Becky Leach is today's guest on the podcast and it is a powerful one. She talks about surviving abuse and about how therapy is definitely a good thing for all of us at some point in our lives. No matter what your story is, you will find strength and encouragement listening to her story. She is such an amazing woman and artist, click the link below to go and check her out and to order her book, The Pivot: Believing God When You Really, Really Don't Want To. Bio: Becky is a writer, a speaker, and an artist. It is her incredible honor to write and teach about Jesus. Becky lives in Allen, Texas with her high school sweetheart, their three kids, and the newest addition to the bunch- Franklin, their beloved golden doodle. Other things to note: She is serious about how she takes her coffee, was recently elected PTA President, and is in search of the best Meat Lover's Pizza. But Becky is also a survivor. A victim of sexual assault as a child and teen, it is something she hopes to advocate against for the rest of her life. Her journey to recovery spills out into every word that she writes. (News articles & podcast interviews can be found on her website.) Becky wants to use every chance she gets to testify to the freedom she's found by simply choosing to believe God. Whether it is writing a blog post or preparing for a women's conference. Whether it's speaking to a MOPs group or sitting on a Victim Advocacy Panel. Whether it's painting artwork for someone's home or writing a new chapter for her book. Becky's greatest prayer is that you don't see her, but Jesus. I'm honored to bring you this special part two with dyslexic writer, award winning author, entrepreneur and activist Jonathan Mooney, this time interviewed by my neurodivergent college freshman son, Ryan Neale. If you haven't yet listened to part one for a full exploration of Jonathan's E.P.I.C. life journey, I encourage you to go to that episode next. This episode, inspired by part one, was Ryan's opportunity, just before he left for college, to ask Jonathan for wisdom and guidance about how to flourish at a university while being neurodivergent. What unfolded was that and so much more. In this episode, I passed the microphone completely to Ryan, sat back and listened to him and Jonathan uncover how we can all learn and live outside the lines and stop faking normal. I invite you to listen to this conversation with the same sense of curiosity and trust. I hope you will arrive at the end as Ryan, Jonathan and I all did, personally transformed by the experience.     About Jonathan Mooney: Jonathan Mooney is a dyslexic writer and activist who did not learn to read until he was 12 years old. He is a graduate of Brown University and holds an honors degree in English Literature. At Brown, he became the co-founder of Project Eye-To-Eye, a widely duplicated mentoring program for disabled students. He is also a winner of the prestigious Truman Scholarship for graduate studies in creative writing and education and was a national finalist for the Rhodes scholarship. Jonathan Mooney's work has been featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, USA Today, HBO, NPR, ABC News, New York Magazine, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe. A nationally recognized advocate for neurological and physical diversity, he's been speaking across the nation about neurological and physical diversity for two decades, inspiring those who live with differences and calling for change. He has published three books: The Short Bus, Learning Outside the Lines, and Normal Sucks.   Connect with Jonathan: Website | www.jonathanmooney.com  Facebook | www.facebook.com/TheJonathanMooney  Twitter | @_jonathanmooney  Instagram | @thejonathanmooney  LinkedIn | www.linkedin.com/jonathan-mooney  Jonathan's Books Mentioned in this Episode: Normal Sucks: How to Live, Learn, and Thrive Outside the Lines : www.amazon.com/normalsucks Learning outside the Lines: www.amazon.com/Learning_Outside_the_Lines     About Ryan Neale: Ryan Neale is a neurodivergent UCLA Freshman from San Mateo, California. His parents discovered he was differently wired when he was 18 months old but he has been in mainstream education for his academic career, with most people around him not knowing about some of the struggles that he faces. His experiences masking his neuro differences have given him a unique perspective on many of the struggles neurodiverse people face, such as public stigma, internalized ableism, and the ever-present desire to fit in. As he has begun advocating more for his needs, he has high hopes to use his perspective and communication skills to increase public understanding of neurodiversity, and hopefully create a more inclusive society for everyone. In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball, coaching youth sports, roughhousing with his little brother, and diving headfirst into his many fantasy special interests. He is thrilled to have participated in the 2022 Stanford Neurodiversity Summit on a K-12 student panel. You can listen to the panel here. The importance of seeking out people in your life that can help you build self-knowledge and find the good in you What Ryan and Jonathan think Batman has to teach neurodiverse students The negative impact of trying to pass or mask as “normal” and what helped Jonathan move from shame to pride in his own journey    Jonathan's message to “find your crew” and do something to contribute and make the world better The commitment Ryan is making as he embarks on his college journey Resources and Topics Mentioned: Free tools for testing your Signature learning strengths: www.gallup.com/cliftonstrengths  www.thrively.com  Speech-to-Text App: otter.ai  Eye-to-Eye: www.jonathanmooney.com/project/eyetoeye    Related Podcast Episodes: Listen to these Next Ep 90: Different is not Deficient with Normal Sucks Author Jonathan Mooney Ep 87: Embracing Neurodiversity and Being an Adult with Julie Lythcott-Haims and Ryan Neale   This Episode's Challenge:  Jonathan challenges us to not ask yourself, “are you going to be successful?” but instead,  to hold yourself accountable to be successful in the right way.  He wants us to stop hiding and be out and proud of our differences that make us special. This way, we can give to the community with purpose, pride, and passion.   This Episode is dedicated by Cindy McCormick: Some people are lucky enough to have a career doing EXACTLY what they were born to do - Cindy is one of them. She loves running Cindy McCormick College Advising (CMCA,) but more importantly, she thrives on guiding high school students along their paths to college. She received her B.A., teaching credential, and Masters in Education from UCLA; instructional writing certification from UC Santa Barbara; and college counseling certificate from UC San Diego. With the highest standards in education, training, and ethics, she believes in getting to know her students thoroughly while relentlessly researching schools to ultimately guide kids to their best fit college homes. Before college advising, Cindy taught school in both Westchester County, NY and Southern California, and then specialized as a college application and essay writing instructor. She also served as a PTA President and a team manager of a global top-ranked STEM student team for ten years.   As a mother of five children, Gifted And Talented educator, autism specialist, and Spanish bilingual instructor, Cindy embraces diverse abilities, perspectives and backgrounds. Her wide variety of experiences allow her to bond with all kinds of teenage personalities and interests; she delights in getting to know each student, motivating and coaching them, and ultimately customizing their unique college plans. Louisville, Kentucky -- This is an edited-down-to-49-minutes version of the actual meeting that took place in PTA President Heather Wampler's basement on March 5, 2017 where myriad "causes" were manufactured and presented until there was enough "evidence" to justify removing a concerned JCPS advocate from the district's PTA board. In 2019, these same individuals rigged their elections so that she and other moms did not stand a snowball's chance at holding a seat on the board. National PTA was notified of these offenses, and they referred us to Kentucky PTA, which was run by the same handful of individuals, including Eddie Squires (current district PTA president and former KY PTA president), Sharon Whitworth (former JCPS employee), Autumn Neagle (former district PTA President), and Cherie Dimar (former President of both entities). JCPS district leaders were also notified on several occasions, and they did nothing, and in some cases denied it was happening. All documentation to these allegations will be posted on our website at www.dearjcps.com/audio-archives.

The first male president of the national PTA did not take office until 2009 and in that same year, only 10% of national PTA members were men. Why don't more men join and how can we change that? This episode features a Utah PTA dad who holds a role 100% focused on changing these statistics. Learn how you can make a change in your organization as well. About our guest: Jason Nackos is a former teacher who taught at the junior high level for 3 years before he “retired” to raise his kids full time. He started to get involved in the PTA once his youngest started school full time because of his desire to be in the school and embarrass his kids on a regular basis. He has served two years as Membership VP, one as President Elect and one as PTA President at Mapleton Elementary in Mapleton, Utah. He currently serves as the Male Engagement Specialist for Utah PTA where he oversees a committee that focuses on increasing male involvement throughout the state. He and his friend Ryan Schriever (a local attorney and former Membership VP at Mapleton Elementary) went viral with a carpool karaoke video in 2018 that co-starred their principal. From there they continued to make videos for their school and for Utah PTA and became affectionately known as The PTA Dads. ON WITH THE SHOW.   My guest this week is a very good friend of the family. Nate Harrison is the founder of the daycare "Mile High Adventures." Located in the Denver Colorado metro area: http://www.milehighadvntrs.com/ About Nate: "I've been working with children since 1995; most often as a child care provider, and in 2011 I decided to go private after feeling that so many programs were focused on something other than families and children.  I hold an elementary education degree in Colorado with a PE endorsement, won the State Pickleball Gold Medal in 2014 and 2015, am captain/coach of a men's ice hockey team at the Promenade (Four Championships and three 2nd place finishes in 9 seasons leading the team), and was PTA President at Ryan Elementary in Jefferson County from 2010-2012. I've coached soccer, football, tennis, kayaking/canoeing, and hockey; am a rock climbing instructor for Westminster Rec, been a Girl Scout counselor (residential and day camp), the head instructor and run the snowboard department at SolVista Basin/Granby Ranch in Colorado for six seasons, and have worked in Indiana and Boston with children as a para, substitute teacher, and child care provider. I have a 15 year old son who plays competitive hockey at Hyland Hills (MVP his second season; Captain in his 4th season), leading scorer for Standley Lake in his sophmore year - proud Dad moment, has won 5 state championships in flag football, (though he doesn't give enough credit to his handsome coach), plays lacrosse, and snowboards, wakesurfs, climbs, bikes, and pretty much plays any of the sports I do. My guiding philosophy is having children being outside and active as much as possible.  This helps them gain independence, see the playground of nature, and create lasting memories."   Nate and his son Gabe are HUGE Denver Bronco fans and I wanted to ask Nate right off the bat (no pun intended) how they are dealing with no sports. I do have to mention that Nate is an avid Pickleball player and yes, we do mock him about the sport. Then Nate got me on my lack of being very good at Scrabble. There are some great tips from Nate to help parents out with getting our kids active during these unusual times. Nate does mention someone on the radio named "Stink," who is former NFL player Mark Schlereth heard on 104.3 The Fan in Denver. Nate's son Gabe has been doing online schools for a few years and he offers up one key way to help our kids with getting through each school day. Have an open and honest dialog with your kids was something that really stood out to me that Nate talked about. We both agreed that our American school system is broken. Our hope is that schools will recognize this and make changes. If you want to contribute to Nate's cause after listen to this episode to start his own school PLEASE do so. His daycare is very cutting edge but also logical and a better way to teach kids. Even Seth Godin thinks that our school system is in need of repair.   Tommy Maloney is the Executive producer and host of the podcast Blending The Family, where you can find on Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Spotify, and Stitcher Radio.    Tommy has spoken at TEDx, Ignite Fort Collins, and Keynote Speaker at Everything Dad Convention. Unable to use her right arm, she utilized her background in coding and engineering to transition to web design and data analysis, analyzing and improving brand performance by increasing traffic, leads, and engagement through optimized online platforms and improved web design. A confessed motorhead,Emily started podcasting as "The MotoDoll" in an effort to connect with the community she lost after her injury. Through car stories she discovered that everyone is looking to journey boldly from one destination to the next, and that we often need a wingman to overcome roadblocks. The MotoDoll became the vehicle of her own reinvention. She later founded The MotoDoll LLC, Brand Management and Web Design, offering services that increase traffic, leads, and sales by building brands that build community. Emily is a board member of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast and an advocate for women in leadership. We are discussing the importance of values in pain care and how values are approached through the lens of acceptance and commitment therapy. In acceptance and commitment therapy, the term values refers to activities that give your life meaning. Values can be looked upon as the people, the causes and the activities that are deeply important to you. When you connect to your values, you’re able to move your life forward in meaningful directions even in the face of very difficult and very painful experiences. This is why values are so important because in clinical trials, values are associated with lots of positive outcomes. Even if pain itself does not change, you can have less anxiety, less depression and improved physical function and enjoy a much richer, full and active life. The best part of values is that you choose your own values. Often people can confuse a value with a goal. Values are not goals and you never accomplish a value. Instead, values act like a compass that helps you make choices and move you in the direction that you want to go. Values keep you on track with a rich, full and active life, even if you have some pain. Joining us is JoAnne Dahl. She is a Professor of Psychology at Uppsala University in Sweden and a clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral medicine. She is the co-author of the book, The Art and Science of Valuing in Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Chronic Pain, Living Beyond Your Pain and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Relational Frame Theory in Relationships. We’ll discuss many types of values or what are known as value domains and acceptance and commitment therapy. Values can be a huge topic that many people spend lots and lots of years studying. Values work can be distilled or focus into ten categories. These ten value domains for you to think about are parenting, family and friends, intimate relationships, work, leisure, citizenship, personal growth, health, spirituality and community. As you participate, take a moment to notice what’s essential in your life when you hear one of these value domains mentioned. For example, we’ll discuss the domain of personal care. Personal care can also be looked upon as your personal health which is an important topic for people overcoming chronic pain. Think about how you would like to take care of your body or how you’d like to take care of your health when it comes to exercise or diet under the ideal circumstances. See if you can connect this to a deeper health value that’s personal to you. For example, you may think, “I want to feel healthy and strong when it comes to exercise.” That’s great and it’s important but then I want you to take that one level deeper and I want you to know or I want you to ask yourself, “Why is this important? Why is it important for me to be healthy and strong?” Notice what comes up for you. You may notice, “I want to be healthy and strong so I can coach my son’s baseball games,” or “I want to be healthy and strong so I can be the PTA President at my daughter’s elementary school,” or possibly, “I want to be healthy and strong so I can be a loving and supportive daughter for my mom who is getting older and is not able to take care of herself anymore.” There are lots of reasons why you value being healthy and strong. To accompany this episode, I’ve included the Bull’s Eye Values worksheet for you to download. The Bull’s Eye is a values clarification exercise you can use whether you are somewhat with pain or you’re a practitioner and you’re interested in implementing values work during your therapy sessions. The Bull’s Eye worksheet is a one-page handout and a useful tool that you can use in practice whether you’re a physical medicine professional or a mental health professional. To download the Bull’s Eye worksheet, all you have to do is text the word 152Download to the number 44222 or you can go to IntegrativePainScienceInstitute.com/152download. Wendy Tibus, Founder of Get Movin' Fundraising, was a PTA President for her children’s school and a volunteer for years in the early 2000’s. As PTA President she brought the very first DIY Fun Run to the school and raised $28k in 2 weeks. It was a huge success at the time and prompted her devotion for engaging more into helping schools be successful. It was obvious that healthy donation based fundraisers were superseding any type of sales based fundraisers like junk food or unnecessary products. Parents jumped right on board with helping their child reach a donation goal while promoting physical activity. Through that experience, Wendy learned so much about what she could personally do to help re-shape an industry and provide a new way for people to view school fundraising as positive for the future. https://www.getmovinfundraising.com/

Terry Norwood joined me yesterday afternoon for pleasant conversation about her campaign for Poway School Board in Area C (mostly Rancho Bernardo).  Terry has carved out a unique position in her race.  She is the only challenger running against two incumbents.  She is the only woman on the ballot.  She is the only Rancho Bernardo resident in the race for a district that is primarily about representing Rancho Bernardo's interests. Terry Norwood has spent a great deal of her time as an active member in her community.  She served as PTA President at Rancho Bernardo High School.  She spent numerous years working on the Rancho Bernardo Grad Night event including one year as Committee Chair.  She has served on the school site council at RB High.  She serves on the Palomar PTA Council (the umbrella PTA organization for all of PUSD).  She has served on the Rancho Bernardo Planning Commission and as a board member on the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation.  Plus she has great experience serving in organizations that support local military families.  Her progression to become a candidate for school board is simply the next logical step in her journey to serve her community. Terry Norwood prides herself on out-of-the-box thinking looking for creative ways to bring new resources to help students in the classroom.  She sees a great need for an active CTE (Career Technical Education) program (aka vocational education) to supplement the traditional college track courses in high school.  We discussed the unique vocational programs available at various high schools that are simply under publicized and thus not offering the full potential of value for students in the area.  She sees opportunities to bring in local businesses to offer internships, to coordinate resources to help students in specialized programs (i.e. robotics) and to offer training at school sites.  While she will lobby Sacramento for more educational funding from the state budget, she wants to also maximize revenue sources available in our own backyard. We discussed her background growing up in Bell County Texas, living abroad in Sicily and on the western outpost of America along the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.  This broad experience with different cultures and lifestyles gives Terry the ability to better empathize with the unique needs of students, teachers, parents, administrators and taxpayers of various backgrounds. Her race offered up many fascinating topics of discussion.  She may be one of the few candidates in America that is facing off against TWO incumbents in the same race.  Because of the challenging 3-2 majority dynamic on the board with her two opponents often on opposite sides of many key issues, this may open up a 4-lane highway down the center as she works to win the race.  Terry hopes to capitalize on this anti-incumbency feeling amongst the electorate. I was particularly intrigued with her ideas to provide visual and performing arts not simply as a separate and distinct school program, but instead as an integrated and money-saving program that helps reinforce lessons in history, social science, literature and other disciplines (including special events like Grad Night).  She strongly believes that different students learn differently, so different methods of teaching must be available (textbook, learning-by-doing, creative presentations, etc.).  We also spoke about her learnings as a mother of a special needs student and how she can help PUSD with special needs education.  Finally we also touched on the lack of long term planning at PUSD particularly with financial and safety matters. But that wasn't all we addressed in this 2-hour discussion.  I invite you to listen and watch as we covered other issues including Rancho Bernardo High School Principal David LeMaster, US Army, US Navy, basketball, tennis, strategies on breaking the 3-2 majority dynamic, how she will work together with other board members and provide stability,

Khateebah Farrah N. Khan delivered the 23rd khutbah for The Women's Mosque of America on November 18th, 2016. In her timely and inspiring khutbah, Farrah shares with the congregation the lessons she learned in her run for Irvine city council, she encourages the congregation to keep hope alive despite the tense post-election political climate, and she ultimately rallies Muslim women everywhere to run for public office. Bio: Farrah N. Khan has worked extensively with many community organizations to host events, collaborate on efforts and provide support. She founded a children's interfaith group, First Drops, in 2011. The organization provides children (ages 5-13) and their families opportunities to go on site visits to churches, synagogues, mosques and temples throughout Orange County to get a better understanding of one another. The group partners with a local Church every 4th Sunday of the month to feed the homeless population in Santa Ana. Farrah has always enjoyed working with the community. She started by volunteering at her children's school and several non-profits. She committed to being an active PTA member and has since served on the PTA Board at the Elementary and Middle School level. She served as PTA President for 3 terms at her sons' elementary school, served on the PTA Board at the Middle School and is currently serving on the School Site Council at the High School. She and her husband are also Legacy Partners with the Irvine Public School Foundation. One of Farrah's joys has been serving on the Steering Committee for the Irvine Global Village Festival for the past 6 years. She is also a proud CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteer with the Irvine Police Department, a program she highly recommends for every resident and business of Irvine. Farrah currently serves as the Executive Director of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council. Farrah finds great pride in working with the faith communities not only for dialogue, but also to discuss social and economic issues affecting Irvine, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. Farrah was appointed as a Community Services Commissioner in 2014. During her time as Commissioner, she was the only Commissioner who took the time to get to know the city parks, open spaces, land development, amenities and employees. She was an advocate for sufficient park space. Farrah just ran for Irvine City Council in the 2016 election as a first time candidate and is proud to have placed 4th out of 11 candidates in a hard-fought race.

Sandra served as PTA President for 3 schools, Secretary and member of 3 School Site Councils, 3 years on the Student Attendance Review Team and Student Attendance Review Board for the LA Unified School District, and numerous committees to reduce truancy and suspensions. In addition, Sandra served on Mayor Aja Brown's task force for the City of Compton. As a longtime leader within her church, she founded the “Rites of Passage” mentoring program in 2007, a program for boys between the ages of 14 to 24.  Twenty of twenty-two participants in the program have gone on to attend college and are gainfully employed. In 1994, Sandra began her career with the Los Angeles County Probation Department and she has worked in more than eight units over the course of twenty-two years.  Management repeatedly selects Sandra to provide leadership, training and mentioning to her co-workers because of her energetic personality, positive outlook, ability to motivate and her “can do” attitude. Sandra has taught hundreds of Juvenile Detention Officers and Deputy Probation Officers as an Adjunct Professor for more than ten years at West Los Angeles College.  She has provided probation supervision and preventive services at more than twenty-six elementary, middle and high school campuses.  She has received multiple “employee of the year” awards, and in February 2015, State Senator Holly J. Mitchell recognized Sandra for her outstanding community service. In November Sandra Moss was elected to the Compton Unified School Board of Trustees.  This was her very first run for elected office, and the students of Compton Unified School District will benefit greatly from the wise decision of the voters to elect her to this office!
