David Marquet: Leadership is Language David Marquet is the former commander of the U.S.S. Santa Fe, a nuclear-powered attack submarine. Under David's command, the ship had an impressive turnaround, achieving the highest retention and operational standings in the Navy. David is the author of the bestseller Turn the Ship Around: A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders* and his newer book, Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say and What You Don't*. In this rebroadcast, David and I explored the seven sins of questioning. David shared the story of the ill-fated El Faro and how we can discover better information in leadership by making the shift from self-affirming to self-educating. Seven Ways to Ask Better Questions Instead of questions stacking, try one and done. Instead of a teaching moment, try and learning moment. Instead of a dirty question, try a clear question. Instead of a binary question, start the question with “what” or “how.” Instead of a “why” question, try “tell me more.” Instead of a self-affirming question, try self-educating questions. Instead of jumping to the future, start with the present, past, then future. Send us a Text Message. In this episode, Peter and Dave explore the complexities of accountability and leadership in organizations. They delve into how systems can often constrain agency and foster "learned helplessness," even when leaders claim to have an open-door policy. The conversation touches on the importance of empathetic listening, inclusive language, and creating environments that empower teams to make decisions closer to the issues they face. This week´s takeaways: Organizational systems are often designed to produce repetitive, constrained behavior, making it difficult for individuals to break out of engrained patterns, even when change is needed.True accountability requires not just assigning responsibility, but providing the authority, support and incentives for people to exercise that accountability.Leaders must be intentional about using inclusive language that creates psychological safety and invites open dialogue, rather than language that shuts down discourse.Resources:The Unaccountability Machine by Dan Davis- https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/211161687-the-unaccountability-machineLeadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say -- and What You Don't by David Marquet - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42774083-leadership-is-language?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_39 We love to hear your feedback! Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In his Dictionary of the English Language, first published in 1755, Samuel Johnson did not define the words Saxon, Angle, or Anglo-Saxon. But Noah Webster in his 1828 American Dictionary defines Anglo-Saxon as "adjective. Pertaining to the Saxons, who settled in England, or English Saxons." Something had happened in between the two, and not just the American Revolution, and Johnson's and Webster's different views of that event–but that probably did contribute to the difference. And when Webster published his definition, the term was already taking on new connotations. Indeed, the term Anglo-Saxon has a rich and complicated history, right to the present moment. And so does perception of the peoples to which it refers…or does it actually refer to them? With me to discuss the history of the definition and the ideology of the term is Rory Naismith, Professor of Early Medieval English History at the University of Cambridge, Fellow of Corpus Christi College. Author of numerous books, including Citadel of the Saxons: The Rise of Early London, he was last on the podcast talking about medieval money in Episode 328. In this final episode of the third season of What You Say in English, I had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with Laura Patsko, a language and communication specialist with a focus on English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). We delved into complex concepts such as Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Inclusive Education. Laura's insights into these topics were enlightening, and it was fascinating to explore their implications in the English Language Teaching (ELT) industry. We discussed the importance of inclusivity in lesson planning, the role of identity in language learning, and the impact of the Sustainable Development Goals on the ELT world. Laura's expertise and passion for these subjects were evident throughout our conversation, and I found myself learning so much from her. This episode is a treasure trove of information for anyone interested in language, communication, and the evolving role of English in the world. It's an educational and insightful conversation that I believe you won't want to miss. Remember to check out the episode description for links to further reading on the topics we discussed. This is the last episode of this third season of What You Say in English. I'll be taking a break for the month of August, but I'll keep active on TikTok. In this episode of What You Say in English, I had the pleasure of hosting Rachel Tsateri, an inspiring figure in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). We delved into various aspects of Rachel's work, including her passion for teaching pronunciation for listening purposes and her insights on teacher and trainer talk. We also touched on the topic of nativespeakerism, a subject very dear to me and one that Rachel, along with other figures in the field, has been actively challenging. This episode was a journey of insights and reflections, and I hope it provides listeners with valuable perspectives to consider in their own practice of teaching English. In this episode of "What You Say in English," I explore the fascinating world of plurilingualism and its impact on language assessment. I delve into the definition of plurilingualism, its growing recognition in language learning, and how it challenges the traditional monolingual approach. Throughout the episode, I discuss how language testing bodies like Cambridge Assessment English are incorporating plurilingualism into their assessments. We explore innovative approaches such as cross-linguistic mediation and bilingual assessments that aim to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of individuals' linguistic repertoires. I also address the challenges involved, particularly in enhancing teacher assessment literacy and addressing concerns about fairness and feasibility. By raising awareness and sharing best practices, we can foster a more inclusive approach to assessing plurilingual abilities. Join me as we navigate this evolving landscape and uncover the opportunities and challenges that plurilingualism brings to language assessment. The Book Leads – Episode 42: Alla Weinberg & A Culture of Safety: Building A Work Environment Where People Can Think, Collaborate And Innovate COVID-19 has shown us what kind of gap exists between what people want and need in the workplace and what the reality is they actually get. Compounding the workplace impact of the pandemic is the growing fear of a impending recession which is leading to preemptive steps by companies to streamline their operations by making cuts – tens of thousands of layoffs across major companies and throughout the country. What lessons have companies learned from previous recessions, if any, in how quickly they make those on their rosters expendable? The same can be asked from the shock to the economy caused by the pandemic. Disrespect, neglect, and toxicity on the part of and allowed in many companies is leading to a ripple effect of mental health issues, fear, and uncertainty through their ranks, from the top to the bottom. In this episode, Alla shares with me what it means to care for others in the work environment. Common courtesy, respect, and compassion – basic humanity – is free and effective. And aside from it being the right thing to do, an argument can be made that creating such an environment of safety, which Alla covers in her book, leads to innovative work and lasting results. Everyone wins. Everyone benefits. Some highlights from this episode: What if all the boxes society lays out for you are checked but you're not fulfilled? As humans, fear is what we're feeling most of the time. That's just how we're wired. Episode 17 of "What You Say in English" explores the topic of silent letters in English. The episode explains that silent letters in English are a way of preserving the history of the language and are often relics of the pronunciation of words in their original languages. The episode also discusses why silent letters are important for both pronunciation and spelling, and how phonics can be helpful in teaching children and English learners about silent letters. By understanding silent letters, English learners can improve their fluency and accuracy in spoken and written English. We also discuss some words for each letter of alphabet that contains such silent letters. Download the accompanying PDF from here. This week, Clint has a conversation with author, L. David Marquet. David is a top graduate of the US Naval Academy, commanded the nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine USS Santa Fe and now works with businesses nationwide as a leadership consultant. Since retiring from the Navy, he's written two books, “Turn the Ship Around: A True Story of Turning Leaders Into Followers” and “Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say — and What You Don't.” On the podcast, David discusses the importance of teams using resilient language instead of inherently fragile language, the reason leadership styles from the industrial revolution don't work today, and why collaborating effectively results in commitment.

David Marquet's book, Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say and What You Don't really struck a chord with me on how managers communicate and what outcomes result. Marquet uses the sinking of the El Faro cargo ship as his case study and shares fascinating details about how people of authority speak and how that influences the people on their team. In this episode, I give insight into ways managers can leave space in conversations to allow for a less-directive atmosphere, one that is inclusive and gives space for healthy debate and team contribution.
The following is a conversation between David Marquet, Author of Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say and What You Don't, and Denver Frederick, the Host of The Business of Giving. Too many leaders fall in love with the sound of their own voice and wind up dictating plans and digging in their heels when problems begin to emerge. Even when they want to be a more collaborative leader, they can undermine their own efforts by defaulting to command and control language we've inherited from the industrial era. My next guest says it's time to toss that old playbook, and that begins with choosing the words that can dramatically improve decision making and execution on your team. He is Captain David Marquet, Author of Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say and What You Don't.
Have you heard about the IELTS test? As takeIELTS.net is a sponsor of this podcast, I decided to do a mock speaking with Aisha, from Oman, and give her feedback on her performance. If you still don't know anything about the test and how important it is internationally, I suggest you should head over to ielts.org to find out more about it. The speaking component of the IELTS is quite simple in its structure, but you do have to show how much English you know if you wish to break the barrier of the 7 points, which is equivalent to a C1 (Advanced) in the CEFR. In future episodes, I'll come with some tips to improve in this section of the exam. In the meantime, listen to my feedback on Aisha's performance to see how you can also improve and what to pay attention to if you wish to stand a good chance. In today's episode, Daniel Goodson joins us to talk about how much he loves learning languages. We discussed what he loves about learning English, what he finds difficult, and, most of all, what he does to improve. I believe he's a great example of self-determination and motivation to learn English. We spoke about a lot of things, from accents, receptive and productive skills, code-switching and many more things. Daniel manages the website My Fluent Podcast and from there, you can subscribe to his two podcasts: My Fluent Podcast and My Fluent Podcast (Vocabulary). Hosting the podcasts has given him the opportunity to learn English and overcome his shyness. In this interview, he showed very good control of many complex structures, combined with discourse markers that helped him stay in focus. Daniel gave us some good examples of wh- cleft sentences, relative clauses, and a not so common comparative form: the double comparative, which is a form of parallel structures. His discourse management was what stood out the most, using a wide range of ways of directing his ideas to guide us through what he was saying. Next week, I'll recycle some of the concepts I spoke about in this episode, especially the one about backchannels. I'll tell you how to improve the way you tell stories by looking at how people use anecdotes and how others react to them. I'll speak about the common problems that learners usually have and give you some ideas on how to improve. Remember to like, share, rate, and review this podcast on any platform you're subscribed to. In this episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with Jeff Kichaven, one of the country's top mediators and a Legal Thought Leader, about his recently published article in Law360, "What You Say in Online Mediation May be Discoverable" which is causing quite a stir in the mediation community! For many practitioners, the idea of mediation confidentiality is a given. In fact, many mediators include a confidentiality agreement in their agreement to mediate and tout the promise of confidentiality to participants. The problem? According to experienced mediator and attorney, Jeff Kichaven, and his co-authors Theresa Frisbie and Tyler Codina in their article for Law360, "What You Say in Online Mediation May Be Discoverable", the promise of confidentiality is not one that a mediator has the power to keep and by making that promise, mediators run a risk they may not wish to take after hearing this episode. Find out what the risks are, how the rise of online mediation adds to those risks and what Jeff suggests mediators do to solve the problem, all in this episode! Learn more about this week's Special Guest: Jeff Kichaven, is "Ranked in Chambers (USA) 2020" as one of the country's top mediators, and "Who's Who Legal" lists him as a "Global Elite Thought Leader" in mediation, one of only five in the United States and 20 in the world. He is an Honors Graduate of Harvard Law School, a Phi Beta Kappa Graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and an Elected Member of the American Law Institute.
