In this episode:A widely read and much discussed media article out of Germany quoted researchers who surveyed athletes at the 2024 Challenge Roth on the use of performance enhancing drugs among age group triathletes. The results were somewhat disheartening. Around 10% admitted to using agents that would enhance performance and almost none had any qualms about it. What are these agents? What are the risks of using them? Should we care? The entire episode will be dedicated to try to answer these questions with the help of guests Jim Vance and Matt sharpe.

My guest today is Jim Vance  There are few individuals in the world with the teaching background, elite athlete experience, and coaching experience with elites, amateurs and juniors, as well as knowledge of training and a passion and understanding of tech. Jim has been the coach to US pro triathlete Ben Kanute for 8 years. He has also written 2 triathlon books (details of which you can find in the show notes) and is a consultant to several tech companies in the Multisport space including 80/20 Endurance and Velocity, a software programme for cycle coaching.   Jim and I have a great chat about the rapid advancements in technology and their impact on triathlon coaching. We get into the weeds on the physical toll of triathlon racing for pro athletes, given the ever increasing intensity of the races especially when racing in extreme heat.  Finally, and I think most importantly for you, the listener, we discussed the significance of personal harmony and relationships in achieving optimal athletic performance, and the crucial role of mental and physical preparation in triathlon.    Topics include: 18:14 Athletes need to learn to trust themselves - "I care more about athlete mindset on the start line than I do about training." 28:25 On harmony in your relationships - "We've got to really enhance our world. That brings more stability to it, that reduces stress." 56:41 On how to get the best recovery and stress levels - "So what affects that recovery cycle? Home life, stress outside of it, nutrition, sleep, all those things probably come back again to relationships in your daily life." 1:17:35 On the power of showing vulnerability - "David Warden kept getting all these questions. And he kept saying, 'Well, I don't know the answer', and  afterwards it became this crazy thing, where all these coaches just came up to him."     To find out more about Jim please check out his Instagram page @coachjimvance The most popular blog post he ever wrote: https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/10-things-endurance-athletes-need-to-stop-doing/ Other cool stuff: 80/20 Endurance Coach Certification and community, with Matt Fitzgerald Book recommendation for coaches, is a book called, "Motivational Interviewing in Sports", it's a game changer!    Some of the coaches Jim mentioned have been podcast guests. Who is Jim Vance? Jim Vance is a compassionate and experienced guide who has worked with countless men and women worldwide, helping them transform their lives, health, and relationships. He specializes in working with purpose-driven men who are proactive, self-motivated, and dedicated to personal growth. These men are on a quest to align with their authentic masculine identity, allowing them to make a positive impact in the world through their purpose and live in harmonious relationships. Drawing from a wealth of experience and witnessing various levels of identity shifts, Jim possesses the skills to serve individuals at different stages of consciousness. He deeply understands how to overcome unconscious barriers that hinder the alignment of one's identity with their soul's highest self. Jim acknowledges that his own personal journey, with its ups and downs, has shaped him and granted him the wisdom, growth, and embodiment required to impact his clients profoundly. Embarking on a Journey of Growth: Jim's personal journey can be summed up by the saying, "The journey of 1000 lifetimes begins with one step." With each step he has taken, Jim has evolved from a man living in misalignment and inauthenticity to a conscious individual who awakens in every moment, consciously steering his life toward his vision on a daily basis. Jim's upbringing in a "normal" and loving family provided a solid foundation. He cherished family connections, engaged in adventures, and experienced personal growth. His father, a philosophical blue-collar worker, constantly sought the meaning in life and imparted valuable lessons to Jim and his brothers. Meanwhile, his goal-oriented mother instilled in him a drive for excellence, no matter the endeavor. Confronting the Unhealed Wounds: It was only when Jim reached rock bottom, eyeing a second divorce, facing professional uncertainty, and battling self-destructive patterns, that he realized the pivotal role his own inner transformation played in manifesting the love and success he yearned for. In a dark night of the soul, alone in a parking lot, Jim experienced a profound realization: the fulfillment he sought originated from within, not outside of himself. Thus began his journey of self-healing, learning to love himself unconditionally, processing emotions at a deep level, embodying a healthy masculine frame, and leading his life from a place of self-acceptance and sufficiency. Over several years, Jim dedicated himself to this transformative process. He cultivated a fully aligned version of himself, now living the life of his dreams and experiencing the relationships he had always desired. It was during this transformative journey that Jim discovered his calling to support men facing life's challenges or seeking to elevate themselves toward their desired lives. Guiding Men Towards Greatness: Today, Jim Vance serves men with clarity, consistency, and alignment. He trusts in the person he has become and continues to evolve into. His mission is to inspire men to transcend mediocrity and realign themselves with their inherent greatness. Jim provides a supportive space for men to turn to when their lives seem to be falling apart or when they seek to take the next step toward the life they aspire to. Through his guidance and mentorship, Jim empowers men to step into their true potential, embrace their authentic identity, and lead fulfilling lives in alignment with their purpose. He believes that every man has the capacity to rise above societal conditioning and tap into their inner strength, wisdom, and compassion. Jim's commitment lies in facilitating this transformational journey for men, leading them toward lives filled with purpose, authenticity, and deep fulfillment.      This here episode marks the last episode of a very tumultuous year. At Least we gave you the super upbeat story of the Dozier School For Boys for your Christmas listening. This week we are going out with a bang! You may think you know the story, you probably know the names, you didn't know that Moody's wife is directly related to both families, and lastly you probably want us to get to the point. So here it is…. This week we celebrate the new year by talking about none other than the Hatfields and the McCoys...and the new years day massacre.         The patriarchs of each family during the majority of the feud were William Anderson Hatfield and Randolph McCoy.  Hatfield was born September 9, 1839, in western Virginia (now Logan, West Virginia), the son of Ephraim and Nancy (Vance) Hatfield. His nickname "Devil Anse" has a variety of supposed origins: it was given to him by his mother; by Randolph McCoy; earned from his bravery during battle in the American Civil War; or as contrast to his good-tempered cousin, Anderson "Preacher Anse" Hatfield.A Southern sympathizer, Hatfield enlisted in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant of Cavalry in the Virginia State Line in 1862, a group made to protect the territory along the Kentucky-Virginia border where resident loyalties to the North and South were mixed. The Virginia State Line eventually disbanded in 1863 and Hatfield enlisted as a private in the newly formed 45th Battalion Virginia Infantry, before being appointed first lieutenant and later captain of Company B. His unit spent most of its time patrolling the border area against bushwhackers sympathetic to the Union as well as engaging in guerrilla warfare against Union soldiers. Devil Anse himself has been connected to battles and killings of several Union fighters, including trackers Ax and Fleming Hurley in 1863.Devil Anse and his uncle Jim Vance later formed a Confederate guerrilla fighting unit called the "Logan Wildcats." One of the group's victims was Union General Bill France; killed in revenge for losing one of their members to France's unit.[ In 1865, he was suspected of having been involved in the murder of his rival Asa Harmon McCoy, who had fought for the Union Army and was waylaid by The Wildcats on his return home. Hatfield had been home ill at the time of the killing, which was probably committed at the instigation of his uncle, Jim Vance. This may have sparked the beginning of the notorious feud between the two families that claimed many lives on both sides.Devil Anse was the patriarch leader during the Hatfield-McCoy feud. His family and Randolph McCoy's fought in one of the bloodiest and most well-known feuds in American history. He was instrumental during the execution of McCoy boys Tolbert, Pharmer and Bud, as well as being present during the Battle of Grapevine Creek before most of his sons and friends were arrested for the murder of the McCoys.Hatfield was baptized on September 23, 1911 in Island Creek by William Dyke "Uncle Dyke" Garrett and converted to Christianity (he had maintained a largely agnostic or anti-institutional view of religion prior to this conversion). He went on to found a Church of Christ congregation in West Virginia. He was an uncle of the eventual Governor of West Virginia, and United States Senator, Henry D. Hatfield.         Randolph "Randall"(or sometimes Ol’ Ran’ll) McCoy grew up in the Tug River Valley, which marked the boundary between Kentucky and West Virginia. He was born on the Kentucky side of the valley, one of 13 children. There he learned to hunt and farm, two main ways people living in this part of Appalachia supported themselves. McCoy grew up in poverty. His father, Daniel, had little interest in work, so his mother, Margaret, had to struggle to care for, feed and clothe the family. In 1849, McCoy married his first cousin, Sarah "Sally" McCoy. Sally inherited land from her father a few years after they married. They settled on this 300-acre spread in Pike County, Kentucky, where they had 16 children together.  During the Civil War, McCoy served as a soldier for the Confederacy. He may have even been a part of the same local militia as his later nemesis, William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield.  The Family trees of these men are huge. There are many descendants around to this day. This also made keeping track of some of the issues tricky. Lots of people involved. First cousin marriage. Romeo and juliet type relationships between the families...crazy shit.          The Hatfield–McCoy feud, also described by journalists as the Hatfield–McCoy war, involved two rural American families of the West Virginia–Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River in the years 1863–1891. The McCoy family lived mostly on the Kentucky side of the Tug Fork; the Hatfields lived mostly on the West Virginia side. The majority of the Hatfields, although living in Mingo County (then part of Logan County) fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War; most McCoys also fought for the Confederates, with the exception of Asa Harmon McCoy, who fought for the Union.    The Hatfields were more affluent than the McCoys and were well-connected politically. Anse's timbering operation was a source of wealth for his family, while the McCoys were more of a lower-middle-class family. Ole Ran'l owned a 300-acre farm. Both families had also been involved in the manufacturing and selling of illegal moonshine, a popular commodity at the time. The first event in the decades-long feud was the 1865 murder of Randolph’s brother, Asa Harmon McCoy, by the Logan Wildcats, a local militia group that counted Devil Anse and other Hatfields among its members. Many people—even members of his own family—regarded Asa Harmon, who had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, as a traitor. At the time of his capture, he was recovering from a gunshot wound to the chest. During the early months of the Civil War, Asa joined a company of the Pike County Home Guards, under the command of Uriah Runyon, and it is thought he sustained the wound while serving in this unit. Asa's Company E was mustered out on December 24, 1864, in Ashland. He was killed near his home on January 7, 1865, just thirteen days after leaving the Union Army. A group of Confederate guerillas took credit for the killing and his wife's pension application states that he was "killed by Rebels". There are no existing records pertaining to his death and no warrants were issued in connection with the murder. McCoy family tradition points to James "Jim" Vance, an uncle of Anse and a member of a West Virginia Militia group, as the culprit.         Relations between the two families continued to sour over the next decade before flaring again over a seemingly small matter: a dispute over a single hog. In 1878 Randolph McCoy accused Floyd Hatfield, a cousin of Devil Anse, of stealing one of his pigs, a valuable commodity in the poor region. Floyd Hatfields’s trial took place in McCoy territory but was presided over by a cousin of Devil Anse. It hinged on the testimony of star witness Bill Staton, a McCoy relative married to a Hatfield. Staton testified in Floyd Hatfield’s favor, and the McCoys were infuriated when Floyd was cleared of the charges against him. Two years later, Staton was violently killed in a fracas with Sam and Paris McCoy, nephews of Randolph. Sam stood trial for the murder but was acquitted for self-defense reasons. Within months of Staton’s murder, a heated affair of a different sort was set ablaze. At a local election day gathering in 1880, Johnse Hatfield, the 18-year-old son of Devil Anse, encountered Roseanna McCoy, Randolph’s daughter. According to accounts, Johnse and Roseanna hit it off, disappearing together for hours. Supposedly fearing retaliation from her family for mingling with the Hatfields, Roseanna stayed at the Hatfield residence for a period of time, drawing the ire of the McCoys. Although they certainly shared a romance, it rapidly became clear that Johnse was not about to settle down with Roseanna. Several months later he abandoned the pregnant Roseanna and quickly moved on. In May 1881 he married Nancy McCoy, Roseanna’s cousin. According to the romanticized legend, Roseanna was heartbroken by these events and never recovered emotionally. The real turning point in the feud, according to most historical accounts, occurred on another local election day in August 1882. Three of Randolph McCoy’s sons ended up in a violent dispute with two brothers of Devil Anse. The fight soon snowballed into chaos as one of the McCoy brothers stabbed Ellison Hatfield multiple times and then shot him in the back. Authorities soon apprehended the McCoys, but the Hatfields interceded, spiriting the men to Hatfield territory. After receiving word that Ellison had died, they bound the McCoys to some pawpaw bushes. Within minutes, they fired more than 50 shots, killing all three brothers. Though the Hatfields might have felt their revenge was warranted, the law felt otherwise, quickly returning indictments against 20 men, including Devil Anse and his sons. Despite the charges, the Hatfields eluded arrest, leaving the McCoys boiling with anger about the murders and outraged that the Hatfields walked free. Their cause was taken up by Perry Cline, an attorney who was married to Martha McCoy, the widow of Randolph’s brother Asa Harmon. Years earlier Cline had lost a lawsuit against Devil Anse over the deed for thousands of acres of land, and many historians believe this left him looking for his own form of revenge. Using his political connections, Cline had the charges against the Hatfields reinstated. He announced rewards for the arrest of the Hatfields, including Devil Anse.         The media started to report on the feud in 1887. In their accounts, the Hatfields were often portrayed as violent backwoods hillbillies who roamed the mountains stirring up violence. The sensationalist coverage planted the seed for the rivalry to become cemented in the American imagination. What had been a local story was becoming a national legend. The Hatfields may or may not have been paying attention to these stories, but they were certainly paying attention to the bounty on their heads. In an effort to end the commotion once and for all, a group of the Hatfields and their supporters hatched a plan to attack Randolph McCoy and his family. This attack would become known as the New Year's Day Massacre.       Ever on the offensive, the Hatfields staged a sneak attack on the McCoy homestad. On New Year's Day 1888, they set fire to the McCoy home in what was eventually dubbed the New Year's Night Massacre. According to some accounts, the fire was set while the family was still in the house, asleep, as a means of forcing Randolph McCoy to come outside where a Hatfield ambush awaited him. As the flames grew, the Hatfields opened fire on the house.  McCoy did come out, but managed to escape into the woods along with some children, who suffered frostbite. Other members of the McCoy clan weren't so lucky. Two of his children were killed during the blaze, and his wife was beaten so badly she was permanently disabled. With his house burning, Randolph and his remaining family members were able to escape to the woods; his children, unprepared for the elements, suffered frostbite. The remaining McCoys moved to Pikeville to escape the West Virginia raiding parties.  During the 1888 New Year's Night Massacre, the Hatfields set fire to the McCoy homestead in hopes of flushing the family out in the open. During the mayhem, Randolph McCoy's wife, Sarah, was so badly beaten her skull was crushed. His son Calvin and daughter Alifair were killed in the crossfire Sarah McCoy had never participated in the violence of the feud, so beating her almost to death served no purpose other than sending a message. And send a message it did – to the local authorities. Sarah McCoy's gruesome beating, and the murder of her children, brought about the murder trial that judicially ended the feud between the warring families.  This incident led to the last great skirmish of the feud as tensions were at an all time high! After the murders and the burning of the house there was an outcry for the Hatfields to be brought to justice. This led to the battle of grapevine creek. On January 19 Devil Anse and a large party of his supporters faced off with Frank Phillips and his men in a large gun battle which entered local lore and the legend of the feud as the Battle of Grapevine Creek. Despite involving a large number of men, and despite being the single biggest engagement of the entire feud only two were killed in the battle, though a deputy who supported the Hatfields was executed by Phillips after the battle. Following the engagement Phillips withdrew to Kentucky, having succeeded in rounding up nine members of the Hatfield clan. Once there he learned that another Governor, E. Willis Wilson of West Virginia, had entered the fray, and at least to all appearances on the side of the Hatfields. Wilson demanded that the illegally taken prisoners be returned to West Virginia.Wilson expressed outrage to both governor Buckner and to the federal government, sued the government of Kentucky for the illegal arrest of the nine prisoners being held there, and demanded reparations for the raids into his state. He also ordered the West Virginia Guard to mobilize and move units to the border with Kentucky to prevent further incursions into the state. In response, Buckner dispatched units of Kentucky’s guard to the border area as protection against retaliatory raids by either West Virginia troops or supporters of the Hatfields. Only two decades after the end of the Civil War the military assets of two states were facing each other over their shared border, as a result of the feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys.Among the nine men taken to Kentucky to stand trial for the murder of Alifair McCoy and others was Valentine Hatfield, known as Wall and a man with some connections in the government of West Virginia. Through his ministrations, Governor Wilson demanded the return of the prisoners by arguing that they had been denied due process and had been illegally extradited by Kentucky. Kentucky argued that the prisoners were in custody, under indictment, and that the state had no obligation to release them to West Virginia or any other entity, regardless of the circumstances of their arrest. In April the case was appealed by Governor Wilson to the Supreme Court of the United States. The Court issued no finding regarding the legality or illegality of the arrest, but agreed with Kentucky in their argument that no federal law existed which would prohibit the prisoners from being tried for the crimes committed in Kentucky, regardless of the nature of events which resulted with them being in custody. The finding was 7-2 in favor of Kentucky. With the nine men in custody pending trial the feud was effectively over, at least as pertains to violence against the other family. But several questions over the feud itself and the many participants arose in the aftermath of the arrests. Devil Anse was not among the prisoners, and neither West Virginia nor Kentucky authorities sought his arrest, despite his physical location being well known. Nor was Cap Hatfield in custody. One of the prisoners taken to Kentucky for trial was Valentine Hatfield, and at his trial he was convicted of involvement in the murders of the McCoy children and sentenced to life in prison. Wall Hatfield may not have been involved in the attack for which he was charged, in 2014 his great-grandson, an Episcopal priest, told the Bluefield (West Virginia) Daily Telegraph that family lore was that Wall surrendered voluntarily and that he hadn’t been guilty of the crime for which he had been charged. He also recounted a story of another relative visiting the Kentucky State Prison to review the records of his great-grandfather and learning of a different cause of death than that recorded by most historians.ADVERTISEMENTAccording to most accounts of the feud, once he was convicted Wall communicated with his brothers, asking for their assistance in getting him out of jail, but they refused over fears of being arrested. Wall died in prison under circumstances which remain officially unknown. According to his great-grandson, an official of the Kentucky prison system reviewed the records at the request of a relative of the Hatfields, and reported to her that he was placed in a cellblock alongside several convicted members of the McCoy clan, who killed Wall Hatfield in prison. The cause of death and the location of his grave were never released officially to the Hatfield family, who still question the nature of his role in the feud.     According to the accounts of several historians regarding the feud, Kentucky Special Officer Frank Phillips captured a deputy named Bill Dempsey who had been supporting the Hatfields, and executed him on the spot, an act of outright murder, though he was not held accountable for the crime. Other accounts have Phillips similarly executing Uncle Jim Vance rather than taking him into custody. Phillips referred to himself as “Bad Frank”, and claimed to have ridden at one time with the James-Younger Gang. Whether or not true, he did name one of his sons Jesse James Phillips, and he was indicted at various times in several jurisdictions. MORE ON THE FUEDGoing back to Perry Cline, Whether Perry Cline instigated the feud, using Randolph McCoy and his family as a red flag to enrage Devil Anse, has been debated by many over the years. The story of Anse using the courts to deprive Cline of a significant section of valuable land has been cited as the motive for Cline to try to damage the Hatfield clan. Some writers and historians have laid the blame for the feud at the feet of Perry Cline, using his many instances of arousing the anger of the McCoy’s against the Hatfields as evidence that he manipulated the feud, and inflamed it during its several periods of near-dormancy. But other aspects of Cline’s character and his achievements in Pike County call this judgment into question in many ways. There is little doubt that the McCoy family and their supporters suffered more deaths and the destruction of property over the course of the feud, and Randolph McCoy’s frustrations were elevated by his failures to obtain justice in the courts. Cline may have just been using his influence and political connections to help the McCoy family. Cline was well respected in Pike County and its environs; he started the first school for black children in the county and was elected to the state legislature, where he exhibited significant political skills. The theory that Cline incited the feud to get back at Devil Anse also falls flat when it is considered that Anse’s business remained intact and profitable in the feud’s aftermath, and if anything his influence in Logan County was enhanced. One of the motivating factors for the Hatfield attack on Randolph McCoy’s home was the bounty placed on the heads of several members of the clan, including a $500 bounty on Devil Anse, the recognized leader of the Hatfield’s and their supporters. Anse has gone down in history as the undisputed leader of the West Virginia Hatfield clan, despite the fact that he was not arrested and was never tried for any of the multitude of violent crimes he supposedly directed. While some have ascribed his eluding prosecution to his political connections in West Virginia, it has been noted that his brother Wall held similar connections, which did not preclude him from being tried, convicted, and imprisoned in Kentucky, where he died. Anse was never, except when attempting to outmaneuver Frank Phillips and his posse of vigilantes, on the run; his whereabouts were well-known to both members of the Hatfield clan and the McCoy faction attempting to bring him to justice. Court records also demonstrate that Anse was prone to using the courts, both in Logan County and in Pike County, to resolve differences, as indicated by the incident with the stolen hog. Nor was he present during the attack on the McCoy home. He was part of the murder of the three McCoy brothers following the murder of his own brother, an incident which much of the Tug Valley found to be justified. If he was in fact the leader of the Hatfield clan, as most accounts claim, he nonetheless escaped legal retribution, and attempts to exact justice upon him ended with the trial of the Hatfield’s in Kentucky. Cap Hatfield was the second son of Devil Anse, a man known to have a violent streak and a quarrelsome nature throughout the Tug River region. Cap was the type of man who preferred fighting to discussion and believed that vengeance was a duty of the offended. Cap was one of many of the feud’s participants of which there are conflicting accounts, some say he was arrested by Frank Phillips on the same day that the latter killed Uncle Jim Vance, others recount that he escaped Phillips on that day. At one point he was in the Logan County (later Mingo County) Jail, from which he reportedly escaped and eluded justice, probably with the help of his father. Cap was never brought to justice.ADVERTISEMENTDuring the trial which led to the sentencing of Ellison Mounts to death, eyewitness testimony from Randolph McCoy was that it was Cap Hatfield who had killed Alifair McCoy, testimony which conflicted with the confession offered by Mounts. As Cap frequently sided with his mentor, Jim Vance, who consistently recommended violent solutions to perceived slights, it seems likely that he was present during the attack, probably leading it along with his uncle. Cap escaped the feud and the pursuit of the vigilantes and vanished. In 1930, he died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the last survivors of the feud. His death was described in the New York Times as being the result of a brain ailment.James Vance was well-known in both Logan and Pike Counties, referred to as Crazy Jim Vance by the McCoy family and as Uncle Jim Vance to the Hatfield clan. The McCoys liked to point out that his father, Abner Vance, had been hanged and had never been married to Jim’s mother. A guerrilla fighter in Logan and Pike Counties during the Civil War, Vance was widely believed to have been the killer of Asa Harmon McCoy in 1865. Vance was accused by the McCoy’s of being the leader of the assault on the McCoy home during the New Year’s attack, and there was testimony that it was he who had severely beaten Sarah McCoy with a rifle butt as she attempted to reach her wounded daughter.Vance has been portrayed down the years as a psychopathic killer, one of the leading proponents of the violence which marked the feud. Following his death and the disappearance of Cap Hatfield, the violence of the feud subsided, despite Devil Anse, the presumed leader of the Hatfield clan, remaining at large. Some historians believe that Cap Hatfield witnessed the execution of the wounded Jim Vance at the hands of Frank Phillips, which led to Cap’s decision to flee the region. Despite his criminal history, Vance at one point served as a constable, though many of the Hatfield’s did so in Logan County, despite being considered outlaws in Pike County, so Vance’s service with the law cannot be a consideration when evaluating his true character.    Throughout the twentieth century, the Hatfield and McCoy feud grew in legend. It became sensationalized in newspapers and magazines, fictionalized in periodicals and film, satirized in vaudeville, and trivialized in cartoons and comics. Portions of the feud were presented as romantic drama, as in the film Roseanna McCoy, released in 1949, which approached the feud from the perspective of star-crossed lovers of the Romeo and Juliet type. Mark Twain was one of the first to use the feud as a basis for one of his tales, describing the feud between the Grangerfords and the Sheperdsons in his novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Even Betty Boop appeared in the cartoon with a feud as a backdrop. On June 14, 2003, in Pikeville, Kentucky, the McCoy cousins partnered with Reo Hatfield of Waynesboro, Virginia, to declare an official truce between the families. Reo Hatfield said that he wanted to show that if the two families could reach an accord, others could also. He had said that he wanted to send a broader message to the world that when national security is at risk, Americans put their differences aside and stand united: "We're not saying you don't have to fight because sometimes you do have to fight," he said. "But you don't have to fight forever." Signed by more than sixty descendants during the fourth Hatfield–McCoy Festival, the truce was touted as a proclamation of peace, saying "We ask by God's grace and love that we be forever remembered as those that bound together the hearts of two families to form a family of freedom in America." Governor Paul E. Patton of Kentucky and Governor Bob Wise of West Virginia signed proclamations declaring June 14 Hatfield and McCoy Reconciliation Day. Ron McCoy, one of the festival's founders, said it is unknown where the three signed proclamations will be exhibited and that "the Hatfields and McCoys symbolize violence and feuding and fighting, but by signing this, hopefully people will realize that's not the final chapter.the Hatfield and McCoy Reunion Festival and Marathon are held annually in June on a three-day weekend. The events take place in Pikeville, Kentucky, Matewan, West Virginia, and Williamson, West Virginia. The festival commemorates the famed feud and includes a marathon and half-marathon (the motto is "no feudin', just runnin'"), in addition to an ATV ride in all three towns. Welcome to the fifth episode of Gear Up, Triathlete’s brand-new monthly podcast that takes a look at the latest trends, the hot-button topics, and lifts the curtain on all of that crazy tri-related gear that you love, and sometimes love to hate. This week our guest is former pro triathlete and San Diego-based Coach, Jim Vance. Vance works with high-level athletes like 2016 Olympian Ben Kanute and has written two books, Triathlon Training 2.0 and Running With Power. Today we’ll take a look at smartwatches—specifically for running. We’ll dig into running with power to get a sense of why it differs from cycling with power and talk about how Coach Vance uses it to work with his athletes. We’ll also talk about a really novel way to set up your smartwatch screens and sport profiles that you might not have thought of before, and we’ll hear about Coach Vance’s number one favorite feature when it comes to smartwatches. Finally, we’ll get to hear about some of my favorite picks as we head into the winter gift giving season and we’ll talk about a brand new watch from longtime cycling computer maker, Wahoo.

At that time, he has just made the switch to his Coach Jim Vance. I highly recommend going back to have a listen to both of those podcasts; great information for life and sport. In this episode, we dive in with Ben to find out what's been going on with this US Olympian and 3x National Champion since we last spoke. BJ and I are excited to share our conversation today, thank you so much for tuning in. The Hatfield–McCoy feud, also described by journalists as the Hatfield–McCoy war, involved two rural families of the West Virginia–Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River in the years 1863–1891. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph "Ole Ran'l" McCoy. Those involved in the feud were descended from Joseph Hatfield and William McCoy (born c. 1750). The feud has entered the American folklore lexicon as a metonym for any bitterly feuding rival parties. William McCoy, the patriarch of the McCoys, was born in Ireland around 1750 and many of his ancestors hailed from Scotland.[1] The family, led by grandson Randolph McCoy, lived mostly on the Kentucky side of Tug Fork (a tributary of the Big Sandy River).[2] The Hatfields, led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, son of Ephraim and Nancy (Vance) Hatfield, lived mostly on the West Virginia side.[3] The majority of the Hatfields, although living in Mingo County (then part of Logan County), West Virginia, fought on the Confederate side in the American Civil War; most McCoys, living in Pike County, Kentucky, also fought for the Confederates;[4] with the exception of Asa Harmon McCoy, who fought for the Union. The first real violence in the feud was the death of Asa Harmon McCoy as he returned from the war, murdered by a group of Confederate Home Guards called the Logan Wildcats. Devil Anse Hatfield was a suspect at first, but was later confirmed to have been sick at home at the time of the murder. It was widely believed that his uncle, Jim Vance, a member of the Wildcats, committed the murder.[5]Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/anthologyofhorror)

Welcome to the 5th episode of the Stryd Power Podcast! This episode covers 12 reasons that a running power meter makes you a better runner.  The inspiration for this episode comes from Run with Power by Jim Vance.    "In the history of running technology, a stopwatch is probably equivalent to using a typewriter—pretty good at its job, but severely limited in scope. Running’s step up to heart rate monitors was a revelation, but in retrospect, it was like moving from the typewriter to what we would now regard as an old, heavy, slow desktop computer. Today’s GPS wrist units are like the first cellphones, much like a flip-phone. The portable power meter for running is the next step, equivalent to the laptop, tablet, and smartphone coming into existence all at once. And while you can still accomplish a lot with a desktop computer, you likely will be much more effective in many ways if you add the laptop, tablet, and smartphone to your arsenal. This is what the power meter brings to the world of training and racing for competitive running." Here are just some of the ways a power meter for running can positively affect your training and performance: Boost Your Training Specificity Improve Your Running Technique Your Power Numbers Don’t Lie Monitor Injuries Know Truly How Hard You’re Training Better Recovery Power Meters Offer Precision Tapering Warm-Up Without Wasting Energy Power-to-Weight Ratios Speed per Watt Pacing to Win Know When to Open the Throttle For all this information and more you can read Run with Power by Jim Vance

That way both athlete and coach could see that it was 1000% humidity and that's why the heart rate was so high, etc.   In the interview Jim had explained that you can enable the calendar view to display the weather for the day on the calendar where the athlete trains.  It actually uses the lat/long of the gps files that are being uploaded.  On the calendar it shows the day's high, low and humidity I confirmed with Jayne that she was asking for the temperature and humidity at the time of the workout.  We took that question to Benji Marshall of Today'sPlan and he wrote back: We show the temperature at the time of the activity in the bottom left when you open the activity. You can also add the avg, min and max temp in various areas of the platform that you can configure. This is the temperature that is recorded by the head unit at the time of the activity so is prone to being a little off as the head units can record some erroneous data in this regards but generally is quite good. See some screenshots below.  As for humidity I have put in a ticket to have this included as a field in the field select areas of the platform so it too can be added to the view by the user. Jim Vance Debrief: One of the Today'sPlan features that Jim Vance described are the RPE of the workout and Subjective Wellness ratings the athlete can provide on a daily basis.  As a coach we can look at all the power files, paces and heart rate levels in a workout and not have insight into how the athlete experienced their workout, their day, and what might be going on that contributed to the power, heart rate and pace.  At a glance, looking at the workout in the calendar I can see the RPE.   With one click, I can see the Session Rating recorded by the athlete, the duration rating by the athlete and the intensity.  This is a great way for a coach to know the athletes perception and perspective of the session objective, duration and intensity as it relates to the athlete's goals.  If there's a mis-communication about how the sessions are designed to help the athlete achieve their goals, this is a great way to make that mis-communication visible and get the conversation started if it hasn't happened already.   The other insights that can be collected are wellness attributes that can be customized by the coach in terms of what the athlete sees and responds to.  The athlete can complete include: Diet Mood Stress Muscle soreness Sleep quality Fatigue (waking) Fatigue (before) Fatigue (activity) Satisfaction Performance The coach can also select to make the wellness ratings on the day in the calendar view.  With that feature enabled to be visible, a small yellow star appears and by simply hovering over the star, the coach can see the athlete's perspective on all of those attributes on a daily basis. When I have my weekly Skype call with my athletes, I ask them about subjective wellness items including stress, fatigue, injury or niggles.  I ask how the workouts are going from their perspective, do they make sense given the goals, etc.  But just like Jim Vance pointed out, athletes tend to forget what they felt like 6 days prior.  Having it recorded daily gives the athlete and the coach data, recorded on the day, of the athlete's subjective sense of what they are experiencing. http://303triathlon.com/kona-must-dos-by-khem/ Video of the week: Family affair at Ironman Augusta 70.3 Double win In the News is sponsored by Rudy Project.  Rudy Project has the helmets, glasses and gear to help you ride safe and look great.  Use code MHE30 to get 30% off your full price items. We have a good old fashion coaching tips interview this week with Sansego coach Matt Smith.  Matt was on the deck at the Boulder camp during our pool sets this spring.  He gave tips from his observations on deck and also did some video analysis observations and recommendations.  I picked up a few tips from Matt that I incorporated into my training and believe those changes were part of what led to a 1.2 mile PR at Boulder 70.3 a few weeks ago.  We wanted to get him on the show and share his expertise with you and see if we can get you to your new swim PR. Today's show is supported by iKOR Labs.  iKOR is a clean, natural source of recovery enhancing CBD that protects your body from the stresses of training, improves recovery from intense efforts and helps you maintain a positive mental state. The most bio-available CBD product on the market, iKOR is a highly protective anti-oxidant, an effective anti-inflammatory and a powerful mood booster.  WADA and USADA legal.  Used by world class professional athletes.  Save 20% by using the code "endurance" at checkout. Side note that I have some corrections to some information I've shared about iKOR to share in the post interview discussion. Coach Matt Smith lives in Boulder with his wife Molly, who by the way are very nearly new parents.  Early congrats to them both.  As you'll hear, he and the Sansego team believe in helping athletes find their full potential.   Coaching Philosophy: Mission: To partner with goal oriented athletes to help them accomplish their goals by setting a realistic training plan that integrates with their life vs. dominating it. Philosophical Statements: Coaching is a co-active relationship between coach and the athlete, we know more together. Matt will work with the athlete to develop a race schedule and training plan that fits with their lifestyle and progresses with their ability level. Matt sees his role is to show an athlete they can do more than they think they can. I will provide support and motivation to get them to stretch their limits, yet set realistic goals and benchmarks in the process. Matt will strive to keep an athlete injury free. Plans are built with proper rest and recovery included. I listen to how athletes are feeling physically and mentally and adapt accordingly. Direct communication is key. Matt will always respond to athletes in an honest, consistent, timely manner. Multisport is a lifestyle. Matt models a healthy lifestyle and encourage athletes to think about training as a life long endeavor vs. a short term goal. The sport should be hard work, but fun at the same time.   Matt and Sansego Partnership with Max Testa Training in Park City Utah next spring;   Colorado Classic Quick recap of route and profile The 303 Project, the team and Director Nicholas Graeff; driver Albert and mechanic Carson Anatomy of the caravan 303Cycling Facebook Live (Austin Stephens, Ken Gart, Lookout, Red Rocks) Race and Team Communications - there are two radios in the car.  One is Race Radio, which is the Race Director communication to the Team Directors.  Race Radio is the first car behind the peloton and they communicate rider calls for water bottles, mechanicals and crashes.  The other radio is the Team Radio set to a different frequency.  All the riders and both cars have radios set to that frequency.  This is for the Team Director primarily to communicate to the riders.  If there's a split in the group, both cars talk to the riders in the group that they are covering.  The riders can also call to the cars.  Here's a quick 30 second sound bite.  The first thing you'll here is Race Radio talking about the upcoming Feed Zone.  The next you'll hear is some words of encouragement from Nicholas Graeff to a rider, and in another case to go to the medical car for assistance.  You'll also hear our car, Car 2 calling to Car 1. This episode continues our coverage of some of the most epic races on the planet.  This week we have repeat top 10 Norseman Xtreme Triathlon finisher Richard Rozok.  Many of you will know what makes Norseman an "extreme" triathlon.  For those who don't or have never heard of Norseman, you are about to hear a story of an incredibly challenging iron distance race.  Norseman is a one of seven Xtri World Tour Xtreme triathlons.  At the Sansego Camp this past May, Crowie asked all of the athletes to introduce themselves, their racing experience and race goals for the year.  Most of us were referring to 70.3 this and IM that - no big surprises.  There was one guy, with a great accent, who casually mentioned that he was planning to race Norseman.  There were a handful of us in the room that had audible reactions, including Crowie, Matt Smith and Franko Vatterott. Today's interview is iKOR Labs.  iKOR is a clean, natural source of recovery enhancing CBD that protects your body from the stresses of training, improves recovery from intense efforts and helps you maintain a positive mental state. The most bio-available CBD product on the market, iKOR is a highly protective anti-oxidant, an effective anti-inflammatory and a powerful mood booster.  WADA and USADA legal.  Used by world class professional athletes.  Save 20% of the regular price of $69.99 by using the code "endurance" at checkout. Thanks to last week's guest, Don Reichelt who put his stamp in Badwater 135 history, finishing 3rd overall. We had a great chat about his training, strategy and how the race unfolded.  Badwater 135 sounds brutal with temperatures as high as 127 degrees.  If you missed it, go back and check out Episode #138. Norseman - The start is 150km from Bergen and 322km from Oslo Airport in the Eidfjord. While the finish is 367km from Bergen and 230km from Oslo at the top of Mt. Gaustatoppen at 1850m. Total elevation gain during the 140.6 miles is 5235m (17175 ft). Richard Rozok is a working age-grouper in Norway who competes at the elite level.  Having trained with him at the Sansego Boulder camp this past May, I can attest first hand to Richard's strength and speed at all disciplines.  I'm pleased to present…Richard Rozok. It's a deeply flawed belief that more is always better when it comes to training. We've heard it all so many times. "I have to run the full distance to know that I can do it". "I need to swim 2.4 in the pool so I know I can finish the swim". "I need to bike over 112 miles to make sure I can make the cut offs". "I need to do more to get stronger". No, no, no and no. Any athlete who believes these types of statements and brings them into their physical training would be best served by increasing their mental training. What every single one of the statements screams to us is "I don't believe in myself". Belief is the number one element to hold close as we race towards our goals. Jim Vance is what I would consider a master of training his athletes to believe in themselves. He knows which buttons to push and when to push them. He garners their trust through his results-producing training recipe. He understands that each athlete has a metric that is a gateway to their success. His job is to identify that metric and utilize it to his athlete's greatest advantage by creating victories throughout their training and racing journey. Jim is the coach to Professional Triathlete and Olympian Ben Kanute. Ben came to Jim following the Rio Olympics a bit beat down and looking for a new direction. By identifying his metrics and cultivating his trust, Jim reduced Ben's physical training and in the process created an unstoppable champion. Ben is on the top right now and the biggest difference is that Ben fully believes in himself as a champion. He knows he can go faster and win more. Coach Vance has been coined as the data guy and certainly he relies on the data but only as a reference point. He knows that mental health is the most important piece of an athlete's success. 90% is the amount that he reminds us of during this conversation. If we do not believe, we will never reach our highest potential. To take this into a YogiTriathlete spin, belief comes from deepening our relationship with the present moment. It is only in the present moment that change can occur. It is only when we are fully awake to the moment that we are living that can we see the thoughts that are driving our lives. Present moment awareness creates a space between the thoughts and our focus. This space is where we can choose new thoughts. Ones that align us with our goals and our highest potential to believe in our abilities to reach those goals. Hands down this is one of my favorite podcasts yet. Data guy turned mindfulness guru, Coach Vance is a master at his art. He has assisted countless athletes to great successes and I believe that his ability to fine-tune the mental game is only going to get stronger. When we tap into the power of the mind and learn how to train it, we open up a vault of unlimited potential for learning and achievement. Thank you for tuning in, please let us know what you thought of this episode by leaving a review on Apple Podcast. We are grateful for your support.

Badwater 135 Ultra-marathon is billed as the "toughest foot race on the planet".  With air temperatures reaching a high of 127 degrees and pavement temperatures in the 150s, it's no wonder that only 68 of the 99 racers this year finished.  What was not well known until this year's race was Don Reichelt's name.  You, however, heard him back in March on the show talk about his selection for Badwater and his plans for training for this ultra tough event.  Guess what, this badass got a podium of 3rd place, surprising previous record holders, podium placers, organizers and teams.  Were we surprised - hell no! Welcome to episode 77 of the Final Surge podcast where we talk to coach Steve Palladino on Power meters for runners. Back in episode 61 we addressed power with Jim Vance, today we take another look at it and dive deeper into the numbers and success stories. If you want to get even more information make sure you check out Steve's power Facebook group which you can find in the show notes.    Can you tell us about your background and how you got involved in running Ran in middle/high school (4:27 mile) Ran in Jr College then U California David Post-collegiate ran 2:16 at Boston in 1979 and ran for Adidas Then became podiatrist  Started running again late 30's In 40's started competitive cycling and was an early adapter to power meters for bikes A lot of questions still on power for running, why are you such a fan of running with power? Power is an output, closest measure of what is going on metabolically to produce our movement Power will show similar effort on track, on roads or even on a dirt hilly trail Can take a workout easily off the track with power and will get same workout effects  You mentioned perceived exertion. Alex Hutchinson did a piece recently in Outside Magazine that I thought was very fair taking a look at some of the issues he has with power for running. I have been using a Stryd power meter myself recently and have become a fan, but he has some good points. So why do we need a power meter when we have RPE? Power calibrates RPE and RPE modulates power. There are days when your RPE are a little off and power will help you recalibrate RPE on those days.  They fine-tune each other If you look at Galen Rupp or Alan Webb or Kellyn Taylor these are professional runners who are having a lot of success in their sport and not needing power, so what does this really solve, what is missing? Coaches have had success and a lot is on the track so when on track pace works well Power you can take it off the track onto a trail or road and do similar workout Elites just have not identified it yet and it is starting to make some inroads Just like cycling started out as a fringe thing, now all elites use it With triathlons I can see coming off the bike your legs are tired and running with power may be able to inform how you are feeling. But for someone who is just running an open 10k on fresh legs is power that important? Triathletes will benefit from the data, but variable is what type of power can you produce after a bike ride Fresh 10k power can be very beneficial for pacing and to keep you where you need to be for a whole race Elites are racing athletes where age groupers are more racing for a time so different benefits We recently added your power Zones to our Final surge platform, Can you talk about how you use zones? Added more than Stryd has Looked at a lot of races so has been able to adjust and finer tune power zones Upper-end zones have more than other systems based on race ranges and information To get your zones you need FTP or your functional threshold power, how do you get that base number? There are several ways to estimate Critical Power Test - 3 minute and 9-minute test Recent 5k-10k race Comes out to about lactate threshold power  A key number is running that you like to focus on is running effectiveness, and I know this is something we are looking at adding to our system, what is running effectiveness? How effective you are at converting power to speed Important metric  Let’s give an example of how this can change. Let’s say you have a runner who’s running FTP is 350 at 8:00 pace and you train for a few weeks and now you get an FTP of 350 but at 7:45 pace, does that mean the running effectiveness has changed? Yes, getting more speed at same power Slow moving metric, but can get improvement What can I do to improve my running effectiveness? Somethings we know and some are still unknown Leg Spring Stiffness - by weight training/plyos/hills Form issues can be improved, horizontal power issues Improve running economy You mentioned running spring stiffness and vertical oscillation, and there are a lot of numbers that power looks at. So I finish a run and log in to look at my Stryd numbers? What should I be really tracking and looking at? Is it my Run Stress Score, or running effectiveness or leg stiffness or what do I need to focus on? Don't want paralysis by analysis  Look at power and power to weight Running effectiveness Leg Spring Stiffness Horizontal Power Those are the main ones, others are secondary and help break down the above primary numbers If someone is looking at this and wants to try it, most plans they are following on the internet are not power plans. How can they look at a workout and modify it for power? If you know your power zones and reference them can translate Turn distances into durations Easier to take those off track and onto other surfaces You mentioned coaching high school athletes and that you have been using power with your high school kids, can you talk about how that has been going with them? Not every kid, but one from each group of similar ability Training load can be monitored easier to make sure stays where it needs to be   You have trained some athletes to amazing big PR stories using power. Can you tell us about one or two of those as a demonstration of how power really helped? How can things like snow effect power? Doreen Gentzler on breaking in Jim Vance and George Michael during one of her first days on the job ~ "I think of one of the first broadcasts I did with those guys, brand new, they're all 15 years older than me, they've all been working together for many years. They've got all these inside jokes and everything. I can remember George and Vance would kind of get into it. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah about alimony payments and this and that. . . One of the first broadcasts, they start going off about something, probably sports related or something like that. I think I interrupted them and said 'Well, let's ...' Something to change the subject. I didn't think anything of it, I just did it. . . that's how I roll. I remember after that broadcast, the two of them looking at each other and looking at me and saying, 'This is going to be okay. This is going to work.' Doreen Gentzler - News4 and WRC-TV News Anchor and Award Winning Journalist and Andy Ockershausen in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town. I can't believe that I'm so fortunate enough to have this very special guest, Doreen Gentzler. She's an award winning broadcast journalist, she's absolutely an icon, but the best part of all is she's a friend, and I am so delighted, Doreen Gentzler, to have you on Our Town. Washington, D.C. | Charleston, SC | Athens, GA Doreen Gentzler: Well, it's my pleasure, and you're the one who's an icon and a legend, Andy. You have outlasted a whole lot of people in this town. Andy Ockershausen: Well, that's true, been a long time. Janice keeps me going, of course. We created this podcast, I didn't even know what it was. I never heard of it until two years ago. It's radio without a transmitter. This is a radio show, and thank you for being here Doreen. A Washingtonian, you were born in Our Town and lived here until you were 11 years old, and then left Our Town. Doreen Gentzler: Right, true, true. Andy Ockershausen: The family took off and took you with them. Doreen Gentzler: To Charleston, South Carolina. Boy, how things have changed. I remember so many things from when I was a kid growing up here that have, that are just- Andy Ockershausen: Oh my ... Doreen Gentzler: Completely different. You know what I'm talking about. Andy Ockershausen: You live through it, just talking to that Councilman, Charles, he was telling me what's happened in his ward. I got to go over and visit. It's nothing I could ever relate to. That's the great part about Our Town, it's constantly changing. Doreen Gentzler: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Andy Ockershausen: Boy, think of your year. The first time we met was at a wedding, and it wasn't yours. It was Allan Horlick's daughter. Doreen Gentzler: Oh, oh, it was a Bat Mitzvah I think. Andy Ockershausen: Something like that. Doreen Gentzler: Yes, yes. Andy Ockershausen: We sat at the same table and you had not been there very long. This must have been in '90 or '91. Doreen Gentzler: Right. Andy Ockershausen: I met your husband, I met ... Since then I consider you a friend. It took us a long time over the years, Doreen, to arrive at this, but you're so special to us. Doreen Gentzler: Well, thank you. University of Georgia Alumni Andy Ockershausen: To Our Town. You have made Our Town so good for us and the years you spent getting, honing your skills are important. That's what I like reading about you. You went to University of Georgia. I don't why you lived in South Carolina but there's a young woman ... We were down there for graduation, our niece graduated from down there, last year in '15, and the ... Doreen Gentzler: From Georgia? Andy Ockershausen: From Georgia, University of Georgia. The woman that did the talk- Janice Iacona Ockershausen: Amy on Channel 7. Amy on ABC. Doreen Gentzler: Oh, Robach. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: Yes. Doreen Gentzler: Amy Robach, yeah. In episode 61 of the Final Surge podcast, we welcome coach Jim Vance who literally wrote the book on power meters of runners with his book Run With Power. Power meters have been around for a while with cyclists, but for runners, they are fairly new. Final Surge recently started importing Stryd’s power numbers from Strava and Garmin. We talk to Jim about what some of those numbers mean and how he used power training to coach Ben Kanute to his recent runner-up at the 70.3 Worlds. I just recently started playing with a Stryd power meter so I learned a lot as I did this podcast. This is a topic we will continue to cover as we become more familiar with it and as the technology continues to advance. If you are listening to this podcast when it first comes out you head over to FinalSurge.com or to our @FinalSurge Twitter account and register for a chance to win a free Stryd running power meter. Listen to the podcast on iTunes or listen to it on Stitcher if you have an Android device. Stream it right here:   You coach some great Triathlon athletes including Olympian Ben Kanute, how did you first get started in endurance athletics and how did that lead to coaching today? Let’s start here, most endurance athletes have heard about power meters for the bike, but what is the power meter for running? How can a power meter help a runner? If someone gets a new power meter, what is the first thing a runner should do? What is your power number that you get, what does it mean? Once I have a dataset of 4-6 weeks of runs, what numbers should I be looking at and trying to change and improve? How will power numbers differ for different workouts like a long run vs a tempo run? As a coach, I am trying to understand this better. If we are doing a 7x1k workout at tempo, how do I use a power number? Can you talk about these zones and how you use them to write workouts? What is the biggest difference in power numbers you are going to see in newer runners vs more experienced runners? What would be a significant change in these numbers, what are you looking for in numbers? Facebook question: So, page 205 (Power book by Vance) says the analysis should explore the following key metrics in the post-race analysis: NP, IF, VI, TSS, EI, CTL the day before race day, TSB on race day, w/kg during the race, power zone distributions, point in the race where power and/or pace dropped off. This appears to be the story that emerges which should guide your next training cycle. Is there a simplified way to understand that story? I realize I should look at the numbers and decide a weak area...but that's a lot of numbers! Can you guide our eye for making decisions about the next step in training? You recently released some plans on Final Surge for running with power, can you tell us what is in those plans? You mentioned Ben Kanute ran a 340 for power in a 70.3 race, when we are looking at the power number in Final Surge should we be aiming for a certain number. We went to his memorial service at the National Cathedral with thousands of others who loved Jim. There will never be another Jim Vance." Janice and Andy Ockershausen,, in studio Our Town DC Podcast Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, and this is Our Town. It's hard to believe that Season 2 is complete. We've had some great guests over the last 20 weeks. Our Town started with a bang at a launch party at Tony and Joe's on May 23rd. Our guests included Jim Vance. We were in the unique position of interviewing Jim before the news broke of his terminal cancer. We shared a glorious hour with Jim Vance, with lots of laughs and a new awareness of his impact on Our Town. We went to his memorial service at the National Cathedral with thousands of others who loved Jim. There will never be another Jim Vance. During Season 2, we spoke to so many friends, including members of Congress, sports heroes, university presidents, newspaper and magazine publishers, writers, famous attorneys, some unfamous attorneys also, restaurateurs, and community organizers. If you name it, we didn't miss many. We stayed live and lively as much as we could. Some of the names included Chris Plante from WMAL, Tommy McFly from other stations, Connie Morella, a former Congresswoman and a very dear friend of WMAL over the year, Kathleen Matthews, an ex-WMAL and WMAL-TV employee who worked in our newsroom as the erstwhile Kathy Cunningham. How about that? Joe diGenova, United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Pat Collins, a great reporter who's still very active with Channel 4, a very, very dear friend. Mark Ein, the man that put tennis into a proper perspective who had the only championship team in the last like 30 years. His team won the tennis championship five or six years in a row. Mark is a great citizen and a great part of our community. The tennis team has been great. James Brown, old JB, a local guy, Dematha High School. James Brown is an icon in our business and a great friend. Thank you for having him in Our Town regularly. Rick "Doc" Walker, Janice referred to him ... I always thought his middle name was Doc. She has called him Rick "Doc" Walker for years, but he's got that nickname, "Doctor." But Rick is a very, very important part of our lives because of what he's meant to WMAL over the years. Now he's over on the broadcast team for the great Washington Redskins team. Then we've had the pleasure of having the number one announcer, a news guy for Fox, Ed Henry, who was so huge during the election with his reporting. Ed has become a great friend of WMAL. Then last but not least of the big names, I think a big name, the owner of the Washington Post who sold it. Donald Graham sold the Post to Bezos, and Donald started his second life as an entrepreneur and businessman. He's done so well, and he loves Our Town. He thought that by doing it, of selling to Bezos, it would put a new life into the Post. And I'm sure it did. They're doing so well. We've already begun recording for Season 3, and we've got some interesting guests lined up, including Tony Zeiss, president of the new Museum of the Bible, a multi-media, two block building of over 420,000 square feet of exhibit space, costing over $500 million. It's brand new to Our Town. It's opening in mid-November. We also have the opening of the Wharf. The Wharf opened here in September. In a $2 billion effort to redo the Washington downtown, and the Washington Wharf is going to be in our subject. And we're going to talk about it. We'll hear about that in many ways, and one of them is going to be traffic. Traffic is going to be horrendous, but it is anyway,

Jim Vance on Washington football back in the day - "I used to walk to the games, RFK. I can't tell you how many times I've walked home and it's a one way street going west. People would stop their cars at 11th and C and get out. And the people would come out of their houses. . . everybody was having a party in the streets of DC because we beat Dallas. We beat the Cardinals." Jim Vance - Legendary News Anchor News4 Washington DC A Ockershausen: Welcome back to Our Town. This is Part Two with Jim Vance. This is Andy Ockershausen. Jim, the thing that we always see in my mind, was Channel Four was Vance, the sports shows, what you would do with George ... It was just incredible. Your chemistry with Michael was unbelievable. And he was not an easy person to get along ... Another Philadelphia guy. George Michael Jim Vance: George could be a major pain in the butt. A Ockershausen: That's right. Perfectionist. Jim Vance: But, part of what people sometimes found so grating about George was what I figured out right away. George is an unrepentant perfectionist. As it regards his element of concern, his sports broadcast, his show, he demanded nothing but perfection. There's so many things I admired about George not the least of them, one of the people I met last Saturday at the Golden Circle Award thing was one of George interns from back 25 years ago who remembered so well how he used to have to wear a tie every day. I admire George for making his interns come to work every day wearing a tie. You were talking earlier about .. A Ockershausen: Felix. Jim Vance: about Felix respecting his audience. It's also a matter of respecting the craft. I appreciate ... And nobody respected the craft more than George. Beyond that I never knew a harder working man in my life, Andy, than George Michael. A Ockershausen: He seemed to be possessed when he was around his own show. Then he did it with the special show. Jim Vance: With the .. A Ockershausen: He made Sports World. Janice Ockershausen: Sports Center? A Ockershausen: Sports Machine. Jim Vance: Sports Machine. Thank you so very much. Before George taught ESPN how to do it. A Ockershausen: Absolutely he did. Jim Vance: I'll never forget the day I was going to the station and these construction crews in there like, "what the hell." They had this big crane. The very first satellite was being put up in our parking lot and some people were angry, because it took away at least five parking spaces which were at a premium. A Ockershausen: Absolutely. Jim Vance: Then I think now I can't even count the number we have in there now. That was George. His foresight was so sharp and so incredible. Then the number of people he brought in who then went on ... A Ockershausen: A lot of young people he taught the business to. We hear it all the time. Jim Vance: Taught the business to. Lindsay to this day, sings the praises of ... A Ockershausen: Lindsay Cadillac I call her. Jim Vance: That's good enough too. Except I call her Lindsay Rolls Royce. A Ockershausen: She's great. So many people that went through George. The team and Bob Ryan was such a part of your interplay with the staff. The Chemistry WRC-TV: George, Bob, Arch, Doreen and Jim Jim Vance: And Arch. A Ockershausen: Arch. Jim Vance: And they all came at about the same time in the early 80s. Bob, George, and Arch. A Ockershausen: And Doreen. Jim Vance: Well Doreen came later. Doreen is now with us 27 years. A Ockershausen: I know that's incredible. Jim Vance: Well now let me tell you what's even more incredible. This is a testosterone overloaded set with George, Bob, Arch, and me. Here comes Doreen, this drop-dead gorgeous. Big hair ... A Ockershausen: Yeah big hairdo. Jim Vance: Right. From Philadelphia just late of Tennessee or someplace. Walked in and made it clear on the very first day, "don't be punking me out, because I can hang with you guys.

Jim Vance on the proper way to learn the language - "What’s it called? Diagramming. Remember we had to learn how to diagram a sentence? That’s how you learn the language by diagramming. When you know where every word goes and why it’s there. And what its point is. What its value is. I keep from hearing from all these kids I see today. Nobody ever taught them diagramming. They don’t even teach it anymore." Our Town host Andy Ockershausen and Legendary News Anchor Jim Vance, News4 A Ockershausen: And this is Our Town. We're so delighted, and honored frankly, that our next guest is a regular in our house. He probably doesn't know it, but we used to see him twice a night, now we only see you once. Jim Vance: But I like your house, man. I like the way you've done it. Janice Ockershausen:Thank you. Jim Vance: Janice, it's gorgeous in here. A Ockershausen: Jim Vance started out as a teacher. We'll find out what he was teaching. He's been a hostage negotiator, he's been Washingtonian of the Year. The two are not related, but he's had 19 Emmies. That's incredible. He's in the Black Journalist Hall of Fame. He's a member of the Silver Circle of the National Association of Television Arts & Sciences, an imposing figure with unbelievable street cred. His opinion pieces give him a personal connection to his audience. He's a force to be reckoned with. Welcome to Our Town, your town, Jim Vance. Jim Vance: Well, thank you, Andy. And I appreciate so much being here. And, Janice, thank you so much to the both of you. I mean that sincerely. There are so few people, and you can attest to this, in this town that we can speak of as friends for almost 50 years. That's to be treasured as far as I'm concerned, man. A Ockershausen: What we've found out when we brought back the idea of Our Town, was the talk about Our Town to people, and everybody was saying, "well gee, I haven't heard from him." Or, "I didn't know he did that. Gee that's just great." So we've been so fortunate to have people such as Jim Vance. And really thinking that Our Town is special. Jim Vance: Right. A Ockershausen: And even though he was born in Pennsylvania? And he went to school in Pennsylvania, and he went to Cheyney University. I didn't know that, Cheyney University is part of the state system isn't it? Jim Vance: It used to be. When I was there it was one of the 12 state teachers' colleges. And I need to say, because I need to make the alum proud, Cheyney in fact is the first HBCU in the country. It wasn't founded as Cheyney, because it was founded as a trade school for black people in America by the Quakers. In I think, if I'm not mistaken 1837. Now there are some of the other HBCUs every time I say that, they raise their hand or raise their fist and say, "no, we were first, because you weren't really a college then." Or whatever the case may be. I say to hell with them. Cheyney is the first HBCU in the country and I am so proud to have been there. And may I say that, I am also so proud of the graduates of Cheyney. Ed Bradley and I, late of 60 Minutes- A Ockershausen: I was at a recent party that was a salute to you. And Ed Bradley was the main speaker. I was there. Jim Vance: Yeah, you remember that? A Ockershausen: A special night. Jim Vance: But he and I went to Cheyney together at the same time, played ball together, lived together. I was the best man at his first wedding. He was the best man at my first wedding. And we've each had a couple or three, but anyway ... We hold that in common as well. Anyway, I am so proud of him and of all the other graduates of Cheyney State. It's now called Cheyney University, but for all of who ... I came out in '64, so for all of us were there back in the day, it's still Cheyney State. A Ockershausen: Jim, that's well over 50 years ago. But you were born in Ardmore. Is Ardmore on the main line? I see it in my mind's eye? Jim Vance: You know what?

Andy Ockershausen: Don't tell Theismann that. Christine Brennan: It's our secret. Don't tell him. Joe, if you're listening, sorry pal. But Doug Williams and then Mark Rypien. Three different quarterbacks, not a one of them is good enough to be in the hall of fame and Joe Gibbs wins Superbowls with all three including two strike years. The coach is amazing and to deal with, on the record, he'd get mad about something, he'd call me at home angry about a headline, I said, "Joe, coach," I'd call him coach, "I don't write the headlines." He goes, "I know, I know, will you bring the guy that writes the headlines out here one day and let me talk to him?" You know, like there was one guy writing the headlines, there was probably fifteen people writing headlines. But we'd have this conversation,

Coach Jim Vance joins the podcast as a repeat guest to talk about his new book, Triathlon 2.0: Data-Driven Performance Training. Jim worked on this book for 4 years before it’s release in early 2016. It’s a detailed book for serious athletes willing to look at their training data and use it to improve.  Jim was a former professional triathlete and now, as a well known coach, he has become an expert in analyzing training data.     This book builds on concepts in Joe Friel’s Triathlete’s Training Bible and uses charts and graphs to show how to use and understand your data. Even if you don’t use a power meter, and most experienced athletes should, you can still learn how to use data from your GPS unit to improve your running. I feel confident in saying this will be one of the most useful books for serious triathletes.   http://www.coachvance.com/ Does Running Shorten Your Lifespan?

I brought Jim onto our podcast because he has been at the forefront in research of Power Running.  Many believe that when power can be effectively measured in running, as has been cone in cycling, it will be a major game changer.  In sports science thus far; heart rate is the most effective metric used to identify work relative to performance.  This is an interesting time in endurance sport technology and our goal is to share some insight as to the potential of power as it applies to running performance. “All records, from 100 meters to the Marathon will drop, when we are able to effectively measure power in training”.
