Sunita L. Williams (Suni) was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998 and is a veteran of two space missions Expeditions 14/15 and 32/33. She is currently training for the first post-certification mission of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft – the second crewed flight for that vehicle – and her third long duration mission aboard the International Space Station. Williams and her crewmates are working closely with Boeing to develop their new spacecraft systems, which will provide roundtrip crew transportation services to the International Space Station and, along with SpaceX’s CrewDragon, return the ability to launch humans into space from United States soil. Personal Data: Born September 19, 1965 in Euclid, Ohio to Dr. Deepak and Bonnie Pandya.  Considers Needham, Massachusetts to be her hometown. Suni and her husband Michael enjoy hanging out with their dogs, working out, working on houses, working on cars, working on airplanes, hiking and camping. Education: Needham High School, Needham, Massachusetts, 1983. Bachelor of Science in Physical Science, U.S. Naval Academy, 1987. Master of Science in Engineering Management, Florida Institute of Technology, 1995. Experience: Williams received her commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy from the United States Naval Academy in May 1987. After a six-month temporary assignment at the Naval Coastal System Command, she received her designation as a Basic Diving Officer and then reported to Naval Aviation Training Command. She was designated a Naval Aviator in July 1989. She then reported to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 3 for initial H46, Seaknight, training. Upon completion of this training, she was assigned to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 8 in Norfolk, Virginia, and made overseas deployments to the Mediterranean, Red Sea and the Persian Gulf in support of Desert Shield and Operation Provide Comfort. In September 1992, she was the Officer-in-Charge of an H-46 detachment sent to Miami, Florida for Hurricane Andrew Relief Operations onboard USS Sylvania. Williams was selected for United States Naval Test Pilot School and began the course in January 1993. After graduation in December 1993, she was assigned to the Rotary Wing Aircraft Test Directorate as an H-46 Project Officer, and V-22 Chase Pilot in the T-2. While there, she was also assigned as the squadron Safety Officer and flew test flights in the SH-60B/F, UH-1, AH‑1W, SH-2, VH-3, H-46, CH-53 and the H-57. She has logged more than 3000 flight hours in over 30 different aircraft. NASA Experience: Selected as an astronaut by NASA in June 1998, she reported for training in August 1998.  Following the return of Expedition 1, Williams worked within the Robotics branch on the station’s Robotic Arm and the follow-on Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator.  As a NEEMO2 crew member, she lived underwater in the Aquarius habitat for 9 days.  After her first flight, she served as Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office. She then supported a long-duration mission as Flight Engineer for Expedition 32 and International Space Station Commander for Expedition 33. Williams has spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions; she ranks second on the all-time U.S. endurance list for females. With 50 hours and 40 minutes, she is second on the list of total cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut. Spaceflight Experience: Expedition 14/15 (December 9, 2006 to June 22, 2007).  Williams launched with the crew of STS-116 on December 9, 2006, docking with the International Space Station on December 11, 2006.  As a member of the Expedition 14 crew, Williams served as Flight Engineer.  While onboard, she established a world record for females with four spacewalks totaling 29 hours and 17 minutes.    Expedition 32/33 (July 14 to November 18, 2012). Williams launched in July 14, 2012. Williams spent four months conducting research and exploration aboard the orbiting laboratory. She landed in Kazakhstan on November 18, 2012, after spending 127 days in space. With 50 hours and 40 minutes, Williams once again held the record for total cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut (has since been overtaken by Peggy Whitson with 10 spacewalks). In addition, Williams, who has spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions, now ranks sixth on the all-time U.S. endurance list, and second all-time for a female astronaut. She is currently training for the first post-certification mission of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft – the second crewed flight for that vehicle – and her third long duration mission aboard the International Space Station. We Introduced ourselves with the Goofy Question: If you could live somewhere else in the world for a year, where would it be? Tanea - Shenzhen! That’s where I’m moving, but I considered Vietnam, Spain, and Rwanda too. Lee: absent the cold, I’d love to live in New York City for a year. There is something so invigorating about being in the city that I can’t really explain, and that I’d love to spend a year taking in more of. Ryan: If cost of living weren’t a consideration, I’d love to spend time in the Monterrey California area. I love the climate, the views, and the number of things you can do there. Aaron: I’d also go city as well. Either London or Paris (possibly Madrid). How many different levels of science courses exist in your school? Are students tracked? How firm is that tracking? Lee: on-level, Pre-AP (to be called Advanced, I think next year), AP, IB, dual credit, Foundations (for SpEd students) Ryan: We just have “regular” and “honors.” AP and dual-credit fall under “honors.” Tanea: Reg, Honors, AP, Dual Enrollment Aaron: Fundamentals, College Prep 1, College Prep 2, Accellerated/Enriched, Honors, then AP as a second year course. How does your school go about recommending for courses the next year? Has the pandemic caused this to change? Ryan: Students fill out a Google Form and we have discussions with the students about what class they’d like to take. I’m in a unique situation being the only science teacher, because the classes I offer are somewhat dependent upon what the students want to take. For example, we don’t normally offer a second-level (like AP) chemistry course, but the students wanted to take one this year, so I agreed to teach it (even though I have no experience teaching it). We have a lot of flexibility in that regard. Of course, we have some classes that we always offer, such as AP Biology and Anatomy & Physiology, and we also have some required classes, such as Physical Science for freshmen and Biology I for sophomores. The pandemic hasn’t really changed our course offerings. Tanea: In science they have to submit an application to their current science teacher with thee current transcript, and that teacher makes the registration option open to them Lee: what science classes a kid takes is partially determined by their graduation plan. In TX we have a few different graduation plans kids can follow and each one has a different requirement in terms of number of science courses required. All students must take biology I as a graduation requirement regardless of plan. The pandemic hasn’t really affected what sciences are available for kids to take. Our district is expanding dual credit opportunities for kids but that was the plan all along. Aaron: Teachers go into our grading/attendance program and make recommendations based on the grades up to that point, plus prerequisits of the next year’s course. We are supposed to have conversations with students before those recommendations take place. If student’s families don’t agree with he recommendations, they can work through an override process. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of January 18, 2021.  This episode is a revised repeat of an episode from January 2015. MUSIC – ~16 sec – instrumental This week, we feature a tune whose name and note patterns recall how rivers and streams follow laws of energy and physics.  Have a listen for about 40 seconds. MUSIC – ~39 sec – instrumental You’ve been listening to part of “Minor Meander,” by No Strings Attached, on their 1999 album, “In the Vinyl Tradition Volume II,” from Enessay Music.  As the tune repeatedly builds up and then cascades down, it captures the pattern of solar energy evaporating water up into the atmosphere, and gravitational energy pulling water back to the landscape, through stream and river channels, and ultimately to the ocean.  That energy gives water the forceto erode and shape a stream’s channel and floodplain.  Water’s erosive force—which varies depending on the water’s rate of flow—meets different levels of resistance in the various kinds of rocks, soils, living things, and human structures over which water flows.  The complicated interaction between stream force and materials resistance results in a variety of stream-channel patterns.  These pattern range from straight, single-channel streams to braided rivers with many winding and intersecting channels.  One of the possible patterns is large changes in direction, called meanders or bends, seen famously in the Seven Bends area of the North Fork Shenandoah River in Shenandoah County, Va. Thanks to No Strings Attached for permission to use this week’s music, and we close with about 15 more seconds of musical energy in “Minor Meander.” MUSIC – ~15 sec – instrumental SHIP’S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Stewart Scales for his banjo version of Cripple Creek to open and close this show.  In Blacksburg, I’m Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. We can all admit there are some ideas or subjects that maybe we've referenced or heard about, but we don't fully understand. Luckily for us, Reddit, the popular social sharing and discussion site, gave us a solution. It's called ELI5, or Explain it Like I'm 5 (years old)! ELI5 is where users post seemingly complicated subjects and ideas, and ask someone in the community - usually a subject matter expert - to explain it in a way that a 5-year-old would understand.  Strictly adhering to what a 5-year-old would comprehend isn't the actual goal. It's really meant to be inspiration for how to break down something complicated into something simple. We're glowing with excitement to bring you the second episode of a special podcast feature we've created with our friends at AfterShokz - the leader in athlete-friendly bone conduction headphones - featuring an idea that has everyone talking: solar energy. ☀️ In episode 2, Tim dives into conversation with Holland Smith, who has an impressive background and education that ranges from Physical Science and Solar Energy to Material Science and Engineering. Holland has a gift for framing this particular concept in a helpful analogy, and he's the perfect person to breakdown solar energy and exactly how it works.  Naturally, we asked the most simple, yet complicated questions - How do solar panels actually work and how does sunlight get turned into electricity? On the road to answering that compelling question, Holland also shares his thoughts on energy generation and how it plays an important role in our lives. “It explains the impact we have on the environment and it plays a role in critical political decisions and resource wars.” Don't worry, we don't get too political, but it's a good perspective check on what impact our energy decisions have and what drives them. Listen to this ELI5 episode and find out how solar energy is just like a group of children on a playground!

Dr. Jonathan Lunine is the David C. Duncan Professor in the Physical Science and chair of the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University. He is also the vice president and a co-founder of the Society of Catholic Scientists. In this “part 5” of our interview, Dr. Lunine notes that planetary science was not always a distinct field. It drew upon components of astronomy or the geological study of the moon, for example. Astrobiology, with a goal of studying microbial life forms that may be found on exoplanets, is now at the point of relative infancy where planetary science stood about 50 years ago. Enceladus, one of the dozens of moons orbiting Saturn, is one site worth inspecting in the search for life. It could be based on carbon-bearing molecules different from those found in Earth life. The Cassini mission reported on plumes of water vapor and ice emanating from that moon. Dr. Lunine was part of a group proposing a mission called Enceladus Life Finder. Saturn’s moon Titan has seas filled with liquid methane. Could there be a form of biochemistry that works in liquid methane? It’s worth looking for, Dr. Lunine said. The Society of Catholic Scientists, with more than 1,000 members, is expanding its activities. The international group’s next annual meeting will consider the possibility of extraterrestrial life and the implications of such discoveries relevant to faith. The conference will be held in June 2020 at Providence College. Image by Reimund Bertrams from Pixabay

In this week's episode, we discuss the possibility of extraterrestrial life in our own solar system. Dr. Lunine talked about extraterrestrial life. It’s very possible that at least microbial life exists on other planets, he said, but the chances of complex, multicellular life are much more difficult to estimate. We simply don't know what the possibilities are for life beyond the chemistry that it uses here on Earth. A potential tragedy that we would want to avoid at almost any cost would be the introduction of terrestrial microbes into a viable environment elsewhere, where they could become invasive species, grow and potentially outcompete the native life, which we would never get the chance to study and understand. NASA and other space agencies have policies in place to address this risk... hopefully, they will work. Dr. Jonathan Lunine is the David C. Duncan Professor in the Physical Science and chair of the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University. He is also the vice president and a co-founder of the Society of Catholic Scientists. Christianity and Extraterrestrials?: A Catholic Perspective , by Marie George, is a book worth reading, Dr. Lunine said. The discovery of planets outside our Solar System has revolutionized planetary science. The Kepler space telescope mission, with its nine-year voyage which ended last year, made possible the detection of thousands of planets. It’s now understood, Lunine said, that planet formation is a common part of star formation. Lunine noted that Cornell University, where he is on the faculty, has many new avenues of astrophysics and planetary science research. The Carl Sagan Institute hosts a multidisciplinary team studying exoplanets. Half of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics went to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for their discovery of the first exoplanet around an ordinary star. Image by ChadoNihi from Pixabay

In this “part 2” of our interview, Dr. Lunine cited the book Secularity and Science by Elaine Ecklund (mentioned and linked in episode 79) and co-authors. The perceived conflict between faith and science is largely a Western phenomenon, according to Ecklund’s research, and it’s especially visible in the United States. Elsewhere, cultural education more fully incorporates an education about religion, so these people are more comfortable with the integration of the two. He said Catholic news services and The Christian Science Monitor are among the organizations where journalists are more likely interested in the combination of topics in science and religion.

Dr. Jonathan Lunine is the David C. Duncan Professor in the Physical Science and chair of the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University. He is also the vice president and a co-founder of the Society of Catholic Scientists. Here is information about the Vatican Observatory. It was one of the starting points for Lunine’s exploration of the compatibility between science and the Catholic faith. He met Stephen Barr in 2014, and this led to their discussions about establishing the Society of Catholic Scientists. Here is a talk given by Barr at the University of Chicago. Here is a talk by Lunine about Georges Lemaitre, a Catholic priest recognized as an originator of the Big Bang theory. In our conversation, Lunine described a presentation on Lemaitre that he gave at Cornell as a kind of “coming-out party” for him as a Catholic convert with his own story to tell. He has addressed Catholic students with the advice to share one’s faith story but to be judicious, following the practice of St. Paul, who adapted his messages to his audiences. A recommendation for discussions of faith: “There’s a time and a place for everything.” Lunine mentioned Elaine Ecklund, who has studied what scientists think about the American culture’s understanding that science and religion are incompatible. Harvard physicist Lisa Randall, who has said belief in God is incompatible with science, is an example of the resistance to faith that many scientists encounter in academia, Lunine said. Our culture gives much credibility to scientists, who owe it to their audiences to be clear about when they are speaking as individuals rather than scholarly experts. Lunine also mentioned the Thomistic Institute, which has a chapter on the Cornell campus founded by a graduate student. Part of the difficulty in the dialogue between science and religion is a popular but erroneous view that the Bible was intended to be a book of science. Here is a discussion of St. Augustine’s examination of this claim. Another challenge, Lunine said, is that our children generally grow up without a substantive education in religion.

He rides an e-bike, he made money out of Bitcoin but wouldn't touch it now, and he's been involved in some pretty big deals behind the scenes with some iconic Kiwi businesses, but you may have never heard of Lance Wiggs. Lance, like many players in the venture capitalism space are smart cookies who know their stuff - but are busy behind the scenes making it all happen. Punakaiki Fund Limited makes long-term investments into high-growth, revenue-generating New Zealand companies. They currently hold $41 million in assets (September 2018) and have investments in 20 Portfolio Companies. One of the reasons we had Lance on the show is that Punakaiki Fund is making a retail offer to the public, and everyday investors can access something within a short window of time. For as little as $215 you can also own a slice of the action but before you do anything, please read this and ideally seek out your own independent investment advice. (The following is an excerpt from the PDS) Lance Wiggs is the primary contact for most of the existing and new investments, and is a director of 11 of Punakaiki Fund’s Portfolio Companies. He was formerly a director of Linewize until his resignation following its acquisition by Family Zone in late 2017, and of Devoli until early 2017, when he was replaced by Chris Humphreys. Lance and Chris commenced working on what would become LWCM and Punakaiki Fund in late 2012, and together they have made 80 different investment placements in the four and a half years since the formal launch of Punakaiki Fund in April 2014. Lance combines a wide variety of global experience with helping high-growth companies in New Zealand. Lance completed three years of contracting to New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s (NZTE) Better by Capital programme in early 2017, where he helped over 100 companies of all stages become more 'invest-able' through intensive workshops. He now occasionally assists clients of NZTE Investments, with Lance holding a contract with NZTE to be retained on an ad-hoc basis. Lance was also formerly a practitioner with the NZTE Better by Design programme. Lance is a member of two Return on Science Investment Committees, ICT where he was the Chair for several years, and Physical Science. These committees, convened by Auckland University’s UniServices, make investment recommendations and provide advice to pre-commercial stage researchers and companies. Lance was the investment-banking advisor for Trade Me on its sale to Fairfax Media, and has advised a large number of local early-stage companies over many years. He was an Engagement Manager with McKinsey & Company in Washington DC, contracted to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London and consulted to BHP Billiton plants in South Africa, Australia and Mozambique. Lance was also an elected Councillor for InternetNZ, where he was a member of the Audit Committee. Lance has an MBA from Yale University (Strategy, Finance) and a Bachelor of Technology (Hons, Product Development) from Massey University. He has been a regular judge for the Hi-Tech Awards, BNZ Start-up Alley and other events. Lance has a number of active and inactive private investments, made before Punakaiki Fund was founded. The Manager Punakaiki Fund’s manager is Lance Wiggs Capital Management Limited (“LWCM”), owned by Lance Wiggs and Chris Humphreys. Lance and Chris provide a combination of finance and business experience in the technology, internet and design-led sectors, and are joined by two staff in their Auckland office.

All processes in the universe are basically energy conversion. In the area of quantum physics, time and relationship are of primal importance. The perspective from which―or, in which―we look at things makes a big difference in our world view―and our universe view―and ultimately in our eternal view. God could have created the heavens and the Planet Earth in six nanoseconds if He had wanted to. There was a reason he chose six literal 24-hour days to do so. This teaching will explain HOW we can know―and WHY we should know―the Bible account of Creation is true. Also, scientific fact will be presented to prove why evolution could NOT be the answer for creation; this should help build your faith in a literal interpretation of the Creation account in Genesis Chapter One. _____________________________________ CREATION OF HEAVENS AND EARTH For the purpose of disclosure, let me assert that I am a graduate engineer. I received my B.S. in Industrial Engineering before attending 11 other colleges and universities. At the first institution I was the only student to ever receive a grade of 100 for the semester in the field of Electro Chemistry (which is by no means an easy subject―it is NOT even taught at many schools of higher learning). During one of the different psychology classes I have taken my I.Q. was ascertained to be 165, which is well above the floor of genius level. I am by no means brilliant, but I do understand certain laws of physics and science, and have worked in those areas, writing my thesis in a chemical laboratory, and working consistently in research and development using instruments such as the Atom Counter as well as the usual instrumentation for determining qualitative and quantitative analyses. My views are based―not from the standpoint of one who believes the Bible is the Word of God, although I do―but from the standpoint of one who has studied and worked in the fields of science and engineering. As an engineer I could no more believe in the theory of evolution than the cow jumping over the moon. Not only is there NO evidence that evolution has ever taken place, but there is solid evidence that evolution could NEVER take place. Evolution could not even be possible because it violates both the First and Second Law of Thermodynamics. I will explain below. SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS The Second Law of Thermodynamics is also known as the Entropy Principle, which is one of the most universal and fixed laws known to science. “There is a general natural tendency of all observed systems to go from order to disorder, reflecting dissipation of energy available for future transformation—the law of increasing entropy." All processes in the universe are basically energy conversion. Thermodynamics is a compound of two Greek words, therme ("heat") and dunamis ("power"). It is the science of heat energy (or, heat power) and its conversion to other forms of energy. Everything that exists in the universe is some form of energy, and everything that happens is a type or form of energy conversion. With this in mind, let us discuss the First Law of Thermodynamics. FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS One of the best definitions for the First Law is from Isaac Asimov: "In the Game of Energy and Thermodynamics You Can’t Break Even," Smithsonian Institute Journal: “Energy can be transferred from one place to another, or transformed from one form to another, but it [energy] can be neither created nor destroyed. Or, we can put it another way: The total quantity of energy in the universe is constant. When the total quantity of something does not change, we say that it is conserved. The two statements given above, then, are two ways of expressing 'the law of conservation of energy.' This law is considered the most powerful and most fundamental generalization about the universe that scientists have ever been able to make.” Before we go on, let's consider something Asimov said. “Energy … can be neither created nor destroyed.” Energy can NOT be created because God is the only One Who can create energy and He ceased creative process in the universe after the first six days. That is the purpose for the Sabbath: to rest from our labor, to receive BLESSING from God, and to reflect on the creative glory and goodness of God. (Torah: Genesis 2:3) On the other hand, energy can NOT be destroyed because God upholds all things in creation by the Word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). In the area of quantum physics, time and relationship are of primal importance. Many theories relating to time have been developed over the years. Probably the most famous is that developed by Albert Einstein: the Theory of Relativity. I read his work as a young boy. The derived formula "E = mc2," or "energy equals mass times the velocity of light squared," was praised for decades as the frontier of thought in this area; however, recent scientific postulation and research has leaned toward discrediting part, if not all, of this theory. Even in the most advanced area of quantum physics today, it is known that the universe at its core is some sort of relationship of energy that we can NOT control. In the area of string theory today, the comparison picture (relational size and properties) is this: the universe is to the earth, as the earth is to an atom, as an atom is to a “string” (that is, a string in string theory). The issue is not the big-ness or the out-ness … or the small-ness or the in-ness … but the real issue is multiple dimensions of reality. In other words, not “either - or” but “yes – and.” String theorists now say they can prove eleven (11) dimensions of reality, and maybe 12, 13 or 14. The perspective from which―or, in which―we look at things makes a big difference in our world view―and our universe view―and ultimately in our eternal view. If we look at things in a dream world, as the evolutionist does (even in our human three-dimensional perspective), where there is NO sustainable evidence – from the past or present – we are saying willingly in our heart (and NOT our mind) - “There is NO God.” At least, NOT the Creator God. "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is NO God.” (Psalm 14:1) The present underpinning of the universe is conservation of energy, not creation. No creation in the universe has taken place since the first six days. The evolutionist has NO valid answer to the following questions: 1. Where did all the energy come from in the first place (Who started everything); and, 2. Why is energy constant (being conserved)? The First Law of Thermodynamics is a strong scientific testimony against evolution because it proves constancy and stability in the universe. However, the Second Law of Thermodynamics is even more potent in that it completely obliterates any rationale for evolutionary thinking. R.B. Lindsay, in his article in American Scientist, titled, “Entropy Consumption and Values in Physical Science,” states: "It is in the transformation process that Nature appears to exact a penalty and this is where the second principle makes its appearance. For every naturally occurring transformation of energy is accompanied, somewhere, by a loss in the availability of energy for the future performance of work." In any energy conversion there is an amount of energy which becomes UNavailable for subsequent processes or work. It will be nonrecoverable. The late Henry Morris, PhD., states this succinctly: “Thus, the Second Law proves, as certainly as science can prove anything whatever, that the universe had a beginning. Similarly, the First Law shows that the universe could not have begun itself. >>> The total quantity of energy in the universe is a constant, but the quantity of available energy is decreasing.

She is a special education teacher and lead teacher in her department for Biology and Physical Science at Eisenhower High School. Emily is participating in a grassroots effort by teachers across the state to bring funding back to the Oklahoma classroom and win a fair salary for Oklahoma teachers and education support staff. We talk to Emily about the statewide teacher walkout planned for April 2nd, placing it in the context of more than three years of political mobilization aimed at addressing the public education crisis in Oklahoma. Emily describes the dire conditions for both teachers and students, even as massive oil profits in the state are taxed at an absurdly low rate. With low wages forcing many teachers to work additional jobs, experienced teachers are fleeing the state and inadequately trained substitutes are being relied on more and more. Teachers are struggling to do their best in crumbling facilities with outdated and disintegrating textbooks, as the GOP-controlled state government has significantly decreased classroom funding. We talk about planning and preparation for April 2nd, as well as the support teachers are receiving from students, parents, and the broader community. We discuss the recent success of striking West Virginia teachers and the influence that this has had on teachers in Oklahoma, as well as teachers in other "red" states that are considering striking. Emily also talks about growing up in a deeply conservative state, and how her politics have shifted dramatically to the left as a result of what she has experienced teaching in Oklahoma. Children make large demands upon us. We owe it to them to initiate an immense number of interests. Thou hast set my feet in a large room; should be the glad cry of every intelligent soul. Life should be all living, and not merely a tedious passing of time; not all doing or all feeling or all thinking––the strain would be too great––but, all living; that is to say, we should be in touch wherever we go, whatever we hear, whatever we see, with some manner of vital interest. We cannot give the children these interests; we prefer that they should never say they have learned botany or conchology, geology or astronomy. The question is not,––how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education––but how much does he care? and about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? and, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?" (Vol. 3, pp. 170-71) “Where science does not teach a child to wonder and admire it has perhaps no educative value.” (Vol. 6, p. 224) "Geology, mineralogy, physical geography, botany, natural history, biology, astronomy––the whole circle of the sciences is, as it were, set with gates ajar in order that a child may go forth furnished, not with scientific knowledge, but with, what Huxley calls, common information, so that he may feel for objects on the earth and in the heavens the sort of proprietary interest which the son of an old house has in its heirlooms." (Vol. 3, p. 79) “The essential mission of school science was to prepare pupils for civilised citizenship by revealing to them something of the beauty and the power of the world in which they lived, as well as introducing them to the methods by which the boundaries of natural knowledge had been extended. School science, therefore, was not intended to prepare for vocations, but to equip pupils for life. It should be part of a general education, unspecialised, in no direct connexion with possible university courses to follow.” (Sir Richard Gregory, quoted by Charlotte Mason in Vol. 6, p. 222) "So much attention is now given to the practical and systematic study of science in schools that the valuable influence of descriptive scientific literature is apt to be overlooked. An intimate knowledge of the simplest fact in nature can be obtained only through personal observation or experiment in the open air or in the laboratory, but broad views of scientific thought and progress are secured best from books in which the methods and results of investigation is stated in language that is simple without being childish. "Books intended to promote interest in science must differ completely from laboratory guides, textbooks, or works of reference. They should aim at exalting the scientific spirit which leads men to devote their lives to the advancement of natural knowledge, and at showing how the human race eventually reaps the benefit of such research. Inspiration rather than information should be the keynote; and the execution should awaken in the reader not only appreciation of the scientific method of study and spirit of self sacrifice, but also a desire to emulate the desires of men whose labors have brought the knowledge of nature to its present position." As a nation, Americans owe billions on outstanding credit cards and the average U.S. household with at least one credit card owes over $15,000 in credit-card debt.  Many Americans are in trouble as they endure harassment from debt collectors, yet only a fraction of people seek aid from a credit counselor. Many people confuse credit-counseling agencies with debt-settlement companies, who are often fraudulent organizations who make promises they can’t keep. Credit counselors advise people on how to make better budget and lifestyle decisions and develop a debt-management plan to pay back their creditors. Many counseling sessions are minimal in cost. Meanwhile, debt-settlement companies offer to negotiate with a person's creditors to reduce the amount of debt they own—and they usually charge a very large fee for their services. These debt-settlement organizations have deterred many people from getting good advice from credit counselors who can be trusted.  The National Foundation for Credit Counseling® (NFCC®), founded in 1951, is the nation’s largest and longest-serving non-profit financial counseling organization. The NFCC’s mission is to promote the national agenda for financially responsible behavior, and build capacity for its members to deliver the highest-quality financial education and counseling services.
