Episode 1450: No Holds Barred: Kevin Carter on the Rise and Decline and Rise of Sumo in America (Part One)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with sumotori, judoka, writer, and intellectual Kevin Carter. This is the first of a two-part interview. We spoke with him by phone Wednesday, April 14. For Kevin Carter, sumo has been a lifelong passion. While growing up, "I would come home after school, and the only thing I really watched on TV was sports," he said. "I watched a lot of baseball, football, basketball. I also played hockey, too. But I was watching every Saturday that I could, and very occasionally they'd put on sumo. "I immediately fell in love with sumo. It was like, 'this is great, man!' These are guys who are obviously athletes." This was in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and many of the greats of Japanese sumo at that time were sometimes featured on the sports highlight shows of that era. "I just totally fell in love with sumo." He still had not competed in sumo, though. When he was at Harvard, he played football. He had developed an affinity for Japanese culture by the time he began a career in journalism, covering sports for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Later he began writing about culture, music, and arts for that newspaper. One day while watching Philadelphia's channel 10 (WCAU-TV, which was a CBS station at that time), he saw a feature on a huge African-American wrestler named Manny Yarbrough. He immediately resolved to do a story on him. That led him to interviewing both Manny Yarbrough and his judo and sumo coach, Yoshisada Yonezuka, who ran the Cranford Judo Karate Center in Cranford, New Jersey. It proved to be a life-changing moment. "I want to do this, too," he said, and so he did, in both sumo and judo. Among the sumo events in which he competed, he recalled, was a special U.S. vs. Canada tournament in 1993 in Hamilton, Ontario. He finished with a record of 9-6 and won a technique prize. He continued training with Manny Yarbrough, who was having greater success than him. In 1992, the first amateur sumo world championships were held. Manny Yarbrough won a silver medal that year in the open weight division, the first of five world medals he would win. In 1995, Manny Yarbrough won a gold medal at the amateur sumo world championships, still the only American to win a world championship at this event. Many members of the U.S. team at that time were Hawaiian. Kevin Carter described that period as a "dynasty of Hawaiians in amateur sumo." Sumo had become popular in Hawaii at least as early as the 1960s, and was a school sport there as well. In 1995 and 1996, he did his graduate work in Asian history at the University of Hawaii, and had a chance to train and compete in sumo while there. After a brief foray into MMA, Manny Yarbrough went from amateur sumo into a venture trying to establish professional sumo in the U.S. In 1998, an event called "Night of the Giants" was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, at what was then the Trump Taj Mahal. It was taped for delayed showing on ESPN, and Kevin Carter worked with the show's promoters as a TV commentator and in helping run the tournament. But many things went wrong with the show. First off, the promoters wanted to build it around Manny Yarbrough, who by that time had built a following, especially in that region. But Manny lost in the first round of the tournament, which was eventually won by Mark Robinson, who had already defeated him in the 1996 amateur sumo world championships. In addition, there was no agreement on how this show and event would be positioned. Many of the people running it wanted it to be a spectacle, a la the WWF of that time, while others, like Kevin Carter, wanted it run like a sport. With all these problems, he said, the show was "one and done." That failed event and what was happening in general with American sumo would also prove to be the beginning of the end of Kevin Carter's involvement in the sport, at least for some time. We will discuss that more in the upcoming second part of our interview. Please also subscribe to the No Holds Barred page on Patreon for much more No Holds Barred content. 11. 11 U.S. Presidents Who Were Entrepreneurs and What We Can Learn From Them

In April 1982, President Ronald Regan gave a speech before the U.S. Chamber of Congress saying:  “Entrepreneurs are heroes of modern times. They rarely receive the credit they deserve. Treasury Secretary Don Regan recently reminded the student body of Bucknell University that it was under capitalism that mankind brought ‘light where before there was darkness, heat where once there was only cold, medicines where there was sickness and disease, food where there was scarcity, and wealth where humanity was living in squalor.' And much of what he was talking about came into being in the lifetime of many of us here in this room. But the societies which achieve the most spectacular progress in the shortest period of time are not the most tightly controlled, the biggest in size, or the wealthiest in material resources. They are societies that reward initiative and believe in the magic of the marketplace…” (Source: Small Business Trends) As we take this day to remember our presidents, we want to also recognize and learn from those presidents who made entrepreneurial ventures, took risks, and helped add to the prosperity of this country. Although each of them was not successful, there is something to be learned from their stories. Today we will be recognizing 11 entrepreneur U.S. Presidents along with their challenges, resilience, and successes.  These 11 entrepreneur Presidents are from both major U.S. political parties, and I understand that some of these Presidents are controversial to some people. By including them in this article, I'm not endorsing their political views. Instead, I'm trying to learn and teach what I can from their experiences as entrepreneurs.    1. George Washington (1789-1797): 1st President   “The harder the conflict, the greater the triumph.”- President Washington  While most presidents were entrepreneurs before they took office, President Washington didn't become an entrepreneur until after his final term as president. For much of his childhood, Washington lived on a farm in Mount Vernon, Virginia, which was later inherited by his half-brother, Lawrence. When Lawrence passed away, Washington leased it from Lawrence's wife and inherited it in 1761 (Source: History.com). He later renovated the estate into a mansion, gardens, a place to lay family tombs, shops, barns, and various living quarters. Washington even turned a large portion into farms as wheat being his main harvest. He then packaged the wheat and created GW Flour, one of the very first branded food products (Source: GoodReads review of “George Washington, Entrepreneur”), which was then exported throughout the US and Europe. President Washington's farm manager, James Anderson, later encouraged Washington to open up a distillery on the grounds of Mount Vernon, Virginia, and “with just a boiler and five copper stills, the 2,250 square-foot distillery became profitable almost instantly.” (Source: Ondeck) By the year 1799, Washington had one of the largest distilleries in the country making 11,000 gallons per year (Source: Business News Daily).    2. Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865): 16th President   “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing.”- President Lincoln In 1833 and at the age of 23, President Lincoln and his friend, William Berry, opened up a general store called Lincoln-Berry in New Salem, Illinois. Many sources say that they were not very successful as they purchased inventory from other stores on credit and then made a profit by reselling the items. Although the economy was doing very well at the time, the location of their store wasn't ideal as the town stopped growing. Lincoln had to sell his share of the store as a result, and after Berry died, Lincoln received his $1,000 debt (Source: Business News Daily), which resulted in Lincoln's bankruptcy. Over 17 years, soon to be President Lincoln was required to pay his creditors back (Source: Legal Zoom).  “Despite it all, Lincoln was known to rise triumphantly out of failure. He went on to launch a successful law practice in 1837, and became the only president to receive a patent in 1849” (Source: OnDeck), which was for a device to lift riverboats over sandbars.  “The best way to predict your future is to create it.”- President Lincoln    3. Andrew Johnson (1865-1869): 17th President   “I realized, there are people out there who can beat me, want to beat me. And unless I continue to innovate and evolve, I am going to learn a painful lesson from someone who has.”- President Johnson Before becoming President of the United States and running political campaigns, President Johnson was a very successful tailor and real estate owner. His mother was also a very talented seamstress who helped Andrew find an apprenticeship in Greeneville, Tennessee when he was only 18-years-old (Source: OnDeck). His talents with tailoring flourished, he opened up a shop in 1826, which became very successful, and he started investing in real estate from there. A fun fact about President Johnson is that while working at his tailor shop, “it eventually became a gathering place for political debate, and Johnson held his first meetings as an alderman (an elected member of a municipal council) in 1829.” (Source: OnDeck)   4. Warren Harding (1921-1923): 29th President   “America's present need is not heroics but healing; not nostrums but normalcy; not revolution but restoration.”- President Harding President Harding was raised in a family that found interest in the newspaper. He eventually attended school at Ohio Central College, and there, according to an article by Business News Daily, “he studied the newspaper trade in college after dabbling in teaching, insurance, and law,” and graduated at the age of seventeen. Two years later, he and several partners purchased the Ohio newspaper, The Marion Star, for $300 (Source: OnDeck) while it was near bankruptcy. Their biggest challenge was owning a Republican newspaper in a Democratic area (Source: OnDeck), but Harding completely turned things around with his wife's help in managing the newspaper. The Marion Star eventually became “the city's official daily newspaper.” (Source: CheatSheet)  After receiving full ownership of the paper at the age of 21, Harding became worn down and had to spend time at a local sanitarium (Source: Business News Daily). He eventually recovered, found favor in his writing from local politicians, and earned revenue to run his political campaigns (Source: FreedomVoice Blog). He was a very successful businessman and after being in the newspaper business for 39 years (Source: TIME), he was able to sell the newspaper before dying in 1923 for $550,000, which is equivalent to $7 Million today (Source: Business News Daily). “Today, the business (from the newspaper in Ohio called the Marion Star) is still alive and owned by the Gannett Company, a publicly-traded media holding company.” (Source: NextShark)   5. Herbert Hoover (1929-1933): 31st President   “Competition is not only the basis of protection to the customer, but is the incentive to progress.” - President Hoover At the age of 40, Herbert Hoover became a millionaire (Source: FreedomVoice Blog), but he found success from his labors by being diligent and resilient. When Herbert was 9-years-old, he became an orphan along with his two siblings. His uncle eventually took them in, but according to an article by Miller Center, “the young Hoover was shy, sensitive, introverted, and somewhat suspicious, characteristics that developed, at least in part, in reaction to the loss of his parents at such a young age.” Although he had average to failing grades except for math (Source: Miller Center), Hoover was determined and attended Stanford University. According to the same source, he worked in the clerk's registration office to pay for tuition and began using his entrepreneurial skills by creating a student laundry service.  After graduating college with a geology degree, he got a job with Bewick, Moreing & Co working 70 hours/week in a gold mine pushing carts. Hoover then left to start his own mining consulting business called Burmese silver mines, which focused on reorganizing failing companies and finding investors to pay for developing new mines. His company quickly employed 175,000 employees (Source: Entrepreneur), and the success that he built with his company earned him the title of “Doctor of sick mines.” (Source: OnDeck) By the time that he was forty, his wealth had grown not only from his company but from publishing a leading textbook on mining engineering. Other entrepreneurial successes he had included inventing a new process to extract zinc that had been lost and starting up in the Zinc Corporation, which later became part of a larger corporation (Source: Business News Daily).   6. Franklin Roosevelt (1933-1945): 32nd President   “The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it: If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.”- President Roosevelt At the age of 39, Franklin Roosevelt became ill with many symptoms, including paralysis of his legs. Although he was first diagnosed with paralytic poliomyelitis, his symptoms were shown to be more consistent with Guillain-Barre syndrome (Source: Pubmed). Despite his physical circumstances, he refused to accept that he would be permanently paralyzed. He became president in 1933, but before his political endeavors, he founded a hydrotherapy center in 1926 for the treatment of his disease, according to the FreedomVoice Blog. It became known as the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation and still operates, serving about 4,000 people each year with all types of disabilities (Source: Entrepreneur).   8. Harry Truman (1945-1953): 33rd President   “I studied the lives of great men and famous women, and I found that the men and women who got to the top were those who did the jobs they had in hand, with everything they had of energy and enthusiasm and hard work.”- President Truman Due to medical issues, President Truman is the only president elected after 1897 who did not earn a college degree (Source: Business News Daily). He then served in France during WWI and upon returning home, Truman and his wartime friend, Eddie Jacobson, opened up a men's clothing store in Kansas City, Missouri, which was successful for three years before failing, due to the postwar recession. “After his shop went bankrupt, it took him 15 years to pay off his share of the firm's debts. Nevertheless, the store established Truman's reputation as a respected businessman, which in turn set him on the path to civic engagement.” (Source: OnDeck) This new path paved the way for greater success in other offices. According to the same article by OnDeck, he even joined the Triangle Club, which is an association of businessmen committed to improving the city, and became involved in activities with the American Legion.    9. Jimmy Carter (1977-1981): 39th President   “It's not necessary to fear the prospect of failure but to be determined not to fail.”- President Carter When President Carter was 10-years-old, he stocked his family's peanut farm with produce and took it to town to be sold. He continued to save the money he made, and by the age of 13, “he bought five houses around the plains which the Great Depression put on the market at rock-bottom prices. He then rented the homes to families in the area.” (Source: Abby Connect)  The risk of losing the 2,500-acre peanut farm became very high when his father died of cancer in 1953. According to an article by Entrepreneur, Carter then returned home from the Navy to manage the struggling peanut farm. “Carter reportedly threw himself into farming the way he had with his naval duties, and hard work and effective management made the Carter farm prosperous by 1959.” (Source: Entrepreneur)  In 1971, a sudden drought hit, bringing another risk to the farm, so Carter bought local farmers' peanuts and sold them in bulk to big processors. “This led Carter Warehouse to gross $800,000 annually by 1971, up from a mere $184 when Carter started.” (Source: TIME)   9. George H.W. Bush (1989-1993): 41st President   "No problem of human making is too great to be overcome by human ingenuity, human energy, and the untiring hope of the human spirit."- President George H.W. Bush President George H.W. Bush found much entrepreneurial success from the oil industry, after graduating from Yale with an economics degree. He first started in oil as a salesperson for Dresser (Source: Time), then later formed a partnership with his neighbor, John Overby, and created the Bush-Overby Oil Development Co. in 1951. Due to family connections, the company was financed with nearly half a million dollars from Bush's uncle (Source: Entrepreneur).  The success of the company grew, and in 1954, Bush-Overby Oil controlled 71 wells, which produced 1,250 barrels of oil per day (Source: LegalZoom). By 1953, their company then merged with another independent oil company to create Zapata Petroleum, of which Bush became president (Source: Entrepreneur). After years of growth and in 1966, Bush was able to sell his holding and made about $1 Million doing so (Source: TIME). "Be bold in your caring, be bold in your dreaming and above all else, always do your best."- President George H.W. Bush   10. George W. Bush (2001-2009): 43rd President   “Prosperity results from entrepreneurship and ingenuity.”- President George W. Bush George W. Bush earned his bachelor's degree from Yale and then became the first US president to earn his MBA, which he received from Harvard. After school, he followed in his father's footsteps in the oil industry, but took a different approach as he “searched mineral-rights titles in county courthouses around West Texas and then would see if the owners would lease those rights to oil companies.” (Source: Time) In 1977, he then founded his own company called Arbusto (Spanish for Bush), which focused on low-risk, low-return wells, and found a relatively low gas field (Source: Abby Connect). Eventually, the price of oil dropped, and their company became very high-risk. Spectrum 7 Energy Corporation jumped in and rescued their company, merging the two in 1984 with Bush as the CEO, according to an article by LegalZoom. “After losing $400,000, it was purchased by Harken Energy Corporation, and Bush served as a consultant to Harken,” (Source: LegalZoom) After working in the oil industry for many years, Bush decided to move into sports and invested in the Texas Rangers MLB team with $600,000 (Source: Entrepreneur). According to the same article by Entrepreneur, he then sold his stakes for the team in 1998 for $15 Million, a 2,400% ROI.   11. Donald Trump (2017-2021): 45th President   “As long as you are going to be thinking anyway, think big.”- President Donald Trump Donald Trump is a real estate guru. He studied real estate at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and invested in Philadelphia real estate while studying there. He took over his family's company to develop it into an international brand and according to Abby Connect, in the 1970s he began branching into Manhattan skyscrapers and renamed the company Trump Organization. He's built luxurious hotels such as the Grand Hyatt Hotel and Trump Plaza, Trump's Tower on Fifth Avenue, as well as the Trump headquarters. In the 1980s, he started placing casinos in Atlantic City, adding to Trump Plaza, and Trump Castle. In 1990, he even opened up his own Trump Taj Mahal, known as his own “eighth wonder of the world.” (Source: Abby Connect)  According to Time, Trump appears to own or control more than 500 businesses in some two-dozen countries around the world! He has been very successful, but not without several bankruptcies, according to Abby Connect. Amidst his many businesses all over the world, he has also published books, opened up golf and hotel resorts, owned beauty pageants, and created his own branded products such as Trump steaks, Trump University, Trump shuttle, and Trump Success Eau De Toilette (Source: Business News Daily).  “Get going. Move forward. Aim High. Plan a takeoff. Don't just sit on the runway and hope someone will come along and push the airplane. It simply won't happen. Change your attitude and gain some altitude. Believe me, you'll love it up here.”- President Donald Trump Key Takeaways Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: President  Washington the greater the conflict, the better the triumph. We savor the hard-won victories even more.  President Lincoln taught us to not let failure stop us. Perseverance is a key attribute of successful entrepreneurs. President Johnson taught us that unless we continue to innovate and evolve, we're going to learn a painful lesson from someone who has. This is so true with tectonic shifts.  Don't be afraid to take risks. Be determined, don't get caught up in the circumstances, and press forward as President Harding did.  Current circumstances will not remain forever. Diligence and resilience go on a long way as President Hoover has proven.  President Roosevelt encouraged us to be bold and persistently experiment. Try something. If it fails, pivot or move onto another. President Truman taught that those who made it to the top were those who did the work, with enthusiasm and everything they had. Whatever we do, we should do our best and give it all we have. President Carter taught us that we don't need to be afraid of failure, we just have to be determined no to fail.  President George H.W. Bush taught us to be bold in our caring and dreaming. President George W. Bush taught us that prosperity comes from entrepreneurship and ingenuity.  President Trump taught us to move forward, aim high, and create a plan. We shouldn't wait around for others to do the work for us or to make things happen. Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer? Did you like today's episode? Abandoned Trump Plaza in Atlantic City to be Torn DownOne of the biggest eyesores on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in recent years was the old Trump Plaza. The property is owned by real estate mogul Carl Icahn. He received a court order to tear down the building in April. Current plans call for the demolition of both empty towers by the end of the year or by next February at the latest. Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. announced those plans in a press conference last week. There was no mention of Icahn’s future plans for the oceanfront property. The major is interested in working on future development plans with whoever owns the property. A $1.1 Billion Biloxi Casino Project in The WorksThis proposed Biloxi casino resort would be the most expensive casino project in the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi. The site is the former Broadwater Beach Resort. The company behind the proposal is Broadwater Development LLP. Plans call for a casino, hotel and spa. Also included is a golf course and an indoor/outdoor entertainment center. The entire property covers 266 acres including a portion of waterfront to house a marina. The property has sat idle since Hurricane Katrina ravaged this area in 2005. It was once the site of President Casino. This was a $17 million floating casino the size of a football field. Wind Creek Hospitality CEO Looks to The Future for Pennsylvania CasinoWind Creek Bethlehem is located in the eastern portion of the state, north of Philadelphia. It is the second-biggest casino in the state in terms of gaming revenue. The parent company is Wind Creek Hospitality as part of Alabama’s Poarch Band of Creek Indians. The company’s President and CEO is Jay Dorris. Beyond the current plans of reopening the casino’s doors, there are still big plans in the works. Closed since mid-March due to the coronavirus, there is no set timetable to reopen. The 4th of July holiday weekend is a logical target. Dorris is still hoping to break ground on a $100 million hotel expansion project late this summer.

Also on the card, we had a Co-Main which featured Patrick Smith winning with one of the four finishes that night, decimating Eric ‘Butterbean’ Esch with a Submission via Punches and Elbows at just 3:17 into Round 1, and we were treated to one of our other finishes that night which showcased Oleg ‘The Russian Bear’ Taktarov in his return, which would turn out to actually be his last professional fight. This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Eddie Mercado and Vic Rodriguez of Bloody Elbow as they relive UFC 50, complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. On October 22, 2004, UFC 50, a seven-fight card, went down from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This was approximately six months before the fight that basically changed everything for the UFC at the time, which was Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar — we are talking right before the UFC really took off, the era pre-dating Reebok, USADA, Five-Round Main-Events... before title fights were mandatory Main Events, among several other pivotal things! So, the main event that night showcased none-other-than ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’, Mr. Tito Ortiz, who was just coming off a two-fight losing streak against the likes of Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture; Tito had only lost 4 fights in his total fourteen bouts in the UFC, at that time. He was up against an up-and-comer in Patrick ‘The Predator’ Cote, who came into the octagon for his UFC debut that evening on a five-fight winning streak, undefeated in his career with TKO Major League MMA; who stepped in when Guy Mezger was scratched due to ‘Stroke Symptoms’ at the last minute. Also on the card, the co-main event featured Matt Hughes, who was carrying a ton of wins under his belt, who took on AND defeated the legendary, Georges St. Pierre; via an armbar submission, at just 4:59 into Round 1 of 5. In addition to that quick finish, we saw Rich Franklin battle it out against Jorge Rivera for 14:28 minutes in a three round bout, with ‘Ace’ snagging a slick armbar submission for a finish near the very end against ‘El Conquistador’. Donald Trump's businesses failed; a lot. He bankrupted hotels, casinos, an airline and—even an entire football league. And when they failed Trump needed someone to bail him out. And up until the late 1990s that person was his dad.Yet despite Trump's businesses failures, he came to personify the image of American wealth and success in the 1980s. It was an era of a roaring stock market and Wall Street extravagance and no one seemed to embody the fabulously wealthy lifestyle more than Donald Trump. He cultivated that image and became a celebrity. In this episode of The Asset, host Max Bergmann, the director of The Moscow Project, an initiative of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, shows that when Trump wrote The Art of the Deal, when he was on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, when he was being listed in Forbes as one of the wealthiest people in the world, it was all a fraud. It was an act. As everything was falling apart around him, Trump proved a master at keeping up appearances – at living a double life. He convinced the public, the media, and banks that he was a great businessman when in fact, he was bankrupt.During this period Trump also rubbed shoulders with mobsters and even got on the radar of the KGB – even going to Moscow at the invitation of the Soviet Union's Ambassador to the United States. As the 1990s became the 2000s, Donald Trump's dad was no longer around to bail him out. But traditional banks would not lend to him, coining the term “the Donald Risk.” Yet Trump was able to build project after project by turning to a new class of uber-wealthy buyers and investors from Russia and the former Soviet Union. The question would soon become: who was cultivating whom? The Asset tells the full story of Trump and Russia. Each week, we will examine the colorful characters and dirty deals that populate the story of how Russia helped the son of a shady real estate mogul became President of the United States.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On Dec. 14, 2016, one month after his election, President-elect Donald Trump had a call with the prime minister of Vietnam. At a time when foreign governments were scrambling to contact Trump, the conversation was a victory for the Vietnamese. State television broadcast footage of the call, with the prime minister surrounded by other smiling officials. But inside the State Department, officials were puzzled and concerned. Historically, post-election calls to heads of state are carefully choreographed affairs. Careful deliberation goes into who the president-elect speaks to first and career diplomats deliver background briefings on issues to be raised and avoided. The Trump transition operation ignored those conventions. The contact with Vietnam was not set up by the State Department. Instead, Trump’s personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, helped arrange the call. Kasowitz had another client with a keen interest in Vietnam: Philip Falcone, an American investor with a major casino outside Ho Chi Minh City. After the Trump call, Kasowitz traveled to Vietnam with Falcone. They met with government officials as part of an effort to persuade Vietnam to lift a ban on gambling for its citizens. Such a shift would deliver vastly more gamblers to Falcone’s casino. “Phil asked if Marc could arrange a phone call between the president and prime minister of Vietnam,” said a person familiar with the call. “Marc did that.” In an interview, Falcone denied he requested the call. He added there was nothing improper about arranging such a call. “It’s just lending a hand when people ask you,” he said. A spokesman for Kasowitz acknowledged the lawyer provided a “telephone contact” to the Vietnamese government to call Trump. Kasowitz has represented Trump for over 15 years, including in the Trump University fraud case, against allegations of sexual harassment, and, most recently, in the Russia investigation. Falcone, who was barred from the securities industry several years ago after admitting to wrongdoing in managing his hedge fund, has been trying for several years to salvage his several hundred-million-dollar-bet on Vietnam’s gaming industry. So far, that investment has not paid off, in large measure because of the rules limiting casinos to foreign bettors. It’s not clear whether Trump mentioned the casino on his December 2016 call with the prime minister or in any other communications with the Vietnamese. A White House spokeswoman referred all questions to Kasowitz. The Vietnamese embassy in the U.S. didn’t respond to requests for comment. U.S. embassy officials in Vietnam heard about the call in advance from Falcone’s casino company, not the Trump transition. And they never received information from the Trump transition about what was said on the call; their only understanding of what was discussed came from Vietnamese officials, according to a person with knowledge of the episode. “You want the State Department to set up calls and take notes,” said Susan Rice, a senior adviser on Barack Obama’s transition in 2008-09 who went on to become National Security Advisor. “You want contacts made in a fashion that can be accountable to the president-elect. You want background briefings for the president-elect.” In November 2008, the Obama transition explicitly warned high-profile campaign supporters not to “under any circumstances” speak to “any foreign officials, or embassies on behalf of the transition or President-elect Obama.  The Vietnam call was just one instance of how the Trump administration has blurred the lines between private business interests and those of the country. Trump, who did not divest from his own real estate empire, has declared America “open for business.” Many have tried to take him up on the promise. Business people, lobbyists, friends, and foreign dignitaries have all vied for access to Trump since his election, believing it can mean lucrative contracts, eased regulations, or otherwise convey to potential partners a proximity to power and influence. Falcone, who didn’t donate to Trump’s campaign, told ProPublica his casino hasn’t gained anything from the phone call. “Literally nothing has changed since the new administration.” *** Falcone’s business interest in Vietnam goes back a decade. His Harbinger Capital fund has poured money -- Bloomberg put it at more than $450 million -- into a casino-resort called The Grand Ho Tram Strip. Located on a remote coastline 75 miles outside Ho Chi Minh City, the complex includes a gleaming Vegas-style tower, a golf course designed by the legendary Greg Norman, and a casino with 90 tables and a private area for high rollers dubbed the Pearl Room. But the illegality of gambling for Vietnamese citizens has posed a nearly insurmountable obstacle. On a recent visit, the sprawling casino was almost entirely empty. Staff outnumbered customers. One industry observer quipped, “You could drive a truck through the casino and not hit anyone.” To save the project, Falcone has spent years lobbying the Vietnamese government to allow its citizens to gamble in his casino. The casino has proved not to be the comeback vehicle Falcone might have hoped for. A Harvard hockey player turned high-flying hedge fund manager who made it onto Forbes’ billionaire list and amassed a large stake in the New York Times Company, Falcone’s fortunes turned in the years after the financial crisis. In a 2013 settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, he was barred from the securities industry for five years and admitted to taking an improper loan of over $100 million from his fund. Falcone lost his place on the Forbes’ list. Two months before the 2016 election, Falcone’s team made a play to add political heft to the Ho Tram project, appointing a pair of new board members to the casino company: Tony Podesta, the veteran lobbyist and brother of Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager; and Loretta Pickus, former vice president of legal affairs at Trump Entertainment Resorts, Donald Trump’s now-defunct casino company. A week after Trump won the election, the casino company sent out a new press release touting Pickus’ appointment. It mentioned her onetime role representing Ivanka Trump and made a thinly veiled reference to Ho Tram’s efforts to get its local gambling license in Vietnam. “With Ms. Pickus having substantial experience with Trump properties, she hopes The Grand Ho Tram can continue to serve as a champion of U.S.-Vietnam ties for the incoming Trump Administration,” the release said, calling her appointment “an excellent opportunity to share best practices from the United States as Vietnam considers opportunities to reform the regulatory regime for its hospitality and gaming sector.” One of Pickus’ duties at Trump’s company was overseeing anti-money laundering enforcement. The Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City repeatedly ran afoul of anti-money laundering laws, and paid multiple fines for its lack of proper oversight. Pickus told ProPublica she has a decades long relationship with Trump but hasn’t had contact with him or the administration since his election. She also defended the Trump casino anti-money laundering programs as “sophisticated” and appropriate. After Trump’s surprise election victory, Kasowitz’s longtime client was suddenly president-elect. A spokesman for the lawyer acknowledged Kasowitz’s role in setting up the December call between Trump and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. “At the request of the office of the Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S., Mr. Kasowitz provided a telephone contact that the Vietnamese could use to try to arrange a congratulatory call to President-elect Trump,” the spokesman said. (This wasn’t the only unusual Trump call during the chaotic transition. Controversy erupted when it emerged that former Senator Bob Dole, working as a lobbyist for Taiwan, played a role arranging a precedent-breaking call between Trump and Taiwan’s president.) Just a few weeks after the phone call between Trump and Phuc, Falcone traveled to Hanoi to meet the Vietnamese prime minister and press him on the casino project. State media reported that Falcone “asked the Vietnamese government to continue creating favorable conditions for U.S. companies, including Harbinger, to do long-term and stable business in Vietnam.” Falcone has retained an array of lobbyists, consultants, and media advisers to persuade the Vietnamese government to change its rules on gambling. The effort included getting Falcone on the cover of Vietnamese Esquire, arranging regular meetings between Falcone and top Vietnamese officials, and seeking assistance from the U.S. embassy. It’s not clear when Kasowitz first got involved in the Ho Tram project. His law firm has represented Falcone and his associated businesses going back to at least 2013. David Friedman, who was a name partner at Kasowitz’s firm until Trump named him U.S. ambassador to Israel, also represented Falcone’s fund. In 2017, Kasowitz traveled to Vietnam with Falcone. But Kasowitz went “not as my attorney, just kind of getting to know the landscape, understanding what was happening over there,” Falcone told ProPublica. Falcone said Kasowitz attended some meetings with Falcone and Vietnamese officials. A Kasowitz spokesman said Kasowitz went to Vietnam “to advise Mr. Falcone on legal issues” and declined to comment further. Also on that trip was Jerry Abbruzzese, a Falcone consultant who has a history of working the levers of government for business interests. He is best known for being the main witness in the corruption trials of the former New York State Senate leader, Joe Bruno. The case centered on Bruno receiving a large consulting contract and payment for a racehorse from Abbruzzese, whose companies had business before the state. Bruno was ultimately acquitted. Abbruzzese was not charged in the case. He declined to comment on his role in Ho Tram.  Two Washington-based firms stocked with former diplomats from both Democratic and Republican administrations, BowerGroupAsia and The Asia Group, have worked on Falcone’s casino project. According to Falcone, Asia Group asked him for a connection with Kasowitz because of the attorney’s close ties with the Trump administration. A spokesman for Asia Group said: “The Asia Group does not comment on business confidential information, including the names of our clients and contract terms.” Asia Group worked with Falcone to host a conference of investors in New York for Prime Minister Phuc’s visit to the U.S. last May. Luminaries including Ret. General David Petraeus, now with the firm KKR, attended. The next day, Phuc traveled to Washington for his first in-person meeting with President Trump at the White House. The two leaders discussed trade and North Korea. As Trump and Phuc left a large meeting in the Cabinet Room, Marc Kasowitz was there, apparently waiting, according to a person familiar with the visit. Kasowitz greeted Trump and shook hands with Phuc. The White House and the Vietnamese embassy declined to comment on Trump’s meeting with Phuc. There’s no evidence Trump raised Ho Tram. Kasowitz’s spokesman denied he was waiting to greet the prime minister: “Mr. Kasowitz was in the White House on other business on May 31, 2017. He had no idea the Prime Minister of Vietnam was there that day, he was not waiting outside a meeting room for the Prime Minister, it was a total coincidence that he ran into the Prime Minister with the President and he had no substantive conversation with the Prime Minister.” The spokesman added, “Neither Mr. Kasowitz nor anyone else at the firm has used any access [to Trump] to help a client of the firm.” Falcone’s efforts have so far proved unsuccessful: the Ho Tram casino hasn’t yet won a local gambling license. One industry expert attributed that to disagreements within Vietnam’s Communist Party-controlled state. “I find it shocking that people would think that the administration would bring up Ho Tram or even think about getting involved,” Falcone said. Just months before Donald Trump announced his bid for president in 2015, federal regulators announced they were slapping one of his longtime Atlantic City casinos with a record-setting $10 million fine for lack of controls around money laundering. The problems went back years. The penalty was actually the second record-setting fine for the Trump Taj Mahal involving money-laundering oversight. What exactly did the Taj fail to do? Casino officials admitted to “willful and repeated” violations of the Bank Secrecy Act: As federal authorities put it in a settlement, the Trump Taj Mahal “failed to report suspicious transactions; failed to properly file required currency transaction reports; and failed to keep appropriate records as required.” In this episode of Trump, Inc., our podcast with ProPublica, we dig into the now-bankrupt and shuttered Trump Taj Mahal, once one of the biggest and glitziest casinos in the world. It’s a story of chaotic operations, massive debt, and a tendency to treat rules as more like suggestions. Ring a bell? And remember, we want to hear from you: We’re always eager for tips. We also want to hear your questions. What would you like to know about Trump’s businesses? What confuses you? We may be able to answer, and even if not, we can at least try to explain why something isn’t known.

CHRISTIE: KUSHNER ‘DESERVES THE SCRUTINY’ OF MUELLER Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, “deserves the scrutiny” of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia’s ties to the administration, Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday in an interview on MSNBC. “He deserves the scrutiny,” Christie said. “You know why? Because he was involved in the transition and involved in meetings that call into question his role.” This is not the first time Christie and Kushner have been at odds, Brett Samuels writes for The Hill. The New Jersey governor has said previously that he believes the president’s son-in-law had a role in his removal as head of the Trump transition. ONE-WAY TOLLS COMING TO PARKWAY EXIT IN EAST ORANGE In an effort to reduce the crash rate at a busy toll plaza, NJ Turnpike Authority officials approved on Tuesday a plan to bring one-way tolls to Exit 145 of the Garden State Parkway in East Orange, Larry Higgs writes for NJ.com. The northbound toll plaza will be demolished and the $1 toll at the southbound plaza will be doubled. Construction is scheduled to begin in late April or May. MURPHY CHOOSES ASSEMBLYWOMAN AS BANKING COMMISSIONER Gov.-elect Phil Murphy announced Tuesday that he is nominating Assemblywoman Marlene Caride of Ridgefield Park to be state banking commissioner, John Reitmeyer reports for NJ Spotlight. The position is likely to have increased significance because Murphy has pledged to create a state-run bank. Today, the governor-elect is expected to name Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti commissioner of the state Department of Transportation, Brent Marcus and Samantha Marcus report for NJ.com. CASINO COMMISSION APPROVES HARD ROCK ATLANTIC CITY DEAL A management agreement between the owners of the former Trump Taj Mahal and the operators of the new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City won approval Tuesday from the Casino Control Commission. Under the 10-year agreement, Hard Rock will operate the property, which is owned by Boardwalk 1000, Nicholas Huba reports for the Press of Atlantic City. STATE APPROVES SALE OF MEADOWLANDS HOSPITAL The acting state health commissioner has approved the sale of Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus to Yan Moshe, a real estate developer who owns a Bergen County surgical center. Although concerns were raised about the hospital’s operating losses, its small number of patients and the financial viability of the sale, Christopher R. Rinn, the acting commissioner, said that blocking the $12.2 million sale could deny residents of Hudson County access to health care, Lindy Washburn reports for The Record. The new ownership is required to continue operating the medical center as a general hospital. Want more? Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Paulie and Evan took a trip to Atlantic city this weekend and Paulie did it again.  He lost his shirt... Pants...socks...underwear. And not from gambling!  He's gotta learn to bring a bag or something if he wants to run naked through the Trump Taj Mahal.  Luckily he's quick so he didn't get caught and could still put together a podcast for you all.     This week in the news is another tidbit on Paulie's obsession with Tom Cruise.  Add in a few firemen and hmmm...  Paulie and Evan answer all your letters, likes and dislikes.  This week Evan reviews two more DVDs and gives out a rare 4 splat award.  This time it's for 'Dreams of Rafael' by Black Scorpion.  The second DVD 'Forced Entry' by Mustang studios is no slouch with a solid 3 splats.  Paulie goes both ways on his toy usage and reviews the Lex Steele Dual Dong.  Wrapping things up is MTFT tune 'Up to believe" by the Kellys.
