It's No Rules November! That one magical time of the year when we break our 1000 views on Letterboxd rule. First up we're diving head first into the shallow end of the Ray Dennis Steckler pool and joining us is returning guest Zack Carlson, who co-wrote the 100-page booklet for the Severin box set. Just like No Rules November, we're also breaking the normal format of our discussion and having it as a much more informal chat about Steckler, though we do spend some time focusing on The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? Recorded on April 15th and April 22nd, 2023. Greetings, fans! That Horror Show Podcast brings you the final episode of their Ray Dennis Steckler retrospective. Show hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig tackle three more films from the wacky outsider filmmaker and they certainly are something else. First up is "The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher'' (1979), a simple tale of love and lust between a psychotic photographer who loves to strangle hookers and a used book-store owner who slashes the throats of drunken bums! Then, the boys talk about "The Las Vegas Serial Killer'' (1986), a quasi-sequel - or maybe a remake, or perhaps some soft-reboot made before there was a thing called a "reboot"? - to the previous film in which our intrepid photographer-strangler is back in action while the story cuts back and forth between two non-descript muggers that might play into the story...or maybe not?!?! And finally, the hosts review Steckler's last film "One More Time" (2009), which is an attempt at an existential follow up to "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!?" and...well, it's something! Also on board is Nate's 'Kids Corner' in which he'll be talking about "Prey" (2022), the recent addition in the "Predator" franchise.
This week I'm talking with writer, producer and composer Brian Steckler in CA. Brian has made a successful career for himself producing albums, composing for sync and library production music with NBC, CBS, Netflix and more. Brian has won a Clio award for helping create the audio and star in one of the most famous Super Bowl ads of all time as a certain frog who liked to say “er!” We are discussing working for a jingle company and creating world famous ads, writing production library music used on countless shows, finding your niche to work in a field of music that only you can provide and how you need to decide what success looks like for you. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we discuss: *Working for Hummingbird Productions in Nashville. *What a jingle company does. *Creating the voices of the Budweiser Frogs commercial soundtrack. *The difference in studio budgets from the 1980s and today. *Working in sync music. *Writing library production music. *Writing to briefs on a deadline. *Writing for a children's preschool curriculum program. *Making the right connections. *Having a breadth of knowledge to do many things. *Writing custom cues for Netflix. *Putting favorite sounds into a template for speed. *Align yourself with people who are good at things you aren't. *It's a long term numbers game. *Send it, forget it. *Tear tracks apart to learn how to create them. *Making your first instinct sound good. *https://www.briansteckler.com/ *@briansteckler on IG. BIO: I have made a career of creating music in a wide variety of forms and genres. The scope of my experience includes collaborations with directors, editors, and ad agencies for commercial musical purposes as well as working with individual artists, and bands to create and hone unique musical styles. This range of experience has given me a broad musical basis to draw from. I enjoy learning what people want and need musically, and then bringing even more than they expect to both the process and the result. After receiving my BFA (piano performance) from Western Michigan University in 1993, I moved to Nashville and began my career at Hummingbird Productions, one of the leading jingle houses on Music Row at the time. It was there I co-produced the audio and lent my voice to one of the most recognized, Clio-winning Super Bowl commercials of all time: Budweiser “Frogs.” I wrote and produced national, regional, and local spots during my years at Hummingbird and it was there that I learned how to deliver great sounding audio on very tight deadlines. I moved to Los Angeles in 1997 in order to pursue songwriting and production and began working with artists and bands crafting songs, producing tracks, and mixing my own work, as well as other producer's songs. I wrote songs for Sony ATV Music Publishing, including co-writing with Billy Porter, Gary Barlow (Take That), Paul Stanley (KISS), 2Gether (an MTV boy band spoof series), and many others. With artist Angela Via, I co-wrote and produced a song that landed in Pokemon: The Movie and on the multi-platinum selling soundtrack album. It was also during this time I had my first taste of film scoring, working closely with Keith Forsey (Billy Idol's long-time record producer) to create the score for Wisegirls, a film starring Mira Sorvino and Mariah Carey. As the record industry underwent significant changes during the Napster era, my wife and I chose to move our young family to Northern California. While maintaining my relationships in LA, I was able to work with independent artists and bands, as well as grow my skills and experience scoring, working for Universal Pictures on trailers and promos, as well as regularly placing cues in TV shows. Recently, I've written the score for the Netflix series The Day I Met El Chapo, provided the bulk of the music, including the Main Title theme for a number of other series: Hunted (CBS), S.T.R.O.N.G. (NBC), Ultimate Beastmaster, Awake, Cooked with Cannabis (Netflix). I also had the opportunity to score the award winning documentary Hand Rolled: A Film About Cigars, as well as Sun, Soil & Water, which is currently being screened at a number of film festivals. My wife and I live in Granite Bay, CA which is situated between Folsom and Roseville, about 30 minutes from downtown Sacramento, and 90 minutes from Lake Tahoe. Living somewhere beautiful, outside the “rat race,” certainly helps my creative flow. I work in my well sound-proofed custom recording studio called “The Stickhouse,” which is an ideal place for creating and mixing music. My studio is built around the Slate Digital VRS8 system, running Pro Tools Ultimate and Logic Pro, depending on the functionality I need for each project. I have a substantial library of Virtual Instruments and samples which cover any genre, from orchestral to hip-hop.

It is remarkable how one can demonstrate the love of Jesus through an ordinary business or practice. Christians were not meant to shelve their faith when they go to work. Learn how Partner Jeff Steckler unashamedly builds up his employees, even those of different faiths, through example and grace. Originally Recorded on March 11th, 12th, and 25th, 2023 Greetings and salutations, fans! That Horror Show Podcast presents Part Deux of our Ray Dennis Steckler retrospective! Tune in as hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig tackles Steckler's next productions, which feature enough behind the camera professionalism to capture the personal "home movie" horror film aesthetic. First up, Tim and Chris review "The Lemon Grove Kids Meet the Monsters" (1967-1969), a three-part short film series mash-up in which Steckler imitates the 'Bowery Boys' with his friends and family in 'The Lemon Grove Kids', 'The Lemon Grove Kids Meet the Green Grasshopper and the Vampire Lady from Outer Space' (phew...what a title!) and 'The Lemon Grove Kids...Go Hollywood!' And then, once when the 1970s began everything would change for Ray with his production of "The Chooper" (1971, aka "Blood Shack"), which shows you need a lot more than just the hot Nevada desert locale and a decrepit house complete with a soiled mattress to make a horror movie! But wait, that's not all: Chris goes solo to review a couple of Steckler's later triple-X rated horror titles (so Tim doesn't have to!) of the likes such as "The Mad Love Life of a Hot Vampire", "Count Al-Kum" (oh, how witty, Ray!), "The Sexorcist Devil" and "Red Heat" (and yes, these reviews of Steckler's hardcore titles are NSFW, kids!). And we also have yet another Kids Corner review with Nate in which he talks about "M3GAN" (2022) with special guest Gabi.
In the fifth episode of mini-series 'Experiments that changed fire science' we cover the compartment fire experimental campaigns carried at NBS (now NIST) in 1970's and 1980's, with the maybe most famous of them all - the Steckler's room experiment. My guest - prof. James Quintiere touches on the experimental design, design choices and most importantly - the technology available to measure and how they made it work.If you would like to read more on this science, start up with these piecesStecklers room experiment paperCorridor firesWall fires and upward flame spread
Recorded on Saturday January 14th, Sunday January 15th and Sunday February 5th, 2023. Welcome to 2023, fans! That Horror SHow Podcast begins this brand new year with yet another retrospective, this time on a particular filmmaker who dabbled with the horror genre in his own unique ways: Ray Dennis Steckler! Regulated to near obscurity due to being a filmmaker that hinged outside of the "mainstream", Steckler's work is still ripe for rediscovery and re-evaluation, so your lovely hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig have decided to take the plunge into his works. First up is the film that most cult movie fans know of just by its title alone: "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies !!?" (1963), a movie that has gone down in history thanks to (or no thanks to) the Golden Turkey Awards as 'The Worst Film Ever Made', a claim that the hosts are willing to challenge. Second up is what some Steckler fans consider his minimalist masterpiece "The Thrill Killers" (1965), a weird combo of trapped-in-Hollywood-rat-race film noir meets psychopathic murderers on a bloody rampage in the tradition of "Psycho"! And third is not a horror movie but the jewel-in-the-crown of Steckler's form of improvised cinema "Rat Pfink a Boo Boo" (1966), which begins as a movie featuring three thugs involved in a kidnapping and ends as a...oh, comon', you just gotta listen to find out!!! Also on hand is Nate's 'Kids Corner' and gives his take on none other than the Season 4 finale of 'Stranger Things'!

We have officially reached trend status, y'all. For this episode, we were joined by our friend Jessica Goodman, the author of “They Wish They Were Us,” who has a twisty, page-turning new novel out this week called “They'll Never Catch Us.” Like her fantastic first book, it's a Y.A. thriller about murder, gossip, the terror-scape that is the high school lunchroom, and competitive young women with ambitions too big for the boxes they're expected to fit into. The book's primary narrators are Stella and Ella Steckler, two sisters who are competing for the top spot on their competitive cross-country team at a high school in the Catskills — as well as athletic scholarships that could be their ticket out of town. Stella's college hopes have already been shaken by a murky scandal from the previous season, and she's more determined than ever to catch the eye of recruiters. When Mila Keene, a star runner from Connecticut, moves to town and begins to compete with them for dominance on the team, the girls are rattled but also drawn to Mila's warm personality and competitive spark. Then Mila goes missing, and suspicion quickly turns to the two sisters who had most to gain from her absence in competitions. Did one of the Steckler sisters take out their competition? And if not, what happened? In this chat, we talked about the intense pressure placed on elite female athletes, who are asked to be explosively competitive on the field while always maintaining a polite, ladylike facade; the complexity of the bond between sisters; the gentrification of the Catskills; and so much more. OncoPTs are connectors - we help connect patients with other healthcare pros, services, & care. But we can't do everything. So hallelujah we have foundations like the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation to help patients get needed wigs, compression garments, post-mastectomy care, & more. I spoke with Tina Fernandez Steckler about how HERS helps patients in the San Francisco bay area, plus she shares how to find these resources in our own backyard!
Sometimes, rock and roll dreams can get waylaid, subdued, or even killed by the signing of the line which is dotted. This episode would take 1,000 hours if we only include black artists from the '40s, '50s, and '60s. And '70s, '80s, and '90s. And '00s and '10s. So I just focused on the easy-hanging fruit that is the people who ALSO profited from the hard work of black musicians to make their palatable caucasian crafting. Adam VIII John Lennon "Roots" Commercial (1975) What a shitty, washed-out picture. This gives you the idea that Morris Levy just wanted to fuck with Lennon to pay him back for his hubris. Devout (at the time) fans of Lennon like me were perplexed when the last track on "Walls And Bridges" was a strangely shoddy cover of "Ya Ya" with Julian Lennon on drums. Little did we know that that was John Lennon "fulfilling a legal obligation". Just like a junkie would. I don't think anyone would think of Morris Levy as anything but a very sleazy anti-art leech, but that little joke was probably the last straw. "What the fuck is this washed-up hippy doing, and does he know what I can do to him?" Did this whole thing sour Lennon on recording more music, and did he sense his own waning desire to compete with McCartney and use this whole sorry escapade as a good excuse to spend some time in Japan? Lennon was as dishonest and immature as he was gifted, and we will never know for sure. The insert. Almost as insulting as "The Wedding Album". Marvin Gaye - Where Are We Going? (1972) I talk to you like you know at least something about popular music. If you don't, let me be the first to tell you that Marvin Gaye recorded an album AFTER "What's Going On" and BEFORE "Let's Get It On". "You're The Man" was intended as another socially conscious record like "What's Going On" (1971), but following the release of its lead single, the title track "You're The Man", [ed: and the lack of positive reaction to same] Gaye canceled its release. [ed: I like this record a lot.] This was in part due to the reception of the song, as well as the fact that Gaye's political views were different from those of Motown founder Berry Gordy. For these reasons, "You're The Man" was long considered a lost album. Marvin Gaye - You're The Man (Pts. I&II) (1972) Marvin Gaye - The World Is Rated X (1972) Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music (1975) Like The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, etc., some artists tend to benefit from revisionist history. No, "Metal Machine Music" is not a deep, thoughtful cry for help from a misunderstood genius. This was nothing but a big "fuck you" to RCA, which is sad to me because there were so many more talented, interesting, and profound artists than Lou Reed, struggling for royalties, swimming against the tide of record comp.....wait. Maybe he had a point. ...but it's STILL not as bad as "Having Fun On Stage With Elvis". Badfinger - Apple Of My Eye (1973) Lookie here. Badfinger - Get Away (1973) So you all know the struggles that Badfinger enjoyed with Stan Polley, who once managed one of my favorite singers, Lou Christie. But Badfinger also suffered under the weight of the lethargic promotion afforded them by The Beatles and Apple Records. This was THEIR Contractual Obligation album, and it's not bad at all. Guys that talented could never turn in a clunker. From Loudersound: (In 1973) Apple was in disarray, but Badfinger – by far the label’s most successful artists after The Beatles – had further cause for complaint. Their original contract, drawn up in the days when Apple was living up to its fair-minded (i.e. hippy) ideals, offered a generous artist royalty of 5 percent, with Apple also paying for all recording and promotion expenses. Now, with legendary US tough guy Allen Klein running the company, the band were being asked to not only take a reduced royalty rate but also to pay recording costs. George Harrison, for one, was devastated at the loss from the label of a group he held dear, and allegedly (and uncharacteristically) confronted Bill Collins [ed: their manager since 1966) and said: “You guys fucked us after we did all that work for you.” Collins retorted that they had been unable to speak to their former champion directly (an accusation that rings true with all the superstar retinue surrounding the former Beatle), let alone with the formidable Klein. In retrospect, Badfinger’s departure marked the beginning of the end of Apple as anything other than a ‘vanity’ label for John, Paul, George, and Ringo. But the inevitable payback was Apple issuing Ass (as the 1973 album ended up being rather unflatteringly called) as a spoiler three months ahead of the band’s debut for their new label. As it transpired, Ass would be the final non-Beatles album to appear on Apple (it reached No. 122 in the US). One track, Pete Ham’s Apple Of My Eye, was a genuinely fond farewell to their former paymasters, and he contributed only one other; much of the music was written by Joey Molland, which gave it a different feel. Al Steckler, the man who had given Badfinger ‘their’ gold disc in New York City, was later incredibly revealing to Stefan Granados, author of the invaluable Apple history Those Were The Days (Cherry Red Books) when he outlined the contract Badfinger signed with Warner Brothers. A band at the peak of their powers, with a track record of US success and the Beatles’ imprimatur, might have thought their next record deal would set them up for life. Not so. The advance, which looked good on paper, was $2 million for, Steckler told Granados: “something like six albums. After they signed, Bill Collins and Pete Ham told me what the advance was and I figured it out for them. When you deducted the cost of the albums they had to pay for, deducted Polley’s cut, and split the money between Collins and the four guys in the group, it came out to nothing… $60,000 apiece per album. They’d really thought they were millionaires. They looked at each other and realized that I was right and that it was too late to do anything about it. Peter had this horrible look on his face… it was the last time I saw him.” Badfinger - Timeless (1973) Bonzo Dog Band - King of Scurf (1971) Neil Innes wrote music for Monty Python and starred in "All You Need is Cash" with Eric idle. He was brilliant and he wrote songs that you know but don't know that it was him. I never liked this group, but as I mentioned in my show, they were in Magical Mystery Tour. These songs were recorded in 1971, a few years after they broke up. But the United Artists label pointed the Fickle Finger of Fate at the boys, and we have this. Bonzo Dog Band - The Strain (1971) Bonzo Dog Band - Bad Blood (1971) ELP - Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman (1978) The Mamas and the Papas - Blueberries For Breakfast (1971) Like the Bonzos, they were gently reminded by the bean-counters at Dunhill that there was some unfinished business. So they created this. Again, not that bad! The Mamas and the Papas - Lady Genevieve (1971) For a drug-addled, amoral daughter-fucker, John Phillips sure wrote a lot of songs about his wife. The Mamas and the Papas - Pacific Coast Highway (1971) The Mamas and the Papas - People Like Us (1971)

More and more families are coming together to live under the same roof, bringing not only their moving truck filled with living room sofas and dining room chairs, but they are showing up in relationships with their respective sons and daughters. Where does everyone fit under the one roof? Who is allowed to discipline? Can a stepfather step in? What do the kids feel? Should we give more room and accept as parents and step parents that children now add a new dimension that needs to be understood and respected? Greg Steckler, a Los Angeles Marriage and Family Therapist discusses these issues that are very relevant in today's world of contemporary relationships.

So how does one approach a Batman spoof that wasn't intended to be one? John and Robert are sitting in the Batcave and watching the infamous Ray Dennis Steckler film, Rat Pfink A Boo Boo. In it, our hero's girlfriend is being menaced in the first 45 minutes of the film. Based on the setup, one would think that our hero would turn detective to try and stop it, but when she's kidnapped at the halfway point, he and the gardener in his girlfriend's building enter a closet and come out as the masked avengers - Rat Pfink and Boo Boo. John and Robert Long are watching their Bat-Monitors and are cringing at the turn of the events for this film as well as the costumes our heroes wear, while marveling at some of the directing choices and laughing at some genuinely funny lines. It all adds up to a movie that leaves you scratching your head and wondering what it was you just watched. Take a listen and let us know what you think by commenting here or writing us at thebatcavepodcast@gmail.com. Robert Long is a full time graphic designer and independent filmmaker. As a first generation Batman syndication kid, he manages the 1966-68 Batman Television Series Group on Facebook. He has had the pleasure to meet and work with Adam West and Julie Newmar with various projects in the past. Grace Steckler is literally a saving grace to hundreds of pet owners in Washington, DC. Founded in 2000, Saving Grace Pet Care has grown to be a thriving business with 25 employees and three franchises. In addition to Grace turning her business into one of the most successful pet care companies in Washington, DC, she has also owned a cleaning company and a handyman service. Being an entrepreneur has brought about many challenges, some great accomplishments, and a great sense of personal satisfaction for Grace. It has also allowed her to remain a stay at home mom to her three children, to travel, and to have a freedom that would be difficult to attain otherwise. Grace has taken a very interesting path in life with several twists and turns. She has combined many different life experiences from living as a nun, to teaching high school science, to traveling abroad, to running her own pet care business. She took lessons she learned from each of these experiences to create a highly successful business. Her teaching background has allowed her to easily keep her furry clients and team on task while others often struggle to stay calm and in control. Her love of travel, new languages, and cultures keeps her motivated to put lots of systems and processes in place to keep her business running efficiently without her. It’s broken down to a science at this point - no pun intended. In this episode Britt and Grace go into great detail on what it was like for Grace to franchise her business. Saving Grace Pet Care’s key to success is focusing on caring for it’s large team of 25 employees. This includes making sure they all have a healthy work life balance, are compensated very well, and are allowed to thrive on their own terms while still working effectively within the team and the franchise. The name of the game is “Win-Win”. Grace wants each of her employees to feel empowered and part of a larger mission, which has allowed her to keep many team players around for many years. Grace believes that the happier your team is the smoother your business runs. She shows her appreciation in many different ways. For example, randomly during the cold winter months she’ll email each of her team members a Starbucks gift card with a note thanking them for all their hard work. Franchising is something only a few brave souls ever tackle during their business endeavors. Grace goes into great detail on the pros and cons of franchising, what your business goals need to be in order for the cost of franchising to be worth the investment, and how she targets areas to open new franchises. For Grace, her franchising journey started with a few google inquires, several interviews with many franchise lawyers, and then a lot of pain staking paperwork that took a year to get in order. In the end it was all worth it. She felt that empowering her team not as managers, but as business owners with the most mutually beneficial outcome for both her and each individual business owner. Franchising was the perfect blend of business, teaching, and freedom for the Saving Grace team. In this episode you’ll learn: - How Grace went from a 12 year career as a nun teaching high schoolers to becoming a business owner - How she carried over skills from previous career as a teacher to her pet care business - How to clearly communicate the job’s ins and outs to new hires and what that teaching process looks like - How allowing her managers to work remotely has caused them to feel empowered and stay with the company long term. - How implementing a win-win strategy in her company has created long term happy employees - How to go from a single business to a franchise - How to find help with hiring through Jazz HR. - How to know if franchising is a good fit for you - How changing locations can keep you from burning out. - How she integrates her business into her family life which allows her job to feel less like work and more like life.

He later began working as a technician at a Saturn dealership in Reading, PA where he quickly attained Master Technician status. He later transitioned to working with Hondas where he aggressively worked to attain another Mater Technician status. Always having a passion for a full understanding of system/component functionality, he rapidly earned a reputation for deciphering strange failures at an efficient pace and became known as an information specialist amongst the staff and peers at the dealership. In search of new challenges, he once again transitioned away from the dealership and to the independent world, where he specializes in diagnostics and drivability. Today, he is a working technician at a large facility near the NE side of Philadelphia, PA. Along with beta testing for Automotive Test Solutions, he writes for MotorAGE Magazine, teaches for CARQUEST Technical Institute as well as WORLDPAC, INC. and develops curriculum/submits case studies for other training companies. Brandon contributes weekly to Facebook Automotive Chat groups and truly enjoys helping others to attain a level of understanding that will serve them well throughout their careers. A brief review of Ray Dennis "Wolfgang Schmidt" Steckler's 1979 sleazefest that begs the question, is this a movie or ickiness that collected on celluloid while no one was looking. The title says it all: a sicko posing as a shutterbug strangles nudie cutie models in Hollywood while a sullen, greasy bookstore cashier murders winos in alleys.

Leaving the fictional Las Vegas and turning our sights onto a director who would spend his later years in Las Vegas, this episode features a discussion of Ray Dennis Steckler's 1969 film Body Fever. Body Fever features Steckler regulars Carolyn Brandt, Ron Haydock, Herb Robins and Gary Kent as well as behind the scenes work from Keith Wester and Jack Cooperman. As someone who recognizes that Steckler's work is still relatively unknown, Terry often finds himself drifting off to other films in Steckler's career and some of the great stories behind them. It is safe to say that many topics here will be revisited in future episodes of the podcast. In an effort to briefly discuss the cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond and Laszlo Kovacs, Terry incorrectly credited the cinematography in The Last Picture Show to Mr. Kovacs when it was actually Robert Surtees. Laszlo Kovacs did work in many other pictures including Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The King of Marvin Gardens, Ghostbusters and Say Anything. We apologize for the incorrect credit.
