Send us a textIn this heartfelt solo episode, I, (Sara) am sharing THAT I AM PREGNANT! I'm digging into my personal journey through the early stages of pregnancy, especially the first trimester, a time filled with unexpected challenges and beautiful revelations. This has been the most profoundly spiritual journey of my life, inviting new spiritual awakenings.Join me as I share about the powerful transitions of going from the maiden to the mother, shedding my past identities and stories. I have spent the first trimester experiencing a lot of emotions, a true rollercoaster of feelings, that so many pregnant women face, but often go unspoken. I'm here to vulnerably open up about the first trimester, the depression that can come along, and the incredible need for so much self-love and compassion during this time period.I share some of my favorite quotes from the book I am reading, Nine Golden Months by Heng Ou. This book has been massively supportive in my pregnancy so far. One of my favorite quotes is, “During pregnancy, women are walking a labyrinth of being mortal, becoming immortal, and coming back to mortal” - Haize Hawke. This really represents the spiritual awakening of pregnancy in my eyes. Some of the themes discussed through this spiritual awakening pregnancy episode:The Process of Shedding Past Versions of Ourselves: Understanding the need to let go of old patterns, beliefs, and habits that hold us back to welcome in the new version of ourselves, the mother.Embracing the Present: How living in the moment can facilitate healing and personal growth, allowing us to connect with our true selves.Vulnerability in Change: Sharing my struggles and triumphs as I navigate major life transitions, highlighting the importance of being open to change!Astrological Influences: Reflecting on how cosmic events, such as full moons, have guided my journey and offered insights into my personal growth.Actionable Steps: Providing listeners with practical tools and techniques to help them release their own outdated selves and embrace the journey of self-discovery.Community Support: Encouraging listeners to engage with each other and create a supportive network as we all navigate our individual journeys together. There is such a vital need for strong support systems during pregnancy. I would be honored to connect with you if you feel that you need this support. Send us a text or reach out to us on social media.Whether you're on your own journey into motherhood or seeking connection with others, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on the realities of pregnancy. Despite this, she made the empowering decision to birth at home, simply because, in her words, she felt more at home at home. In this episode, we'll explore Alison's experiences, from her decision-making process to the intimate details of her home water birth, and how she navigated the early days of motherhood with the support of her midwife and doula. In this episode, I share a profound conversation that I had with my amazing mindset coach, where she dropped a bombshell: "Pregnancy is a trauma." This left me truly shaken and I couldn't help but resonate with this statement deeply. In this first year with my second baby, I had to hold back from screaming in agreement. The truth is, for most of us, pregnancy is far from the glowing, joyful experience often portrayed. It's a complex journey, often fraught with pain, fear, and challenges. What's more, it's a journey that carries the weight of systemic and statistical disparities, particularly for women of color. This episode dives headfirst into the unspoken realities of pregnancy and postpartum experiences, highlighting the need for more support and understanding. It's a conversation that's long overdue, and I'm honored to share it with you. So, join me on this emotional rollercoaster as we explore the profound impact of motherhood, worthiness, and the career-focused world we navigate. GEMS DROPPED“I may not be the coach for you. That's not what this is about. But if you don't have a coach, I need you to rectify that… I really do. And not just any coach obviously. I have been blessed to find the kinds of coaches that I have and to sit at their feet, and to learn about myself through them reflecting back to me and from their sage guidance and wisdoms and strategies …just having walked paths that I'm on but they're ahead of me. And it is everything.”“You cannot live in this society, and be thinking about your future, and your goals or your desires, your interests, your curiosities, and money…somewhere in the recesses of your mind…not play some meaningful role especially as women of color, people of color, or people who don't come from a long lineage of money, we have these poverty scenarios, these destitution scenarios that we have to confront because they're operating in the background.”“Pregnancy is a trauma. I know that we see these extreme cases of people who are having really, really horrible, horrible, horrible things. And so you look at that you're like, ‘well, I didn't have that happen to me.' Or you have these women who are just like, ‘I love to be pregnant, the glow is real, I had none of that postpartum depression and anxiety.' You're gonna hear basically, the polar opposite ends of that experience and that's it, but there's a whole swathe of us… the majority of us…in between, have had some kind of experience with pregnancy that can be categorized as trauma”.“You feeling, grounded, rooted, firm, clear and connected to your own worthiness and having an empowered relationship to your ability to create money has everything to do with what you go after in life. And so it's not just, ‘oh, I'm tired, oh, I'm emotional and hormonal,' you have gone through something, you are going through something that is way bigger than I ever really hear in social narratives.”MENTIONSBook:The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother by Heng Ou , Amely Greeven , et al.Book: Ina May's Guide to Childbirth August 7, 2008 by Ina May GaskinBook: Did You Hear About Kitty Karr?: A Novel by Crystal Smith Paul STAY IN TOUCHCome and follow me on Instagram @moniquershields and I would love your feedback so send an&nb
Postpartum is such a significant time of change, adaptation, and bonding. It can also be a stressful, sleepless, and emotional time. I encourage you, if you're pregnant or hope to be, spend some time thinking through what you want the first 8 weeks postpartum to look like. If you're already postpartum, I would also encourage you to prioritize rest moving forward. And if you're beyond postpartum, consider how you might encourage or provide care/meals/rest for a new mom that you know.

Hello beautiful ones! I am so excited to share this month's interview with Heng Ou and Marisa Belger with you. They are the authors of The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother, which was a groundbreaking book for so many new mothers and postpartum professionals. To say I was delighted to be able to connect with these two amazing women is the understatement of the year! Especially as we approach the launch of the 2023 Season of MotherSHIFT and The Village, this conversation is so rich and filled with wisdom for mamas and their support people alike. Here's some of what Heng, Marisa and I talk about in this episode: > What is true now, for both Heng and Marisa, seven years after their bestselling book The First Forty Days was published. We talk about what has changed and how, in some ways, we're only just beginning. > What happens when we take the traditions of the first forty days and insert them into a capitalist, patriarchal, white supremacist culture – and how having the "perfect postpartum" is another myth that many mothers can become trapped in. > How we try to tame the wildness and unpredictability of pregnancy, birth and motherhood, and how to sit in the unknowns we face during these times. > The intuition that new motherhood gives us access to, how "maternal instinct" has been weaponized against mothers, and how listening to your intuition doesn't necessarily mean you'll always get it right. > What happens to mothers' sense of identity and self-worth when they find themselves dramatically slowing down in the first forty days. > How mothers' relationship with food and their bodies shifts and changes over the course of pregnancy, birth, postpartum and matrescence. I loved this interview so much, and Heng and Marisa have an incredible wealth of wisdom to share. I hope you enjoy tuning in!

Welcome to episode 38 of the podcast and the second episode in my mini-series of solo episodes about postpartum. This episode is dedicated to newborn mother and newborn baby needs and expectations. I'll be explaining what new mothers need and what is found across several traditions and cultures that is in common to postpartum care. You'll find out how you can plan your postpartum around those needs and why that can make a great foundation to a postpartum plan. The second part of the episode talks about the baby's biological expectations of life outside the womb in the fourth trimester and helps to normalize typical newborn behavior. I love hearing book recommendations from others, and so many of you have messaged to say that you loved my episode on my top pregnancy and birth books. So in today's episode I share my top five books for Breastfeeding + Postpartum. In all honesty, I would stay away from most of the books on babies/breastfeeding/sleep that you will find in big department stores as these approaches often aren't evidence based or contain techniques that are outdated. As a midwife I can wholeheartedly recommend the following books: The Discontented Little Baby Book by Pam Douglas.Breastfeeding...naturally by Australian Breastfeeding Association. The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother by Amely Greeven, Heng Ou, and Marisa Belger.Raising a Secure Child: How Circle of Security Parenting Can Help You Nurture Your Child's Attachment, Emotional Resilience, and Freedom to Explore by Bert Powell, Glen Cooper, and Kent Hoffman.Keep Sane and Parent On by Sarah PurveyMy Online Hypnobirthing with Hannah Course is now here! We also hear from women's health expert and OBGYN, Dr. Jessica Shepherd, about the hormonal shifts new moms undergo, what to do if you or someone you love is experiencing postpartum depression, and what a future – where babies and mothers get the support they need during this critical time – might look like. Today's home birth story features Jamie Lazzeri, an Ayurvedic Wellness Practitioner, DONA Trained Birth Doula and Holistic Pregnancy Coach. Jamie talks about her obsession with birth before becoming a mother, her doula work and how that all influenced the kind of birth she wanted to have for her and her baby. She also shares a number of great resources that helped her in her journey - including the importance of learning from and sharing birth stories and the benefits of prenatal yoga. Jamie's birth was peaceful and empowering overall. Coming out of the birth, she realized a number of triggers that brought on PPD and activated hidden PTSD, related to past sexual trauma. She realizes that her birth opened up the space to look at the traumas and begin to heal. This is an incredibly courageous and important conversation to have, as many experience this but do not talk about it. From Jamie: “I wish I had heard someone talk about this so I could have gotten the help I needed before going through that for so long and I imagine if I'm able to be on your podcast, there will be birthing people that could benefit from this information and not feel alone.” Things we talk about in this episode: Importance of birth stories Why home birth Prenatal yoga Resources for birth and postpartum planning PPD and PTSD EMDR therapy Links: Resources that Jamie listed: Hypnobirthing Evidence Based Birth Spinning Babies The Birthful Podcast The Informed Pregnancy Podcast Birth Kweens Podcast "The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" by Ina May Gaskin "When Survivors Give Birth" by Penny Simkin and Phyllis Klaus "The Mama Natural Week-By-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth" by Genevieve Howland "Birthing From Within" by Pan England and Rob Horowitz "Breastfeeding Made Simple" by Nancy Mohrbacher and Kathleen Kendall-Tackett "The First Forty Days - The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother" by Heng Ou, Amely Greeven and Marisa Belger "This Isn't What I Expected - Overcoming Postpartum Depression" by Karen Kleiman and Valerie Davis Raskin Jamie's Instagram Doing It At Home book on Amazon DIAH website DIAH Instagram DIAH YouTube DIAH Resources DIAH Merch Give Back to DIAH

This week we chat with Amanda Hill, a pioneer of a new landscape for mothers - a place where they are invited to thrive whilst setting their boundaries and ditching guilt and overwhelm.Amanda is studied in Psychology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Reiki, and Yoga and combines this to provide life coaching, short courses and other pieces of magic. In our interview we chat about what self-care means for Amanda, or Mandy, and how important it is to invest in yourself. Mandy openly shares her journey to home birthing daughter Sophie (who also features on the podcast!) and how she would spend $100,000 to do it again! She describes her nourishing postpartum period that was meticulously planned and explains the creative burst of energy that she felt after this. Our discussion today took us far and wide and left us feeling energised and absolutely empowered. Mandy's perspective felt like a key had been turned in a rusty lock (aka the old birth paradigm) to unleash a dragon! We hope you feel this also… Amanda's Magic can be found on her website www.amandahill.com.au or via instagram www.instagram.com/amanda._hillShow Notes and references:Amanda's short courses that are referenced in this podcast are available online: 'Boundaries are Beautiful', and 'Claiming Sensitivity as a superpower' Amanda recommends the podcast 'Nourishing the Mother' available where all good podcasts can be found. Our bible: The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother. It feels good and respectable to take care of others. When it comes to taking care of ourselves we often feel selfish, spoiled or undeserving when we spend our limited time on ourselves. Well, back up and rethink that. Do not feel guilty taking time for yourself. There is a reason that the airlines tell every person on every flight to “put on your own oxygen mask first, before helping your children or others needing assistance”. Here are some quotes to ponder:1. Self-care is a priority and necessity, not a luxury in the work that we do.2. Self-care means giving the world the Best of you, instead of what is left of you.3. True self-care is not about a life of bath salts and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from.4. You cannot pour from an empty cup.5. Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few seconds, including you!6. Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean “me first” it means “me too”.Choose one of those quotes that really speaks to you and write it down where you can see it as a visual reminder that You Are Worth It.In her book “Famous in Heaven & at Home”, Michelle Myers reinforces this with a simple rule: Our health routine should enhance, not hinder our lives. Taking care of yourself, when done with the correct motives, should best equip you to take care of others.Journal Questions:1. Do you have any areas in your health life that you battle guilt?2. What are some of your excuses or barriers when it comes to nutrition and fitness?3. If someone could grant you an extra hour in your day, how would you spend it?Kelly Brown is a friend who is the owner of Mom Camp, a marketing specialist and certified Birth Doula and Lamaze childbirth educator who is currently in training to be a postpartum Doula. She and her husband also own a small family farm called “French Broad Valley Farms”, where they are raising 150 chickens and ducks along side of their 3 young children.Kelly opens up and talks honestly about the struggles she has faced, allowing us not to feel alone in our own imperfections! Despite her knowledge and expertise as a birthing coach, Kelly was not prepared for what it was like to suffer from Postpartum Depression (PPD) or what is now called Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorder. In retrospect she had a mild case of PPD with her first two children but with the birth of her son she suffered tremendously, in silence. She was ashamed to admit it and afraid no one would trust her as a birth doula if she couldn’t handle the aftermath of her own childbirth. After 10 months she finally looked for help. Since then she has trained to become a postpartum coach to help other mothers in the same situation.Look for a postpartum specialist to guide you during the weeks after you bring home your newborn. She can help you to understand the changes in your body and what to expect (and what not to expect). Proper nutrition after the birth of your child is extremely important for both you and your baby. Your specialist can teach you the appropriate foods for a nursing mother. Use your resources to your advantage. Reach out and accept help from all those people who offer it and share with them the guidelines given to you by your specialist.Resources:The 4th Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your Vitality by Kimberly Ann Johnson.Ms Johnson has studied other cultures that have practices that honor and nurture new mothers helping them to focus only on themselves and their newborn. Sheila and Maria interview birth and postpartum doula, Ana Hernandez, and discuss the importance of caring for and nurturing a mother throughout birth and postpartum. "Childbirth is power in its purest and most natural form. It is wild and uncontrollable and takes us on a journey of surrender. Birth is about so much more than babies being born. It is about a mother finding her inner strength at her most vulnerable and powerful moment, which begins her unique and lifelong journey of mothering that child." - Brianna Z. Kauer, midwife In this episode, Sheila and Maria welcome their first guest, Ana Hernandez, a birth and postpartum doula, to the podcast for an honest conversation about the journey to motherhood and the birthing of a new mother, baby, and family. Ana brings a unique perspective to the power of and importance of postpartum care especially considering the impact it can have on the future of families and society as a whole. Today’s guest, Heng Ou, has had the unique experience of exploring postpartum customs in many different cultures. During her travels to Asia, India, and even in her mother’s home she observed levels of support and community given to new mothers that are not commonly practiced in Western households. In other cultures, family members live with the new mother during the fourth trimester, preparing nourishing meals and offering emotional support for both mother and child. Heng wanted to give other women the same type of care and support so she started a food delivery service for new mothers. The nourishing meals she prepares are designed to heal new mothers from the inside out. Her project has grown into a lifestyle community and she co-authored the inspiring book, The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother. Heng shares the stories of her own births and how much of a difference it made when she was taken care of in the weeks after her birth - resulting in an incredibly quick physical recovery and no postpartum depression in comparison with her other births. Heng speaks from the heart and her personal experience will resonate with every mother. In This Episode: ● Understanding the mental, physical and emotional needs of a new mother ● How support from friends and family is invaluable during postpartum ● Which foods nourish new mothers and aid them in lactation and blood circulation ● How new mothers can be kinder and gentler to themselves ● How new mothers can ask for what they need ● Getting enough human connection during the first forty days after birth ● Finding support and a community Show Notes: MotherBees The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother, by Heng Ou, Amely Greeven, and Marisa Belger Birthing Stone — Baby Sleep Program

Here’s what you’ll learn about in this episode: Kimberly’s own birth and postpartum experience with her 10 year old daughter, particularly how unprepared she was for the postpartum period How the physical trauma she experienced from her birth resulted in years of pain and pelvic floor dysfunction which ultimately led her down a path of seeking out alternative, non-surgical modalities of healing The huge gaps that exist in postpartum care, particularly regarding the lack of training and knowledge that midwives and obstetricians have about treating scar tissues and pelvic floor dysfunction The importance of addressing the mind AND the body to achieve complete postpartum healing The reason Kimberly was driven to write her book and what she’s hoping to accomplish with it A few other helpful books about postpartum healing that Kimberly used in her journey to healing: Click here for Natural Health After Birth: The Complete Guide to Postpartum Welless by Aviva Jill Romm Click here for The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother by Heng Ou Click here for Nurture: A Modern Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, Early Motherhood - and Trusting Yourself and Your Body by Erica Chidi Cohen The 5 universal needs of every postpartum woman and why meeting these needs will heal us on a societal level.
