BBC Northern Ireland's Spotlight has spoken to mothers who are struggling to cope with sons whose complex needs can lead to aggressive outbursts – often leaving themselves and other family members injured. The NHS used to supply respite care that would give those families a break of one or two nights per month. But that care has been evaporating in Northern Ireland due to a number of factors – including the loss of facilities and an increasing number of children who have gone into full-time care. Spotlight presenter Tara Mills and Julie Tipping, one of the mums featured in the documentary join Kylie Pentelow.Women working in the adult entertainment industry are being put at risk by banks not allowing them to open accounts or denying them financial services. That's what industry representatives are saying, and why the Financial Conduct Authority recently issued new guidelines for banks around allowing sex workers to access their services. To find out more we hear from Clio Wood, a women's health advocate and co-founder of CensHERship, Jessica Van Meir, co-founder of MintStars and Cindy Gallop, founder and CEO of MakeLoveNotPorn. The language used by healthcare professionals to describe pregnancy loss exacerbates the grief and trauma experienced by some individuals. Words such as incompetent cervix, products of conception, and empty sac to name but a few. That's according to a study published this month by University College London. We hear from Dr Beth Malory, Lecturer in English Linguistics at UCL who led the study.Romalyn Ante is a Filipino-British poet who also works as a nurse in the NHS. She has just released her second poetry collection, Agimat, which looks at how we keep safe that which we hold most dear. Some ways we can come alongside Fostering Hope are: becoming certified as a Foster Parent, Respite Care or babysitter; providing meals and doing laundry for the CWOP kids; Hearts of Hope, The Foster Care Closet, and many more. It was time for the final consultation for my spouse;s stem cell/ bone marrow transplant.   It was in personin Milwaukee requiring us to travel 2 hours for it.   We had it on our calendar for months.  It was the final step prior to Denis getting the cure he needed.    About 2 days prior I wasn't feeling the greatest and I thought it was the nerves. But the fatigue got worse and then came the fever.  I was so frustrated since I was a hand sanitizer, mask wearing, clorox wipe kinda girl.  I avoided crowds and declined guests in our home for 6 months.  I knew what I had to do. Stay isolated in the bedroom and I can't drive in the car with my spouse.   Again, I was so angry and frustrated.  I had to be there but there was no way.  So figured out a back up plan . What is your back up plan if you can't do your caregiver responsibilities?  You can't say - you don't have a plan?   There is no guarantee that you can be there all the time.  Only four in 10 caregivers would rate their health as “excellent or very good,” according to AARP's 2020 Caregiving in the U.S. survey. This is a significant drop from the 48% of caregivers who reported very good health in 2015.This self-reported poor health is backed by medical statistics — 53% of caregivers have been diagnosed with two or more chronic conditions, such as heart disease, kidney disease, or diabetes. That's 14% higher than the general U.S. adult population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These chronic conditions contribute to lower caregiver life expectancy.I was brought to my knees again this past week.    I ended up with a terrible stomach flu where I couldn't be far from the bathroom and my pillow for three days.  I thought I was being so careful with managing my new stressful challenge of Mom now starting hospice care but my take on it is that I am still trying to recover from chronic stress and my body just couldn't fight a virus.  As I laid there trying to recover, I had to give into my thoughts and emotions as well as taking this as a learning lesson.  How could I caregive anyone if I am not taking care of myself first.    I needed the rest and recovery time.  Things will just have to waitWhat changes could I make to reduce illness?Shift your mindsetDo I have a back up plan?  Way too many times, I hear my clients say, there is no one else, It's me.   I just want you to take a hard look at yourself and your situation.     There may be a time where you can't and it may not even be your fault or your choice.  Find your team.  Ask for help. Reach out to a neighbor, friend or family member.  It could be as simple as, watching for a package that your parent is expected to get today.  To someone offers to pick up groceries at the store.  Take them up on it.  Grab the show notes here  ➡️ https://www.cathylvan.com/episode128Join the Caregiver Cup Circle  ❤️ https://www.cathylvan.com/caregivercircleIf you're interested in 1:1 Coaching  ➡️   DM Cathy  @cathylynnvan>>CONNECT WITH CATHY ON INSTAGRAM @cathylynnvan for daily tips and inspirationhttps://instagram.com/cathylynnvan/

ETB 39 -  In this episode I talk with Mary Ann Hughes, mother of 2 young adults with Autism about finding quality care for loved ones with special needs.  As a single mother managing her company, Special Family Transitions, Mary Ann has had to stretch her comfort zone most recently when she sent both of her boys for the very first time to a week long summer camp. Mary Ann believes as special needs moms and parents we don't spend enough time taking care of ourselves.  She notes there is so much stress involved with having special. needs children it can take a toll on the family and sometimes the marriage.  Mary Ann encourages you to take time for yourself so you can be the best parent you can be for your kids.   To help you find quality caregivers you can trust,  Mary Ann shares an abundance of possibilities for securing respite care, some of which you may not have ever considered.   Connect with Mary Ann:Email address: Maryann@specialfamilytransitions.comWebsite: https://www.specialfamilytransitions.com/ Special Family Transitions YouTube channel (please subscribe ) https://youtube.com/channel/UChI4BaUMGf50O2yPE_YnjFASpecial Family Transitions Facebook Page:https://m.facebook.com/specialfamilytransitionsPrivate Facebook group:Divorce Journey Support for Moms of Children with Autism & Special Needs:https://www.facebook.com/groups/309739357366936/Special Family Transitions on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/specialfamilytransitions/Respite Resources:Take Time Texas https://apps.hhs.texas.gov/taketimetexas/search.cfmTexas State Information on Respite Providers or Programshttps://archrespite.org/respite-locator-service-state-information/176-texas-infoConnect with SandyIG: https://www.instagram.com/sandydeppischEmbrace the Blessing Facebook Group: http://bit.ly/ETB4MEWebsite: http://www.embracetheblessing.com/

ETB 38: In this episode I share a few stories about Josiah from the past few years when he was walking through a very long, very difficult season.  With so many challenges including aggression, destruction and self-injurious behaviors it was easy at times to lose sight of hope. As a mom desperately trying to figure out how to best help my child,  it was heartbreaking to watch him struggle so much.  There is nothing like watching someone you love suffer and feel powerless to alleviate it.  Even after all the interventions, it was discouraging to see little to no improvement. But I'm here to tell you, things drastically improved.  Despite the daunting forecast from a psychiatrist who told us Josiah would spend the rest of his life in a long-term psychiatric facility because he was too combative and self-injurious to live at home,  Josiah has become a different person.  He has made remarkable progress and continues to amaze me with his growth and abilities.Don't give up on your kids!  If you are in a difficult season and can't imagine how things could ever get better, hang in there!  Pray without ceasing, reach out to others, seek support from those who has been where you are,  get respite if you need it but don't ever give up hope! Dr. John DeGarmo is an accomplished author, foster parent to over 60+ children throughout his time as a foster parent, and founder of the Foster Care Institute. I am certainly not an expert on the topic of foster care but John is passionate about his mission (he's coming on some podunk podcast in the hopes that maybe he will impact even just one more life!) but I enjoyed our conversation and tried to do my homework so that he could showcase his message on my show. I familiarized myself with some nomenclature that I explain in the monologue at the beginning of the episode such as respite care, CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and so on. It may be helpful for you to check out John's TED X talk before listening to this episode which you can check out in the link below: WATCH HIS TEDX PRESENTATION I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to help John spread his message and if you want to help make the foster care system better in your locale, please reach out to John or someone from his team to point you in the right direction.
