Marcia Claesson emailed: "I love Scottish music. It's hard to pick one. I suppose if we're talking traditional Scottish ballads, I would say "Skye Boat Song." So if I only have one vote, that would be it. However, if we're talking instrumental, I would say "Niel Gow's Lament on the Death of His Second Wife." And modern songs? Nothing beats Dougie MacLean's "Caledonia." Thanks so much for your music. I hope you come to Lincoln, Nebraska (or somewhere close) sometime." Allan Marcotte emailed: "Favorite Scottish song? Either "Sound the Pibroch" or "Welcome Royal Charlie". What can I say I am a hopeless romantic, there is nothing better than standing with and fighting for a lost cause against impossible odds." Garrett Crowe emailed a photo: "Marc, I'm going through unemployment now, which means lots of tedious work I'm not very good at while job hunting... and trying to keep my spirits up. Nothing does it better than my Dungeons and Dragons sessions and listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. Episode 23 – Spirit of PlaceKitty has a bee in her bonnet! The time has come to clear the air and take a look at one of the foundations of believing and understanding Faerie Folklore: Spirit of Place.*Traditional Irish and Celtic Folklore doesn’t bark or harangue us.It seeps, quietly, into the corners of our mind and memories. It speaks to each of us without prejudice. In this episode, Kitty ponders the experience of being an Irish, or Celtic, descendant and asks:Is it wrong, or offensive, for someone outside of Ireland to discuss Irish Folklore? Why do millions of Americans, Canadians and Australians feel such a powerful connection to the homeland of their Ancestors. What is Spirit of Place anyway, and what’s it got to do with Ancestral Memory?*As always, Kitty explains why it’s okay to feel passionately about the homeland of your Ancestors and encourages everyone to relax and keep an open mind.Read stories of encounters with the Good People, and share your own story of an encounter or perhaps one handed down through your family at www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.com . Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. Last year, Irish Times' reviewer Joseph O'Connor raved, “It’s hard to imagine a more exciting debut novel being published this year. This book is a stunning and wonderful achievement by a writer touched by greatness.” Surpisingly, the book was not written by Tim Taylor or by Mike Shevlin but written by Sara Baume from County Cork and the book is "Spill Simmer Falter Wither". On her first tour through the U.S. supporting the book, Sara visits the Windy City Irish Radio studio to discuss her career and her fantastic book about a man and his one-eyed dog. AND, there's music. Listen for a whole lotta banjo from County Meath's Damaris Woods, Galway's We Banjo 3 and NYC's The Narrowbacks, a Scottish three-fer from The Old Blind Dogs, Tannahill Weavers and the great Dougie MacLean, and tunes from Mary Black, The Henry Girls, and Glen Hansard. Join Mike and Tim each Wednesday night from 8 - 9 PM on WSBC 1240 AM or check out the podcast www.windycityirishradio.com.

CeltiSode 2010!Happy (Belated) St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!!First off, let me please humbly apologize for the HUGE delay that this episode has weathered. Thank you so much for your patience! I truly hope you find the show well worth the wait. :):) Whether you hear this on St. Paddy's itself or tune in during any other time of the year, I hope this day brings nothing but joy to you and yours, and that you enjoy this slightly super-sized episode as much as I do. (And that's after listening to it a million times during its arrangement, so that's saying something! ;D)This show is chock-full of fantastic music, made by some unbelievably skilled & gifted musicians! Some of this is work I've collected over many, many years (through places like myriad renaissance festivals, Thistle & Shamrock shows, and a good few Celtic festivals), while other pieces were acquired more recently; explicitly for play on this show. Celtic music has been a part of my heart for as long as I can remember, and I hope its soulfulness, passion and playfulness always will. :)Finding and playing the best of pod-safe Celtic music for you seems a superb way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (musically speaking)- but for me, this music can make any day of the year an occasion. Plus, what a gift! I have found more phenomenal music in searching for pieces for this podcast than I can count! What a delight to've found sublime chanteuses like Maria Dunn, Beth Patterson and the ladies of Maidens IV!! And what a blessing to be able to share such personal favorites as The Rogues & Lothlorien, as well as a more recent favorite; the enthralling, enchanting power of Omnia! Each of these pieces hold their own magic and beauty, whether it be sweet & lilting or raucous and irreverent. And don't just relegate this lovely brand of tune-age to St. Paddy's! Celtic music goes beautifully at pubs, renaissance fairs, faerie-themed events, barn dances, and all kinds of events where merry-making is called for- even funerals on occasion- so keep it in mind the next time you go out with family & friends!Whether you're Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx or Scots-Irish (like yours truly), if you're English, German, Italian, Asian, Greek, Indian, American, Black Irish or French, may the luck of the Irish always be with you, and may you find your own pot of gold in pleasures big and small on this clover-filled, merrily-jigging day! (Just be careful with the Guinness, Harp Lager & Goldschläger, please! We want you around to celebrate the NEXT St. Paddy's, too! ;D)Now let me pick my fiddle back up again, and have a merry St. Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List1. (Although other parts of the world still identify strongly with their Celtic roots, such as Caledonia in Spain, Newfoundland in Canada, Brittany in France, as well as much of the American south; especially those in and around the Appalachian & Rocky ountains.)Don't believe me? Listen to some of the folk music from these areas (including much of old as well as new American Country- from Bluegrass on), and see if you don't hear a Celtic lilt to many of fiddle tunes & melodies!
