This week's episode of “Food Talk with Dani Nierenberg” features two panels from the program moderated by Dani. First, panelists discuss the power and privilege that shape food and agriculture systems, what we can learn from looking back at traditional foodways, and why communities must be engaged in growing their own food. Delivering Adventure

Delivering Adventure

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2024 59:56

What is adventure and how can we deliver it? These are just two of the topics that Mark Sedgwick and Jeff Marks help us to explore as we talk about adventure and the challenge zone. Mark and Jeff are two of the founders of the newly launched Professional Ski Instructors of Canada (PSIC). The PSIC has delivering “the adventure” at the core of its mission. Mark and Jeff walk through what “the adventure” is and how it relates to our challenge zone.Key TakeawaysInteresting new Organization: Promoting the delivery of the entire experience, free of judgment, promoting development, recognizing that delivering these experiences requires a diverse skill set that includes both hard and soft skills.Components of Adventure: Fun, safe, learning were three key components of adventure for the PSIC. To achieve an adventure, it has to be remembered as being enjoyable either in the moment or later, the experience has to fit inside people's risk tolerance, and people generally want to feel like they have improved in some way.The Challenge Zone: Tis the performance zone you are in when you are excited and can perform well, without being overwhelmed or bored. When we go above your challenge zone, we can become stressed, and our survival instincts can kick in. When we go below our challenge zone, we can become complacent and lose interest. The level of adversity we are exposed to determines where we are operating.Adventure Happens in the Challenge Zone: This is where we are stimulated and can try new things without becoming frustrated. To deliver an adventure we need to create an environment here people can operate in their challenge zone.Guest LinksProfessional Ski Instructors of Canada (PSIC): www.psic.proModel of the Challenge Zone: https://deliveringadventure.com/the-adventure-zone/Guest BioMark Sedgwick is a proud product of the ski industry – skiing is his passion, and he is an obsessed student of the sport. During his tenure at Whistler Blackcomb, he was involved in the delivery of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, a successful Initial Public Offering (IPO), leading to the establishment of Whistler Blackcomb as a publicly traded company. This series of achievements culminated in Whistler Blackcomb's significant acquisition by Vail Resorts.Mark's ski education spans three pathways: Austrian, Australian, and Canadian. Plus, Ralph answers some listener questions and questions from the RNRH team.Rev. Dr. Donald Wagner recently retired as the National Program Director of Friends of Sabeel—North America, a nonprofit Christian ecumenical organization seeking justice and peace in the Holy Land through education, advocacy, and nonviolent action. Prior to that position, Rev. Dr. Wagner was a professor of Middle Eastern Studies at North Park University (Chicago) where he also directed the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He has written several books, including Anxious for Armageddon: a Critique of Christian Zionism; Dying in the Land of Promise: Palestine and Palestinian Christianity from Pentecost-2000; Glory to God in the Lowest: Journeys to an Unholy Land.I believe Netanyahu's endgame is to force the Palestinians out, kill as many as possible. and then expel them into Gaza. Avi Dichter, who is a cabinet member, said, “We are rolling out the Gaza Nakba”. [The Nakba was the] 1948-49 ethnic cleansing operation. So it's clear what they're doing, and the Biden administration has rehabilitated a criminal in Netanyahu and enabled all this to happen. Rev. Dr. Donald WagnerOne of the few things that gives me hope after working on this issue for 45 years is the power of the young American Jewish and global Jewish activists. They're not buying the Netanyahu line. They range from being embarrassed to just angry about what Netanyahu, the A.D.L., and A.I.P.A.C have done to Judaism in blending it with Zionism. So these are the prophetic movements that are taking us back to authentic Judaism and the Torah, which is based on justice—tikkun olam [which means] healing of the world. Rev. Dr. Donald WagnerClarence Thomas is really the Donald Trump of the Supreme Court. Ralph NaderI think they are reaching a point—the six-justice majority— of getting a huge backlash… I dont call for impeachment of Justices very easily. But when in case after case these Justices come down on the side of artificial entities called corporations—which are never mentioned in the Constitution— against real human beings—whether they're workers, or victims of different oppressions, or looted consumers… that is a severe ground for collective impeachment proceedings before the U.S. Senate.Ralph Nader Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Us with Dr. Crystallee Crain - Critical Conversations On The Challenges Of Our Time

COLAGE on US with Dr Crystallee Crain Founded in 1990 under the name “Just For Us,” COLAGE (originally Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) began with a group of six young people with lesbian and gay parents. The experience at their first meeting was revolutionary, and they wanted to share similar experiences with other COLAGErs. In 1996, the organization explicitly added work with children of bisexual and transgender parents to its mission, and queerspawn, a term of self-identification lovingly adopted by some members of our community, became widely used. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, COLAGE leadership became increasingly aware of the needs of a new generation of COLAGErs. These were children of the “gayby boom,” whose parents had chosen to form families after coming out – often through adoption or reproductive technology – creating new forms of families with intention. As so many of these youth were people of color, COLAGE adopted a new strategic plan that specifically included an anti-racist, social justice platform. Amidst intensifying debates on marriage equality, LGBTQ+ parents – and their children – were increasingly thrust into the public eye, dramatically increasing awareness of LGBTQ+ families. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, COLAGE expanded programming to meet the needs of these increasingly visible families as COLAGErs supported marriage equality fights state-by-state and in the Supreme Court. Today, COLAGE stands as the only national organization dedicated to the empowerment of youth in LGBTQ+ families, and celebrates thirty years of this work.  Today's Guest Angel Martin (they/them) is the National Program Director at COLAGE. They are a second generation queerspawn with a lesbian mom. Angel started COLAGE programming at the age of 7 and has been an active member of the COLAGE community ever since. When they were in high school, they participated in the Youth Leadership Track as a Facilitator in Training during Family Week. They became a facilitator and, eventually, a coordinator for the Waffles age group.  In 2019, Angel was a Program Intern for Family Week. Angel played an instrumental role in establishing COLAGE's Transformative Justice Committee in 2020. Angel is excited to work towards a world where all queerspawn have community. Previously, Angel lived in Los Angeles where they did social work at a homeless services agency. They now live in Manhattan with their partner and is a singer-songwriter in their free time. On this podcast, I talk to Dr. Dan Costa, who has his doctorate in toxicology and occupational health toxicology and occupational health. He has worked for the Department of Energy in the Brookhaven National Laboratory conducting research on the impact of fossil fuel related air pollutants on the lung and heart. He also served at the Environmental Protection Agency for over 34 years, conducting research on health science to inform critical policy questions. For his last 12 years at the EPA, he was the National Program Director for research on air, climate and energy issues. Today we talk about PM2.5, the history of understanding its impact on health, and the short and long-term standards. To Do: 1- Find out about the short and long term PM2.5 levels where you live. Review the American Lung Association's State of the Air report. 2- Make it a habit to check Airnow.gov to help determine when it is safe for you to exercise. 3- Avoid exercising by busy roads at rush hour- try to commute by bike or walk on less-trafficked paths if you can. Find parks or other “clean air islands” for play and exercise 4- Don't contribute to PM2.5 if you can help it. Avoid burning things in your home, don't burn decorative fires, don't burn garbage or leaves to dispose of them. I guarantee my patients will thank you. 5- Consider a donation to the American Lung Association to support their work for healthy air for everyone. Please Note- due to the omicron surge and heavier clinical burden, I am only releasing one podcast for the month of February. February 14th seemed appropriate, because the best gift you can give yourself and loved ones is a healthy heart by decreasing PM2.5! Nigeria has had varied journey of democratic accountability and federal governance since its transition to a civilian rule in 1999. Most political attention is centered around the presidency and the powerful state governors, while the country's oil wealth generating immense tax revenues make holding political office a lucrative venture. As the Nigerian constitution has been inspired by the US political institutions, comparable issues arise in the two democracies. The single-seat plurality elections favor powerful incumbent parties and facilitates for financial donors to exert influence, while numerous minor parties are barely getting a seat in the National Assembly. At the same time, a new generation of ambitious Nigerians in the federal administration have brought a new dynamic into governance, eager to improve the social contract and make the federation deliver the dividends of democracy. One of them is Myani Bukar, who shares his personal experiences and assessments of political developments in Nigeria, and we discuss how local government politics could be centered around issues, rather than ethnicity or religion and whether a more proportional electoral system could be a solution to improve representation. Myani Bukar is a Lawyer, Development Economist and Policy Researcher with extensive experience in legal research, institutional capacity building and policy analysis. He is a National Program Director of the UK funded PERL-LEAP programme, to promote public sector accountability and previously served as a Special Assistant to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Legal Matters. RUN  We have a great interview to share with you this week. We are faithful followers of the run-walk-run method founded by America’s Coach and Olympian, Jeff Galloway. But we have never talked about all the resources available to implement this training strategy.   We talk with Chris Twiggs, National Program Director of Galloway Training, on this episode. He shared his journey to becoming Program Director with us. Chris also highlights Galloway Training Groups worldwide that you can find and join to get in-person support. When that is not an option, there is an excellent value in Galloway Customized Training with Chris. He creates a 6-month training plan for you and hosts online conversations weekly. Customized Training provides an online platform called Final Surge to see your training, message Chris, and document your progress. Finally, if you want to, you can get coaching from Jeff Galloway himself through E-Coaching. You have direct email access to Jeff in this type of training. Jeff creates your plan and continues to modify it throughout the six months of working with him.   You can find out more about all these training tools and more on www.jeffgalloway.com.   Coach Twiggs, we can’t thank you enough for spending time with the Runcation Nation! Best of luck to you in your Ultra during The Donna Marathon Weekend in February!   EAT Chris talks about his own choices for nutrition before a run and during a run. He has toast before a race. Coach Twiggs is a lucky one who can rely on gels during a race. We also asked him what he likes to celebrate after crossing the finish line, too! For example, a place we have wanted to try at Disney Springs in Orlando called B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Company. In Jacksonville, he talked about a place that so many have recommended to us on more than one occasion, V Pizza. We could destroy some pizza after a race in Jacksonville! He oversees multiple alternative stations; a format which doesn't even exist a number of top ten markets in Canada, and he believes that talent development is about airchecks, and feedback. (We went into large detail in our first episode with him which you can find here) This time around we spoke about the rise of alternative radio in both Edmonton and Calgary, he also summarized the legal case involving Corus v. Harvard revolving around the use of the name Power 107. (The station has since relaunched as Play 107 in Edmonton) We also discussed the new continuous measurement system for diary markets, and what is on the line if the CRTC moves ahead on a review of the radio regs.We also talked about X929's new marketing campaign, which I found out has been adopted across the company. Have a look at the video and see it for yourself. It's clear that the radio is not the only way to enjoy the station. Christian recalls James Cridland's presentation at Canadian Music Week last year, that spurned more than one good idea he took home to Calgary.By the way - our discussion with James Cridland is right here and it's a good one. Hirshberg, MHSA, Executive Director, P2 Collaboration of Western New York; Project Director, Western New York Aligning Forces for Quality(AF4Q), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Carol Beasley, MPPM, Executive Director of Strategic Projects, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Katherine Browne, MBA, MHA, Chief Operating Officer, National Program Director, Aligning Forces for Quality, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation There’s a lot of interest in the Triple Aim in the US, Canada, and several European countries. And it’s no wonder. Ever since IHI conceived of the framework of the simultaneous pursuit of better health, better health care, and lower per capita costs, a whole array of strategies have opened up for health care improvers. Some of the most interesting and groundbreaking strategies have built as much on insights from outside health care as within. And, just imagine if the various communities making headway with the Triple Aim started to think regionally? Well, many are and that’s the evolution this WIHI focuses on, tapping into three related but unique endeavors: IHI’s Triple Aim Initiative (with special focus on recent regional work), the Beacon Community Program (a project of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology), and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q). These three efforts combined have already impacted nearly 200 communities, to the point where many now realize that thinking regionally is the logical next step. Among other things, a regional focus forces an examination of cross-cutting social issues that affect more than a single community — issues such as unemployment, education, transportation, and crime. One community’s solutions to the needs of an aging population, people with chronic conditions, and individuals with complex social problems might benefit the community next door. Further, a regional outlook necessitates building even broader coalitions, drawing on the expertise of health systems operating in multiple locations, state and municipal leaders, public health experts, urban planners, economic developers, and more.   Our guides for the July 26 WIHI are Craig Brammer, Katherine Browne, Carol Beasley, and Shelley Hirschberg. The AF4Q effort alone has some 270 partners and a portfolio of projects, including health information technology, that point to what’s possible when one starts to act regionally as well as locally. We’ll be identifying other emerging regional “movers and shakers” as well.

Listen NowThe use of community health workers (CHW) dates back to the 1800s.  The impetus for these workers today is to provide peer support largely in poor or under-served communities since these communities typically suffer disparities in health care access, in the quality of health care delivery and consequently experience higher morbidity and mortality rates.  The ACA via the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation is supporting CHW demonstration projects, states are testing their use via Medicaid programming and various providers are using CHW to improve self management support among high health care service utilizers.   During this 20 minute conversation, Dr. Fisher discusses the reasons why the use of CHW is increasing, who they are and how they're trained, in what provider setting they work, their level of success, how they're accepted by clinicians and patients and how their services are reimbursed.      Dr. Edwin Fisher is a University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health Professor and serves as Global Director for the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation's Peers for Progress program.  Peers for Progress promotes peer support in health, health care and prevention around the world.  From 2002 to 2009 Dr. Fisher served as National Program Director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Diabetes Initiative.  Dr. Fisher has published widely in prevention, chronic disease management and quality of life addressing asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, smoking and weight management.  He is past-president of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and has served as a board member for the International Society of Behavioral Medicine and the American Lung Association.  He was graduated from the SUNY, Stony Brook with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.       Information on Peers for Progress is at: peersforprogress.org.  This is a public episode.
