In this episode of “Kimberly's Italy,” co-hosts Kimberly Holcombe and Tommaso Il Favoloso take listeners on a journey through the lesser-known yet captivating regions of Puglia, Basilicata, and Campania, uncovering their unique cultural and geographical features. Puglia: Geography and Features: Nestled between the Adriatic and Ionian seas, Puglia is known for its unique terra rosa soil, abundant olive trees, and renowned wines such as Primitivo and Negroamaro. Cuisine and Climate: The region boasts a vegetable-centric cuisine, diverse climate, and provides a refreshing alternative to the summer heat of Rome. Key Destinations: Highlights include the Gargano promontory, Bari, Ostuni, Lecce, and Santa Maria de Leuca. The iconic trulli houses are now popular accommodations. Basilicata: Historical Context and Terrain: Famous for its mountainous landscape, Basilicata has undergone several name changes, including Lucania under Mussolini. Cultural Highlights: Matera, recognized as a European Capital of Culture in 2019, is famed for its unique sassi cave dwellings. Visitor Tips: Despite lacking an airport, the region offers warm welcomes in its small villages. Potenza is noted for its narrow roads and parking challenges, while Maratea charms visitors with its scenic appeal. Local Wines and Cuisine: The region's wines, Malantrina and Aglianco, pair excellently with local meats and bread. Campania: Cultural Hub: Known for its stunning coastline, Campania is also home to Napoli, the birthplace of pizza and a gateway to Capri, Ischia, Procida, and the Amalfi Coast. Attractions and Planning: Notable sites include the Reggia di Caserta, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. The Amalfi Coast, with its picturesque villages such as Positano and Amalfi, requires careful planning to navigate high prices and crowds. Climate and History: The region benefits from a sunny climate, and south of Salerno you can visit the ancient ruins in Paestum. Coastal Challenges: The islands are full of rocky shores which make for somewhat challenging entries for non-local swimmers! Follow us on Social Media Instagram Facebook  Join Kimberly and Tommaso as they delve into these regions, providing travel tips and cultural insights for an enriching Italian adventure.

Welcome to Episode 1686 in which host Giulia Stocchetti interviews Gilles Coffi Degboe this week on The Next Generation where young Italian wine people 30 and under shake up the wine scene. More about today's guest Gilles Coffi Degboe (Coffi is his first name and means "Friday") was born in Benin, a tiny strip of land located in the western part of Africa, between Nigeria and Togo. In 1994, because of his father's wishes, he moved to Bologna with his family. Gilles met wine when he was a teenager, working at the restaurant Albergo "Da Marino," in Rufina (Località Masseto), an establishment run by people his father already knew before their arrival in Italy, who later became great family friends. During this experience Gilles sipped his first goblet of Sangiovese, a goblet that created in him a curiosity about the scents of wine, its anecdotes and stories. Curiosity that then led him to begin a real journey into the world of wine. His studies began at the Pellegrino Artusi Higher Education Institute, where he also had the opportunity to attend the first level of the sommelier course organized by AIS Romagna. His first work experience abroad was in China, in Beijing, a city where, during the 2008 Olympics, he worked at Casa Italia for the C.O.N.I. (Italian National Olympic Committee). In 2012 Gilles decided to return to Emilia Romagna and complete his Sommelier studies. Shortly thereafter, the school at which he completed his studies offered him to work as a lecturer in Restaurant service -Bartending, Cafeteria and Enology. He still lectures today, alongside his work as a consultant. Gilles was until 2023 the first and only Ambassador of the Negroamaro grape variety in Italy, Europe and the World. He also has the title of Ambassador of Albana, a typical grape variety of Emilia-Romagna. She has 360° experience in the cellar, harvesting, tasting and teaching. Bernie Orsi and Rusty Eddy from Orsi Family Vineyards join Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. Rusty Eddy’s brother is Tom Eddy, the winemaker. Rusty does public relations for the winery. Tom Eddy has a long history as a winemaker. He graduated from UC Davis in 1975 and first worked for Wente. He has had a label of his own since 1991. They taste a 1994 Cabernet that Tom Eddy made. The grapes are from the Dr. Crane vineyard. Rusty describes a “vertical” tasting, of Tom Eddy wines, meaning one from each year 1991-1996 then six more. This 1994 is still in good shape. Dan says that in the warmer regions, the acid is not always in perfect condition, in Cabernets. 1994 was warmer, so riskier, and probably the 1995s are in better shape. But Cabernet just needs time to develop. Orsi Vineyards is unique as a California grower of many Italian varietals, which are so abundant all over Italy but which are hardly known at all in California due to the dominance of the principal French varietals (the "usual suspects" being Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir, as well as Sauvignon Blanc). Orsi Vineyards features Sangiovese, Aglianico, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, Fiano, Barbera, Negroamaro, Sagrantino, Schioppettino, Primitivo and Biancolella. They also grow some Cabernet, which is also grown in Italy. These are all ready to be discovered by wine consumers who are only familiar with the other more common grape varieties. Orsi Vineyards started with Bernie Orsi purchased a vineyard in 1990. It was in Healdsburg and was a cattle ranch. They looked into the possibility of planting grapes and were advised against it because of soil types, etc. Someone suggested he visit Rich Kunde who was growing grapes. He said there is no undesirable place to grow grapes and there was a rootstock for any soil. He decided that “4453” rootstock from France does well in the high magnesium soils in there area. Dan asks how he came up with the Italian varieties. In 1992 or 3 he had the largest planting of 4453 rootstock, Cabernet, Chardonnay and Merlot. He found them boring. He was always fascinated traveling to Italy and found the wine excellent and he noticed you could drink it with a meal and still walk away unimpaired. He went to Ischia, off the coast of Naples, where his grandmother came from. She left in 1916, same time Steve’s grandparents left. (The family ended up in San Pedro, California, because they were fishermen.) He encountered a wine in Ischia and it turned out to be Biancolella d’Ischia. The Ischians say it is unique to their island. It went well with fish and shellfish. He wanted to import the vines so he contacted some commercial grapevine importers. He learned that they were studying two or three Biancolella plants at UC Davis, for research into pest and disease resistance. About 5 or 6 years ago he planted some, then soon after he also planted other Italian varieties, including Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Negroamaro and others. These varietals have their own characteristics unlike the familiar French-named varietals that are more common in California. Dan tastes a lemon flavor in the Biancolella. “This is delicious!” says Steve. “…freshness, a little minerality in the finish, bright, clean and crisp,” says Dan. Despite the genealogy of grapes which cross national borders, the local growers, by tradition, are proud of their local varieties and take care to maintain the production and quality of any of them. They also have a Fiano to taste. Usually southern wines are “harder” but this is delicate. These wines like Biancolella and Fiano do not travel well and are hard or impossible to find here. They are best when they are tasted fresh, close to home, and this one is. The 1980 bottle was spoiled because it was oxidized, so Dan said, when that happens you just move on. Schioppettino is an Italian variety (pronounced “skyo-pett-EE-no” with a K sound) in Italian.

Dawn,T, Red, M and Alpha review Cinderella Ate My Daughter. Alpha and T interview some test subjects and see if the "girlie-girl" culture has devoured them. Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture Written by: Peggy Orenstein  Narrated by: Peggy Orenstein   Length: 6 hrs and 12 mins   Unabridged  Audiobook  Release Date: 06-12-12   Publisher: HarperAudio  Pink and pretty or predatory and hardened, sexualized girlhood influences our daughters from infancy onward, telling them that how a girl looks matters more than who she is. Somewhere between the exhilarating rise of Girl Power in the 1990s and today, the pursuit of physical perfection has been recast as a source - the source - of female empowerment. And commercialization has spread the message faster and farther, reaching girls at ever-younger ages.  But, realistically, how many times can you say no when your daughter begs for a pint-size wedding gown or the latest Hannah Montana CD? And how dangerous is pink and pretty anyway - especially given girls' successes in the classroom and on the playing field? Being a princess is just make-believe, after all; eventually they grow out of it. Or do they? Does playing Cinderella shield girls from early sexualization - or prime them for it? Could today's little princess become tomorrow's sexting teen? And what if she does? Would that make her in charge of her sexuality - or an unwitting captive to it?  Those questions hit home with Peggy Orenstein, so she went sleuthing. She visited Disneyland and the international toy fair, trolled American Girl Place and Pottery Barn Kids, and met beauty pageant parents with preschoolers tricked out like Vegas showgirls. She dissected the science, created an online avatar, and parsed the original fairy tales. The stakes turn out to be higher than she - or we - ever imagined: nothing less than the health, development, and futures of our girls. From premature sexualization to the risk of depression to rising rates of narcissism, the potential negative impact of this new girlie-girl culture is undeniable - yet armed with awareness and recognition, parents can effectively counterbalance its influence in their daughters' lives.  Cinderella Ate My Daughter is a must-read for anyone who cares about girls, and for parents helping their daughters navigate the rocky road to adulthood. Dominic Hentall Sangiovese Negroamaro IGT Puglia 2014    Our Take: Great wine with or without any pairing.  Sangiovese Negroamaro IGT Puglia 2014 Dark violet intense color, with cherry and peppery nose from the Sangiovese and a violet floral elegance from the Negroamaro. This wine delivers a refreshing tanginess with a bit of zip. Dom sourced the finest grapes using Angel funding - and used his know-how to get them for the right price. It's all about who you know, you know! A unique southern Italian red that will have tongues wagging in delight about its natural deliciousness and near-effervesence. Food suggestions red meat dishes. Bill and I consider what may become of the tipping tradition in America's restaurants. The ever widening wage gap between front of the house restaurant employees and back of the house workers, pending government mandated wage increases and uncertainty of the direction in which current immigration policy may head, makes operating a restaurant, risky business indeed. Is restaurateur Danny Meyer a maverick altruist or does he have a crystal ball, has seen the future and is preparing for the changes. Richard Jennings a Silicon Valley based wine blogger took over a year off from blogging and on his return has hit it out of the park, with a comprehensive review of 230 grocery store Chardonnays. He didn't just pick up his free samples at the UPS depot. He did the hard work, trekking to local Lucky, Safeway and Costco stores to purchase bottles. Yes, he spent $4,000 of his own hard earned cash to complete the project.  If you shop for Chardonnay at the grocery store this is a must read. But wait, there's more. He's currently working on a grocery store Cabernet project. You can follow his progress on Cellartracker, Facebook and Twitter. If you're a cheese lover Tia Keenan wants to introduce us to some of the wonderful products that are made here in the United States as well as from abroad.Former owner of now defunct wine retailer Premier Cru looks to be headed to court again. This time the claimant will be Wells Fargo, who is looking to reclaim the 2016 ZO6 Corvette he purchased this year shortly before he declared bankruptcy. Wine of the week: 2012 Tormaresca Torcicoda Primitivo Salento IGT Primitivo is a clone of a Croatian grape called Crljenak Kastelanski ( tsril/ yeh/ nak- kah/ steh/ lahn/ skee. Practice this pronunciation and you can wow your friends at your next gathering. You could also use it on that overbearing wine snob at your next mixer to get them to back off. Simplified, Primitivo is Italian Zinfandel. The Tormaresca Estate is operated under the umbrella of the Antinori Family. Winemaker Renzo Cotarella has the best of everything at his disposal all with the goal of showing the world, the best that the region of Puglia, in southern Italy has to offer. The flagship wine for Tormaresca is their 100% Negroamaro based Masseria Maime. Don't miss an opportunity to try it.  Topped with a real cork, Torcicoda is 100% Primitivo and is fermented in stainless steel, then aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels for ten months. The wine rest in bottle another eight months until release. In the glass the wine is a deep ruby to violet colorand the nose shows black plums, black cherries, brown sugar and vanilla. In the mouth the flavors turn to red cherry jam and cocoa with hints of licorice and baking spice. Full bodied with ample well rounded tannins it finishes with good length. Drawing a comparison between Torcicoda and Sonoma Zinfandels, I'd say that this Primitivo is a more feminine representation of the Zinfandel grape, showing less alcohol, more savory flavors and elegance. I tasted the 2013 version alongside the 2012 and the former underperformed, so I suggest you confine your search to the 2012 version. Another reminder that vintage does matter.  14.5 % abv $17 - $20

Today's show is a special edition for Wine Blogging Wednesday #7 whose theme is, "Obscure Red Grape Varieties". Thanks to Andrew Barrow of Spittoon for inviting me to participate as the first podcaster to join the fun of WBW! I had to stoop down quite a bit at some wine stores here in Minneapolis as I looked for varietals I had never heard of, let alone tried. I ended up picking 4 wines for tasting, all for $8 USD or less. Unfortunately, one of the wines was disqualified as it was a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvugnon and Merlot; my full tasting notes of that wine are posted here. What was great about this theme was it forced me to look for things I normally pass by at the wine store and I would have otherwise never found any of these interesting wines: - Castellani, Negroamaro, Puglia, Italy 2003 ($6) - Deep garnet, dusty berry nose, simple, peppery berry flavors somewhat like Dolchetto, good rustic finish with moderate tannins, nice pizza or pasta wine, very good value, plastic cork! Score: 8/10 - Castellani, Nero d’Avola, Sicilia, Italy 2003 ($7) - Garnet, pleasant fresh berry nose, deep, simple black cherry flavors, no tannins to speak of, good “quaffable” drinking now, another plastic cork! Score: 7/10 - Cortello, Estremadura, Portugal 2001 ($8) - Made from native grape Castelao (a.k.a. Periquita) and Argonez grapes; deepest garnet, lean berry nose, round plum flavors and silky mouth-feel, finishes a little bitter and funky but overall quite good. Score: 7.5/10 Best of tasting and best value goes to Castellani Negroamaro 2003. I will be looking for this variety from other producers in the future to share on Winecast. Thanks once again to Andrew from Spittoon for the invitation; I am looking forward to WBW #8!
