In this episode of Michigan Hidden History, we step into the quiet charm of the H.C. Lewis Art Gallery, where small-town soul meets fine art flair. Nestled in the heart of Coldwater, this gallery honors the legacy of local artist H.C. Lewis, a man who believed every brushstroke told a story—and sometimes, that story involved a cow or two. From stunning landscapes to quirky community portraits, we explore how this hidden gem became a cultural beacon for Branch County. So grab your beret (or your best flannel), and join us for a colorful dive into Coldwater's creative side.

My guest is Dr. Melissa Ilardo, Ph.D., professor of biomedical informatics at the University of Utah. We discuss the interplay between genes and behaviors, including how certain behaviors can improve resilience by changing gene and organ function, as well as natural selection events happening in humans today. We also discuss the immune system–related reasons people find the smells of potential mates attractive—or not. We explore how physical and psychological traits are passed from one generation to the next, and the specific behaviors that can influence gene expression to improve health and performance. Melissa explains her lab's pioneering research on breath-hold training and how activation of the dive reflex through breath holding can significantly improve oxygen availability by changing spleen size and function. We also delve into the medical uses and ethics of gene editing to cure disease in both babies and adults. For those interested in genes and inheritance, human performance, immune system function, and natural selection, this episode illustrates the remarkable interplay between human nature and nurture. This week on Michigan Hidden History, we tour Coldwater's Wing House Museum—a home built for love, sold out of spite, and inherited by a Civil War hero turned cigar mogul. It's a story full of failed romance, steam-powered explosions, and bold real estate moves. Come for the Victorian architecture, stay for the marital drama and historical pettiness.

Welcome to The Waffle Shop!Today I'm by Natasha Wicks — a professional cuddler and mental health therapist — to explore the transformative power of touch and the often misunderstood world of cuddle therapy.Natasha shares her unique journey into this unconventional form of healing, explaining how cuddle therapy supports emotional well-being by helping clients feel safe, seen, and supported. The conversation dives into the impact of the pandemic on human connection, the therapeutic role of music and cold water therapy, and the growing need for non-sexual physical touch in today's fast-paced, disconnected world.Taylor and Natasha also unpack techniques like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and how it's used to help process trauma. Together, they debunk common myths about cuddle therapy and highlight how intentional, platonic touch can play a crucial role in mental health, self-worth, and emotional regulation. If you want to find out more about Cuddle Therapy please check out Natasha's work - https://natashawicksmindmatters.co.uk/ Hosted on Acast. The practice of immersing your body in ice water is growing in popularity based on claims of improved mood and well-being, muscle recovery after exercise, even longevity. But this ignores the well-established fact that sudden cardiac death is a real risk due to coronary spasm, causing heart attack, and unstable heart rhythms due to a situation called autonomic conflict. There are a growing number of lawsuits that have been filed for the many sudden cardiac deaths that have occurred. So let's discuss what we know about this concept of cold water immersion and why it is such a dangerous practice. • Immersion in water around 15°C/60°F triggers dangerous physiological responses• Cold exposure causes coronary arteries to spasm, potentially leading to heart attack• Most adults have some degree of endothelial dysfunction, making them vulnerable• "Autonomic conflict" occurs when both nervous system branches activate simultaneously• Multiple lawsuits have been filed over deaths from ice baths and polar plunges• Safer alternatives exist for achieving the claimed benefits of cold exposure• Cold showering (starting warm and gradually cooling) may offer similar benefits with less risk________________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
