In this episode, Esther and Helen discuss the animated series Elemental and its exploration of Asian American identity, family expectations, and emotional well-being. Takeaways Cultural expectations can have a significant impact on an individual's sense of self and well-being, particularly in immigrant families. Navigating the pressure to conform to societal and familial expectations can be challenging, but it is essential for personal growth and fulfillment. Setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships and prioritizing one's own needs and desires. Embracing self-acceptance and cultivating a sense of self-identity contribute to emotional well-being and the ability to create the life one wants. Dating outside of one's cultural or social circle can be complex and requires reconciling personal identity with external expectations. Navigating relationships with individuals from different backgrounds can impact mental health and self-perception. Fitting in and belonging to a community is important, but meeting the friends, family, and greater community of a partner from a different culture can be challenging. Curiosity and adaptation are key in building relationships with people from different backgrounds. Unlearning fear and empowering oneself is crucial in embracing change and living one's own truth. It's every parent's worst fear to lose a child. How do you continue to trust God when you're experiencing unrelenting pain? The journey after such a tragic loss is never linear and it can be full of chaotic feelings and opposing emotions. Yet God offers us an invitation to meet Him in the messiness of grief. For Esther Lee, that invitation was often on the cold, dirty hospital bathroom floor where she cried out to the Lord so many times during her daughter, Ava's, cancer journey. And while her grief began there and continues on well after her devastating loss of sweet Ava, she has learned that the Lord graciously allows for the anger, the questions, the fears and the doubts in the messy middle of our suffering. Esther has walked a long road of first being a parent of a child with life-threatening allergies to later receiving a diagnosis that no parent wants to hear as well as the non-stop rollercoaster of doctors and hospital visits. And while her circumstances have felt impossible and her grief has been messy, God has met her in it all. Her story doesn't tie up in a neat, tidy bow when it comes to her pain, but instead, it is honest and authentic, one that allows for the raw emotions she feels while leaving room for the truth of God's goodness and kindness as she grapples her way through every parent's greatest fear. In this moving conversation, Davey sits down with Esther to talk about how vital community can be after experiencing loss, the true wrestlings that can come in regards to God's goodness in our pain, how purpose shows up in small ways instead of big oftentimes, and learning to worship when it feels hard. No matter your story, you will be able to relate to Esther's wrestlings in the messiness of heartbreak and pain and find comfort in knowing that we serve a God who is not alarmed by it when we do.   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teamavabright

Esther Lee is a poet (and letter-press artist!) who, along with her husband and cat Bowie, lives on a 35-foot sailboat called “Hope.” Currently, they’re living off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, where she writes poetry, blogs about her efforts at a zero-waste boat life, and occasionally takes phone calls from podcasters. Spit, her debut collection, received both the Elixir Press Poetry Prize and Pushcart Prize nominations. On today’s episode, Lee reads from her brand-new and beautiful collection of poetry out now from Conduit Books and Ephemera, Sacrificial Metal. These poems offer a meditation through the lens of dance and human movement about the quiet dignities and alienation of illness, caregiving, and living in a racialized body. Part documentary poetics, part mourning diary, part textual choreography, and part nautical-inspired elegy, the poems in Sacrificial Metal, serve as inquiries about how we may become socialized or exiled from a community, along with how movement and dance offer possibilities of interconnectedness with one’s own body and a sense of collective identity.Find out more about Esther Lee and her amazing life’s work:EstherLee.ioWayfindersNow.comIf you’re feeling extra curious, check out more about Rudolf van Laban’s fascinating distillations of dance and movement here.
