Near our home is a famous garden where we often take walks with a young boy our family cares for. His favorite area is the Children’s Garden, which has a small door large enough for him to run through but small enough to force me to crouch. He laughs as I drop to my knees and wiggle through the small opening to chase him. The small garden gate reminds me of Jesus’ object lesson in Matthew 18 where Jesus calls a little child to His side to explain the type of person who will enter the kingdom of heaven (v. 2). It was a bold example, for in Christ’s day to be a child was to be inconsequential and overlooked. Unlike today, their opinions and desires didn’t matter. Jesus uses this description to highlight our human tendency to be noticed and seek power and influence. Of course, Jesus wasn’t asking His disciples to become children again, but rather pointing to the traits that mark those who serve him. The biggest marker is humility—the person who “takes the lowly position” (v. 4) and serves others. The small garden door is a reminder that humility doesn’t come naturally to us. Believers in Jesus, however, are to be this way. We’re to follow our Savior, who modeled this way of living by making “himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (Philippians 2:6).
Romans 10:14-17 — Why does the Christian church gather weekly to hear a message when each person could be at home reading from the Bible? In his sermon on Romans 10:14–17 titled “Why Preaching?” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones addresses this question as he delivers a message about the importance of preaching as it is God's chief way for the gospel to be heard. Reading is right and good for the knowledgeable Christian, but for someone newly touched by the Holy Spirit, the words of a pastor are formative to their acceptance of the good news. Dr. Lloyd-Jones recalls the Ethiopian man who was reading the Old Testament but could not understand the writings. He needed Philip to come into his chariot and explain its meaning. This is the wonderful power of preaching. In addition to this truth, Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains how important it is for believers to gather in church to hear a message. Believers, he says, need to be present for those who need help. Perhaps it is a person has lost a family member, needs encouragement, or needs help understanding the sermon. Believers are there to also lean on each other. He concludes by saying that preaching can be the powerful spark of revival and that the gathering of Christians has the potential to glorify God in ways that didn't seem possible. New church plants often begin with vision, faith, and a deep sense of calling—but they also come with real challenges. This devotional reflects on how easy it can be to assume a new church has everything under control, especially when leaders don’t openly ask for help. Over time, good intentions can quietly turn into distance or apathy, even when the need is still very real. The reminder here is simple and important: church planting is never meant to be done alone. God uses many people in different roles—some to plant, some to water—but He alone brings the growth. Even when we don’t know exactly how to get involved, prayer is always a meaningful place to start. Interceding for a church plant, its leaders, and its community is not a passive act; it’s participation in God’s work. This devotional encourages believers to be proactive rather than waiting for an invitation. Support doesn’t always look like finances or formal volunteering. Sometimes it’s faithful prayer, encouragement, or simply staying attentive to what God might be prompting you to do. When we care about what God is building in our communities, we reflect His heart for the Church—and trust Him to bring growth in His timing and His way. Main Takeaways New church plants often need more support than they openly express. God uses many servants, but He alone brings true growth. Prayer is a powerful and practical way to support church leaders and congregations. Believers don’t need to wait for an invitation to care or intercede. God is pleased when we show concern for His work in our local communities. Today’s Bible Verse “What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” - 1 Corinthians 3:5 Your Daily Prayer Here is a brief excerpt from today’s prayer: “Help me not to become apathetic or turn away from those who need it… Only You can truly give it success.” You can listen to the full prayer here or read the devotional at the links below. Why do some believers fall away from the faith even when starting strong? In this episode of Kitchen Table Theology, Tiffany and Pastor Jeff walk through Luke 14:28–35, where Jesus calls His followers to stop, think, and count the cost of discipleship. Jesus makes clear that following Him is not a casual decision but a lifelong commitment. We discuss why public identification with Christ carries real responsibility, how inconsistency undermines Christian witness, and why Jesus' hard words are meant to bring clarity rather than fear. This episode challenges believers to examine whether their faith is merely a label or a lived reality and encourages listeners to choose a faith that lasts and finishes well. What We Discussed:02:10 Counting the CostJesus' command in Luke 14 is framed as a call to pause, reflect, and understand that discipleship is a serious, intentional commitment, not an emotional decision.03:45 The Danger of Starting Strong Without Finishing WellUsing the illustration of an unfinished building, the episode explains how public profession without perseverance leads to inconsistency and damages Christian witness.05:40 Discipleship Is a Life, Not a LabelFaith is described as more than identification. True discipleship reshapes priorities, obedience, and daily living, not just belief.10:50 What Jesus Meant by “Deny Yourself”Jesus' call to take up the cross is unpacked as surrendering control, ambition, and self-rule in exchange for faithful following.12:40 Understanding the Warning About Flavorless SaltJesus' illustration of salt losing its usefulness is explained as a warning about wasted spiritual influence, not the loss of salvation.14:10 Judgment for Believers and Eternal RewardWe discuss the evaluation of a believer's life at the judgment seat of Christ, where faithfulness and obedience are assessed.15:45 Don't Waste Your LifeDiscipleship is framed as living with eternal purpose, building with lasting materials rather than shallow or temporary commitments.“Discipleship isn't about momentary enthusiasm. It's about public identification and lifelong loyalty to Christ.” - Pastor Jeff Cranston

Recently, my mom gave me a play-by-play of a surprising confrontation she saw on a live webcam feed from a watering hole in Africa. The Gemsbok, a large antelope found in Namibia’s Namib Desert, has horns that can be more than two feet long making it a formidable animal that doesn’t seem to scare easily. That is unless it comes across a group of brave and rowdy ostriches. The lead ostrich, which was taller than its foes, shook its large feathers, roared, and stomped toward three Gemsbok, causing them to flee. “I guess they didn’t realize how powerful their horns are,” I said to my mom. Believers in Jesus can forget the power we have when faced with attacks from our spiritual enemy, Satan. We have the Holy Spirit who lives inside us (Romans 8:11) and the armor of God to help us: “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). Satan wants to challenge our belief in God’s Word, question our identity in Christ and tempt us to sin. But we can stand strong because God’s armor includes: “the belt of truth, . . . the breastplate of righteousness, . . . the shield of faith, . . . the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (vv. 14-17). When the enemy attacks us with feelings of fear, condemnation, or despair, let’s remember we are God’s children. He has given us His armor of truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, His Word, and prayer to stand strong when we face spiritual battles.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires” (Romans 6:11-12). From the moment we place faith in Jesus, our lives change. We are no longer held in bondage to sin in the same way as we used to be. While we will all continue to struggle with sin throughout our lives, we are no longer slaves to sin. Instead, we are children of God. As His children, we are no longer compelled to obey the sinful flesh as we should want to follow, glorify, and obey God in every area of our lives. Many people have radical changes after placing faith in Jesus and I had the privilege of getting to know someone who had one of these amazing changes in their life. There was an employee at my former Bible college who was known to be a previous criminal, and he served many years in prison due to his crimes. While he was in prison, he placed faith in the Lord and his entire life changed. I did not know this person prior to his conversion, but I do know he is one of the kindest individuals I have ever had the honor of meeting. Whenever I think of this individual, I am reminded of the power of the Lord. He can completely transform a person’s life and give them a second chance. This man was always more than happy to tell anyone about Jesus and how much He had done in his life. When we choose to follow Jesus and surrender our lives to Him, only good will come from it. By turning to Jesus, we are choosing life. If you have not placed faith in Jesus yet, know that it is never too late to believe in Him. If you believe that Jesus died for your sins, was buried, and rose again, you will be saved (Romans 10:9-11). Intersecting Faith & Life: The Bible tells us, “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires” (Romans 6:11-12). The Apostle Paul spoke these words to the Roman Church, but they still apply to us today. We are dead to sin, but alive in Christ Jesus. This means that we are no longer subject to obey the sinful flesh. Rather than submitting to worldly desires, we submit ourselves to God (James 4:7). God has powerful things in store for us; all we need to do is follow Him. Even if the sinful flesh tries to tempt us by saying sin is the “better way,” we know that true life is only found in Christ. Turning away from sin looks like staying away from anything that tempts us or causes sin to rise in our hearts. For example, if jealousy is a common sin you struggle with, avoid spending too much time on social media. Choose to practice thankfulness for all the blessings of God in your life and avoid comparing yourself to others. Talk with God in prayer, lean on Him, and study His Word. It may also help to lean on other believers and ask them for their advice in rising above the temptations of the flesh. Jesus Himself knows what it feels like to be tempted, and He will help us find a way to escape it (Hebrews 4:15). Have you been made alive in Christ? If not, what is holding you back? What sin keeps you bogged down? How might you ask the Lord to help you fight back against this sin? Church as the Body and Bride of Christ In Pastor JP's sermon, the focus was on understanding the church as the body and bride of Christ. This sermon, delivered at Skycrest Community Church, emphasized the significance of belonging and transformation within the church community. The Church as Christ's Bride One of the central themes was the imagery of the church as the bride of Christ. This metaphor is not merely poetic but deeply theological, representing a covenant relationship. Ephesians 5:24-27 was highlighted to illustrate how Christ's love for the church is sacrificial and purifying. The passage emphasizes that Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word. Ephesians 5:24-27: "Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless." This covenant language underscores the intentionality and purpose behind Christ's sacrifice, portraying His love as proactive and transformative rather than reactive. Belonging and Becoming The sermon stressed that belonging to the church is just the beginning. In Christ, believers find a place of belonging, but this is merely the starting point of a transformative journey. Pastor JP explained that the church is not just a static entity but a living, breathing body of believers being prepared and transformed into the likeness of Christ. Romans 12:2: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." This transformation is ongoing, involving sanctification and growth into a holy dwelling for God's presence. The process of becoming more like Christ involves challenges and sacrifices, reflecting the deep, intentional love Christ has for His church. The Church as a Living Temple Pastor JP also explored the concept of the church as a living temple. This metaphor emphasizes the church's role as a dwelling place for God's presence, built on the foundation of Christ as the cornerstone. Ephesians 2:20-22: "Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit." This passage highlights the dynamic nature of the church, where believers are the living stones being built into a spiritual house. The sermon encouraged believers to align with Christ, allowing God to shape and mold them into His image. A Call to Renewed Commitment The sermon concluded with a call for renewed commitment to Christ and His church. Believers were encouraged to realign their lives with Christ as the cornerstone and to engage actively with the church community. Pastor JP urged the congregation to resist isolation and consumerism, instead embracing their role as integral parts of the living church. In summary, the sermon was a powerful reminder of the depth of Christ's love for His church and the transformative journey of becoming His radiant bride. It called for a renewed devotion to Christ and active participation in the life of the church, aligning with the vision of being a living temple for God's presence.
Today we further realize the sense of the word “credo,” meaning “I believe.” As we read the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed, we discover the differences between the two and come to understand how the Nicene Creed, which came centuries later, expands upon and explains the beliefs of the Apostles' Creed. Fr. Mike tells us that these Creeds help us to share the essential elements of Catholicism, acting as “symbols of faith,” and encouraging communion between believers. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 185-192. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. The message underscores the importance of perseverance in faith, the rewards that await believers, and the call to pursue, promote, and persevere in their relationship with God.TakeawaysThis message is a message of encouragement.Believers may suffer, but it will be temporary.True wealth is not having money.Jesus recognizes the affliction and poverty of believers.Persecution can lead to the spread of the gospel.Faith should be the central aspect of our entire lives.Oppression breeds rebellion and curiosity about faith. The crown of life is a reward for faithfulness.Pursue God, promote God, persevere with God.The core of our faith should be centered on Jesus.
In the last Return of Christ Conference session, the focus turns to a hope that never disappoints. A hope anchored not in circumstances or emotion but in the unchanging promises of God. Drawing from Proverbs 13, Psalm 130, and the New Testament, Pastor Waxer reminds believers that while people and situations often let us down, God never will. Through Scripture, Biblical hope is not denial of suffering, but confident trust rooted in the faithfulness of God. Because salvation has been secured through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, believers possess a living hope - an imperishable inheritance given to us by God Himself. This hope enables us to wait, endure, and persevere, even when our present circumstances feel heavy or uncertain. Believers are called to live with expectancy, readiness, and watchfulness—not in fear or frantic anticipation, but in faithful obedience, moral clarity, and surrendered devotion. Readiness is not perfection, but presence—a heart aligned with God, hands faithfully stewarding what He has entrusted, and eyes lifted toward the coming King. This is a hope that will not let us down, as we echo the final prayer of Scripture: "Come, Lord Jesus."
Believers everywhere are under persecution like never before. How prepared do you feel to face danger or even death? What promises from God's Word would silence your fears and give you the courage you need? Rest in Jesus, who promised to never to leave or forsake us.
As the founder of a 37+ year business software company, John "JR" Rennie thought he was going to ride off into the sunset and retire. All that changed in 2015 when God decided to redirect him to his True Purpose. Promptings, new understandings and inspired guidance brought JR to founding the BrushFires Ministry. A ministry that helps other Believers discover their God Given Purpose and Destiny, just like God had led JR to his. During JR's professional career, he has benefited from his ability to build unified teams. JR took to heart the concept of discovering what you do well and hiring those that can do what you cannot do well. He created a program and toolset that allows Believers to discover their strengths and weaknesses. Once they have done this for themselves, then they can discover this for their family, friends and other ministry members. Did you know that the descendants of Ishmael have played a key role in helping the people of Israel? In this episode of the Curt Landry Podcast, Rabbi Curt is joined by special guest Dr. Faisal Malick, a former Muslim who shares his radical encounter with Jesus and God's heart to rescue, restore, and redeem the descendants of Ishmael. Ishmael means “God hears.” For thousands of years, wounded by the pain of fatherlessness, Muslim hearts have been crying out, and the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob hears them and is responding in glorious ways. The agenda of Islam cannot compete with God's vision for the Muslim people. They are not the enemy, but God's unfinished story. Join Rabbi Curt and Dr. Faisal Malick as they share the important distinction between the Muslim people and the Islamic religion that holds them hostage, highlighting passages in the Bible where the descendants of Ishmael were involved in helping key Jewish leaders. This is the hour of One New Man reconciliation, for Believers to arise and participate in God's prophetic rescue mission to bring Ishmael home.Dr. Malick's book, "Ishmael Returns: God's Vision vs. Islam's Agenda for Muslims," is available at https://www.faisalmalick.com or on Amazon.Connect with Dr. Faisal Malick on Instagram | @faisalmalick

Most believers underestimate how powerful spiritual discernment really is in the marketplace. I explain why hearing God clearly gives Christians an advantage others simply do not have, helping them ask the right questions, solve the right problems, and avoid costly mistakes. When you learn how to combine wisdom, humility, and spiritual sensitivity, you stop reacting to pressure and start leading with confidence and clarity wherever God has placed you. Guiding Question: How can believers remain faithful and passionate in their walk with Christ from beginning to end, especially when facing hardship, cultural opposition, or spiritual fatigue? Summary: In this powerful and pastoral message, the speaker challenges Christians not just to begin well in their faith journey but to finish strong. Drawing from 2 Timothy 4:1–8, the sermon highlights Paul's final exhortations to Timothy, urging him to preach the Word, endure hardship, fulfill his ministry, and do the work of an evangelist. It offers a contrast between faithful endurance and spiritual dropout, emphasizing the value of perseverance and commitment in a world eager to embrace falsehood over truth. The message is both a call to spiritual endurance and a warning against cultural myths that divert believers from the truth. Using stories, illustrations, and scriptural insight, the speaker paints a vivid picture of a life fully poured out in service to God—encouraging all believers to evaluate where they stand and recommit to a long obedience in the same direction. Outline: I. Starting Strong in Ministry (2 Timothy 4:1–2) Charge to preach the Word Be ready in and out of season Reprove, rebuke, exhort with great patience II. Challenges to Faithfulness (2 Timothy 4:3–4) The time will come when people reject sound doctrine Desire for “ear-tickling” teaching Accumulation of false teachers according to personal desires Turning aside to myths III. Call to Endure and Fulfill Your Ministry (2 Timothy 4:5) Be sober-minded Endure hardship Do the work of an evangelist Fulfill your ministry IV. Examples of Faithful Finishing (2 Timothy 4:6–8) Paul's life as a drink offering “I have fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith” Anticipation of the crown of righteousness V. Contrast Between Starters and Finishers Many start strong but fall away The difficulty of sustaining enthusiasm and discipline Cultural distractions and spiritual attrition VI. Application and Encouragement Personal reflection on spiritual growth and perseverance Avoiding superficial Christianity Staying excited about the faith and sharing the gospel Learning from older saints who have finished well Key Takeaways: Preaching the gospel is often hard and may lead to rejection, but we are still called to be faithful. Evangelism is work, not just an occasional event left to professionals. The Christian life requires endurance, especially when truth becomes inconvenient or unpopular. Our culture increasingly rejects sound doctrine in favor of comfort and self-justification. Many drop out of faith not for intellectual reasons but because they refuse to change their lifestyle. Paul serves as a model of finishing strong, having kept the faith through trials and ultimately receiving the reward. Believers should strive not only for a passionate start but for a lifelong commitment that finishes well. Scriptural References: 2 Timothy 4:1–8 Acts 14:19–20 (Paul stoned at Lystra) Jeremiah 5:30–31 (False prophets and people's delight in lies) Isaiah 8:19 (Warning against seeking mediums instead of God) Romans 12:1 (Living sacrifices) Philippians 3:12–14 (Pressing on toward the goal) Romans 1:25 (Exchanging the truth for a lie) Eugene Peterson's book: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction Recorded 2/22/81
In this passage, Peter teaches the church what true Christian living looks like in a broken and hostile world. The good life God promises is not built on retaliation, pride, or self-protection, but on Christ-shaped humility, unity, compassion, and sacrificial love. Believers are called to respond to evil with blessing, guard their words, turn away from sin, actively pursue peace, and reflect the heart of Christ in their relationships. This sermon highlights God's promise to watch over the righteous, hear their prayers, and bring justice in His perfect timing. As followers of Jesus, our daily conduct becomes a visible testimony of the transforming power of the gospel. ________________________________________ Links to Sermon Notes & Answers: ➤Sermon Notes (Blank): https://www.sheridanhills.org/_files/ugd/30fec2_c18d76aaad204376aa6bcca5f5bb2947.pdf ➤Sermon Notes (Answers): https://www.sheridanhills.org/_files/ugd/30fec2_92cf636f71574363bb1bd7cdc509b8e0.pdf ________________________________________ In this video: Review of previous sermons in series Main Points Application ________________________________________ Subscribe to this channel to catch weekly expositional sermons from the Bible. ________________________________________ Explore more sermons and information: https://www.sheridanhills.org/watch-new ________________________________________ Follow us: ➤Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sheridanhills/ ➤Twitter: https://twitter.com/sheridanhills01 ➤Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sheridanhills/
Biblical generosity begins not with money, but with God Himself – a God who is generous by nature and who created the world for His glory and our good. Because everything we have has been entrusted to us by God, we are not owners but stewards who are called to faithfulness, contentment, and trust rather than accumulation. Jesus taught often about money because our use of resources reveals our hearts. Believers are invited to invest their resources in God's work through joyful, intentional, and sacrificial giving, not under compulsion, but as an act of worship and spiritual maturity. At The Well, the ministry and mission of the local church are sustained entirely by the faithful generosity of individuals, handled with integrity and accountability. Generosity becomes a joyful response to grace as we participate in God's ongoing work in our church, our city, and the world. Speaker: Brad Bell
