118: Embracing the Power of Philanthropy as a Nonprofit LeaderSUMMARYPhilanthropy is the lifeblood of nonprofit organizations, but the acquisition of charitable dollars can be a motivational barrier for many nonprofit leaders. We all have hang-ups about money, and that can hurt our enthusiasm to actually ask for funds for the causes we care deeply about. Charles Thomas has been on both sides of philanthropy, as an executive director of two organizations, and now the Program Director for a national foundation making investments in critical community needs. In episode #118 of the Path Podcast, Charles breaks down these barriers to fundraising and offers practical advice to help you turn your hesitation into enthusiasm for the investments you'll be seeking. ABOUT CHARLESCharles Thomas joined the Knight Foundation in February of 2016, and under his leadership the Foundation has invested over $25M in the Historic West End, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and in numerous Charlotte arts and local journalism initiatives. Raised in Charlotte, Thomas is the former executive director of Queen City Forward, a hub for entrepreneurs who have business ideas that address social needs. Prior to leading Queen City Forward, he served as the education director of The Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film. A professional photographer, Thomas co-published a book of photography and stories with author Valaida Fullwood titled “Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists.” In addition to winning the 2012 Terry McAdam Book Award, Thomas and Fullwood partnered with Johnson C. Smith University to create and launch a traveling exhibition titled the “Soul of Philanthropy: Reframed and Exhibited.” He serves on the board of trustees of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and is an active member of the New Generation of African American Philanthropy giving circle. Thomas earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Duke University. Chase made headlines this week, announcing they are tightening lending standards on mortgages. This created some panic across the consumer markets as homeowners and borrowers increased fear of the unknown. This headline is misleading - fake news even - about what is really going on in the residential housing market and the mortgage industry a whole. Troy has been in the real estate industry for over 23years now. He knew that real estate was his way to freedom and generational wealth, but didn't know exactly how to achieve that right off the bat. As a child, his punishment was painting the house. Ultimately, he became a very good painter, but knew that house flipping was NOT the way he was going to attack real estate. After much thought, and learning what it was that banks did to make money, he decided to exactly what they do, buy and sell paper. It meant no painting, no fixing toilets, no chasing rents, etc. Fast forward and he is now raising billions of dollars to buy up performing notes. Troy walks us through why he chose to raise money from institutions rather than individuals as well as where he thinks the market is going! Grab his book and visit his website to learn more about his company. You can even pitch your note to his company for purchase there! Moore). His Nomadic Archivist Project documents and preserves the African Diasporic experience. This initiative partners with organizations, institutions, and individuals to establish, preserve, and enhance collections. Fullwood lives to document the history of people of African descent. This week, Dom is back, this time for a discussion about politics; especially discussing Brexit, the left & the right and how we must find balance between them, the “ideal world” and much more! As shown by the above, this week is much more of a political podcast than the standard and as Dom & Mike are from England, the political realms of England is what is primarily spoken about, however among this, minimum wage, hard work, communism, accountability, a sprinkling of American politics and the rapper Akala are all also discussed! Last week’s chat with Dom was vastly different to this weeks and listing everything they discussed would take far too long (and would be dull to read) but a few notable topics were language & the differences between UK-English and American-English, how hard it is for our generation to buy property, the younger generation and the internet days just-before Facebook, so be sure to check that one out if you fancy a chat less about politics and more about everything else! Promo by American Slacker Two episodes back was a two-part gaming chat with Josh & Rhys as guests, talking about some of the games they have loved and some of the issues with today’s gaming industry – one to definitely check out for the videogamers among you! This week’s chat is all over the place in all the right ways – there’s no specific genre or topic; just two dudes having a discussion about this, that & everything, including how apparently great it is to drive barefoot? Dom is the returning guest this week, with a conversation that doesn’t stop bouncing from subject to subject – listing everything would take far too long (and would be dull to read) but a few notable topics were language & the differences between UK-English and American-English, how hard it is for our generation to buy property, the younger generation and the internet days just-before Facebook. As well as the above, men’s outfits, clothing and shoes are discussed in a surprising amount of detail, the differences we found in school between boys & girls (including the term “Tomboy”), pizza, dog names and Dom’s great advice “opening a window is free” – these and more are all discussed this week! Next week Dom is back again, but it’ll be for a more specific discussion about politics, especially discussing Brexit, the left & the right and how we must find balance between them, the “ideal world” and much more!Promo by Suck My Fic Last week was a two-part gaming chat with Josh & Rhys as guests, talking about some of the games they have loved and some of the issues with today’s gaming industry – one to definitely check out for the videogamers among you! Hey Thriving Investors, There comes a time in a person’s life when they are up against the wall, the one thing they have wanted and struggled for seems miles and miles away and they give up. In this interview with Cody Sperber, CEO of The Clever Investor, he shares in detail the real struggle he dealt with and fought against to even start in real estate. Now 13 years later, he is a millionaire and now helps others make sure they do not have to go through what he went struggled through. I love sharing stories like this with The Thriving Investor community because we all need to be reminded that when we change our mindset - it is not easy, it is not natural, and we must find the right people to mentor us and talk to if we are going to actually go to another level. Thursday, April 18, 2013 Dirtbags? Jeremiah 18:1-10 NIV This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord : “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord . “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it. _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ unknown metal item found in Derbyshire near Stanage Edge. unknown metal item found in Derbyshire near Stanage Edge. The first book of the Bible, Genesis, tells us God made man. It says God took a bit of the dirt and made man. Sounds a bit like a potter making a bit of pottery. So Jeremiah's illustration is more reality than analogy. God as our creator has all the creative copyrights reserved. And can not God match us to our purpose and his need. Who are we to talk back to our maker? Before the final firing potter’s clay is able to be reworked, and completely repurposed. So isn't God saying that he's still not finished with us. Here are some thoughts about the implications of God as our maker. God has complete say over our purpose. God has the right to judge our performance in light of his purpose for us. God has no obligation to the one he created. There is no higher law, rule, say or purpose than God's. God is not working for someone, he had made us for himself. No other thing made by God is in a position to judge God's purposes for something he made for himself. Usefulness, beauty, functionality, durability are some of the possible values that God may have for his creation but ultimately it is for God alone to determine. Works in progress before the firing can be remade. God is Sovereign. God is the first and final word over his own creation. We are God's creation. Therefore God is the first and final word over us.
