On today's episode of The Lives of Writers, Teresa Carmody interviews Kristen E. Nelson.Kristen E. Nelson is a queer writer, performer, and community builder. In addition to In the Away Time (Autofocus Books, 2024), she is the author of the length of this gap (Damaged Goods, August 2018) and two chapbooks: sometimes I gets lost and is grateful for noises in the dark (Dancing Girl, 2017) and Write, Dad (Unthinkable Creatures, 2012). She has published creative and critical writing in Feminist Studies, Bombay Gin, Denver Quarterly, Drunken Boat, Tarpaulin Sky Journal, Trickhouse, and Everyday Genius, among others. Kristen is the founder of Casa Libre en la Solana, a non-profit writing center in Tucson, Arizona, where she worked as the Executive Director for 14 years and the co-founder of Four Queens with Selah Saterstrom. Kristen is currently a Ph.D. student and graduate student instructor at the University of California – Santa Cruz in the Literature Department's creative/critical writing concentration.Teresa Carmody's writing includes fiction, creative nonfiction, inter-arts collaborations, and hybrid forms. She is the author of three books and four chapbooks, including Maison Femme: a fiction (2015) and The Reconception of Marie (2020).   Book Vs Movie “The Manchurian Candidate” The Richard Condon Novel Vs. the 1962 John Frankenheimer Cult Classic   The Margos have a thing for espionage and intrigue in this ep talking about the Richard Condon 1959 novel The Manchurian Candidate which was bought by Frank Sinatra and United Artists films and made into a controversial movie in 1962. Detailing the life of former infantrymen who are brainwashed by the Soviet Union while captured in the Korean War and who later aim to overthrow the United States via a presidential election--it was considered a classic “bad book” by Time magazine (which meant it as a compliment) and seems prescient considering what is happening in politics today. The story of Major Bennett Marco and Sergeant Raymond Shaw and how deal with recurring nightmares over what they experienced makes up the rest of the book. In short, Shaw can become an assassin when given a “posthypnotic trigger” and his mother is married to Senator Johnny Iselin. She and Ray have an incestual relationship and she is working with the Communists to get her husband elected president. The movie stars Sinatra as Marco and was directed by John Frankenheimer to little excitement in 1962 (go figure!) One year later President Kennedy was assassinated and the film was pulled from the public with fears it influenced Lee Harvey Oswald who was known to be a regular movie-goer. Youngest of seven children, with his dad in the military, Rob was destined to a life in service to follow in his father's footsteps. However, his parents' divorce and a move to Alaska changed his outcome, resulting in Rob struggling to keep up with classes and not graduating high school. In his early teens, Rob travelled back to Huntingdon Beach and met UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz – a relationship that would eventually lead to a further UFC link through President Dana White. It didn't take long for Rob to discover gym life and try kickboxing at LA Boxing, before progressing to Brazilian jiu jitsu. The passion for the fight game had been born and only bigger things were to come. Working with his BJJ instructor, Rob progressed a career teaching combat classes from basic burpees, jumping jacks and bag work to the robust programming hub he implements in UFC GYMs today. From sparring unknowingly with a kickboxing champion, Rob's second ever pro am fight was at the Four Queens on Freemont Street in Las Vegas. His first found stoppage of his opponent preceded a night of celebration and a desire to fight as a career. Early on, Rob received advice from Bill Goldberg of WWE and WCW wrestling fame. He said: “Just remember… Potential. It means you haven't done shit yet.” What followed was Rob's championship win in World Extreme Cagefighting, before returning to his roots. After getting a job at LA Boxing – Rob's first fight gym – as director of instructor training, the chain was acquired by Mark Mastrov and UFC GYMs. Today, UFC GYM is the result of a partnership between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and New Evolution Ventures, in an expanding initiative urging people to TRAIN DIFFERENT. The Four Queens isn't exactly where you would think of when you think of an evening of fine dining on Fremont St. Never heard of Hugo's Cellar? Don’t be surprised. It’s literally in the basement of the property.  It’s probably the best place to eat at 4 Queens but the fact that I had to use the word says something but that isn’t saying much in a place with only 3 places to eat and one is a coffee shop.  It’s described as one of those places that capture the “old school ambiance” of high end dining in Vegas.  Each woman receives a rose, the sommelier visits each table to help find the perfect wine to pair with your meal and even the salad is prepared table side, a la cart.  Charm, wit and customer service served in small portions are all apart of the dining experience at Hugo’s Cellar.  In a word, romantic.

This week, the Global Gaming Business Podcast features an interview with Terry Caudill, the president and CEO of TLC Casino Enterprises, which owns the Four Queens and Binions in Downtown Las Vegas. Caudill started his career as a keno writer at Harrah's Reno. Later while with Circus Circus, he ventured into the neighborhood bar-casino scene in Las Vegas. He bought the Four Queens in 2003 and recently took over Binions when MTR Gaming sold out. As a former casino worker, Caudill understands the importance of the employees, while at the same time, catering to the needs and desires of his customers. His commitment to the Downtown market is unshakable and his plans are extensive. Caudill spoke with Global Gaming Business Associate Editor Greg Jones via phone from his Las Vegas office in October.
