Welcome! My guest today is a repeat guest, Dr. Ritamarie, who is licensed in chiropractic, with certifications in acupuncture, nutrition, and herbal medicine. She specializes in thyroid, digestion, adrenal, and insulin imbalances. She has spent the last 20 years developing systematic ways of looking at the body and cracking even the most difficult health cases. She has found that insulin resistance is the cause of more than 50% of health problems! Let’s catch up with Dr. Ritamarie! What you’ll hear in this episode: Do you know the symptoms of insulin-resistance? Follow the Four B’s: belly fat, brain fog, burnout, and blood sugar imbalance. Why is insulin-resistance so important? It can cause cancer and cardiovascular diseases! Think of the standard American diet: full of breads, pasta, and sugary drinks. Increased sugar and insulin are stored as FAT! Dr. Ritamarie shares personal stories of the untimely deaths of her own parents. The blood tests that reveal insulin-resistance are fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C. Dr. Ritamarie explains the numbers and how to interpret them. Did you know that you can monitor your own glucose levels with a simple, inexpensive meter? Dr. Ritamarie tells you how! Her 30-day program monitors and improves blood sugar levels and reveals what food sensitivities exist. Dr. Ritamarie explains the relationship between stress, blood sugar, cortisol, and belly fat. Movement can help to reduce blood sugar levels in a hurry! Dr. Ritamarie explains LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults), in which antibodies attack the pancreas. Can the effects of insulin-resistance be reversed? YES! LADA can show up in young adults, but the disease may not manifest itself until later years. Dr. Ritamarie explains how CRP markers can be elevated. Regarding LADA, she explains what autoimmune antibodies she looks for to help diagnose the problem. Dr. Ritamarie explains how she uses herbs and supplements to decrease cravings and increase the insulin receptors. Her program works with those who are diabetic, pre-diabetic, and those with early symptoms; it is for everybody! Her program is self-paced, with monthly calls and online forums. Welcome! My guest today is Fran Sussman, a holistic practitioner since 1993 who has helped thousands of clients reclaim their health and vitality. She teaches people to heal their gut, balance hormones, reduce inflammation, heal their brains, combat Lyme disease, and much more. Her personal journey includes a full recovery from breast cancer and Lyme disease. Now, at age 62, Fran is grateful to live a life rich with purpose, joy, health, and vitality. Fran has a thriving private practice where she teaches online courses, including her Zen Vitality Detox, which integrates nutritional guidance, health retreats, and simple practices with huge payoffs for mind, body, and spirit. Join us! Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode: How Fran’s early interest in nutrition and the health problems of her two children prompted her journey as a holistic practitioner When traditional medicine didn’t have answers for her children, Fran did her own research and found natural solutions. It wasn’t long before others started asking for her help in treating their own, and their children’s, health issues. Fran soon became ill, anxious, depressed, and unhappy as she faced her failed marriage and Lyme disease. “What things help people change at deeper levels?” The biggest change for Fran occurred as a result of her work with the renowned endocrinologist Diana Schwarzbein. How Fran’s son’s extreme eczema led her to homeopathic treatments and the discovery of the benefits of a gluten-free diet How Fran experimented with going GF, saw a huge difference, and felt that a “veil was lifted.” She now uses muscle testing with clients to test for gluten sensitivity. “Nobody should be eating gluten.” How Fran also has her clients remove soy and peanuts from their diets, and why Why there is such an increase in toxins in today’s nutrition How Fran uses information from basic lab tests and muscle tests to help her clients Fran explains the science of what gluten does to gut health, including leaky gut, hyperactive immunity, and overreacting inflammation. The good news is that the gut damage CAN be repaired and some foods can be added back in after 3 months to 2 years. Fran explains her “passion topics” of mechanistic vs. dynamic views of the body and health. Fran explains why women past childbearing age should NOT do cardio, but should focus on high-intensity interval training (HIT) instead. How interval training can make a huge difference for women Why Fran now uses strength training, intermittent fasting, ketosis, and yoga to maintain optimal health Rebuilding bones CAN happen, even after menopause! Welcome! Today’s guest is Jessica Drummond, who has helped patients and practitioners in her area of expertise in functional medicine. Our topic today is Pelvic Pain. Join us! Jessica discusses the following about Pelvic Pain: Jessica started out as a physical therapist, specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine. She worked with a patient recovering from breast cancer surgery, and began to specialize in women’s issues for the next ten years. Her focus has been on pelvic pain, sexual pain, fecal and urinary incontinence, pain during/after pregnancy, and pelvic organ prolapse. After the birth of her daughter in 2003, Jessica became sick with vague symptoms. Eventually, a few years later, she found a functional medicine doctor who was able to help, but she never realized that food would be part of her problem. No one had heard of “balancing hormones with food” at this time. Her eventual diagnosis was adrenal fatigue, and she felt relief to have some understanding and answers. Jessica dove into her personal nutrition, which evolved into a low sugar, high protein, high fat diet. She discovered the “missing link” to pelvic pain issues: HORMONES! She started working with women about using food as medicine and other coaching techniques to have more joy in life. Every woman is different regarding pelvic pain issues; there are no set protocols to follow! For her clients, Jessica focuses on taking away sources of inflammation, analyzing bowel health and digestion, and making nutritional changes. Adrenal fatigue can be the culprit for MANY pelvic problems. Jessica looks at the root causes and not the quick fix, knowing that each patient must build up physical resilience before other issues can be addressed. Jessica discusses the basics of her five training programs. Three months is the common length of time for a client’s healing. Their healing may not be complete, but they see signs of improvement in that time, even though it may be 6-12 months to complete the healing process. Rachel shares how she helps face the clinical challenges of her clients and helps them transform their pain. Communication is key in the client/practitioner relationship. Rachel’s favorite question to a client is, “When is the last time you felt REALLY well?” Rachel’s coaching sessions last 30 minutes because she wants to start with small changes that don’t overwhelm the client. Any practice that focuses on integrative physical therapy and functional medicine has the capacity to do the kind of work that Jessica does to help her clients. Jessica shares details about her pelvic pain elimination diet. Welcome to today’s show! Today we have our first repeat guest, Rachel Pontillo, who is an expert in holistic medicine and skin care. We had a great conversation the first time, but there is SO much more to discuss! Today we dig deeper with Rachel about creating your own skin care products. Join us! Rachel shares the following about skin care: As she battled acne as a kid, she became interested in specific ingredients in skin care products. She later attended aesthetic school and learned about ayurvedic herbs and treatments, including herbalism, aromatherapy, and cosmetic chemistry.  As Rachel experimented with mixing different ingredients, she wanted to create products that were shelf stable, and wanted to prove that she could make products with the same (or better!) quality as the super expensive ones at the spa. Rachel discusses reasons why you should make your own skin care products at home: Your products can be healthy and free from toxins. Your skin absorbs up to 66% of what is applied topically, so skin care products are just as important as the food you put IN your body. Individual ingredients at wholesale prices are available online for anyone. Homemade products will be more concentrated and have less water, less carrier oils, and will need less preservatives than over-the-counter products. The prices for various mixtures will vary, depending on the essential oils and carrier oils used. Regarding essential oils, Rachel stays “brand-neutral” in her courses, but has several manufacturers that she recommends. Listen to find out more! There is currently no regulation in the US for essential oils, so doing your homework is important to find high levels of purity and quality. Rachel cautions that essential oils should be handled with care, since they can be dangerous if used improperly. How do you know what toxins might be in your current skin care products? Rachel includes a “dirty 30” list in her book, but she cautions against parabens, sulfates, fragrances, and other preservatives. Rachel says that anyone who is interested in making skin care products should have a cosmetic ingredient dictionary to look up information about various ingredients, and to find alternatives to preservatives, surfactants, and emulsifiers. Rachel shares several stories of her “bloopers” that have occurred while mixing and creating her products. Listen and laugh along with us! Welcome! My guest today is Marcie Peters, a holistic nutritionist and featured speaker. She is the best-selling author of You Are Not Broken: From Incurable to Invincible, to be released later this week. Marcie is a graduate of the University of Washington and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She founded The Health and Happiness Guide and the Transform Your Health World Summit. Join me as we hear Marcie’s story! Marcie shares the following about her life and work: In her early 20’s, Marcie began struggling with chronic health issues that began with flu-like symptoms. She was given no answers except for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome and was told to manage her incurable symptoms with medications. Besides crippling fatigue, Marcie experienced body pain, digestive distress, cognitive dysfunction, migraines, weight gain, joint pain, and insomnia. Marcie began a 16-year journey with many ups and downs, but she finally found answers and changed her life! Her mission today is to help others bypass the years of confusion and jump right to helpful answers with the right strategy for success. What did she do? The first steps were to change her diet. She eliminated gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, corn, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, and reduced her natural sugar intake. Marcie’s advice is to have a doctor or a health coach to help during the transition to a healthy diet, to have the right mindset, and to realize that there will be several days of feeling worse because of the narcotic effect of those eliminated foods. What does Marcie eat for sustainable change? Clean, organic, grass-fed meats, wild fish and seafood, organic fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, quinoa, rice, millet, and lots of coconut products. She drinks LOTS of water, coconut water, herbal tea, and occasional coffee, but NO alcohol. Listen to find out what Marcie says about gluten-free products! As you make changes, your body sends you cues that you are doing the right things and improving. “You have a choice in everything you do in life!” As a health coach, Marcie has Seven Steps to Wellness: Sleep Nutrition Water Intake Movement Mindset Social Support Life Purpose Regarding mindset changes, Marcie says you have to “re-train” your brain by: Recognizing that YOU have a choice. Creating new associations and responses, called “pattern interrupts.” Celebrating successes. Being aware of “fight or flight” response and change it to activate relaxation. Meditating to “center” yourself. “Symptoms are really communication cues to alert us that something is going on and needs to be corrected.” “The journey toward yourself is where the real juiciness lies.” Marcie briefly shares her Pillars of Happiness: Personal responsibility Living consciously Accepting yourself Personal integrity Self-assertiveness Living purposefully Trust and surrender Writing her new book was a cathartic experience, but is a resource that anyone can use to heal. Welcome! Today’s guest is Bridgit Danner, a fellow podcaster who is passionate about women’s health. I met Bridgit at a conference in CA, and we connected immediately. Bridgit specializes in hormones and gut health, so those are our topics today. Join us! Bridgit shares the following: The Hormone Summit is Bridgit’s latest project. The summit includes 35 interviews around themes of hormone issues, PCOS, PMS, endometriosis, thyroid disorders, skin problems, sex drive, life stages, fertility, per-menopause, food, lifestyle, and supportive modalities. The dates are April 11-18; see Resources below for details! What we eat dramatically impacts our hormones! Pesticides and hormones in our food overload our bodies with toxins. We need good fats, leafy greens, and fermented foods. Signs of an unhappy gut include bloating, irregular bowel, food coma, heartburn, gas, migraines, and skin disorders. There are common trigger foods for migraines, general inflammation, and even Candida issues. “Very few people have a great diet and great digestion.” An unhappy gut is a huge stress on the body, producing less sex hormones, less nutrients, and insufficient neurotransmitters. There are four tests that can be used to check for gut health: Urine test for intestinal permeability LEAP food sensitivity test Stool test Genetic test for mutations contributing to IBS Bridgit explains her best steps to start healing your gut: Eat well, slowly, and mindfully. Don’t rush while eating and don’t overeat. An elimination diet may be the answer for you. Eat fermented foods. Take a probiotic. Do what you can to lower your stress. Avoid allergens like corn, soy, dairy, wheat, sugar.  Avoid coffee and tea. Adopt soothing practices for your gut’s mucous lining: use bone broth, collagen powder, L-glutamine, and aloe. Add lots of fiber; eat salad every day, and try to eat 20 different kinds of veggies each week! How much fiber is ideal? Bridgit recommends 30 grams/day. Bridgit shares ways to stimulate the “heat” of digestion to help break down foods. Contrary to the normal American way of eating and drinking, you should NOT drink icy beverages with meals! Welcome! My guest today is Dr. Jay Davidson, who is a doctor of natural functional medicine---AND a fellow Milwaukeean! He specializes in heavy metal detoxification and Lyme disease, treating these disorders from a natural perspective. Jay is a #1 national best-selling author, a husband, father, speaker, church elder, and former radio talk show host. He is hosting the Chronic Lyme Disease Summit coming up in April. Let’s talk to Dr. Jay! Our conversation covers the following: Dr. Jay got involved in Lyme disease treatment because his wife contracted the disease at age 7 and experienced brain swelling, a coma, and many health issues. After giving birth to their daughter almost four years ago, Mrs. Davidson went through a life or death health crisis; this began his intense focus on Lyme treatment. Dr. Jay explains the iSpot, his favorite test for Lyme and a tool for understanding the diagnosis. In the healing approach for Lyme, diet and food are #1. In 2007, Jay and his wife explored testing for heavy metal toxicity. Intermittent fasting and block fasting are techniques that bring success to some Lyme disease. His wife reacted to almost every food except bone broth; she eventually added vegetables back in to her diet, especially avocados, green leafy vegetables, and bell peppers. Jay discusses three things that cause inflammation in the body: Sugar, and grains that turn to sugar Bad fats like vegetable oils Toxins such as heavy metals and mold Besides decreasing the intake of carbohydrates, there are things we should increase in our diets, like healthy fats, vegetable juices, bone broth fasting, and short-term ketogenic diets. “Our bodies are not meant to eat ONE way forever!” Dr. Jay discusses ketosis, which is limiting carbs to 30g/day or less. Perimenopausal and menopausal  women have trouble going into ketosis, so Dr. Jay advises repeating the process to stoke the body for success. He explains. Some people have success and can stay in ketosis for a few months, as they increase carbs up to 50g/day and even to 100-150g for one day weekly. Dr. Jay discusses SIBO—small intestinal bacteria overgrowth. Most digestive bacteria should stay in the large intestine, not the small. SIBO symptoms can be limited by using bone broth to starve the bad bacteria and limiting fiber and sugar. Jay shares his favorite bone broth recipe, using bones, apple cider vinegar, water, Himalayan sea salt, garlic, onions, and spices. If SIBO isn’t a problem, then veggies can be added into the bone broth. In the modern diet, going gluten-free is not enough! We all should limit foods that cause blood sugar spikes and stay away from grains. Dr. J leaves us with two tips: The missing piece in the modern diet? Fresh herbs! Cut out sugar! “The American addiction is unreal!” How to Reach Dr. Jay and more: www.chroniclymediseasesummit.com  See the list of speakers and topics for the Summit, coming April 4-11, 2016!  Sign up for the summit at www.dranh.com/lyme.  Now it’s your turn!   WHAT changes have you made in your diet?  HOW have those changes affected your health?  WHAT has been your biggest challenge while implementing a healthy lifestyle?  WHO do you want to hear from?   Let me know in the comments below and I will try my best to get them on the show!  I want to answer your burning questions and for YOU to add your thoughts to the conversation.  So go ahead and leave a comment now.     And if you want even more resources to heal yourself naturally, make sure you sign up for my email updates, because I share some insights in my email updates that I don’t share anywhere else.   Thanks so much for stopping by and until next time, remember to eat consciously, because the world needs a healthy and vibrant you! Welcome! My guest today is Melissa Kathryn, who is a certified holistic nutritionist, weight-loss and lifestyle expert. She is a transformational coach and international best-selling author and speaker. She is the owner and founder of Melissa Kathryn, LLC, which is a holistic weight loss and lifestyle practice. From her home in California, Melissa helps hundreds of women around the world to transform their bodies and lives through the power of healthy living, nutrition, and fitness. Melissa has been featured in many publications and media shows. Her recent book is Eat Right for Your Archetype. You do not want to miss this conversation with Melissa! Melissa shares the following: Like many young women, Melissa remembers looking in the mirror, not liking what she saw, and attributing all of her problems to her weight. Emotional eating was the result as she became sensitive and over-reactive to body image issues. Melissa had an unhealthy relationship with her body and became a chronic dieter after college. Ten years later, she swung the other direction, becoming a nutritionist and doing fitness competitions. Six months later, however, she was back to her old, unhealthy habits! What was the problem? Melissa realized that she was “programmed to fail,” and didn’t think she was worthy of a healthy body. Melissa created a “One-Stop Shop” for women, encompassing nutrition, fitness, mindset, and lifestyle. How do we program ourselves for sustainable change in health? Build up self-care and love to stop sabotaging ourselves. Struggle IS our comfort zone! It’s what we know! Don’t live in the past with blame and regret. Recognize the connection and break FREE! Melissa shares and explains  her four archetypes at the root of who we are: The Avoider-“What I want isn’t possible.” The Sabotager-“I’m always going to be small and can’t reach higher.” The Perfectionist-“I’m not enough.” The Rebel-“It’s ALL or NOTHING.” Even though you may identify with all the archetypes, one will usually stand out to each person and help you understand your problems. To “fix” the problem, you work backwards to the ROOT. You weren’t always this way, so what event or influence caused it? You can take actions to shift your mind; the first action step is to become your biggest advocate and best friend. Melissa says a Self-Care Routine is essential. Learn the benefits of “mirror work” and incorporating more play and pleasure into life! “Where there is lack, you will fill the void with food, so figure out where the lack is.” Replace food with fun. Make a pleasure list of long and short-term things you want to do. “The more alive you feel, the less you want food as your sole love.” “If it’s not attainable and not sustainable, then it’s not maintainable.” Are you eating when you’re hungry? Are you stopping when you’re full? Are you eating out of boredom? Do you NEED all the food on your plate? Melissa discusses how to interpret the answers to these questions and more! Start with small changes. If you don’t work out, then begin with two days/week. You have to trust your body and learn to listen to it! Cravings are usually not from hunger. What do they mean? The Truth About Gluten with Dr. Tom O'Bryan

Welcome! My guest today is Dr. Tom O’Bryan, who is an internationally-recognized speaker and workshop leader about the health dangers of gluten. He is the founder of www.thedr.com and a visionary behind the paradigm shift at The Gluten Summit: A Grain of Truth. In this summit, 29 leading experts on gluten diseases and disorders met to discuss the issues. Check our resources below to find out more about the summit. Dr. Tom is here to discuss the complications of non-celiac gluten sensitivity, celiac disease, and autoimmune disease. Join us for this informative conversation! Dr. Tom discusses the following: Dr. Tom became known as “The Gluten Expert” after he and his wife successfully beat infertility 36 years ago by following the advice of 7 holistic health experts. His fame spread as he was able to help friends and neighbors with health issues by following the same program and helping hundreds of couples beat infertility. EVERY couple that he worked with had food sensitivity issues, and they were “throwing gasoline on the fire” with their gluten-rich diets. Gluten is THE MAIN CULPRIT WITH THE GREATEST IMPACT ON HEALTH! Symptoms can be varied and many, including seizures, rheumatoid arthritis, and infertility. Dr. Tom started his Certified Practitioners Program for medical professionals all over the world; it’s for those who understand “the big picture.” “If you have sensitivity to gluten, it will manifest itself wherever your weakest link is.” Doctors usually focus on celiac disease for ALL gluten sensitivity, but the proper term is “gluten-related disorder.” Gluten sensitivity will be manifest in the intestines as celiac, in the brain as ADD, and in the joints as RA---wherever YOUR weak link is. One in 100 people in the US have celiac disease, but 60% of people have a “wheat-related disorder.” “No human can digest gluten completely.” Dr. Tom explains how “pathogenic intestinal permeability” occurs because of gluten. Tests for gluten sensitivity are not accurate and comprehensive. Most test for ONE gluten issue when there are really over 60 components. Dr. Tom explains the elevated antibodies to the cerebellum, thyroid, and other organs. “The elimination diet is NOT the only answer to identify gluten sensitivity.” “Why would we eat a food that causes intestinal permeability in everyone?” Gluten can manifest itself in ANY tissue in the body. Going gluten-free can reverse some cancers and autoimmune diseases. Going gluten-free can alter the microbiome in the intestines—THE most important organ in the body! Dr. Tom explains how to use fermented vegetables, like sauerkraut, to foster a healthy microbiome in a gluten-free diet. The good fat in the gut is butyrate; get it from eating different colored vegetables—at least 1 pound each day! Dr. Tom explains his normal diet, even when traveling. He focuses on quality proteins and LOTS of veggies! Even ancient grains will still trigger sensitivity if you make antibodies to gluten. Wheat in Europe has less “fodmaps,” which may not produce the gas and bloating that American wheat does, but the immune response is still triggered. Dr. Tom explains how to guard against accidental gluten exposure and inadvertent exposure with his GI Shield digestive enzymes. Dr. Tom’s goal is to lessen the period of disability at the end of life, to help people stay active and healthy until death. Gluten adds to the “wearing-down” process that can be the last ½ or 1/3 of a normal lifetime. Dr. Tom cites an ADHD study involving gluten and explains the details. It is recommended that every ADHD-diagnosed person be tested for gluten sensitivity. Gluten-free products? Are they helpful and safe? Dr. Tom says that they are NOT healthy and nutrient-poor. Dr. Tom explains an FDA study that proves that most gluten-free products are not safe because of the danger of cross-contamination. She is also a public speaker and essential oils expert who has been featured on several national TV shows. She will share with us how women can balance their hormones with essential oils and other methods. Dr. Mariza shares the following: Mariza feels like she comes from a “lineage of hormone chaos.” Her grandmother, mother, and then she suffered from hormonal imbalance. Mariza always leads her clients (and herself) into natural solutions. Her problems led to her research on “hormone magic” to get the body working ideally and get energy back. Toxicity, poor diet, and a fast-paced lifestyle contribute to hormone imbalance for many women. Mariza shares her #1 tip for managing cortisol, the stress hormone: green smoothies! She shares her simple daily recipe and ways to add creativity. Essential oils are an essential part of Mariza’s daily routine! “Essential oils have no side effects, only side benefits!”  Mariza shares how to use them for grounding, motivation, balance, and sleep support. Mariza uses essential oils in diffusers, topically, and breathes them in. For maximum benefit, they need to be reapplied several times daily, but they yield instantaneous results! For sustained lifestyle changes, daily habits are the cornerstones for success. She gives the following tips: Give yourself permission to take care of YOU. Start each day with a green smoothie, matcha tea, or warm lemon water. Have some sort of ritual for journaling, gathering thoughts, or meditation. Use essential oils to “oil up.” Feed your body well during the day. Have a nighttime ritual to prepare for sleep. Mariza’s best tip for burned-out women is to use detox and supplements in addition to the other components already mentioned. Mariza shares how her system has brought successfully balanced hormones to her mother. Mariza’s passion is to help women to find ways to integrate into their lifestyle ways to bring their bodies back to where they want it to be. “You CAN reset your body when it’s not working like you want it to!” How to reach Mariza and more: www.drmariza.com Now it’s your turn! Welcome! My guest today is Ricki Heller, who is an RHN, Ph. D., a holistic nutritionist, and special diet coach. She is also a whole foods chef and writer who shares sugar-free, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly recipes on her blog. Ricki is the author of two cookbooks and Living Candida Free. She is the associate editor of Simply Gluten Free magazine, and has written for various publications. Ricki uses her speaking engagements at live events, along with her other platforms, to teach people how to thrive on a Candida-free diet! Ricki shares the following about her story and her work: Ricki explains that Candida is a necessary organism in the human digestive tract, but causes problems when it grows out of control, feeding exclusively on SUGAR! Ricki is a self-described “case study” for Candida overgrowth, growing up with a sugar addiction that progressed to IBS, recurring yeast and sinus infections, and a regular dependence on antibiotic medications. Ricki cleaned up her diet, went to nutrition school, and felt great for 10 years before returning to old eating habits in 2008. When Ricki started her blog, she was amazed to hear from many people who suffered from the same health issues that she had. Ricki describes her diet today as “plant-based,” even though she truly has always preferred a vegetarian diet. Ricki explains the discrepancy between traditional medicine’s treatment of Candidiasis and holistic nutrition’s treatment of Candida overgrowth. Candida-related complex issues are usually the effect of something else in the diet. Candida symptoms include: vaginal yeast infections, rashes, itchy spots, athlete’s foot, oral thrush, toenail fungus, digestive distress, overwhelming fatigue, unnatural sugar cravings, and “foggy” brain. The main health issues related to Candida are leaky gut and its ramifications and the immune/allergic/inflammatory response. Causes of Candida include: antibiotic use, sugary/processed/refined foods, Rx or OTC medications, birth control pills, and stress. Severe Candida cases may need prescriptions, but there are several natural anti-fungal methods of treatment: change your diet, use coconut oil, grapefruit seed extract, pau d’arco tea, oil of oregano, and colloidal silver. Ricki explains the use of these items in detail. Since there are many strains of Candida that affect people differently, it’s important to rotate the use of the natural anti-fungals to minimize resistance and to take probiotics to replenish the digestive tract. Ricki has certain brands of probiotics that she recommends. Foods to avoid: sugar, sweeteners, fruits, processed foods, highly acidic foods, and dairy. Foods that kill Candida: coconut products, garlic, green juices (from vegetables only), salads of dark leafy greens, cabbage, nuts and seeds. Ricki allows unlimited vegetables, some legumes, and red-skinned potatoes on her plan. “If you NEVER want to deal with Candida again, then you can NEVER eat sugar again!” Ricki has recipes for baked goods using low-glycemic sweeteners, Stevia, coconut sugar, and xylitol. Ricki explains the benefits of her private members support group, The Sweet Life. Her tips for others undergoing dietary changes to combat Candida include: NO is easier than maybe. Don’t negotiate boundaries, but stick to them when confronted with temptation. Eating to combat Candida is a give-and-take with friends and family, especially in social situations. Let them know where you stand and why. Welcome! Today’s guest is “America’s Boomer Babe” and a fellow Iowan. Debra Atkinson is passionate about helping boomers live healthy lives in their second 50 years. She speaks frequently about active aging and has completed several Ironman Triathlon events. She has created a Forever Fit and Fab After 50 Checklist. Let’s hear more from Debra! Debra shares the following about active aging: Debra grew up with NO ambition to be an advocate for health and fitness, but found a passion for instruction. Debra always felt “older” than she was, and understands issues that boomers face. Her mission is to smooth the transition to make big differences in lifestyle choices. There is some “unlearning” that some people need to do around the following: “Fat makes you fat.” It turns out that healthy fats are good for us. “A healthy diet doesn’t need supplements.” Most of us eat diets that are insufficient in certain vitamins and minerals. There are baby steps we can all take to try new things, like adding to our diets nuts, avocados, coconut oil, fatty fish, eggs, and full-fat Greek yogurt. For people who “don’t like fish,” there are new ways to prepare it, and we all should consider fish oil supplements for omega-3’s. Debra recommends several supplement, like a high-quality multivitamin, magnesium, iron, melatonin, and DIM. In your 30’s: Muscle and bone mass start to decrease; we need supplements, adequate protein, and weight-lifting exercises. In your 40’s: More changes come and fatigue increases. Bad habits catch up! Focus on exercises that target major muscle groups. In your 50’s/60’s: Do more strength training and less cardio. Mix up long walks and HIT workouts for maximum benefit. Debra recommends 25-30 g of protein at each meal throughout the day, with a 4 oz. portion size at each meal. Ironically, active people need less protein and sedentary people need more! Debra discusses “crowding vs. compensating.” Concentrate on getting the proper nutrition, and you will “crowd out” the desire for what is unhealthy. Debra has tips for incorporating activity into a busy life. It’s all about prioritizing and aiming for small snatches of activity throughout the day.  Vigorous exercise should be done early in the day, and more calming activities later in the day. This matches with the body’s hormones. How to reach Debra and more: www.voiceforfitness.com www.voiceforfitness.com/foreverfitandfab  Check out her Forever Fit and Fab After 50 Checklist! Welcome! My guest today is Elaine De Santos, who struggled with health issues with her family until they took the steps to get healthy together. She is committed to helping families make the changes to get healthy. Elaine created an online meal planning tool with delicious, chef-created recipes that take 30 minutes or less to prepare. The ingredients are easy to find and recipes can be adjusted according to serving sizes. Her website can help you create shopping lists, too. Check out the Resource section below for more information! Elaine shares the following about her journey: Elaine’s family (husband and two young children) was full of health issues, including coughs, congestion, breathing issues, eczema, and migraines. Elaine’s wake-up call came one morning when intense pain prevented her from getting out of bed. The problem? Shingles! “There HAS to be a better way!” Elaine found a local MD who practiced integrative medicine and began listening to podcasts and radio shows for more information. Her husband’s migraines worsened to the point of having vision problems also; Elaine decided the family needed to learn to eat better. The first major change was to go Gluten-Free, even though Elaine didn’t join in until later. Her husband and children saw immediate improvement when gluten was eliminated. The family decided to stick with a Paleo-style diet, focusing on clean, lean meats and healthy vegetables and fats. Even though they did use some GF processed food substitutes in the beginning, as a “bridge” to this new system of eating, Elaine doesn’t recommend those GF products for the long term because of the added sugar. The family slowly transitioned to real, whole food and eliminated processed foods altogether. Elaine went on to become a certified transformational nutrition coach. Her top tips for improved nutrition? Have a PLAN that you can trust. Eat seasonally and local, wherever you live. “Batch-cook” on the weekends. Keep meals in the freezer for those busy weeknights. Chop and prepare fresh veggies ahead of time. Use a slow cooker. Welcome! My guest today is Alisa Fleming, who is a great resource for people who want to go dairy-free. She’s here to share her knowledge and expertise. Join us! Alisa shares the following about her experience with dairy: Alisa was allergic to milk as an infant, but never knew it until adulthood. She spent her childhood and early adulthood being sick to the point of having an ER visit about once a week—all because of the allergy to milk protein! Alisa HAD to make the change to dairy-free in a time when not a lot of information was available She started a website about ten years ago to share helpful information with others. Common symptoms of milk allergy include digestive issues, acne, restless leg syndrome, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and narcolepsy. The proteins in different milks affect people differently. About 40% of people allergic to cow’s milk can tolerate goat’s milk! Great substitutes for milk include almond, cashew, and coconut milk. Coconut milk works great for cooking and baking. Alisa shares her technique for making cashew cream—it’s easy! One of Alisa’s favorite go-to meals is Peanut Noodles. Ingredients include peanut butter, soy sauce, coconut milk, crushed red pepper, ginger, broccoli, and rice noodles. Tune in to hear how to make this delicious dish! Many dairy products have acceptable substitutes that taste great! Alisa shares her favorite subs for yogurt, whipped cream, ice cream, and creamers. Sometimes “accidental” dairy exposure happens, especially in restaurants. Alisa advises the following about dining out: Call ahead or email to inquire about dairy-free options. Be clear about the level of concern and the reasons. When traveling, seek out chains that you can trust. Be wary of buttered foods like meats, buns, steamed veggies, and pasta. Alisa’s website has a list of restaurants with dairy-free options! When living dairy-free, you can get adequate calcium without milk. Welcome! My guest today is Naomi Judge, who is a naturopath and clinical nutritionist. She is an expert in women’s hormonal health and weight loss from  Sydney, Australia. Naomi specializes in helping women with elevated estrogen levels and thyroid disorders. She has helped thousands regain their vitality and shed unwanted weight with her program, Breakthrough. She works with clients on a one-on-one basis and offers detox and diet plans. Let’s jump right in with Naomi! Naomi discusses the following about her work: Naomi has been seeing clients as a naturopath since 2007, when she began observing patterns in women’s weight issues. She decided that there must be more going on other than the less food/more exercise connection. The commonalities she noticed, and now focuses on with her clients, are hormones and food intolerance. Her Breakthrough program shoots down the old theory that eating less calories and exercising more will always yield weight loss. Naomi says focusing on the macronutrients in our diets is critical. She recommends finding the right balance of fats, proteins, and carbs in three meals/daily with minimal snacking. Naomi does a lot of food intolerance tests with her clients; the most common foods to remove are gluten, dairy, soy, and eggs. Naomi shares recommendations for women in balancing their ratio of fat, protein, and carbs. Half of your plate should be vegetables! Regarding exercise, Naomi says that most of us should STOP doing what we’re doing—because it’s NOT working! Naomi’s exercise recommendations focus on “yin” activities such as walking for enjoyment, yoga, pilates, stretching, and swimming. Strength training and cardio are added in sparingly. Listening to your body and being in tune with it are crucial. Too much intense exercise can be bad for your health! Hormone balance is a critical piece of women’s health, and estrogen or testosterone dominance can be determined by where your body collects weight. The key to thyroid health is diet and balancing blood sugar. Naomi recommends iodine, selenium, and zinc in our diets. The relationship between cortisol and weight gain is proven. It’s determined by how your body regulates blood sugar and deals with stress. Ridding the body of toxins is vital to optimum gut, liver, and kidney function. Naomi explains how her program is a gentle approach to detox and cleansing. How to reach Naomi and more: www.naomijudge.com  (Her website has information about her Kickstart 3-day cleanse and meal plan and her Breakthrough programs and retreats.  She has a new book coming out soon about women’s health!) Welcome! My guest today is Dr. Heather Paulson, who went from marine biologist to naturopathic oncologist! In fact, she’s one of the few board certified naturopathic oncologists in the US. She obtained her degree from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Scottsdale, AZ. Heather did her residency work in Goshen, IN, and practices there at the Women’s Retreat Center. Let’s hear what Dr. Heather has to say! Our conversation covers the following: Heather was drawn into a love for marine biology by the magical sound of a humpback whale. In fact, she still spends her vacations face down in the water! As she worked in Canada, and then the redwood forests of CA, she became aware of the toxins and pollutants in the environment.  She made the connection between environmental toxins and the toxins that threaten the physical health of people, and knew she could impact more people for good health in the naturopathic field. Heather encourages her clients in cancer prevention using the acronym, “the GREAT life”: G—Get Active R—Reduce your Risk E—Eat for Life A—Add Meaning T—Think Green Heather’s diet recommendations include cruciferous veggies, berries, spices, and warm cereals.  Heather has a lot to say about cleansing and detox, using the metaphor of “picking up trash from riverbeds.” Cleansing doesn’t just refer to nutrition, but relationships, daily schedule, and spiritual practices. “Detox” technically refers to what happens in the liver, but “cleansing” refers to the effects on other parts of the body. Detox is important for cancer survivors because it helps get rid of the chemicals that build up from cancer treatments. Heather’s protocol for cleansing includes removing the “junk,” cleaning up the diet, and doing supplements. Heather’s advice for cancer prevention include getting vitamin D levels checked, and focusing on adding meaning to your life.  “People with a greater sense of purpose and community, prayer, and meditation have more longevity and a lower cancer risk.” How to reach Dr. Paulson and more: www.drheatherpaulson.com www.drheatherpaulson.com/cleanse Visit her website to find out more about Better Nutrition, including meal plans, classes, webinars, and videos. Welcome! My guest today is Dr. Peter Kan, an experienced physician specializing in thyroid issues. He is a board-certified chiropractic neurologist who is certified in functional medicine. He has extensive training in the management of autoimmune disorders and has formulated a unique approach called “neuro-metabolic integration.” Dr. Kan was born in Taiwan and came to the US at the age of 13. He appreciates both Eastern and Western medicine and believes in the body’s God-given ability to heal and regulate itself. People come from all across the country to visit his practice in Gilbert, Arizona.  My conversation with Dr. Kan covers the following: He learned about the body’s holistic ability to heal itself when helping his father treat liver cancer with dietary changes and supplements. His practice is 90% complex Hashimoto’s cases and other thyroid symptoms of brain fog, depression, memory loss, and balance issues. “This is not my work; I am chosen to do this.” Dr. Kan explains “brain fog” as the feeling of having a cloud over you and not being able to focus on and complete tasks. Brain fog is essentially the inability of the brain to utilize energy and activate brain cells. The brain cells require fuel and activation for proper function. The brain needs oxygen and glucose for fuel. Dr. Kan explains how to assess and improve your circulation, gut issues, and blood sugar! Glucose and brain function are so closely tied together that Alzheimer’s and dementia are now referred to as Type 3 diabetes! You can assess your symptoms to find out if you are hypoglycemic or insulin-resistant. Dr. Kan explains. Activation of the brain cells has to do with each lobe (region) of the brain and its specific function. Dr. Kan’s brain-based therapy is designed to treat the specific brain area. “Healthy thyroid function requires healthy brain function.” Brain function can be the missing piece of a patient’s thyroid issue care. Dr. Kan discusses ketogenic diets, which use fats as the main source of fuel for the brain. He concludes that they are not right for everyone but require individual assessment. Dr. Kan gives the benefits of HIT (high intensity training), which is not about building muscle, but about the cascade of hormones that occurs. Dr. Kan explains the relationship between gut health, thyroid function, and balance issues. Dr. Kan’s neuro-metabolic integration incorporates all aspects in his treatment approach. Dr. Kan explains some of the various tests he performs on clients to diagnose their problems. “You can’t focus on one issue at the exclusion of the other body systems, but find the issue that’s the most important, basic, and obvious.” Toxicity is another variable in health and wellness that cannot be ignored. The brain, nutrition, and toxicity are all related! How to reach Dr. Kan and more: www.askdrkan.com  (Find the link to Dr. Kan’s e-course for self-assessment of your issues!) Welcome! My guest today is Jolene Brighten, who earned her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the National College of Natural Medicine. She also received her bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science and completed the coursework in Molecular Nutrition from Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo. Jolene has had extensive training in integrative women’s health and autoimmune disease management and is a practicing Holistic Pelvic Care Practitioner. Because she developed Hashimoto’s disease during her pregnancy, she has become a strong advocate for the Hashimoto’s community, with a special emphasis in fertility, pregnancy, and post-partum thyroiditis. She is the author of Healing Your Body Naturally After Childbirth: The New Mom’s Guide to Navigating the Fourth Trimester. She has a lot to say about these topics, so join us for more! Dr. Brighten talks about the following: Dr. Brighten was always a “sick kid” with digestive issues from age 7-17, which eventually led to her specialization in Hashimoto’s. She studied nutrition, became a vegetarian, and began to investigate the Paleo diet. “Paleo” has the misconception of being about “eating lots of meat,” but it really focuses on whole foods, fruits, vegetables, fats, and meats—while eliminating processed foods. While the Paleo diet improved her blood sugar and hormonal balance, she still had inflammation, allergies, and food sensitivities that worsened during her pregnancy. Dr. Brighten has the perspective of having tried several different diet approaches along with her extensive nutrition education. Dr. Brighten’s current diet includes lots of vegetables and grass-fed meats. She avoids dairy, gluten, soy, and limits eggs. Despite her best dietary efforts, her continued symptoms included fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, and depression. Dr. Brighten explains why pregnancy and post-partum brings an increased risk of Hashimoto’s disease, based on the immune system and adrenal gland response. To reduce the risk of autoimmune disease and Hashimoto’s , women should focus on omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D levels, gut health, and hormonal health. Other issues that are important for women are stress management, proper sleep, and blood sugar regulation. Even though a healthy mom doesn’t guarantee a healthy baby, Dr. Brighten recommends loading up on antioxidants and healthy fats before becoming pregnant. Autoimmune disorders are largely genetic and there are tests that can be done to assess your risk. There is a relationship between your diet’s fat content and your libido! Curious? Dr. Brighten explains. Regular meals make good blood sugar levels, which make happy adrenals, which make happy sex hormones!  Find out why you should add garlic, cayenne pepper, and ginger to your foods. Welcome! My guest today is Dr. Steven Masley, who is an accomplished physician, chef, and nutritionist. He is also the author of four cookbooks. I’ve been a big fan and follower of his for a long time and am excited to have him on the show! He has a new book coming out soon on the topic of healthy fats, so join us to hear more! Dr. Steven discusses the following : His new book is an outgrowth of the discussion about the REAL cause of heart disease, which is metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes. His plan is based on clean protein, smart fat, fiber, and flavor! “Smart fats” include nuts (almonds, pecans, pistachios, walnuts, hazelnuts, and macadamias), salmon, sardines, avocado, dark chocolate, and olive oil. He discusses the controversy about oils, their processing, and their uses. Regarding oils, you have to know your smoke point! Some oils are safe for cooking and some are NOT! Neutral oils are those with no proven benefits or harmful effects, like grapeseed oil and unclarified butter. The goal is 5 servings of smart fats daily. There are smart carbs and bad carbs. The smart carbs are those with more fiber and a lower glycemic response. Nut flours:  Is there a difference from regular grain flours? Aim for 30-40 grams of fiber daily. Dr. Steven sums up his principles with four points: Know the difference between smart, neutral, and bad fats. Eat more smart fat! Add fiber, clean protein, and flavor! Don’t cook fat at the wrong temp to make it toxic! Dr. Steven has a 30-day meal plan and numerous recipes on his website and in his new book. He shows you how to turn back the clock on aging, and how to prevent hypertension, heart disease, and memory loss. He can help you lose weight and feel great! Interested? Welcome! My guest today is Dr. Keesha Ewers, who is the founder of the Functional Sexology Institute. Keesha is a psychotherapist and holds a PhD in Sexology. She uses functional medicine and the principles of Ayurvedic medicine to focus on women’s libido.  Keesha covers the following areas of this topic: Keesha suffered from rheumatoid arthritis but completely reversed those symptoms. She noticed that her own sexual libido was lacking, and saw the same thing in many clients. She used her master’s degree background in Ayurvedic medicine to address the issue of women’s libido. Since this is such a delicate subject, Keesha focuses on creating a safe environment for clients to share their “libido story.” Only 30% of medical providers ever ask patients about sexuality except in the context of STD’s and contraception. The beliefs we have as adults were wired in our childhood. These issues include body image, pressure to be perfect, and other events and behaviors. Some patients have resistance and some aren’t willing to do the work to rewire their mindset. Keesha shares a study that shows that 69% of women in committed relationships for over a year do not experience spontaneous sexual desire. Keesha says that trauma and abuse require deeper emotional work. She uses three modalities to address trauma issues and explains each: EMDR, Brain Spotting, and Clinical Hypnotherapy. Keesha explains the neurotransmitters and adrenal function that play into the Fight or Flight and Feed or Breed responses. Women are falling through the cracks between medical science and behavioral science because we are so specialized in medicine today. Keesha addresses daily chronic stress issues and uses genetic tests to show physiological reasons for sexual libido problems. There are several big factors in libido issues in addition to your “story,” like physical issues, mental issues, and emotional/relationship conflict. Keesha advocates treating clients holistically instead of compartmentalizing our problems. Keesha also discusses the use of bioidentical hormones and the inflammatory responses that can affect sexual desire. Summer is here to share how she turned her life and health around and how she helps her clients every day. Summer covers the following topics in our conversation: Summer describes herself as an “unresourced” teen who turned to drugs, which took a huge toll in her health. Within the desire to change her life, she studied herbal medicine, did a cleanse, and experienced a moment of clarity and freedom from the anxiety that had dominated her life. “This feels wonderful! How can I feel like this ALL the time?” Despite her studies in herbal medicine, Summer grew sicker and sicker with food allergies, exhaustion, adrenal fatigue, hives, and anxiety. Her turning point was when she decided to rebuild her gut, using fermented foods and probiotics. Today, she has NO food allergies, even though her journey to health took about TEN years! “Your actions right now are confirming everything you believe about yourself.” Summer’s Gut Rebuilding Program is based on the following components: 8 weeks of training 3 coaching calls per month Probiotics Proper foods Herbalism Self-care Emotional detox Another portion of Summer’s work is based on the principle of “Scheduling Your Health,” which is how you prioritize your life, exercise, and schedule. Welcome! My guest today is Magdalena Wszelaki, who is a certified nutrition coach and an expert in hormone health. She creates beautiful recipes for healing yourself naturally using food as medicine, which is what this show is all about! Join us! Magdalena shares the following about hormone health: Magdalena’s personal journey includes struggling with hormones, Graves disease, dominance, and Candida. Healing starts with the gut! The first steps for Magdalena were to combat Candida, heavy metals, and parasites. Journaling is an important step in becoming your own health detective. Retraining the mind is part of the healing process. Cravings are the body’s way to tell us what it needs. The different cravings you experience are evidence of mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Magdalena’s favorite ways to approach hormone balance focuses on the three aspects of digestion, liver, and sugar levels. The health of your gut bacteria directly relates to estrogen levels. Onions, garlic, parsley, and cruciferous vegetables are good for liver health. When Magdalena first came to America, she was shocked at the prevalence of sugar in EVERYTHING! A good way to remedy sugar levels is to have a protein, fat, and fiber-packed breakfast. One recommendation to incorporate fiber is to have 2 Tbsp. of flax seeds daily (that helps with hormone issues also). Magdalena discusses the big culprit hormones for fatigue, weight loss, and blood sugar levels. Tips to start improving hormone health: For breakfast, try smoothies or savory muffins. For dinner, eat early and eat light. Magdalena gives recipes for steamed vegetables with homemade dressing, and brown rice or quinoa. “Make breakfast your best friend, lunch an acquaintance, and dinner an enemy.” How to Reach Magdalena and more: www.hormonesbalance.com www.cookingforbalance.com www.hormonesbalance.com/gift  (Check out the free gift Magdalena offers to FAM listeners!) Welcome! My guest today is a dietician whom I met at a conference last August. I’ve become a fan of Cassie Bjork and her “Eating to be Skinny” approach to health and nutrition. I’m excited to have her on the show today! Cassie describes her work as being a “dietician detective” in which she looks for evidence and symptoms in her clients, and then puts the puzzle pieces together. “We help you narrow down the suspects included in your personal crime scene that keep you from being skinny and living a healthy life.” Cassie shares the following about her life, her work, and her nutritional recommendations: Her own sugar addiction brought her to the lowest and unhealthiest point in her life, so she got off the blood sugar roller coaster and made some changes. America’s biggest nutritional problem is SUGAR ADDICTION! Forget the low-fat, low-calorie approach to trying to lose weight! Cassie identifies some key areas that are usually the missing puzzle pieces in nutrition: keeping inflammation down, managing stress, supporting thyroid function, gut health, hormonal balance, proper sleep, avoiding artificial sweeteners and processed foods, and being careful with alcohol consumption. In making nutrition changes, gut health is the top priority! Cassie shares her “three-prong approach” about what we SHOULD be doing, including the supplements we should all take every day. Cassie’s formula for nutrition is “PFC Balance.” Her template can be customized for anyone, but use protein, fat, and carbs in balance with eating every 3 hours to “stay ahead of the hunger.” She also shares sample meal plans that she uses every day! Hormone balance is crucial! Cassie explains the relationship between insulin and glucagon in the body’s fat burning/fat storing processes. Fad diets are not usually the answer! Many women try intermittent fasting and ketogenic diets and then come to Cassie for help. “When we deprive our bodies of food, nutrients, and healthy fats, then our metabolism slows down to conserve energy. That’s why low-fat and low-calorie DOES NOT WORK! Nutrition is not about low-fat and low-calorie, but about refueling with whole foods that the body needs and is designed to run on.” How to reach Cassie and more: www.dieticiancassie.com  (Her first website—she still blogs her regularly.) www.healthysimplelife.com  (Her company website with tips and info from her and her staff.) www.rfvitamins.com  (Her newest endeavor, offering quality supplements.) She and I met at the PaleoFX 2015 conference in Austin, TX, and I’ve been excited to have her on the show. Join us! She became really sick and then discovered Paleo and CrossFit. It was when she lived in China in 2008 that she began focusing on gut health, and this focus is what led her to specialize her practice in all aspects of gut health. Grace shares the following about gut health: Gut health is important for many reasons, but one reason is that 80% of the immune system is in the gut. Operating without proper gut health is like operating with only half of your brain! Grace uses a “tree” picture to illustrate each person’s microbiome, showing the branches of the different bacteria found in the gut. Many problems and health disorders are caused when the needed varieties of bacteria aren’t present. One problem is the presence of too many antibiotics in our society! If you aren’t feeling well, you probably need to replenish the needed bacteria. Grace discusses the inexpensive tests that can be done to assess the composition of the gut. Dysbiosis or SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) is common in the upper gut; sometimes a low carb diet can help. Grace explains the process of “weeding” as it applies to monitoring your gut flora. Ryan discusses the following: Ryan knows how difficult it is to maintain a balance between work and other areas of life.  He prioritizes family time and creates an environment for success.  He recommends two books that have been instrumental in his life. Ryan’s symptoms included pain in his fingers and toes and extreme fatigue.  He saw a rheumatologist who diagnosed him with an autoimmune disease called psoriatic arthritis, for which the only treatment was methotrexate, a chemotherapy drug. Ryan decided to see a naturopath and do whatever he needed to avoid the chemotherapy drugs.  He made changes in nutrition and stress and slowly saw symptoms subside. The nutrition changes Ryan made focused on severely eliminating the “Big Three” of gluten, dairy, and sugar.  He focused on eating more fruits and vegetables and being more cognizant of what he was eating.  Listen to learn more! Ryan also took steps to reduce stress by phasing out some work, learning to say “no,” and using Hal Elrod’s Miracle Morning system to change his life.  Ryan explains the system in detail. Ryan has taken practical steps to clear his schedule and make it work to his advantage.  He blocks off one day a week for whatever he wants to do and is careful about over-scheduling appointments.  He says “yes” to things that move him toward his goals, but says “no” to things that move him away from his goals. Sam describes the characteristics of the typical patient he sees in his clinic and his treatment philosophy: Female, aged 35-50 Experiencing chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, insomnia, depression, blood sugar issues, obesity around the belly, endometriosis, hormonal issues, and autoimmune issues In traditional medicine, these patients are treated with one protocol or another with tremendous hope, but nothing really helps. He teaches patients “How to MacGyver Your Health”—low-tech solutions with a super high payoff “Knowledge is power, so the most empowering thing I can do is to give knowledge to a patient as to why what’s going on is happening to them.” Join us as Sam shares the following about stress, adrenals, and health: Sam explains the Brain Imbalance between men and women.  It all has to do with the receptors on each side of the brain and why women are more prone to chronic stress and anxiety.  You don’t want to miss Dr. Shay’s eye-opening explanation! Under chronic stress, the body is wired to survive.  The body will ALWAYS prioritize survival over aesthetics and comfort.  Using this principle, Sam explains on a cellular level what happens in the body under stress and how health is affected. All roads lead to stress!  There are three categories of stress:  biochemical, physical, and emotional stress.  Dr. Shay has built a framework for treating his patients that revolves around his Ten Points of Wellness:  (Listen for a more detailed explanation of each.) Brain Bowel Body Burst Bio-toxins Bio-nutrients Breakfast—THE most important and easiest to change! Welcome!  My guest today is Bridgit Danner, who is an expert in women’s health.  She is the host of the Women’s Wellness Radio podcast.  I met Bridgit recently at a conference in California and am excited to have her on the show! Bridgit is the owner of Blue Sky Wellness Studio in Portland, OR, which is a clinic offering naturopathy, massage, chiropractic, and acupuncture to its patients.  Bridgit has been in practice for 11 years, utilizing the principles of Chinese medicine.  She had her own health struggles as she experienced postpartum depression, so she boosted her nutrition, turned to functional medicine, and became passionate to help others. Bridgit shares the following about women’s health and fertility: At age 35, peri-menopause begins.  Ovarian function declines and hormone levels decrease. Men’s sperm counts and hormone levels decline with age also. For increased fertility, decrease your stress levels. Men and women should do several things jointly to increase fertility: Exercise improves circulation in the genital area—and fertility. Nutrition is important!  Bridgit shares tips on fats, proteins, carbs, and vegetables to maintain optimum health. Superfoods can easily be included daily as nuts, seeds, and berries. Supplements (within reason) can help improve fertility. Some herbs and teas have proven helpful in fertility. Bridgit shares some tips for good health that apply to men only.  Join us for the details! Welcome!  My guests today are Sarah and Aaron Sanchez, who are a husband and wife team who do The Lyme Voice podcast.  They are passionate about working together to share information to those coping with the disease.   Sarah had battled Lyme disease symptoms for 17 years but was undiagnosed.  She was told it was fibromyalgia and then chronic fatigue syndrome before a correct diagnosis.  She suffered immensely, researched Lyme, and found there was not much information available.  Sarah and Aaron decided to begin The Lyme Voice podcast to prevent others from suffering unnecessarily like Sarah did for all those years. Sarah and Aaron share the following about their story: In June 2013, when Sarah was diagnosed with Lyme, she suffered a myriad of symptoms that greatly affected her quality of life. She found the Gerson treatment, which is based on organic juices and coffee enemas.  She attended the Envita Medical Center in CA for treatment. Sarah describes her juicing process and the basics and benefits of coffee enemas.  Many times the symptoms of Lyme are masked by other symptoms and other stressors on the body. Lyme is hard to diagnose, and the tests for it are not very accurate. Sarah shares her daily regimen now, including juices, enemas, supplements, exercise, and yoga. Sarah and Aaron give advice to others who may be suffering from Lyme symptoms, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed. Lyme disease is a worldwide epidemic, with over 300,000 diagnosed in 2014.  Join me for this conversation with Aaron and Sarah to learn more! Welcome to today’s show!  My guests are Emma and Carla Papas, also known as “The Merrymaker Sisters.”  They are health and happiness advocates and passionate health coaches from Australia.  Their website will inspire you with paleo recipes and tips for healthy lifestyles.  Join us for more! Their journey really began in 2012 when Emma discovered her gluten intolerance.  Carla joined her in her endeavor to improve her health by changing to a paleo diet.  They embraced the new diet together.  Carla posted photos of the new foods and recipes they created, which led to their blog and then their website.  They wanted to learn how food can become our medicine and then share those findings with others. The sisters share the following about their journey: Their diets today include lots of vegetables, chicken, and fish, with very little red meat. They don’t always eat three set meals every day. They advocate listening to your body as to what it needs. They shop farmers’ markets for fresh, seasonal produce. They eat NO refined sugars, gluten, dairy (except butter!), grains, or beans. They encourage “intuitive eating,” which is all about listening to your body and how it reacts to certain food, and being open to change and new ideas. They actually schedule their meal-prep time in their calendar. As much as possible, they prep ahead on Sunday for the week by preparing large amounts of protein and vegetables. One tip is to prepare extras for dinner and package them up for tomorrow’s lunch. The key is to be organized and confident about healthy eating. A positive mindset is important. The sisters use affirmations daily to focus on positivity, gratefulness, and accountability. The sisters each share a favorite recipe that you don’t want to miss! You WILL be encouraged by listening to Emma and Carla.  Their fun-loving attitude about food and life is contagious, so don’t miss our conversation! Welcome!  My guest today is Dr. Ritamarie, who is a specialist in endocrine imbalances.  She focuses on thyroid, adrenal, and insulin issues, and is here to discuss adrenal fatigue.  She has a long and rich history of working with patients in the area of nutritional endocrinology. As a young person, Dr. Ritamarie suffered from adrenal fatigue and leaky gut issues but she never connected the symptoms with her unhealthy lifestyle.  She suspected the connection and did research on her own, then started cleansing and rebuilding her system on her own.  She has had NO sugar or caffeine for 30 years!  Her passion became teaching others what she had learned about health and nutrition. Dr. Ritamarie discusses the following topics: There is a connection to adrenal imbalance, thyroid issues, blood sugar imbalance, and digestion. She founded the Institute of Nutritional Endocrinology to train health practitioners. There are some common patterns, but also some unique differences in the symptoms of adrenal imbalance.  She shares six specific symptoms that you may be experiencing! Dr. Ritamarie shares the Seven Pillars of Vibrant Health that must be in balance.  It’s NOT ONLY nutrition that matters! Stress, sleep, and mindset are probably the main areas in which most people need to change habits for positive health. There are Three Pillars of Care for Successful Practitioners.  You have to be a good example to help others change for the better! There is a correlation between sleep deprivation and insulin resistance.  Most people need 7-9 hours nightly for optimum overall health. Dr. Ritamarie has some specific Do’s and Don’t’s regarding nutritional changes to heal adrenal function.  Listen and learn! She has some exercises to help people learn to let go of limiting beliefs.  What is it that is holding you back? She briefly describes “transforming stress,” which takes negative stressors and reframes them in a positive way. To begin to change, focus on breathing, appreciation, and eating REAL food! If you’re suffering from adrenal imbalance, you can expect a profound change in 3-6 months of commitment to her program. Dr. Ritamarie has many years’ experience in functional medicine with an emphasis on adrenal imbalance.  Her tips can help anyone who suffers from the common symptoms.  Join me to learn more, and check out the resources below! Welcome!  Our episode today comes from our recent live webinar with Dr. Chantell Reagan, a wife and mom who has been a pharmacist for over 20 years.  Her career includes working in managed care and consulting, and now is focused on functional medicine and nutraceuticals.  Join us! Chantell began the journey to functional medicine as a result of her oldest son’s diagnosis of ADHD in preschool.  He was prescribed meds to manage behavior, anger, and hyperactivity. He also tried behavioral therapy, which had some success, but didn’t address the root cause. Chantell researched the link between ADHD and gluten and found surprising results.  When the family went on a GF diet, she noticed significant improvements in his attitude and behavior.  To change the family to GF, she started with easy swaps, then progressed to eliminating red dye, processed foods, dairy, and common allergens. Chantell shares the following about ADHD and alternative treatments: There are shocking statistics about the increase in ADHD diagnoses in American children.   Even more shocking are the statistics about the number of children currently on prescription medications for ADHD. The Gut-Brain Connection is vital for understanding ADHD.  Chantell explains the connection and the importance of probiotics. Another key component in ADHD is mineral and vitamin deficiencies.  “Simple mineral deficiencies can manifest themselves as ADHD, so supplements can work as well as prescription medications.” Chantell shares her “4 S’s” Protocol for treating ADHD symptoms:  sugar, sleep, stress, and smart supplementation.  Join us for the details! Choose supplements carefully to insure quality.  Chantell recommends the top 6 supplements to use in treating ADHD symptoms. Essential oils can be very effective in treating ADHD symptoms, especially vetiver, cedarwood, and lavender.  Listen in for more details! Maria’s work revolves around four aspects of proper bodily function: Liver health—A 21-day purification system is designed to optimize liver function. Gut health—Maria’s clients typically experience a variety of digestive issues. Blood sugar balance—This is vitally important as it determines how insulin functions. Nutrient density—Many people need to increase the nutrition in the foods they eat.  Maria can show you how! Maria describes and explains in detail the four phases of the menstrual cycle.  Every woman should listen.  It will help you understand your body and your moods.  Maria also tells about one particular herb that can help offset PMS issues, along with how to plan ahead for the menopause years---even when still in your 30’s!  You don’t want to miss her ONE TIP for how to make a small change with the biggest payoff for your health.  Join us for more! My conversation with Gerald covers the following topics: His unusual career path, which began with working as a sales rep, then leaving the industry to move to Asia.  He obtained his MBA degree, learned about Chinese medicine, then returned to the US and became a nutritional consultant.  Listen for all the details! He opened The Healing Body clinic in 2010 and began treating patients with side effects from the very same medications he used to sell! Welcome!  My guest today is Dr. Greg Lee, one of the co-founders of Two Frogs Healing Center in Frederick, MD.  This episode was prompted by a listener request for more information about Lyme disease.  Greg has become an expert at successfully treating patients with Lyme disease after beginning his career in the totally unrelated field of aerospace engineering.  Join me for Greg’s amazing story! Greg details the following about his life’s journey and work: Three simple words catapulted Greg into his current path: “FOLLOW YOUR BLISS.” Greg focused on patients’ chronic illnesses, treated his first Lyme patient 17 years ago, and has treated hundreds since then. Greg and a colleague developed a treatment protocol for Lyme disease that is based on customization for each patient. Greg learned the benefits of detoxification treatments from a colleague in Portland, OR, who specializes in traditional Chinese medicine. Some of Greg’s Lyme treatments include electrodermal scans, genetic analyses, cupping, herbal treatments, laser treatments, liposomal applications, and essential oils. Even though Greg specializes in Lyme disease treatment, he also treats patients for mold toxicity, parasitic infections, bacterial infections, fibromyalgia, and multiple chronic conditions. Most Lyme patients are actually suffering from 4-6 different infections. Lyme disease is prevalent all over the world and in almost every season and climate. COMPLETE HEALING IS POSSIBLE!  Greg sees it in 30-35% of his Lyme patients. There is a nutritional component to Greg’s treatments, all of which are intended to reduce inflammation. Greg also talks about Lyme prevention, transmission, and the emotional component of treatment.  Join us to hear Greg’s advice to Lyme sufferers, which is illustrated by the famous “Stockdale Syndrome.”  I hope you’re curious to hear more from Greg! Welcome!  I’m excited to introduce today’s guest, Dr. John Whitcomb, who is my personal doctor.  He is a brilliant and talented physician and functional medicine practitioner in Brookfield, WI, and he has a long and distinguished career.  He grew up in India as the son of missionaries, then attended Johns Hopkins University and Yale Medical School.  He is board-certified in internal medicine, emergency medicine, disaster medicine, and holistic and integrative medicine.  He is board-certified by the American Academy of Anti-Aging and has completed the only masters’ program in Metabolic and Functional Medicine at the University of South Florida.  Dr. John is currently completing a masters’ program in Integrative Cancer Care.  Join us for this exciting conversation! While practicing emergency medicine, Dr. John realized that doctors were waiting too late to treat illnesses instead of going back to the source to find out what is causing the disease.  He has traced several of the most common chronic illnesses in the US to ONE SOURCE.  That source is dysfunctional glucose metabolism.  Listen to learn the relationship between blood sugar and heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and kidney failure. Dr. John says that Americans have been distracted concerning heart disease by blaming high cholesterol.  “It’s disordered glucose metabolism and carbohydrates that are the fundamental enemy of health.” In this episode, Dr. John discusses the following topics related to high cholesterol: When we eat more carbs than we need, the liver turns them into fat, then sends them via the bloodstream to various fat storage cells all over the body.  Dr. John has an easy-to-understand analogy to help anyone understand this concept. The relationship between HDL and LDL is crucial to understanding fat metabolism. High cholesterol can be “fixed” in under a month by simply eliminating carbs from the diet.   Dr. John shares his personal experience with lowering his cholesterol numbers by eating a 70% fat diet!  Listen to hear what he recommends. The AHA and ADA have convinced Americans that saturated fats are the cause of high cholesterol and related illnesses.  This simply isn’t true, and the truth is finally beginning to be told in medical journals. Know your “dashboard data.”  Dr. John says the numbers to notice are blood sugar, hemoglobin a1c, HDL, and insulin level. Dr. John’s ketogenic (high-fat) diet consists mostly of eggs, butter, and cheese. If you control your lipid metabolism, your body fat, and insulin level, then the inflammation is low, and your risks for leading chronic diseases are lowered. Two cautions on a ketogenic diet are making sure you get enough salt in your diet and making sure you don’t eat too much protein. Dr. John has fascinating information to share that will challenge what we have all been taught about diet and nutrition.  Join us to hear his explanations and experiences! Welcome!  My guest today is DJ White, who is the founder and CEO of P&P Journeys in Minnesota.  DJ is a Pilates instructor, personal trainer, wellness coach, corrective exercise specialist, power lifter, and champion body builder.  At age 40, DJ won the Regional Ms. Muscle Mania competition and has been featured by ESPN in a special about natural bodybuilding.  Her goal is to strengthen clients from the inside out—mentally, physically, and spiritually.  Her training involves lifestyle nutrition, establishing healthy habits, and physical training.  DJ believes that as you become a stronger person, your results extend into all aspects of life.  Join me to hear DJ’s fascinating story! DJ originally began bodybuilding as a way to beat the stress in her life.  She was a "computer geek” with poor nutrition habits.  She hired a personal trainer to “get healthy,” and the trainer invited her to begin training for a bodybuilding show.  DJ went on to become a champion bodybuilder in her 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s! Listen as DJ shares her experiences and information about the following topics: Does age affect metabolism?  Yes!  Our bodies change with age, and we need to listen to them carefully. The training goal for bodybuilders is focused one---to get lean.  The necessary nutrition is not healthy for the long-term because it’s so fat-restrictive, and our bodies need a certain amount of fat for proper function. Mindset is extremely important!  Not cheating and not compromising makes you a champion before you even compete! DJ had a regimented meal/snack schedule while training for competition.  Most people never get to experience the level of commitment, focus, and empowerment that are necessary for bodybuilding success. DJ has specific advice about “carb cycling” and “carb depletion” for bodybuilders. Beginner bodybuilders should begin training 16-24 weeks out from competition, depending on their percentage of body fat. DJ explains “refeeding,” which refer to the “splurge” meals during a very restrictive diet.  For her, a splurge means extra cardio workouts. DJ discusses eating before bedtime. She gives advice about whether or not you should eat, what should you eat, and why? DJ also talks about supplements, and which ones you should take while in training.  She shares the best way to lose fat and build muscle.  DJ has tons of valuable information to share for aspiring bodybuilders, and for anyone who wants to get healthier.  I hope you’ll join us to learn more! Welcome!  My guest today is Beverly Meyer, who has been an alternative health patient since the 1970’s.  She has tried many different modalities to treat anxiety, adrenal disorders, digestive issues, and numerous autoimmune disorders.  Beverly has dedicated her life to studying and finding answers and now helps many clients find their way to a better diet and better health.  She has fascinating information to share! Much of what Beverly teaches her clients stems from the research and findings of Dr. Weston Price, a dentist who practiced in the early 20th century.  He made predictions about how food trends would affect future generations, even down to bone structure!  Beverly discusses the following: All over the world, when people resorted to eating foods that weren’t native and natural, it has resulted in profound changes.   Humans weren’t meant to eat grains, which are the seeds of grasses meant for grazing animals. From her experience, EVERYONE has some sort of gluten allergy, but some are much more severe than others. Many bone structure changes over generations can be attributed to diets lacking in vitamins, especially vitamin D and K. The link between vitamins D and K and calcium absorption can be clearly seen in human facial bone structure! There are ways to ensure proper amounts of necessary vitamins and minerals.  Listen to Beverly’s tips for further information! It’s important to GET the proper nutrients, but also to live a lifestyle that utilizes them for maximum absorption. Vegetables should be steamed/cooked for maximum nutrition, as opposed to eating them mainly raw. Chronic illnesses disappear when drastic diet changes take place. Don’t miss what Beverly teaches about the connection between vitamin K, TMJ, and brain stem issues!  She also shares her TOP TIPS about how to change your diet for optimum health!  Listen to our conversation to learn more! How to use apps and searches to locate GF restaurants. How to shop at the grocery store to utilize whole foods. How to approach specialty GF foods and test for tolerance. http://www.DrAnh.com/survey  Today’s guest is Martha Blessing, who is the founder of Niagara Ayurvedic Wellness and Healing Center, in Buffalo, NY.  Martha began her career as a nurse in traditional Western medicine, but then turned to a more holistic approach.  She became a 3rd generation metaphysical and spiritual leader and healer and has written the book titled 8 Steps to Naturally Heal Chronic Pain.  Martha holds certifications as a Healing Touch practitioner/instructor, a clinical ayurvedic practitioner, a nutritional specialist, and a Kripalu Holistic Health practitioner.  You can see that she has a wealth of information to share, so join us to learn more! Martha faced many health challenges, including chronic pain, multiple surgeries, and confinement in a wheelchair.  Her diagnosis was “fibromyalgia,” which she views as a “garbage can diagnosis.”  When a patient experiences chronic, unexplainable pain, traditional doctors will diagnose it as fibromyalgia, and then prescribe medications to manage the symptoms.  An ayurvedic practitioner would find and treat the root cause of whatever imbalance in the body is causing the symptoms. What is Ayurvedic medicine, and what does Martha have to tell us about it? Ayurvedic medicine is the oldest form of medicine and healing known to man.  It dates back thousands of years, yet is still effective today. Ayurvedic practitioners treat the CAUSE of the illness, while looking at the entire realm of physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional aspects of the patient. Ayurvedic healing is based on three body types and the nutrition needed for balance in each one. Ayurvedic medicine focuses on seasonal foods and living in harmony with nature. Ayurvedic medicine includes yoga, meditation, and other ways to harness and manage the body’s energy. Ayurvedic medicine can REVERSE illness.  Martha is living proof of this! Ayurvedic medicine advocates detox to soften, loosen, and flush toxins from the body. Are you intrigued?  Do you want to know more?  Martha has much to teach us about her approach to health and wellness.  Listen to our conversation to learn about these topics and more! http://www.DrAnh.com/survey    Now it’s your turn! http://www.DrAnh.com/survey Today’s guest is Lacy Arnold, who is the founder and CEO of LeanMoms.com.  She is a devoted mother to three daughters, who are the inspiration for her company.  She holds a BS degree in Health and Wellness and offers a unique approach to women’s fitness.  Lacy’s passion is to help mothers achieve their ideal body, have a holistic lifestyle, and “get their sexy back!” Like many mothers, Lacy struggled in trying to get fit again after having her three daughters.  She decided to develop a realistic program that WORKS and use it to help other women. Lacy knew her program had to fit into a busy mom’s lifestyle, so she based it on three main principles:  strength training, high-intensity interval training (HIT), and right nutrition.  Join us to hear details about each of these aspects of the Lean Moms program. Lacy shares with us some of the keys to her program: Diet is 80% of the work!  Use Lacy’s 90/10 rule to help you stick to the plan. The main reason diets don’t work is that people want a QUICK FIX instead of a LONG-TERM, SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE. The key is to take small steps forward.  Listen to learn the small steps you can take that lead to BIG success in weight loss! Lacy shares her Level 1 and Level 2 meal plans.  They focus on cutting down on fat, eating lean protein, eating every 2-3 hours, and gradually adding healthier carbs. There is no “calorie-counting” in Lacy’s program because calories have nothing to do with overall good nutrition. Your “mindset” may be the most important aspect of any weight loss success.  Lacy shares how she partners with a company providing meditations to assist in the mental component of weight loss.  Learn how you can try it out for free! Lacy’s program has different levels and different costs.  The premium program costs about $.50/day and includes meal plans, recipes, meditations, online coaching, group calls, discounts for some services, and discounts for live events.  Listen to learn more! There are three things you can do to begin weight loss TODAY!  Increase your workout intensity, cut out sugar, and increase your intake of lean protein. By following Lacy’s advice, you can see results within ONE WEEK!  Best of all, you will FEEL BETTER and have MORE MENTAL CLARITY! http://www.DrAnh.com/survey  Now it’s your turn!
