For our first full episode recorded and released in 2025, we wanted to start things off with a bang, so we watched the sequel to a love-it-or-hate-it film, except this time around most non-John Waters/Quentin Tarantino folks seemed to just hate it. That's right, it's the further adventures of that notorious clown prince of stair dancing, the Jokester, in... Joker: Folie à Deux, the film that got the lowest Cinemascore EVER for a "superhero movie." Well, here we.... go! Joker: Folie à Deux - the sequel to the polarizing but smash hit Joker - has now hit theaters. it's not secret at this point that Todd Phillips and his team had no intention of making a sequel to the first film but Academy Awards, including one for Joaquin Phoenix himself, and a billion-dollar box office run started to turn some heads over at Warner Bros. This is why I've always been very concerned about this sequel, despite still being a BIG fan of that first movie. The trailers certainly looked impressive but my concerns from a story perspective were not swayed. All that being said, the divisive reactions honestly had me so intrigued to go check this one out. I had the pleasure (I guess?) of seeing this one yesterday so let's discuss whether Joker: Folie à Deux is as good as the first film, in spoiler-free fashion! Joker: Folie à Deux: Directed by: Todd Phillips Written by: Scott Silver & Todd Phillips Based on characters created by: Bob Kane & Bill Finger & Jerry Robinson 'Harley Quinn' created by: Paul Dini & Bruce Timm Produced by: Joseph Garner, Todd Phillips, Emma Tillinger Koskoff Executive Producers: Pete Chiappetta, Mark Friedberg, George Kacandes, Andrew Lary, Jason Ruder, Scott Silver, Anthony Tittanegro, Michael E. Twenty years ago, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland helped revitalize the zombie subgenre with this seminal post-apocalyptic thriller produced on a shoe-string budget....even though the story isn't technically about zombies. Nope this is the actually story of a fictional pandemic which strikes the UK known as the "Rage" virus.....society becomes gradually wiped out by those who are "infected" which can basically be described as FAST zombies who spew blood which spreads the infection. And at the core of this story is an aimless bike messenger (Cillian Murphy) who was actually in a coma during the first 28 days of this pandemic and a resourceful survivor who he teams up with played by Naomie Harris. Brendan Gleason and Chris Eccleston also co-star as fellow survivors of this outbreak.Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

notes on a recording: All the way back in episode 0045, titled "Music to my Ears" I talked with Derek Richmond from the band DROPOUTS for the first time. Well, he's back and top of that DROPOUTS have a new album, Off the Leash (2022), that is now available on Spotify. What's really cool about this album is that they used a different lead guitarist for each of their songs. How cool is that! Derek also shares his inspiration behind their album cover. In this week's bonus episode we get into a ton of stuff. Not only does Derek come by to talk about his three favorite films of the year (All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, and Banshees of Inisherin) but he shares a story about his time at Pretty Bird and DANIELS (Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert). We begin our episode talking about the director duo, hot off 11 Academy Award nominations for their film "Everything Everywhere All At Once." This leads us to Derek's top 3, and in no particular ranking. I haven't talked about Edward Burger's All Quiet on the Western Front on the show yet. I watched it recently and was deeply moved and disturbed about the content of human callousness. It is a beautifully shot, gruesome and de-moralizing World War 1 epic that reminds me of a cross between "1917" and "Saving Private Ryan." This is a German film that can be found on Netflix. Next up, we talk another film that I haven't talked much about on the show, "The Batman." A film just as dark and gritty as the aforementioned WWI film, this was one of the best adaptations of the character I have ever seen. It reminded me a lot of the golden age of Batman comics in the late 80s, early 90s. I find out in this episode, that Derek collects comic books, so I see how he comes to appreciate the Matt Reeves film from a comics perspective and with an understanding of Batman as a detective. This film really captures the feel of some of the darker stories like Jeph Loeb's "The Long Halloween" and Frank Miller's Batman Year One. This one is also on HBO MAX. His last film in the top 3, "Banshees of Inisherin," which has made most of my guests top films of the year lists. If you haven't seen this film about the end of a friendship, hop on over to HBO MAX, because this film is seriously good despite it's deceptively simple premise. Of course, we shoutout the great performances from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleason, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon-- these performances alone is reason enough to watch Martin McDonagh's well-written tale. And lastly, before the show's wrap up Derek gets into some honorable mentions (and one dishonorable mention) that include: Dio: Dreamers Never Die, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Northman, Hustle, and Emily the Criminal. Definitely, take a listen to this episode to get our full thoughts on and all these films! Now: off to the next film! Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host's -- J. Carlos Menjivar -- attempt to watch 1001 movies before he dies. A lover of lists and film, Carlos is a firm believer that all film lists should be tackled with one goal in mind: completion. Steven Jay Schneider's "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" is the subject of this podcast. Each episode features one guest and five movies from the massive list, compiled into themed lists by the host. Guests each week will select one category without any prior knowledge as to what films are included. Once a category is chosen, Carlos reveals the five films and the viewing begins. The guests then come on Dial F for Film via Zoom and the discussion begins.
Joe and Jared go deep and personal on the heavy themes found in The Banshees of Inisherin and dig up some nuggets of wisdom we can all profit from. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason's characters both inspire and confuse in this quietly turbulent film. It is a must-see movie and this discussion is a must-listen episode.
The Banshees of Inisherin is a dark comedy from Writer-Director Martin McDonagh Starring Colin Farell and Brendan Gleason, Armageddon Time is an autobiographical film from James Gray Starring Anne Hathaway, Jermey Strong and Anthony Hopkins, I'm Talking about both films on this podcast Enjoy!

Part 4.2 of IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT (AND I WANT WINE) Enough Tom Cruise talk, let's get down on this NZ Malbec! What is Jamie's personal single-serving size for wine? How long does it take for anything to happen in The World of Wine? What are ‘marginal lands' and why are they so often dedicated to growing wine? And will Jamie give Scott enough credit for coming up with such an incisive question? Probably not. But you, intrepid listener, can find out the answers to all these questions, plus whether the boys think this is a good pairing, and how Scott's wife thinks Jamie would die in an alien invasion, all simply by pressing play! The 2017 Decibel, Gimblett Gravels Malbec from Hawkes Bay, NZ is available from Wine.com for $25 USD. Part 4.1 of IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT (AND I WANT WINE) Which part of Scott's verbose pitch for this movie - “a big budget, alien invasion, time loop, Looney Tunes war movie” - is a touchstone for Jamie? What's the deal with this movie's incredibly bland title? What happens to a flop after theaters? Can Scott's impassioned defense of Tom Cruise's performance convince the haters to give this movie a chance? Answers to those questions and more, plus the Bad Reviews game. In this episode, Christopher and Scott are joined by Hayleigh Kurland to discuss Danny Boyle's 2002 zombie/not zombie classic 28 Days Later. There's discussion about the distance from London to Manchester and Scott's completely insane theory that the military turned Brendan Gleason's character into a Rage carrier through a method that would make Rube Goldberg proud. Later, Scott provides a story of a real life exorcist that may or may not be an actual insane person.https://www.the-sun.com/news/403785/exorcist-real-devil-possessed-pennsylvania/
The gang goes out catching toads this week, as they review the indie thriller Don't Tell a Soul (2020) chosen by Tyler. Two young brothers break into a fumigated house of their elderly neighbor to steal over $10,000 and are caught red-handed by a rogue security guard (Rainn Wilson). After a short foot chase, the guard falls down an old well, far from town, and thje boys have to decide whether to leave him and surely get away with their amateur heist, or get help and risk being caught.
