This conversation was originally recorded in May of 2024 when Jim Roussell spoke to leaders in the Baltimore City Fire Department during the BCFD's first weeklong LUF Optimizing Human Performance (MPI) Course. Jim Roussell served with the Chicago Police Department for more than 36 years and spent most of his career in gang-tactical units. He commanded the 24th District and the department's mobile strike force which targeted gang violence citywide. Jim also served with the US Marines for 39 years where he held numerous billets in infantry and intelligence assignments in both active duty and reserve capacities. He deployed to Iraq on three separate occasions with Marine infantry battalions. Jim has a Doctor of Education from Olivet Nazarene University and serves as a chief mentor for the LUF team.
Since our formal inception more than a decade ago, the Leadership Under Fire Team has championed professional reading. We have fervently advocated for increased professional reading in the American Fire Service and similar high risk industries that do not enjoy the robust professional development curricula that the US military provides. The LUF team believes that a careful examination of history's most accomplished mission oriented leaders reveals that their success was strongly correlated to a scholarly appreciation of literature and professional reading. We have been humbled to watch many in the LUF network devour books that on the surface have nothing to do with the fire service, and yet everything to do with the fire ground. The past several years has challenged each of us as well as our families, institutions, communities, and nation in a myriad of ways: military conflict in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, a global pandemic, civil and political unrest at home. The proliferation of digital communications platforms and the emergence of disruptive technology have only exacerbated the intellectual, emotional, and moral demands on those of us leading in mission oriented and lethal vocations. Leaders with four years of service and leaders with four decades of service alike have found today's operational environment to be disorienting and uncomfortable. The unfortunate news is that there is no evidence that the pace and acceleration of technological and social change and instability is likely to slow anytime soon. The favorable news is that the predicament we find ourselves in might not be as novel as we think. If we look at history through a wider lens, professional reading has never been as critical as it is now. Rigorous reading affords each of us valuable insight that provides principled leaders encouragement, and even a roadmap for navigating institutional and social technical changes. In 2022, LUF launched our inaugural book club. The online book club has been a conduit to meaningful discourse, reflection, and critical thought. It was only fitting that LU F's Senior Mentor Jim Roussell served as the initial LUF book club leader given his infectious commitment to professional reading over the course of his remarkable career in the United States Marine Corps and Chicago Police Department. In this podcast episode, Jim unpacks Marcus Aurelius's meditations and provides valuable insight into how leaders use professional reading to cultivate leadership, critical thinking, and complex problem solving skills.
Meeting new people and learning from others is something that I really enjoy doing. That is why, ever since 2016, I have been highlighting some of those people each year that I think you should follow and learn from. They are people/groups I've learned a lot from and highly recommend. You can find the previous years here: 2016, 2017 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 In order to make my list, the criteria is two-fold. For starters, these people have to be involved in Church Communications, Social Media, Student or Family Ministry or Online Ministry. Secondly, they also need to be sharing great content on a consistent basis. And that's it. It's pretty simple but those are the important aspects of my criteria. So, in NO particular order, here are the top 6 to seek out in 2024: Peter Von Kahle. Peter is a videographer working for numerous ministries and Churches for video and marketing support.. He's on Twitter/X, has an awesome blog with tons of great insights and encouragement. Here my conversation with him about Premiere Pro Tips here. Kenny Jahng. She offers great webinars, training sessions and consulting for Churches and ministry leaders to help them become more proficient in the digital world. In addition to her website, you can find her on Facebook. Here my conversation with her here. Aaron Magnuson. Currently, Aaron is working at Pray.com and has been for the past year and a half. However, he started doing online ministry for 10 years serving as an Online Pastor for 10 years at Churches in Oregon, California and Texas. He is also the co-host of the Social Media Church Podcast with Nils Smith and DK Hammonds. He's been doing that for the past 5 years. You can find him on Twitter/X. Imagine you're my guest for a moment. You're 11 years old, and for as long as you can remember, you have ridden on your grandfather's shoulders as he recounted tales of the family businesses' trials and tribulations, while walking you through your family's property and buildings. Your grandfather frequently shares with pride: “Reg, one day, you'll own all of this.” Then suddenly, at 11 years old, you get a call. Your grandfather had an accident and has died. Stunned, you watch a family war break out in front of your eyes. Your family is torn apart – brother against brother, cousin against cousin – and your father is expected to take over the company at an age far younger than he ever anticipated. Now you're an adult? What would you do? My guest today, Reg Athwal, chose to become the bridge that brought his family back together. And now, because of his experience watching a family business be torn apart and then reconciled, he now breaks the code on running successful family businesses. Reg is the Founder & Chairman of RTS Global Partners and Founder & Chief Educator of the Family Business Academy, and he has privately advised 200+ family-owned businesses and family offices in 25 countries over 2 decades. “Only 3% of businesses get to the 4th generation. One of the longest standing family businesses in the US is the Shirley Plantation. There is a family business in Japan that is on the 43rd generation! How did they do this? There are three things everyone must have to build a legacy…” – Reg AthwalWhat are the key factors that determine the success of a multi-generational family business? Reg cracks the code for us today. We listen to his experience and perspective on: • What parents/grandparents can do to help their children “catch the fire” to take over the company • What Reg's family does to ensure each child is encouraged to developed entrepreneurial and leadership skills of their own • The largest pitfalls many family businesses face that cause them to fail • Ways to create harmony and unity in the family, including a core set of values As someone who runs my own family business (real estate and property management), I have experienced the exact challenges + joys that Reg dissects for us today! ------------------ Connect with Reg! In this episode of Silicon Valley Insider, Keith Koo’s special guest is Chief Mentor of Next-Gen Leaders, Jason Ma. As the founder and CEO of ThreeEQ, and acclaimed author of “Young Leaders 3.0”, Jason is a globally recognized coach and mentor of Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z clients, including C-suite executives and high-potential candidates in their careers and academic life. Since 2014, Jason has served as Silicon Valley’s leading member of the Business 20 (B20) Future of Work and Education Taskforce. Through the G20 Presidencies in Australia, Turkey, China, Germany, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia in 2020, Jason is one of only a few hundred notable business leaders worldwide handpicked to be B20 members. As the G20’s business advisory council, the B20 is the official voice of the private sector and recommends policies to the G20 Heads of State and governments, representing the global business community across all G20 economies. (The G20 represents over 80% of the global nominal GDP of nearly US$90 trillion and ⅔ of the worldwide population of 7.8 billion people.) It is Jason’s diverse background and in-depth know-how in (tech) business, education, and mentoring on a global stage that gives him a unique perspective on how to mentor and coach his clients in navigating and succeeding at next levels in the “New Normal”. Throughout the show, Jason shares his deep insights into what is on the mind of leaders and the tools that they need to develop to be an effective business leader, academic, or student. You definitely don’t want to miss Jason’s facts and figures. (On this week’s Cyber-Tip, Keith emphasizes the importance of staying vigilant when you are engaging in Telehealth. Cyber attacks continue to increase and Telehealth is a major target for nefarious groups. Keith also discusses how law enforcement agencies in particular are being subjected to many more attacks due to current events.) In “The Pivot”, Jason gives a “call to action” on how to raise your and your children’s “delta” early on and achieve more in life. He enlightens us on what college admissions “myopia” means and that even many alumni from and students at Ivy League and other top schools still have not reached their full potential. He gives great advice on how to adapt, win, and grow in an atmosphere of persistent “hyper-competition”.

I was honored to be the keynote speaker at five different conferences this month, all over the country -- from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Denver and Philadelphia, and I just got back from New York. And, what I noticed at all of these events and previous ones during the past few years, is that I've seen a lot more Millennials attending real estate events. It's been incredible to see how quickly some of these young people can build a business. For some, it seems like their energy and tech savvy creates companies overnight. And while these brilliant people know technology better than perhaps other generations, what they don't have necessarily is life experience. What would happen if you could merge wisdom with fresh ideas? Our guest today is Chip Conley, the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality which he began in 1987 at age 26. In 2010, after having created and managed 50 boutique hotels that are mostly in California, he sold his company. A few years later, he was asked by the three co-founders of Airbnb if he could help evolve the company into a hospitality company with more than one million hosts in 191 countries. He accepted the challenge and became the Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for Airbnb, working closely with CEO Brian Chesky as a mentor. www.RealWealthShow.com

Ernesto Spruyt is the founder of https://tunga.io, an online market network that provides international clients access to African coding talent. He also happens to serve as Chief Mentor for Telegraph Media Group’s DigitalX accelerator program in Amsterdam. Among some of the things Ernesto chatted to Andile Masuku about is what prompted him to come to Africa looking for coding talent, and what he reckons African coders who aspire to having international careers ought to be keeping top of mind.
The French e-commerce startup, Afrimarket, has raised €10 million from the Global Innovation Fund and the private sector arm of the French Development Agency (AFD), Proparco, as well from as a handful of individual investors such as the co-founder of PriceMinister, Olivier Mathiot, who’s been granted a seat on Afrimarket’s board. At a glance, the company seems to have it made-- except that growth within the e-commerce sector across the continent has consistently failed to meet expectations, and foreign-owned, foreigner-run e-commerce copy-cat plays backed by the likes of Rocket Internet continue to have precious little to show in terms of solid success. The bottom line is that this is Africa, and Afrimarket’s founder and CEO, Rania Belkahia, better have a few good tricks up her sleeve, including a tonne of patience and access to a lot more cash, if her company is to achieve its ambitious aspiration of dominating the French-speaking West African e-commerce market. In this week’s episode of the African Tech Round-up, we share a conversation Andile Masuku had with Ernesto Spruyt, the founder of Tunga, an online market network that provides international clients access to African coding talent. He also happens to serve as Chief Mentor for Telegraph Media Group’s DigitalX accelerator program in Amsterdam. Ernesto explains what prompted him to come to Africa looking for coding talent, and shares a few key things African coders who aspire to having international careers ought to be keeping top of mind. Trying to get your creative project off the ground? Sweat equity will only get you so far. At some point, you’ll probably need some cash from others. But how are you going to get it? Don Pare is the Chief Mentor at Real Value Capital (RvC Inc.). He and his team connect film producers, musicians and digital media creators with private investors (“angels”) looking to fund creative projects with start-up money and, eventually, expecting to make a profit on the successful projects they support. But he also advocates crowd funding as a first step to accelerate the process. A great crowd funding campaign can, in turn, attract angel investors who can help fund and distribute a project far beyond your initial objectives. Don stresses story telling: “Something to believe in.” You provide a great story and the universe will help you fund it. And Don helps show you how to make that happen. He shares great tips (and great enthusiasm) for helping creators develop and distribute their products. Don’s connections with 10,000 angels worldwide may just be the next step you need to take.
