Google Home and Apple's Siri. Jefferson Graham demonstrates on Talking Tech.
This week, we invite you to meet Major General (Ret) Earl D. Matthews: He spent three decades at the nexus of big budgets and cybersecurity, including stints as Director, Cyberspace Operations and Chief Information Security Officer at HQ, U.S. Air Force, and VP for Enterprise Security Solutions at Hewlett-Packard. In his current role as Senior VP and Chief Strategy Officer at Verodin, Inc., he champions the concept of security instrumentation, a process that continuously validates the effectiveness of each security element in place. During this episode, he'll cover a gamut of cybersecurity issues that include the privacy issues at Facebook, the DNC hack, along with managing your personal privacy at a time when tens of millions of Americans have had their credit reports hacked. Major General Matthews will also reveal two episodes of ID theft that impacted his own family. You'll also hear from tech columnist and former industry analyst Joe Wilcox, who writes for BetaNews. During this episode, Joe will explain why he regards Apple's Siri voice assistant as worse than Microsoft's Skype, despite all the connection glitches with the latter. Will hiring former Google executives help Apple make Siri more responsive and accurate, without sacrificing your security? You'll also hear about Google I/O and Android P, and about all those fake news reports that the iPhone X was unsuccessful. For two quarters straight, however, Apple reported that the iPhone X was not only its best selling smartphone for each week it was on sale, but the hottest selling smartphone on the planet. Gene shares his 20 years experience with the iMac, which began with the original Bondi Blue model that he beta tested for Apple as part of the former Customer Quality Feedback (CQF) program. You'll also hear about the Apple Watch and whether it makes sense for Apple to switch Macs from Intel to ARM CPUs.
This weekend our guests focus mainly on Apple's 2018 Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) and its June 4th keynote featuring CEO Tim Cook and several members of his executive team. During that event, the wraps were taken off iOS 12, macOS 10.14 Mojave, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5; all will be released this fall. We talk about the splashy new features, and the ones that aren't so flashy but might impact the user experience. Among the topics discussed are the planned improvements to Apple's Siri digital assistant, which includes Siri Shortcuts, an easy automation feature reminiscent of AppleScript, and the planned performance improvements of at least 50% to older hardware that runs iOS 12. With macOS 10.14, the new Dark Mode will be profiled, along with announced Finder improvements that'll make it easier to manage cluttered desktops on your Mac. There will also be discussions about what's forthcoming in tvOS 12, and whether any of it is compelling, and what about the walkie-talkie feature planed for watchOS 5, which will impact Apple Watch this fall? Our special guests include outspoken podcaster and columnist Kirk McElhearn, who also details his concerns about Skype, and a problem he encountered due to a severe lack of security protections. During the second half of the show, we feature commentator Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor for The Mac Observer, who will also talk about the experience of watching his bed-in-a-box expand to several times its size after removing it from the box and separating the plastic wrappings. Jeff will also focus some on pop culture, and the latest security problems with Facebook.

An all-star duo (Pete Erickson of Modev / Voice Summit; Amy Stapleton of Tellables / VoiceFirstFiction.com) discuss the latest in voice technology news, including Google's new investment program for companies developing for Google Assistant, new reporting on primary use cases for smart speakers, Apple's Siri caught in another gaffe, a Slate article about dating men who yell at Alexa, and the debut of a new type of Pac-Man on Amazon's Alexa platform. This Week In Voice is hosted by Bradley Metrock (CEO, Score Publishing) and is part of the VoiceFirst.FM podcast network.
The guys talk about the 6th generation iPad, Apple's Siri team gets a big upgrade, progressive web apps arrive on iOS 11, Facebook is in trouble, and ... music videos!! All this and more!
On this week's episode, we feature outspoken podcaster and columnist Kirk McElhearn, who focuses heavily on his experiences with Apple's HomePod. He explains the problems he's found with the product, particularly a bassy response, and problems with Apple's Siri voice assistant. Will future software updates allow you to adjust the frequency profile of a HomePod, other than with iTunes? What about improving Siri's recognition accuracy? What about eliminating the problem where it leaves white rings on wood surfaces that are tied or waxed? Kirk also covers possible future Macs, such as a new Mac Pro and whether there will be an upgrade to the Mac mini, which hasn't been updated since 2014? Gene continues his suggestion that HP's Z2 Mini Workstation is a potential future direction with the Mac mini, offering powerful performance at a relatively low cost. You'll also hear from commentator Bryan Chaffin, co-founder and co-publisher of The Mac Observer, He also talks about the HomePad, and his perception of its sonic quality and future prospects. What about the still-delayed AirPlay 2 feature that was first promised to Apple users in iOS 11 last year? What about the curious disconnect between unproven claims that iPhone X sales collapsed last year, compared to Apple's own financials that indicated high sales and revenue for iPhones, and reports that the iPhone X was the highest selling model on the planet during the weeks it was on sale? How do such false stories get started and why do they continue even after Apple reviewed the truth? There's also talk about the unexpected success of the Apple Watch which, in 2017, became the number one best selling wearable on the planet. This comes after the Apple Watch was regarded as a tepid performer in the marketplace for so long.
This week's Tech.pinions podcast features Carolina Milanesi and Bob O'Donnell analyzing recent developments around digital assistants such as Apple's Siri, discussing AMD chip flaws, chatting about the upcoming Apple Education event, and talking about Fitbit's new smartwatch.

Woo hoo! for the first time in two years, Fox 5 anchor Annie Yu joins the gang! And as always, she is great fun: she sings, raps, dances, talks about her parents and her cute 5-year-old daughter's odd relationship with Apple's Siri! Plus, Annie and Tony talk about what it's like teaming up on Saturday mornings for "Fox News Morning". Also: Gary, Annie and Rob take the "American Coke vs. Mexican Coke" taste test! And: Another "wood" update (!); a special "Happy Birthday" announcement: and new music from U2! Rock on!
To the extent smart speaker owners run voice queries through their speakers vs. phones it benefits the two smart speaker leaders - Amazon and Google vs. Apple. Apple's Siri lags Amazon's AI and Google's AI in terms of speed and accuracy. This dynamic will only increase the performance delta between the two market leaders and Apple. AI's need "reps" to improve. Less share means less reps, fewer learning opportunities.

Apple's AI - Siri - is deeply inferior to Google's AI. Both Google and Amazon have an advantage over Apple in terms of search query capture which means the quality of the output for Google and Amazon will be superior for the foreseeable future.
Google's Assistant is now on the iPhone, where it greatly outshines Apple's Siri. Listen in as Jefferson Graham demonstrates.

Now we have an idea what it might look like and when it could be revealed. Apple's Siri-based smart speaker and home hub has an "over 50 percent chance" of being announced at WWDC, according to our homeboy Ming Chi Kuo. Kuo said Apple's smart home product will likely launch in the second half of 2017 and cost more than the Amazon Echo, $179. The device will supposedly support AirPlay with "excellent acoustics performance" from one woofer and seven tweeters. Kuo said its performance will be similar to the iPhone 6/6s. Last week, leaker Sonny Dickson likewise said Apple's smart speaker could be announced as early as WWDC. He said the device will run a variation of iOS with unspecified Beats technology, in addition to a Mac Pro-like concave top with built-in controls and speaker meshing covering the majority of its surface. A report from The Information said Apple's smart home speaker would be able to control appliances, locks, lights, and curtains through Siri voice commands. It added that some of the prototypes in testing have facial recognition sensors Apple places orders for its Amazon Echo rival http://www.cultofmac.com/479523/apple-places-orders-amazon-echo-rival/ Digitimes is reporting that Inventec, the Taiwan company that makes Apple’s popular AirPods, received Apple’s order for the the Siri Smart speaker, Siri could soon recognize your voice for added security http://www.cultofmac.com/475095/siri-could-soon-recognize-your-voice-for-added-security/ Apple is busy working on innovative tech like the ability for Siri to recognize individual users’ voices, according to a recently-published patent application from Apple. AirPods get highest-ever satisfaction score for a first-year Apple product http://www.cultofmac.com/479201/airpods-customer-satisfaction/ AirPods are the most beloved product Apple has launched in years, based on a new survey that found an astonishing percentage of AirPod owners are extremely satisfied. In a newly published study conducted by Creative Strategies and Experian, a total of 98 percent of AirPod owners said they are either “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with Apple’s new wireless buds. Over 80 percent of customers said they are very satisfied. Microsoft’s answer to the MacBook suffers one big flaw http://www.cultofmac.com/479397/microsofts-answer-macbook-one-big-flaw/ Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop, with its sleek design and a super-sharp display, might look like a worthy competitor to the MacBook Starting at $999, the Surface Laptop ships with an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a battery that lasts up to 14.5 hours in between charges. Windows 10 S only runs apps downloaded from the Windows Store! But uou can upgrade to Windows Pro for $50. Twitter flips out over mysterious Tim Cook tweet http://www.cultofmac.com/479663/tim-cook-deletes-mystery-tweet/ Apple CEO Tim Cook set Twitter ablaze with speculation today — and all it took was a simple smiley face emoji. Cook sent out a tweet with just a smiley face emoji this morning. No other context was provided, and the tweet got deleted shortly later, leading Apple fans on Twitter to wonder what the most powerful man in tech was really trying to say.
This session we talk about the ever growing personal assistants trend. There are many out on the market but the 3 major companies that stand out are Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and Google assistant. Sadly I have to throw in Microsoft Cortana too. With our hands on these 3 items, we give our 4 cents to the discussion of what we see as the leading candidate with this growing voice activating trend.
Last year, shortly after visiting New Zealand, Taiwanese political activist and civic hacker Audrey Tang was appointed as a Cabinet Minister with special responsibility for solving communication quandries within and outside government - making her the first transgender person appointed to Taiwan's executive. Audrey's background includes helping design Apple's Siri technology's voice recognition abilities, and creating social media that helps organisations learn about how employee's work flow and institutional knowledge. Audrey was closely involved with Taiwan's Occupy movement, and was a key player in helping democratise decision-making after the unpopularity of the previous government. Taiwan is a young democracy going through rapid changes - many of them facilitated by an attitude of 'open government' - that would've have seemed impossible a short time ago. After her rapturously received talk at the tech focused Open Source//Open Society conference Audrey spoke to The Weekend producer Shaun D Wilson.

Susan Bennett and Karen Jacobsen are voice actors perhaps best known for being the original American and Australian voices of Apple's Siri personal assistant. AJ and Joerg talk to them about their experiences and thoughts on being two of the most recognizable voices in the world.

Talking to computers has long been a staple of science fiction, but today it's a reality, says Bill Meisel, a technology analyst and author of the recent book, The Software Society. The importance of this trend is exemplified by battles between large technology companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung that see it as a fundamental shift in the way we deal with digital systems. Today, the battle is largely over smartphones, with Apple's Siri and Google's voice search being the best-known examples of how far the technology has come. But the trend is moving to tablet computers and the new SmartTVs, as well as increasing used inside companies and by professionals for efficiency. The key, Meisel says, is technology that understands the content of the speech--"natural language understanding"--when the communication with a device is by voice or typing. Increasingly, the user manual for most digital systems will be "just say or type what you want," and your digital "personal assistant" will try to give you the result you want as directly as possible, with minimal navigation. When your request is unclear, the assistant will engage you in a dialog for clarification. It will even be proactive, telling you of an incoming message or upcoming appointment without being asked. Those capabilities exist today in a limited form, but will continue to get better.
