Giovanni Masucci, export manager for Donnafugata wines and Arancini Afficionado, is in the house today and teaching us how to make baller (pun intended) arancini! Why the Pairing Works: This fresh, unoaked Nero d'Avola is super versatile with many foods, like pizza, Mexican, and even sweet & sour cuisine. The wine is both soft and fresh, with vibrant red fruits that pair perfectly with the fried delicious Sicilian balls of decadence, AKA arancini. Donnafugata Sherazade Tastes Like:

'Nobody thinks of wine as the villain in the climate story. But in fact we are.' So says When In Rome's Rob Malin, who spoke at COP26 about how shipping wine around the world in glass bottles leads to significant carbon emissions. 'We have to take this seriously because if we don't do something about climate change, you can forget a lot of your nice wine producing regions,' says Oli Purnell of canned wine startup The Copper Crew. WTAF stands, in this case, for Wine Traders for Alternative Formats (things like bag-in-box, pouches, bagnums, cans, kegs and plastic bottles). In this episode, we hear their impassioned case for building a more sustainable future for wine, citing figures showing glass bottles have nearly ten times worse carbon footprint than bag-in-box. Their secret weapon? Quality wines and new technology meaning no scrimping on drinking pleasure - while presenting a strong case for sustainability. We also get a sense of the overview from packaging experts WRAP. And along the way, we talk about featuring climate impact on labels, new ways to recycle plastic, cost savings of alt format wines, wastage, carbon tax...and Nero d'Avola on cornflakes.Featured in this episode are:- Rob Malin, When in Rome- Ollie Lea, The BIB Wine Company- Rich Hamblin, More Wine- Nik Darlington, Graft Wine- Oli Purnell, The Copper Crew- Adam Herriott, WRAPAs ever, show notes for this episode (including our 'alt format' wine recommendations) are on our website. I wholeheartedly endorse Ivy Liu, Jamilynn D'Avola and Lori Thompson for Colorado Springs School District 49 School Board. They oppose critical race theory and other divisive teachings and they support parental involvement in education. They will finally do something about the school district failing over 40 percent of children grades 3-6 in math proficiency in D49. It is time to focus on results, not funding. Here is my interview with these three incredible candidates. Please vote for them and spread the word.

Hi guys! Today I am discussing bariatric surgery. I cover the criteria for the surgery, the five types of surgery, the benefits and risks, the pre-surgical nutrition eval, nutritional impacts, the nutritional and medical management post-op, dumping syndrome, and the long-term nutrition and medical management. I end this episode with an example of an ADIME note for this particular patient as well. I loved covering this topic and I really recommend further research if you find this interesting!

About: Portland-based multimedia artist Veronica "Vern" Avola makes electronic music that combines a ferocious wall of sound with a deceptively subtle sense of dynamics. One could call it noise music, except that Avola puts enough into weirdly shifting harmonics as she does into abrasion. One could also call it drone, but Avola's approach to synth music is too rhythmic, itchy, and restless to fit easily under that label. She's shared bills with artists including Mammifer, Thrones, Big Business, The Tenses, Oxbow, Daniel Mehcne, Bana Hafar, and has collaborated with electro-pop eccentric EMA, to give you some idea of the difficulty of pigeonholing the project. She has been performing and touring in bands since 2005, and has been performing solo since 2008. She's had the honor of having several releases on labels such as Sige Recordings, Gravity Records, An Out Recordings, Accident Prone Records and Nadine Records, as well as releasing her most current works on her own label EMS Records. Grown on the side of a volcano, on an island in the heart of the Mediterranean, this wine shows the finesse of elevation, the unique minerality of volcanic soil, and the heart of a culture that has roots extending back hundreds of years. The wine this week is red, deep, rich and as full of history as it is of flavor! Grown by a family who have been raising grapes in the same soil for close to three centuries, this unique varietal is grown almost no where else in the world. The wine is as unique as it is expressive, and a fantastic introduction to a wine growing region that is only going to become more and more important in the next few years as the world discovers what has been in front of them all along!Join Christi & Alex this week as they Drink Something Amazing!
When in 1998 the very first vintage of Morgante's Don Antonio was poured in the glasses of wine lovers all over the world, it got an extraordinary success in a very short time thanks to its impeccable quality. Among the first wines from Nero d'Avola to become famous beyond the borders of Sicily, after many years the charm and excellence of Don Antonio remain a flagship wine for the whole Italian enology.
Frappato is an indigenous grape found in Sicily that is usually blended with Nera D' Avola. It is a medium bodied, red wine that is full of tart cherry, plum and pertol. I am going to have to pump the breaks on this one. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mo-wine/support

Want to remember what life was like pre-COVID? Tune into this episode (recorded in early March) with screenwriter Richard Smith as the Hollywood Uncorked panel engages in forbidden activity like sitting face-to-face, sharing several bottles of Italian Nero d’Avola, and wantonly leaving the house. Along the way they talk about Smith’s screenwriting career, which got off to an auspicious start when his very first film project, Leonard, went from British short to premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. This was followed by his feature-length writing debut, Trauma, starring Colin Firth, as well as Smith’s latest project, The Garden of Evening Mists, based on the acclaimed Malaysian novel and currently rolling out across HBO platforms in Asia.

In England’s distant past, long before the spread of wealth and the explosive growth of the middle classes, holidays were a rarity. Overseas holidays were unheard of, except for those gilded few who’d grown fat on the Empire and took a ‘grand tour’ of Europe for months at a time, or else went off to add new lands to said Empire. The closest most workers got to any kind of holiday was being taken in a charabanc to the nearest seaside resort, where enforced fun would be had on piers stretching out into coastal waters. One of the highlights of such a visit would be an end-of-the-pier show, where metropolitan idols would perform song-and-dance, music hall routines for the masses. The shows were often billed as Summertime Specials. In the world of the Small Data Forum podcast, this latest episode – 28 already – is our equivalent of an end of the pier show, our very own Summertime Special. As regular listeners will know, Thomas, Neville, and Sam don’t meet together IRL all that often. But in a tradition stretching back – ooh – as long as last December, last week we three braved metaphorical thunder, lightning, and rain to meet again at our favourite pre-pod haunt, Olivelli in the Cut, Waterloo, London. Suitably stoked by pizza, pasta, and a surprisingly modest couple of bottles of Nero d’Avola, we set about our task of looking at the uses and abuses of data big and small in business, politics, and public life. But for only the third time in the three years we’ve been recording the podcast, we did it in person. Continue reading -> https://www.smalldataforum.com/
The Epicuro Nero D'Avola 2017 is a $5.99 Trader Joe's import exclusive sourced from vineyards in Sicily. Nero D'Avola is THE Red grape of Sicily, the Nero translates to dark or black (in the old days Red wine grapes were referred to as "blacks") and D'Avola means "of Avola" which is a coastal town in Sicily. Epicuro is Trader Joe's brand that features interesting affordable wines from Italy and Sicily, I noticed a Primitivo (same grape as Zinfandel) from the Puglia region (the boot heel of Italy) along with several others, all in the same price range). Nero D'Avola is usually a rich, full-bodied wine (something along the lines of Syrah) with ample tannins, which is not the usual profile for a $5.99 wine. Nero D'Avola wines are rarely expensive, you will find plenty retailing for under $20. The alcohol content is a rather mild for a full-bodied wine, 12.5%. The color is dark, barely see-thru magenta red. The nose is sweet strawberry hard candy, black licorice, a little herb, a touch of spice, and black pepper. This is a smooth, medium-bodied wine, with bright fruit and sleek tannins. It starts with cherry (almost cherry cough drops), a brush of herbs, and cranberry. Most of what is happening with this wine happens upfront, but the mid-palate does add some ripe raspberry and interesting spice. The tannins are in the mix, they do not pull or bite, but they let you know that they are there. The acidity is on the mild side, I would think this Nero D'Avola is more of a sipping wine than a food wine, but it will do fine with pizza and burgers. The finish starts out strong, then fades before too long. The Epicuro Nero D'Avola 2017 is a pretty decent $5.99 Red wine. It is good enough to make me think about exploring Nero D'Avola in the $10 and above range, if the Epicuro does this well at 6 bucks, the more expensive stuff may really be something. The more the wine in my glass opens up, the richer and fuller the flavors, I gave the bottle a half hour to come together after I popped the top and I aerated the bottle and it still took additional time to hit its peak. Give the Epicuro Nero D'Avola 2017 enough time and it will offer a very nice budget glass of wine.

In this episode Deb and Maria discuss Theory of Mind and it's involvement in Speech Pathology.1:27 Maria is feeling toasty. We sipped on Colosi Nero D'avola 2016. Maria loved it! Both Deb and Maria voted drink it. It's from Sicily, Italy.Nero d’Avola is one of the full-bodied wines of the world in the same boldness as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and Syrah.Primary flavors come from the grape variety itselfSecondary flavors come from winemaking and fermentationTertiary flavors come from aging (most typically from oak barrels or oxidation)This wine pairs well with meat, shellfish, and aged cheese. We ate manchego cheese and Deb also made some shrimp fra diavolo with Mike's famous Recine Brother's Tomato Sauce! YUMWe chatted about Schrödinger's cat:Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. It illustrates what he saw as the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to everyday objects. Here's the story: A cat is locked up in a steel chamber, along with the following device (which must be secured against direct interference by the cat): in a Geiger counter, there is a tiny bit of radioactive substance, so small, that perhaps in the course of the hour one of the atoms decays, but also, with equal probability, perhaps none; if it happens, the counter tube discharges and through a relay releases a hammer that shatters a small flask of hydrocyanic acid. If one has left this entire system to itself for an hour, one would say that the cat still lives if meanwhile no atom has decayed. The psi-function of the entire system would express this by having in it the living and dead cat (pardon the expression) mixed or smeared out in equal parts. Finally we get to Theory of Mind: The theory that people have ideas, desires, and motivations that are diverging. Many people on the Autism spectrum often struggle to understand that other people have their own plans, thoughts, and points of view. This causes them to have difficulty understanding other people's beliefs, attitudes, and emotions. This impacts their ability to relate and communicate. We also get into anxiety and neurotransmitters for some reason. Then we get back on track with theory of mind and talk about false truth tests!Listen in to find out how theory of mind can impact kids on your caseload in the classroom setting.Muah! Sicily is know more for than it's beautiful scenery and the Godfather. This island also produces tons of a wine. In fact, it's the three largest producer of wine behind the Veneto and Emilia Romagna regions. In terms of red wine, Nero d'Avola is Sicily's crown jewel of dry, food friendly wines. Brought over over by the ancient Greeks, "Black of Avola" has been a staple of Sicilian wine for centuries and the subject of this episode.

Meet sommelier Aaron Von Rock. Aaron was born in Maryland and had his first experience with wine at the age of three, stomping Concord grapes along with his siblings for the family’s homemade wine. Aaron’s first job in the field was at a barely legal age buying wines for the Baltimore Hotel, where he was introduced to fine wines. At Lincoln Ristorante, Aaron Von Rock has developed a 400-bottle, Italian list with general manager Paolo Novello. The wine list hopes to remove the distance from vineyard to table by making the selections accessible and telling the story of select vineyards and bottlings. The wine program is built to parallel and complement the cuisine of Chef Jonathan Benno, both with classical and cutting-edge selections. The cocktail menu is also curated by Aaron and highlights Italian traditional liqueurs and products in classic drink recipes. Tune in to this week’s episode of In the Drink as host Joe Campanele chats with Aaron about “Nero d’Avola face”, Negroni bars and extensive wine tastings. This program was sponsored by S. Wallace Edwards & Sons. “The sommelier industry has grown quite a bit. When I got into the business there wasn’t an intuitive direction for anybody.” [02:00] –Aaron Von Rock on In the Drink
Another special, mid-week podcast for Wine Blogging Wednesday featuring the red wines of Sicily. I have selected three wines made from the native Nero d’Avola grape for another live, “virtual tasting”. I also share a bit of background on Sicilian wine. Wines tasted: - Firriato, “Chiaramonte”, Nero d’Avola 2002 ($12) Dark ruby color, beautiful, intense black cherry nose, fresh black cherry fruit with moderate tannins and a bit of acidity; a nice food wine. Delicious. Score: 9/10 - Morgante, Nero d’Avola 2003 ($11) Ruby color, earthy black cherry nose, a little musty, black cherry fruit and medium tannins. Very good. Score: 8/10 - Colosi, Dry Red Wine 2002 ($7) Medium ruby color, musty plum and wild cherry nose, plum and wild cherry flavors and moderate tannins. Very good. Score: 8/10
Today's show is a special edition for Wine Blogging Wednesday #7 whose theme is, "Obscure Red Grape Varieties". Thanks to Andrew Barrow of Spittoon for inviting me to participate as the first podcaster to join the fun of WBW! I had to stoop down quite a bit at some wine stores here in Minneapolis as I looked for varietals I had never heard of, let alone tried. I ended up picking 4 wines for tasting, all for $8 USD or less. Unfortunately, one of the wines was disqualified as it was a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvugnon and Merlot; my full tasting notes of that wine are posted here. What was great about this theme was it forced me to look for things I normally pass by at the wine store and I would have otherwise never found any of these interesting wines: - Castellani, Negroamaro, Puglia, Italy 2003 ($6) - Deep garnet, dusty berry nose, simple, peppery berry flavors somewhat like Dolchetto, good rustic finish with moderate tannins, nice pizza or pasta wine, very good value, plastic cork! Score: 8/10 - Castellani, Nero d’Avola, Sicilia, Italy 2003 ($7) - Garnet, pleasant fresh berry nose, deep, simple black cherry flavors, no tannins to speak of, good “quaffable” drinking now, another plastic cork! Score: 7/10 - Cortello, Estremadura, Portugal 2001 ($8) - Made from native grape Castelao (a.k.a. Periquita) and Argonez grapes; deepest garnet, lean berry nose, round plum flavors and silky mouth-feel, finishes a little bitter and funky but overall quite good. Score: 7.5/10 Best of tasting and best value goes to Castellani Negroamaro 2003. I will be looking for this variety from other producers in the future to share on Winecast. Thanks once again to Andrew from Spittoon for the invitation; I am looking forward to WBW #8!
