Today I'm answering a question from Emma Thomas, 'When you feel like you're doing all the things and trying to tick all the boxes but feel like you are getting nowhere - what was the pivotal moment for you when things started falling into place and you felt like you'd turned the corner?' In this episode Kate Toon talks about recognizing success in one's entrepreneurial journey. Kate explains that the feeling of 'making it' is elusive and often fleeting, as new goals continually replace achieved ones. She reflects on her own experiences, highlighting key moments such as the financial success of her SEO course and a pivotal event at CopyCon. Kate emphasizes the importance of acknowledging small victories and warns against the constant pressure to push for more. She advises embracing the ongoing struggle and balancing drive with moments of contentment. It often begins with one person transitioning, followed by the partner adopting a non-binary identity or similar. In some cases, this trajectory extends to their children, with multiple kids identifying as transgender. Videos circulating online depict adults posing leading questions to very young children, as young as four or five years old, which appear to steer the child towards identifying as transgender. What could be behind this phenomenon? In this bonus episode for premium subscribers, Emma Thomas describes the destabilizing effect her father's transition had on her sense of self and the significant disruption and uncertainty she experienced regarding her own identity and place within both her family as well as within society.Watch our full length episode with Emma Thomas: https://www.widerlenspod.com/p/episode-169 To listen to our premium content in your favorite podcast app click here for Substack instructions on setting up a private feed.

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN SZN!FOLLOWING *SEASON PREMIERE*For Season 12 *Nolan Void*, TGTPTU continues its iconic practice of pairing bookended movies from a director's filmography, first and last until we pair the middlemost. This season we cover the twelve movies of the granddaddy/infant son of the temporal pincer movement himself Christopher Nolan, starting with his inaugural feature: the independently-made, London-shot B&W film FOLLOWING (1998) Initiating a series of noir films leading to greater projects, the technically-minded Nolan leans into his budget limitations, writing a script whose three timelines will allow him to edit around missing or unusable footage filmed on weekends with novice actors (excepting his uncle and future Wayne Enterprises board member professional British actor John Nolan) and crew from University College, London where young Nolan studied English Literature (and met his future wife). Aside from working fulltime for a commercial film agency creating corporate videos, the other reason for weekend shoots was the self-financing pool of limited funds available after each paycheck to purchase and develop more 16mm B&W film with Nolan operating the camera and his wife Emma Thomas serving as an extra in addition to her professional role as producer. Sensitive to budget and realism, Nolan states in Criterion Collection commentary that the choice of a hammer instead of gun was due to fake guns when wielded in indie films often looked fake but a fake hammer has right weight.Nolan would end up moving to the States to enter Following into festivals where it received much buzz but no distributors, leading Steven Soderbergh at the time to comment: “And I watched it and came out of there thinking ‘That's it. When a movie this good can't get released, the [the 1990's independent movie wave is] over.”Special thanks this week to Ryan for returning to the podcast to discuss this film (and less so for its paired OPPENHEIMER coming next week) as well as extra editing by co-host Ken for splicing back into linearity other co-host Thomas's bit of jumbling up his commentary into three styles of slurred speech: his normal, as he's increasingly intoxicated, and after biting (literally) his tongue while making a “Stop, Hammer time” joke. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Inception is a 2010 science fiction action film[4][5][6] written and directed by Christopher Nolan, who also produced the film with Emma Thomas, his wife. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets. He is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment for the implantation of another person's idea into a target's subconscious.[7] The ensemble cast includes Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page,[a] Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Dileep Rao, and Michael Caine. After the 2002 completion of Insomnia, Nolan presented to Warner Bros. a written 80-page treatment for a horror film envisioning "dream stealers," based on lucid dreaming.[8] Deciding he needed more experience before tackling a production of this magnitude and complexity, Nolan shelved the project and instead worked on 2005's Batman Begins, 2006's The Prestige, and 2008's The Dark Knight.[9] The treatment was revised over six months and was purchased by Warner in February 2009.[10] Inception was filmed in six countries, beginning in Tokyo on June 19 and ending in Canada on November 22.[11] Its official budget was $160 million, split between Warner Bros. and Legendary.[12] Nolan's reputation and success with The Dark Knight helped secure the film's US$100 million in advertising expenditure. Inception's premiere was held in London on July 8, 2010; it was released in both conventional and IMAX theaters beginning on July 16, 2010.[13][14] Inception grossed over $837 million worldwide, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2010. Considered one of the best films of the 2010s,[15] Inception won four Oscars (Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects) and was nominated for four more (Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score) at the 83rd Academy Awards.

Imagine this: possessing the power to not only understand your customers' deepest desires but also plant ideas in their minds, making them believe it was their idea from the very start. It may sound like something straight out of a dream, but it may not be as far-fetched as it seems. See, the genius of Christopher Nolan's Inception conceals marketing insights if you look close enough. It's the marketing movie you never knew was about marketing. While we can't offer you a PASIV device to enter your customers' dreams, we can provide you with the tools to craft marketing strategies that work like inception - subtly influencing, inspiring, and engaging your audience. So in this episode, we're deciphering the intricate layers of marketing with the help of Emburse's Chief Experience Officer, Johann Wrede. Together, we discuss how to utilize emotions to ‘plant ideas' in your customers' heads, avoid fixating on initial customer expectations throughout the customer journey, and leave room for your customers to co-create their narrative to boost engagement. So grab your totem for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Johann WredeJohann Wrede is the Chief Experience Officer at Emburse. He is responsible for leading a cross-functional marketing and customer success organization, with the goal of delivering a world-class customer experience from first awareness through subscription renewal.  Over the course of the last 25 years, Johann has written, implemented, sold and marketed a variety of customer database, CRM and customer experience (CX) products. An evangelist for customer experience, he has delivered keynotes and press interviews in 18 different countries, and written numerous articles on the topic.About EmburseEmburse is the global leader in spend optimization. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character, Dominic, or Dom, Cobb, who is basically gifted with this ability that's made him extremely successful, but he's lost everything because of it. Namely, his marriage and children. His wife is played by Marion Cotillard. And so he's kind of haunted by her in his subconscious and she ends up sort of thwarting his every move. So anyway, he's given a chance to redeem himself by planting an idea in someone's mind, and having to go layers deep into their subconscious, which is of course, a nearly impossible task. The movie was released in 2010, and directed by Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, Dunkirk, latest Batman series with Christian Bale AND Memento). Nolan also produced it along with Emma Thomas - his wife and producing partner - for Warner Bros. It also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur, Elliot Page as Ariadne, and Tom Hardy as Eames. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Inception:Utilize emotions to ‘plant ideas'.  Emotions are your superpower to accessing the deepest corners of your customers' minds. People don't just buy; they invest for emotional reasons—this is an intrinsic part to our human nature. Johann says, “our whole mission is to plant ideas into customers' heads and convince them that it was their idea from the first. And the first time I saw [Inception], that is, it just jumped out at me and I thought, wow, that really sums up the marketing profession in a nutshell.”Don't fixate on initial customer expectations. Customers evolve, and so should your strategy. What matters most in the end is if they are happy. Just as Inception leaves us with an ambiguous ending, Cobb's happiness is undeniable. Whether it's a dream or reality, his happiness is the ultimate goal, mirroring how you should approach your customer journey. Johann emphasizes, “it doesn't actually matter if the value that they thought they were going to get is the value that they got. What's more important is that the value that they want right now is the value that they're getting right now. Are they happy with the result?”Leave room for your customers to co-create their narrative. This fuels customer engagement and is exactly what Christopher Nolan did when creating Inception. We witness this concept in two distinct ways: co-creation within the dream state, as the dream world is designed in a way that allows the subject to fill in details, and ambiguity in the ending, with Inception's enigmatic conclusion inviting audience speculation. Johann says, “All too often, we build these elaborate cities that we put our buyer into. And we orchestrate this narrative that is so complete and so full. And we try to be so precise in our language that we don't leave room for them to bring their own perception and perspective to it.”Quotes“One of my first sales mentors said to me, people buy for emotional reasons and then back it up with facts. That became really clear to me that what we needed to do as marketers was peel away those layers of the onion and get past the business person and down to the human, and speak to that person.” - Johann Wrede“If you can create content that authentically seeks to inform and to add value, then you start to move into the trusted advisor quadrant, which is where you really want to be. And the other piece of this puzzle is that we have to look at the content we create through the lens of the customer journey.”  - Johann WredeTime Stamps[01:00] Introducing Chief Experience Officer at Emburse, Johann Wrede[1:34] Why are we talking about Inception?[3:34] Tell me more about Inception [13:48] What are some marketing lessons we can learn from Inception?[22:16] Marketing insights from Inception's mind-bending ending[32:02] How to identify needs and craft messages that resonate[45:53] How does Johann think about content marketing?[54:49] Johann's view on the ROI of content[57:49] Johann's favorite upcoming marketing campaigns at EmburseLinksWatch InceptionConnect with Johann on LinkedInLearn more about EmburseAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Christopher Nolan is best known for reviving the Batman film franchise and for directing the blockbusters Inception and Dunkirk. His films have taken nearly $5 billion at the box office. Born in London in 1970 to an English father and an American mother, he discovered film-making at the age of seven. In what he describes as "a leap of faith", his father lent him his Super 8 camera - and he's not stopped making films since. From youthful experiments, manipulating his action figures and shooting stop motion animations, he progressed to making short films at university where he read English - although he spent more time at University College London's Bloomsbury Theatre, home to the film society, than the lecture theatre. His first feature film, Following, had enough festival exposure and critical success to secure him his first official budget of $4.5 million to make his next film, Memento. In 2005 he was hailed for reinventing the Caped Crusader in the dark and gritty Batman Begins. He regularly works with the same actors and production team including his long-time producer, his wife, Emma Thomas. Presenter: Kirsty Young Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

Was there a role that you really wanted but didn't get? How did you feel about that experience?  It's ok to have a good cry about it! Actor/Coach/Creative Lucy Russell enlightens us in this week's episode that when we lose a role that we really want, it's the same as losing a person; our hearts do not know the difference. Let's be kinder to ourselves and allow these feelings to come up in a wave and get them out of our body.  You are not alone in going through these seasons of rejection; what's meant for you will come to you. In this episode: Lucy's journey in being her own compassionate critic when watching her performance. The biggest and most beautiful thing about films is that any story can touch people in really unexpected ways. How the uncertainty brought by the pandemic lead us to crave for stories with predictable endings. Lucy's plan of developing the incredible stories created by actors who didn't think they could write. Share This Episode >>  www.thisischelseajohnson.com/224 A little about Lucy: Lucy Russell started acting in her late twenties, having tried too many other jobs to count and having got a degree in Italian and Business at UCL in London. Her first feature was also Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas's first film, Following. After a couple of years of drama school, she played the title role in Eric Rohmer's French language film The Lady and the Duke, (which had the most insanely beautiful hand-sewn costumes designed by Pierre-Jean Larroque). She played Missy LeHand in CineNord's Atlantic Crossing, which won the 2021 International Emmy for TV Movie/Miniseries and Steph in Toni Erdmann, the German nominee for Best International Feature at the 89th Academy Awards, named best film of 2016 by Sight and Sound magazine, by Film Comment and by Cahiers du Cinema. She's worked across genres with incredible directors in French and English: she's been head of the CIA and MI5; a trophy wife; a serial killer; a UN delegate; a toxic mother; leader of a galactic empire; a cult member; generally been like a pig in sh*t exploring as many facets of human expression as she can get her dirty paws on. She's also a real person outside acting and has a life there, too, which, frankly, is not to be sniffed at. Follow Lucy! Helping your child sleep better. The number of children being prescribed the previous jet lag hormone melatonin to help their child sleep has nearly tripled in the past seven years. Melatonin is indeed not a sleep hormone but a biological marker of darkness.” For example, in humans and other diurnal animals, the release of melatonin into the bloodstream helps prepare the body for sleep.  A recent study from the Netherlands suggested that teenagers' sleep problems can improve after just one week by limiting evening exposure to light-emitting screens on mobile phones, tablets and computers.  Overexposure before bedtime to blue light emitted from devices can affect the brain's clock and the production of the melatonin hormone, resulting in disrupted sleep time and quality.  So is sleep medication being overused by children? Speaking to Colin Espie, a professor of sleep medicine in the Nuffield department of clinical neuroscience at the University of Oxford, is one of many leading experts worried by this trend. “We seem to be socialising our youngsters into the idea that sleep is difficult, and you need tablets for it,” he says. Instead, he explains, our focus should be on helping them to establish healthy sleep patterns at home. As stark new NHS figures show, children are experiencing an epidemic of sleeping problems amid a sharp decline in their mental health triggered by the pandemic. Insomnia can exacerbate an underlying mental or physical health problem.  Emma Thomas, YoungMinds' chief executive, said: there is alarming pressure young people face with their mental health, with many experiencing isolation, loneliness, and reduced support caused partly by the pandemic. Here are some valuable tips.  Prepare children's minds for sleep (even your three-year-old can meditate) If we want children to sleep naturally, teaching simple, mindful noticing skills can be helpful, says Dr Guy Meadows, co-founder and clinical lead at the London clinic Sleep School. At Sleep School, children as young as three are taught to meditate. “You don't tell them they're meditating and put their favourite teddy on their tummy, lie on the floor with them, and they just watch the teddy go up and down.” It calms the mind, preparing it for rest. You might also ask: “What are you grateful for today?” The important thing is that “we're shifting the mind into a state more conducive to sleep”. Don't tell your nine-year-old to ‘go to sleep now! We see an increase in sleep anxiety in children from the age of six, Meadows says — “an explosion of the mind's ability to create worry”. Meanwhile, almost all parents tell their children, “It's time to sleep!” or “Get to sleep now!” If a child is struggling, that can pressure them. Instead, say: “Let's just see if you can rest.” Every child can rest. Rather than insist they sleep when you know they're not ready, Espie asks: “How can my child have some quiet wakefulness?” It's essential to be a good role model, Meadows says. “You can't expect your children to be off their devices if you're sitting in bed watching Netflix, scrolling through your phone.” Let your anxious seven-year-old sleep in your bed. When primary-age children are anxious and sleepless, they often seek comfort in their parents' beds. And many parents let them — for months. They often feel as if this is some failure. It's the opposite, Espie says. No parent should feel guilty about this. Treating your child's sleep issue as a shared responsibility takes effort and is the right thing to do. You're guiding them towards better sleep habits. “This is about habit training,” he says. In this situation, your child's initial habit is struggling to settle and be awake alone in bed at night. They are stressed and need reassurance.” Letting him sleep with you solves that problem and breaks that habit.

We always say you can make a movie in just 10-15 minutes a day. Production is usually the exception to that rule. But not for Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas. They shot their first feature film in intervals of 15 minutes every weekend for 14 weeks. In his own words:"I didn't raise anything, I had a job and I was receiving regular pay cheques for the first time in my life. I would spend half on my rent and the other half on film stock and processing. Whatever I had, I'd work out how much footage I could shoot that week.  I knew that if we ran out of money we could just stop for a couple of weeks. I was not going to process anything because that was expensive, I was just going to keep shooting. You need time. And that doesn't mean necessarily even working full-time on it itself; it means time to throw some ideas together and then let them sit, go off and do something else, come back and see what still feels right and everything."Make Your Feature Film (Free Step-by-Step Guide):www.InvisibleMansion.com/FreeChecklistLearn about the Feature Filmmaker Program:www.InvisibleMansion.com/FeatureFilmmaker

In this episode we find out how our Smarter Choices, Smarter Places (SCSP) programme is supporting partnerships to deliver social prescribing projects.SCSP Manager Graham McQueen chats to three guests who have used our funding to deliver interventions that are improving social, mental and physical health and wellbeing through active and sustainable travel and being outdoors.Inverness GP Dr Katie Walter explains what social prescribing is, how it attempts to break down the barriers people face to improving their health and wellbeing, and how she prefers the term "patient empowerment". She also discusses her own project which has so far helped 400 patients to get active and improve their health.Dr Viola Marx, from NHS Tayside, gives an overview of how her project reinvented the traditional medical prescription by turning it green and prescribing an activity rather than a drug.Forth Environment Link's Emma Thomas talks about how social prescribing worked with a select group of cancer patients in the Forth Valley and what effect the introduction of an ebike had on their recovery and outlook. All our guests discuss the many benefits of social prescribing including its role in the climate emergency. For more information on SCSP and how to apply for a grant, visit www.pathsforall.org.uk/scspopenfund.

A Warner Bros. Just wanted to send my love during what is a difficult time for all movie & Marvel lovers. The loss of Chadwick Boseman is tragic and has sent ripples across the world showing how far his reach as not only T'Challa but just as an amazing actor and human has gone. I hope that everyone who has been touched by this can find time to heal and remember him for the incredibly moving, intelligent and talented person that he was. So how are people planning to make it through to September? In her book Sex Robots and Vegan Meat, journalist Jenny Kleeman explores seismic changes in four core areas of human experience: birth, food, sex and death. Jane will be talking to Jenny about the implications of fully functioning artificial wombs, what sex robots mean for future relationships between men and women, who the people are shaping the technological changes taking place and how soon these inventions will become an inevitable part of human life. Join Anita de Waard as she explores the study with two of the authors, Emma Thomas and Bamini Jayabalasingham, in an attempt to explore some of the factors attributing to their findings and the impact the results have on the larger research landscape.SHOW NOTES:Invited commentaries are short articles that provide an author’s personal perspective or view points on a leading, significant or controversial topic. Typically the invited author is a leading expert in the subject matter and usually invited by the editor. “In medical journals, publication of an invited commentary is a recognition of expertise and can raise an author’s profile.” (Emma Thomas in Women scientists author fewer invited commentaries in medical journals than men with comparable credentials) Articles mentioned in the podcast:Original study referenced in this episode: Gender Disparities in Invited Commentary Authorship in 2459 Medical Journals Referenced Holman et al article: The gender gap in science: How long until women are equally represented Related articles and interesting reads:I thought patriarchy in science was fading.
