Good interviewing skills are crucial, but it's more important to have a top-notch pool of prospects. I want you to think about your current recruiting strategy. How much of it relies on lucking out and having the right person see your posting at the right time? Are you actively recruiting for top talent or passively waiting for a needle in a haystack? Making a great hire is impossible if you don't have anyone good to choose from. This is why 90% of the hiring problem is fundamentally "Top of Funnel". You can practice your interviewing skills all you want (and we will go over this in the next episode), but if you don't have a great pool of candidates to interview, where does that leave you? We've all at some point felt the frustration of posting an open position on a job board only to find that a few days later, only a few completely unqualified people have applied. This 'hope and pray' strategy has led many lesser entrepreneurs to all but abandon the search entirely, comforting themselves with stories and excuses that often blame lazy millennials, COVID, or government policy. But that's not you. As an evolved contractor, you know the promotion of your job ads and your employer brand is the missing link in this all-important chain. We're excited to have Asad Zaman on the show to speak in-depth on active tactics and promotional recruiting. Asad is the CEO of Sales Talent Agency, an international recruiting agency that has helped acquire talent for over 1,500 companies - some of them you may know: Harley Davidson, SAP, IBM, Salesforce, and Sonos, to name a few. Toronto Board of Trade named Asad Toronto's Young Professional of the Year for 2019, and you'll see why in this episode. This guy is seriously dialled. There is a good reason why we chose to bring someone from outside the trades and construction space in for this topic - because the level of sophistication in recruitment, employer brand, and all things hiring - is much more evolved in other industries like tech, where he plays. There is a ton that we learned from today's conversation. In today's episode, we explore: - The three talent pools available to any entrepreneur and why most of us just barely tap into one - The way to think with "strategic empathy" and how placing yourself in the shoes of a candidate will lead to way better results - Some specific ways you as an employer can stand out in a highly competitive market - The best way to make a compelling offer to your target candidate - The (incorrect) common belief systems that hold most contractors back - How to integrate a talent acquisition mindset into your company culture Watch the episode on PCA Overdrive PCA Overdrive is free for members. Fan of the show? https://www.patreon.com/newleftradio (Support us on Patreon)! What does freedom look like? Is it the stuff of mask mandates and vaccine passports or the yearning to self-direct the destiny of a people? Can we say that policing is democratic? How do we effect real change in our world? Former Toronto City Councillor and NDP MP, and current Executive Director of the Institute for Change Leaders, Olivia Chow joins us to discuss. About Olivia Chow For over thirty years, Olivia Chow has been an effective and well-known public figure, serving in Toronto's municipal politics and on the national stage as a Canadian Member of Parliament. She was voted Best City Councillor seven times by readers of NOW magazine and Best MP in 2010. Readers of the Toronto Sun voted her Top Torontonian in 2012 and Canadian Immigrant magazine named her as one of Canada's Top 25 Immigrants. Olivia also wrote the best selling memoir “My Journey”, published in 2014. In 2015, Olivia Chow joined X University as a Distinguished Visiting Professor. Her work focuses on community engagement and leadership development. As a founder of the Institute for Change Leaders, Olivia and her team of 30+ trainers have taught community and political organizing to thousands of organizers since March of 2015.  Olivia's career has been all about creating lasting change. Olivia was born in Hong Kong and moved to Toronto with her parents when she was thirteen. She studied Philosophy and Fine Art at university and has worked as a college professor, an ESL teacher, a counsellor for new immigrants, and a sculptor. She became an activist as a young woman, fighting for the rights of refugees and immigrants. For over 20 years, she was at the forefront of the ultimately successful campaign to achieve a national apology and redress for the discriminatory “Chinese Head Tax”. Olivia won her first election in 1985 and served on the Toronto Board of Education for six years. In 1991, Olivia became the first Asian-born woman elected as a Metro Toronto Councillor. She was re-elected to the city council five times, serving with distinction for 14 years. While at City Hall, she served as Chair of the Community Services Committee and Vice-Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), among other senior responsibilities. Throughout her career, Olivia has been at the forefront, working for progress for all. She has reached across party lines and travelled across the country, forging alliances with municipal and provincial leaders, business and advocacy groups. Olivia married Jack Layton in 1988, and together they forged one of Canada's most remarkable political partnerships, sharing a passion for life and a commitment to change. Jack became the leader of the New Democratic Party and Canada's Leader of the Opposition in Parliament before he died of cancer in 2011. Since his passing, Olivia has continued the quest to make Toronto a better city and Canada a better country for all.  https://twitter.com/oliviachow (Follow Olivia Chow on Twitter) About the Institute for Change Leaders The Institute advances education by developing and delivering courses to the public that teach participants the tools, principles, ethics and values of participatory democracy in order to acquire knowledge and skills to be involved, and leaders, in democratic processes. Founded in 2016 by Olivia Chow, the Institute for Change Leaders (ICL) teaches the skills that organizers need to win social change. ICL believes students learn best when they practice what they learn, and are constantly engaged in small group learning. They deliver a full curriculum in regular sessions online and at X University, and work with organizations to deliver tailored trainings in their workplaces. ICL's mission is to ensure organizers are continually developing the skills they need to transform the resources they have into the change they want. The Institute does this by teaching organizing strategies

SEGMENT 2: WHY IS TORONTO PRIORITIZING HOMELESS OVER ADULTS OVER 80 IN VACCINE ROLLOUT Back in February, we learned that Ontario residents over 80 would be the next priority group to be vaccinated. But now we're learning that Toronto will be vaccinating the homeless first. We ask Councillor Cressy why our vulnerable residents over 80, who are most at risk of death from COVID-19, would be pushed to the back of the vaccine line? He's already told us that this was the province's decision to make! But, is that really what went down? Julie Eng, Daniel Zuckerbot and David Peck talk about their new film The Science of Magic, change blindness, assumptions, subverting reality, free will, doubt and the problems of perception. Synopsis Magic has become the latest investigative tool for scientists exploring human cognition, neurobiology, and behaviour. Across Canada, the US and Europe, our film follows researchers who are bringing magicians’ tricks into the laboratory.  With impossible magic, amazing facts, and opportunities for viewers to participate in the magic, this extraordinary exploration peeks behind the curtain into a fascinating world where ancient magic meets modern science.  Canadian magician and executive director of the arts organization Magicana, Julie Eng not only mystifies us with magic, she also takes us to Montreal’s McGill University to meet Jay Olson. He is one of the scientists spearheading this novel and powerful approach to experimental psychology.  On the streets of Montreal Julie and Jay use card tricks to help us understand how magic can be used to explore human consciousness. But these simple tricks have given way to more elaborate experiments. We join Jay at the Montreal Neurological Institute for an extraordinary demonstration involving an MRI machine that can apparently not only read minds but can even use its electromagnetic fields to manipulate your most private thoughts.  Watch the trailer here. Biography Julie Eng is best described as a charming and enchanting performer who is passionate about her craft. Both her peers and her clients consider this award-winning magicienne one of the up-and-coming performers of her generation. Her interest in magic began early; raised in a family of magicians, she has been a stage performer since she was a child. As she earned her Commerce degree, Julie’s true love for the unique art of magic blossomed into a career. And now, for over three decades, Julie has brought her magical expertise to thousands of private functions, festivals, conventions and special events around the globe. Julie is also the executive director of Magicana – an arts organization and registered charity dedicated to the study, exploration and advancement of magic as a performing art. Inside of her work with Magicana, Julie is one of the founding organizers for two unique community outreach programs, My Magic Hands and Senior Sorcery. Julie was also a part of another one of Magicana’s productions, a theatrical show, Piff Paff Poof which was designed specifically to introduce the experience of the theatre to young families.   Over the years, Julie has developed a refreshing and distinctive style – a mix of elegance, surprise and humour – that has made her a popular entertainment choice. Whether on stage or mingling with her audience, Julie’s magic is distinguished by her dexterous skill, confident presentation and professional manner. Julie has also received accolades from her fellow magicians, who have invited her to perform at magic conventions across North America. She has been featured in, MAGIC, Genii and The Linking Ring, internationally distributed trade magazine. Julie’s energetic performances are well suited to a multitude of venues: corporate receptions, trade shows and product launches, hospitality suites, conventions and client appreciation and development events. Julie’s style, charm and repertoire have consistently garnered high praise from her clients, including some of the largest and most creative companies in Canada and the United States. Clara Brett Martin becomes “student-at-law” with Toronto law firm. Clara Brett Martin was born in Toronto in 1874, the youngest of 12 children. Along with her siblings, Martin was schooled at home before graduating with high honours from Trinity College with a major in mathematics at the age of 16. After a year of teaching, Martin petitioned the Law Society of Upper Canada to become a law student, only to be rejected. But after her issue went to the Ontario legislature and then back to the Law Society, Martin became a student-at-law on June 26, 1893. She began her articles with the Toronto law firm of Mulock, Miller, Crowther and Montgomery and then switched to Blake, Lash, Cassels. She experienced all the difficulties one could imagine, including hissing, verbal threats and having to sit separately from other students. However, amidst a drop-out rate of close to 70 per cent, Martin not only completed her studies, but came in first place. She met further legal hurdles in her quest to become a barrister until former Premier Oliver Mowat and others intervened. When Martin was called to the bar as a barrister on February 2, 1897, she became the first woman lawyer in the British Empire. Years later she opened her own firm, hiring women law students along the way. Knowing the importance of educating women, she also served on the Toronto Board of Education for 10 years,. In 1989, a new office of the attorney general of Ontario was named the Clara Brett Martin Building. However, research revealed a letter from 1915 in which Martin made an anti-Semitic reference, and shortly thereafter, her name was removed from the building. Martin died in 1923 at the age of 49.
