“Fair is fair! We didn't start this, we didn't mean it to happen, but we're not giving up until you pay. FAIR IS FAIR!” We watched “The Legend of Billie Jean” with Jesse Krempel, the wonderful host of “Cult Cinema Circle,” and we need to make an appointment with our hairstylist. This often overlooked gem from the 1980s chronicles outlaw teens on the run from the cops, their parents, and a sleazy businessman while going “viral” in a pre-social media world. Billie Jean, played by a drop-dead gorgeous Helen Slater, and her brother Binx (teeny-teen Christian Slater - no relation) run afoul of some local dirtbags who then steal and trash Binx's prize Honda Elite scooter. The stakes are actually sort of low - but it's the principle of the matter which makes Billie Jean and company local folk heroes. In a key moment, Billie Jean chops off her hair after being inspired by Joan of Arc; she is giving us some Vidal Sassoon, Sally Hershberger realness that would make Miss Tyra Banks herself proud. The kids in this movie are so ‘80s it would make the costumers on “Stranger Things” heads spin, and the soundtrack features the absolute BANGER “Invincible” by the legendary Pat Benatar. What happens when one of the biggest TV shows in the world makes the leap to Broadway? Alison Jaye takes us behind the scenes of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, where she steps into the role of Joyce Maldonado in a production unlike anything Broadway has ever seen. With audiences made up largely of first-time theatergoers, Alison describes what it feels like when the show plays like a full-on rollercoaster one night and like a hushed movie the next. She also opens up about the collaboration that shaped her character, the three-year journey from top-secret workshops to opening night, and why she calls Broadway the “Olympics of theater.” In this candid conversation, Alison talks about sustaining the physical, vocal, and mental energy needed for such a demanding role, and how she keeps curiosity and honesty at the center of her artistry. From discovering the surprises hidden within this massive production to finding joy in the unpredictability of live audiences, Alison brings humor, humility, and insight to a show that continues to expand the Stranger Things universe in thrilling new ways. Alison Jaye made her Broadway debut as a child in Sunday in the Park with George and later returned in Mary Poppins. She has built a wide-ranging career across stage, screen, and voice acting, including her BAFTA-nominated work in Horizon Forbidden West, and a featured role in Call Jane alongside Sigourney Weaver and Elizabeth Banks. She now stars as Joyce Maldonado in Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Broadway. This episode is powered by WelcomeToTimesSquare.com, the billboard where you can be a star for a day. Episode Info In this episode, I explore the paradox that is insurance. We buy risk from others, yet we are risk averse ourselves. Looking at the work of underwriters as compared to venture investors, you find that the skillset is actually nearly identical, but it's being deployed in opposite directions. I discuss that, why that might be, and what someone trying to bring innovation and change to insurance should keep in mind given this reality. Episode Highlights This episode is a unique and shorter installment with insights and reflections rather than our normal interview format. The focus is on exploring the concept of risk aversion within the insurance industry and comparing it to the venture capital world. Key Topics Discussed: Risk Aversion in Insurance:I see a paradox of risk aversion in an industry that essentially deals with buying and managing risk. Despite being in the business of risk, the insurance industry tends to be conservative and slow to change. Comparison with Venture Capital:A comparison is drawn between underwriters and venture capitalists, highlighting how both evaluate businesses but from different perspectives. While venture capitalists have a capped downside and potentially unlimited upside, underwriters face a capped upside and potentially unlimited downside. Analogies and Insights:I compare this to the Netflix show "Stranger Things" to describe the contrasting worlds of insurance and venture capital, likening them to the "Upside Down" and the real world. Economic Perspectives:Discussion on the economic frameworks within which underwriters and venture capitalists operate, emphasizing the differences in risk and reward dynamics. Personal Reflections:The episode includes personal anecdotes and reflections on the nature of risk, decision-making, and the psychological aspects of dealing with uncertainty. Conclusion: The episode concludes with a call to embrace conversations about risk and change, encouraging listeners to prepare for and adapt to new challenges in their professional environments. This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk.
Send us a textWhat happens when movie obsession meets podcast dedication? A journey from basement recordings to approaching 200 episodes of cinematic conversations.Looking back at nearly four years of podcasting, we laugh about our humble beginnings—passing a single microphone back and forth, recording in friends' basements, and overthinking every introduction. Those early technical struggles have evolved into a dedicated setup and growing audience, especially as our TikTok clips gain traction. Despite our full-time jobs limiting production time, our passion for watching and discussing films remains unwavering. The streaming landscape has captured our attention lately, with one host deep into Stranger Things for the first time ("It's such binge worthy... I'm hooked") while the other eagerly discusses Peacemaker's return. We dive into Margaret Qualley's dark comedy "Honey Don't," dissecting everything from its disjointed plot and excessive sex scenes to the star-studded cast including Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans. Sidney Sweeney's recent films "Eden" and "Americana" also get attention, with particular praise for Rod Howard's storytelling in "Eden" despite its limited theatrical promotion. Our conversation detours through Chance the Rapper's impressive new album, Tarantino's future projects, and the universal frustration of sitting through increasingly lengthy pre-movie advertisements ("sometimes it is 40 minutes before they start playing the movie"). Through it all, our enthusiasm for cinema shines through—whether recommending underrated gems or analyzing industry trends.Ready to join our movie-loving community? Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesIt would appear as though Ryan Reynold's social media stunt we discussed last week is having the intended effect as a few of our favorite trades can't seem to come to a consensus. First, in the August 15 edition of Heat Vision, The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive column for all things comics, horror and sci-fi, Borys Kitt claimed that their sources confirmed Deadpool's inclusion in Avengers: Doomsday. However, later that day Deadline refuted the speculation by citing their own sources who said the actor has not been seen on the London set and is not intended to appear in either upcoming Avengers film. In less nebulous Doomsday talk, Nightcrawler actor Alan Cumming described his experience returning to the role as healing, after a terrible experience on 2003's X2. It's a big week for DC Studios with Superman hitting Video-On-Demand last Friday and Peacemaker Season 2 premiering this Thursday. While on the red carpet for the show's debut in New York, DC Studios head and Peacemaker's showrunner James Gunn defended Superman's quick availability for home viewing after just 35 days in theaters, by sharing how the film impacts the series. “It's a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker,” said Gunn, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. “Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it's incredibly important,” he continued. Gunn also teased the future for Superman on the big screen, saying, “I've already finished the treatment for the next story in what I'll call the ‘Superman Saga.' The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I'm working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”Back to the Wasteland we go, as Amazon's marketing for Fallout Season 2 has begun in preparation for its December 17 premiere, with a full-court press that includes first look images and a trailer that was released earlier today. The images showcase returning characters played by Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Moises Arias, Aaron Moten and Kyle McLachlan, while the two minute 42-second trailer gave us our first glimpse at Justin Theroux's enigmatic Mr. House and McCauley Caulkin in an undisclosed role, which were of course accompanied, yet again, by the crooning stylings of The Ink Spots. In an interview with Collider, Marvel Zombies director Bryan Andrews confirmed that the series has moved its release date up to September 24th, and all episodes of the series will be available to stream at once. He also confirmed that the four episodes will be rated TV-MA.At a recent London fan event Sir Ian McKellen claimed Frodo and Gandalf will appear in Andy Serkis' upcoming The Hunt for Gollum film without specifying whether he and Elijah Wood would reprise their iconic roles.NBCUniversal announced that it has acquired all rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum's popular Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series.Weapons took the number one spot at the box office again in its second weekend with a drop of only 43%, bringing its worldwide total to nearly $150 million dollars. Nobody 2 generated around $15 million dollars worldwide in its opening weekend on a $25 million dollar budget.Netflix has dropped a trailer for the second half of season 2 of Wednesday, which will stream on September 3rd.Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers are in talks for a massive overall deal with Paramount that includes both streaming and features with a big theatrical component, something the pair have not been able to get at their current home of more than a decade, Netflix.Original Scary Movie actresses Regina Hall and Anna Faris are coming back as Brenda and Cindy, respectively, for the Wayans Brothers' restart of the comedy franchise, which is eyeing a 2026 release.
General of Boravia Martin Harris has had not just an interesting career in pop culture, but his path to becoming an actor took him from being in a rock band, to working with the NBA, to being an actor. The advice to be an actor came from Black Mamba himself, Kobe Bryant. And for the first time ever I'm pretty sure, we talk about Bronny and LeBron James. Good thing Kobe pointed him in the right direction or we would have never seen him in shows like Young Sheldon, Stranger Things, or even one of the biggest movies of the summer of 2025 - Superman. Martin plays the General of Boravia in that movie. And if you haven't seen Superman yet, WHAT ARE YA WAITING FOR?
