In this week's episode of Real Talk, I have the great pleasure of speaking with fellow personal trainer, Sai Yuan Lee who works here in Singapore at Ultimate Performance. 

Having followed each other on social media for quite some time now and seeing a number of his posts and Instastories which resonated to my own experiences and those of my clients, I was keen to unpack and uncover a little more on Sai's take on the ‘health and fitness' industry. It is interesting to observe that Sai and myself have a similar entrance into the industry having completed our certs and almost instantly realising that we knew absolutely nothing about training people, well, nothing outside of the pages in the text book and that is hardly useful when you have a real life person in front of you. As much as fitness professionals may want to help people, they can often do more harm than good if they are under-experienced, under-qualified and under-certified not to mention over-confident!!! It would be safe to say that myself and Sai have seen the aforementioned characters on gym floor a little too often. What should you be looking for in a personal trainer? Sai and myself discuss but you know what I have noticed? The people who bring the most value to this world are those who never stop learning and never think that they know it all. Those of us who continue to pursue more information or to understand what we are already familiar with on a deeper level can have a far greater influence on our respective audiences and clients than those who have completed their certifications/degree and never pick up the text book ever again. David: "I've always been skinny, so I started training and read a shit-tonne from Charles Poliquin. "I was studying Economics at Uni, got the best grades in everything despite never attending any of my classes as I was busy experimenting in the gym. "What I always wanted was teaching people and helping in some way so getting out of Uni to sit in an office in front of the screen felt very off. So I quit my first job after a few months and came to the UK only for 3 months to complete a personal training course (which would have taken 2 years in Hungary). "That 3 months turned into applying for Ultimate Performance then somehow getting a job without knowing how to fluently string together a sentence in English!" David is now freelance, helping men transform their 'Oh crap I'm 40!" dad bod into lean machines using his 'Dream Body Over 30' Method. How to really deliver on your vision Nathan is Founder and CEO of Ultimate Performance, previous founder and CEO of Inspire, Nathan is president of Malta's largest non-profit organisation the Inspire Foundation, as well as the chair of the Voluntary Organisations Council, and a trustee of Children in Need and supports a wide range of other philanthropic initiatives through his endurance challenges. Nathan co-owns Hellfire Events, the country's toughest endurance race series, He is a lecturer at the University of Malta, the Malta Institute of Management and guest speaker at many educational conferences. Nathan graduated as a physiotherapist from the University of Malta and read an MBA from Strathclyde Graduate School of Business. He has won numerous awards both including Malta Social Entrepreneur of the Year, JCI Humanitarian Leadership, Malta Sports Award, and is a top 10% worldwide age group Ironman Athlete. My Key Takeaways Nathan has pushed himself both physically and mentally for much of his life and in this interview shares his strategies for his success with much clarity. The more I do these interviews, as obvious a point as this may sound, it becomes not just a belief but a fact that our successes are all to do with the mind and heart, not our skills. Our skills are what we gain in order to support this but they are not the driver and the level at which Nathan has succeeded and how he got there definitely highlights this point, although I'd like to add, he clearly has huge skill!   When I ask him what it is he does or tells himself in order to keep going when things are at there toughest, he tells me how his strategies have evolved over time; as he has evolved, so have his strategies. This piece to me was very powerful as it highlights the need for flexibility and self-awareness - if Nathan had have continued without evolving how he does things, perhaps he wouldn't have been so successful. I can definitely relate to this and the way in which I run my deeper structure internally, this has changed hugely. Nathan, throughout our time together talks in intrinsic detail about strategies, how they change, why they change, how that supports us and the awareness of ourselves which we need so as to be as effective as possible.   There's lots of detail within this great interview that organically took the direction of our internal world, rather than our external world. Whilst serving, Glenn was involved in a severe assault, which left him spending the next year in Army Medical Care. Whilst he went on to make an almost full physical recovery, he was left with significant epileptic seizures as a result of his injuries, and was medically discharged from the Armed Forces. During his time in various UK Military Hospitals, Glenn received outstanding medical care and this rehabilitation defined in him the belief that he could go on, despite medical opinion, and still lead a full, active, fit, healthy and strong life. This led Glenn into the world of personal training, where he met Nick Mitchell of Ultimate Performance (UP). Nick guided and recruited Glenn to Ultimate Performance, which is widely regarded as the world’s number one private personal training business. Glenn brings in his military discipline and his personal training expertise to help his clients achieve the transformation they desire.
