Grade were a key part of Victory Records' late-90s surge, blending hardcore intensity with emotional depth and forward-leaning songwriting. Their music felt restless and urgent, pushing beyond genre lines without losing the raw energy that defined the scene. Releases like Under the Radar and Headfirst Straight to Hell helped bridge hardcore, post-hardcore, and early emo influences at a pivotal moment. Though their time was brief, Grade left a lasting imprint on the Victory era by proving heaviness and vulnerability could coexist. This week on the Science for Sport Podcast, Richard Graves is joined by Brian Roy, a strength and conditioning coach who has spent the past decade working at the sharp end of action and lifestyle sports, including Olympic BMX Freestyle. BMX Freestyle is still a relative newcomer to the Olympic programme, but its physical demands, injury risks and performance challenges are unlike almost any traditional sport. In this episode, Brian shares his unconventional journey into elite sport, from personal training and postgraduate study to travelling the world with BMX athletes on the global stage. Together, Richard and Brian explore what it really takes to prepare athletes for a sport defined by explosive power, aerial skill, high-impact landings and constant travel. Brian offers a refreshingly honest perspective on athlete buy-in, bespoke programming, and why traditional strength testing and rigid systems don't always transfer to non-traditional sports. This is a fascinating conversation for sports scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, and anyone interested in how performance support adapts when the sport doesn't fit neatly into a textbook. In this episode you will learn * The unique physiological and biomechanical demands of BMX Freestyle competition * How to prepare athletes for repeated 60-second, maximal-effort runs across a full competition day * Why traditional strength testing and gym-based metrics don't always translate to action sports * How Brian adapted training around constant travel, limited gym access, and athlete preferences * Practical strategies for building resilience and reducing injury risk in high-impact sports * Why athlete buy-in often comes from listening, adapting, and being present rather than enforcing systems * How emerging video and motion-analysis technology could shape the future of training in BMX Freestyle and similar sports About Brian Roy Brian Roy is a strength and conditioning coach with over 10 years' experience working in action and lifestyle sports. He holds a Master's degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science and is currently undertaking further postgraduate study in Applied Sports Science Analytics. Brian has worked closely with elite BMX Freestyle athletes on the international stage, including those competing at the Olympic Games, and has developed a reputation for adaptable, athlete-centred training approaches. His work focuses on performance, resilience, and real-world transfer rather than rigid adherence to traditional testing models. Brian regularly shares insights from his work on LinkedIn and Instagram, where he discusses training philosophy, emerging technology, and lessons learned from working in non-traditional sports environments.

This episode is a special one. Jason Rushforth—better known to us as Uncle J of Rushforth Wheels—he is not just a guest, he's family. Our friendship goes back decades, rooted in BMX, built through hard work, and strengthened by a shared love for creativity, craftsmanship, and doing things the right way. From the early BMX days to building some of the most iconic wheels in the hot rod and custom car world, Jason's journey is a true reflection of passion meeting perseverance. We talk about where it all started, how BMX shaped our work ethic, the evolution into hot rods and high-end wheels, and the relationships that matter most along the way. This conversation is about more than cars—it's about loyalty, legacy, and growing together through every chapter. December 21, 2025 | Speaker: Jason Coker | Scripture: Isaiah 7:10-16 Episode Summary In this final week before Christmas, Jason Coker continues our Advent series by exploring the tension between our desire for control and the "slow work" of God. Drawing from the story of King Ahaz in Isaiah 7, Jason illustrates how we often cloak our lack of faith in religious language when we are afraid. Through a nostalgic story about a hidden BMX bike and the visceral imagery of pregnancy, this message challenges us to trust that God's promises are gestating even when we can't see them. Ultimately, we are reminded that the name Immanuel is a promise that God is with us not just in the destination, but in the long, often painful process of waiting. Key Takeaways The Illusion of Control: Just as we wrap gifts to show the recipient they aren't in control of the grace they receive, God's timing is independent of our efforts to force a "quick fix" salvation. Trusting the "Slow Work": Quoting Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Jason emphasizes that God's purposes often move at the pace of a pregnancy—slowly, involving both signs of hope and periods of discomfort. The Trap of False Piety: We see in King Ahaz how easy it is to use "spiritual" excuses to avoid truly trusting God, opting instead to rely on our own power and political alliances. Presence Over Rescue: The salvation God offers may not be the immediate rescue we want, but it is the presence we need—the "God with us" who remains through the dark, the waiting, and the fulfillment. Memorable Quotes “Wrapping presents is a kind of symbolic way of demonstrating that you are disconnected from control of the very good things that you receive. That's how grace works.” “Always trust in the slow work of God.” — Pierre Teilhard de Chardin “My imagination when I appeal to God is so impoverished compared to what God actually delivers.” “God is with us in the pregnancy of God's promises, God is with us in the deliverance, and God is with us in the raising up and the maturing of those promises.” Resources This Weekly Sermon Podcast is A Production of The Oceanside Sanctuary Church in Oceanside California. Saya Sakakibara and her brother Kai grew up competing in BMX racing, starting when her family moved to Japan. When they relocated back to Sydney, the pair quickly rose through the ranks, winning a slew of state and national titles between them. No stranger to accidents while competing, Saya had suffered a number of concussions herself before Kai was involved in a serious accident in 2020. It left him with a life-changing traumatic brain injury, and Saya with a crippling fear of getting back on the bike. In this episode, Saya details the strong bond she and Kai formed through BMX, how her fear of competing grew over the years and how she found a renewed passion and purpose to return to competition, winning Gold at the Paris Olympic Games and becoming World Champion three years running. It was October 2012 in the quiet town of Clayton, New Jersey, when a 12-year-old girl climbed onto her prized BMX bike and rode off into the fading daylight. She promised to be home by her usual 8PM curfew. But as the hours stretched on and the porch light burned, there was no sign of her return.SPONSORS -Air Doctor: Get noticeably cleaner & healthier air with up to $300 off with promo code “MORBIDOLOGY” at: https://airdoctorpro.comSHOW NOTES - https://morbidology.com/morbidology-podcast/PATREON - https://www.patreon.com/morbidologyYOUTUBE: https://youtube.com/morbidologyBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/morbidology--3527306/support.

Lando Steezy (Leo Smith) has one of the rawest and most inspiring stories we've ever had on The Ride Companion. From growing up homeless, losing family members, watching friends fall into crime and addiction and nearly going down the same path himself, to discovering BMX and eventually becoming one of the most recognisable and influential riders in UK mountain biking, his journey is unreal. In this episode, Lando opens up about his turbulent childhood in Macclesfield, the moment that changed his life at 14, the friends he lost along the way, and how riding became his escape and ultimately his purpose. He talks about the first viral TikTok that blew up overnight, nearly turning down an Anthill Films shoot because he didn't know who they were, and how his partner pushed him back onto social media when he'd lost the love. We dig into representation in MTB, the crossover between wheelie culture and mountain biking, his creative work outside of riding, the grief and anxiety he's learned to manage, and why gravel bikes have become such a big part of his life. This is one of the most honest and powerful conversations we've recorded and we're massively grateful to Lando for being so open. We hope you enjoy the episode.
