A live SXSW panel on how employee complaints illuminate the path to organizational innovation.Wrong question: How can AI revolutionize productivity in my organization?Right question: What do my employees hate most about their jobs? For the Portland Trail Blazers, a winning game plan for AI implementation didn't begin with a tech-first approach — it began with a talk-first one. “The whole concept was to talk about pain points," explains David Long, VP of Digital Innovation, describing the "Lunch and Launch" sessions where employees could openly share frustrations about their daily work. “People really enjoy talking about what they hate about their jobs,” says Christa Stout, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, and as they did, they illuminated opportunities for optimization. “By getting this insight across the whole company, it is already opening our eyes [to how] we can potentially transform the business more broadly,” Stout says.In this special live episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, recorded at SXSW, host Matt Abrahams leads a panel with Long, Stout, and Stanford colleague Jeremy Utley, exploring how "catharsis catalyzes change.” For any team wanting to implement new technology or rethink workflows, these experts reveal how creating space for complaints can catalyze meaningful innovation throughout an organization.Episode Reference Links:Jeremy UtleyDavid LongChrista StoutEp.77 Quick Thinks: AI Has Entered The Chat – A "Conversation" with ChatGPTEp.134 How to Chat with Bots: The Secrets to Getting the Information You Need from AI Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (04:42) - The Business Behind Basketball (06:13) - Why AI and Why Now? Universities have strongly opposed the creation of caps, saying it will hurt their institutions and the broader Australian economy. n this week's episode, Mike and Elizabeth discuss diversity training, specifically an "Anti-Racist Fight Club" pamphlet, forwarded to us anonymously. We go through the materials, click on embedded links, and fact check where appropriate. This is a long episode, but it could have easily been longer still. For example, we focused on aspects presented as objective information, but did not linger over portions that were clearly presented as the author's opinion. We hope this episode may be helpful to listeners who are facing their own workplace DEI seminars. There are hopes the end of the polytech amalgamation can happen smoothly. The Government has halted the plan which would consolidate 16 polytechnics and nine workplace training providers. Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds —herself a former chief executive of the Southern Institute of Technology— says they're looking at having eight to ten providers total. She told Mike Hosking that a key part of the process will be looking after those most affected by any changes. Simmonds says they will need to make sure students are kept safe. We know Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America, but apparently it's causing some major controversy. Is this due to the pandemic, or is it a sign of the virtual age? Plus an update on Fencegate.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or are in a mental health crisis. Host Kim MacDonald talks with Alison Butler a workplace mental health first aid trainer who has trained hundreds of employees in workplaces in Atlantic Canada and across the country. The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that 1 in 5 Canadians experience a mental health problem within a given year and 35% of working Canadians are suffering from burnout. While we often know a lot about physical illness, knowledge and understanding about mental health and substance use problems have not caught up. This lack of understanding leads to fear and negative attitudes towards individuals living with these problems. In this episode we explore the purpose and role of mental health first aid training in the workplace environment and how it can open the door to deeper conversations of change.

Andy Ruffner was born just outside of Cincinnati - and other than leaving town for undergraduate study and a M.A. in Community Counseling from the University of Maryland, Andy spent several of his adult decades back in Cincinnati. He worked in Healthcare, Workplace Training, HIV prevention, most recently as Project Director for the Early Intervention Program at the University of Cincinnati's Department of Emergency Medicine. Andy also taught Sociology, Education and Counseling as an Adjunct Professor at Xavier University, University of Cincinnati and the Art Academy of Cincinnati. And then, in his early 50s, Andy and his now-husband David Weaver left all of this behind to live in a South Florida beach town. Take a moment to check in with your body—yeah, right now! Do you feel tension in your shoulders? A clench in your jaw? A heaviness in your chest? Those feelings have something to tell us—and it's time we tuned into them at work, says Alla Weinberg. Alla Weinberg is a work relationship expert and culture designer who coaches teams and leaders to build relationship intelligence skills, create cultures of safety and trust, and move past toxic work environments. She's also the author of A Culture of Safety: Building Environments Where People Can Think, Collaborate, and Innovate. What needs to change: we have to shift from this mechanistic mindset around work that people are cogs in a machine, or resources, or capital, and understand that we are biological creatures that get sick, that have chemical hormonal changes in our bodies, that have emotions, that are messy, honestly, in a lot of ways we're very messy, and design around that piece. That we have differences in ability in how we think, in how we function and start from that place. Because everything was designed around the idea that people are machines, and we're not.—Alla Weinberg, author, A Culture of SafetyWe talk about:Physical, emotional, and psychological safety at work How our feelings manifest in our bodies, and how recognizing these emotions helps us process them How to create a true "safe space""Stress" as a euphemism for "fear"How the modern workplace was never designed for people who menstruate or get pregnant, and what needs to change to accommodate all bodies at workAlla's personal story of feeling unsafe at work and how the road to healing from trauma led to her finding her life's work Rituals and practices for processing feelings and fostering connectednessPlus: in this week's You've Got This, Sara walks us through how to do a body scan. With Week 1 of the NFL season officially in the books, JOY TAYLOR breaks down her takes on the biggest news coming out of the first batch of games. RUSSEL WILSON gets his due praise, there’s no need for the BUCS to panic, and the NFC East is looking mighty shaky. Strictly “reactions", no “overreactions”! In WIT IT or QUIT IT this week, CAM NEWTON & BILL BELICHICK have a mutually beneficial relationship and snatching chains is unacceptable!! Plus, BAKER MAYFIELD’s got one more season to prove himself. Week 2 vs the BENGALS is looking like a must-win already! HIGH KEY it’s time to dig into the overreactions coming out of week 1 of the NFL, LOW KEY the NFC EAST is a dumpster fire. PLUS, the ROCKETS surprised no-one by getting eliminated in the playoffs, was moving on from D’ANTONI the right move? (The answer’s obvious). This week in the CULTURE REPORT, T and JOY react to the breaking new of CARDI B and OFFSET filing for divorce. Plus, GOOD TIMES is coming to NETFLIX, but in animated form. Thanks Steph Curry! < 28:22 > Research published 30 June 2020 by the Adecco Group, 'Resetting Normal: Defining the new era of work', captures input from 8,000 office-based workers in eight countries. Five trends are emerging. In this episode, I interview highly commended former Royal Australian Air Force Leadership expert, Mark Jones, about these 5 changes to workplace culture: 1. The future of work will be flexible. A hybrid model of a perfect mix of remote and office work will be the norm. 2. Tracking results, not number of hours, as the new way to measure productivity. 3. High-EQ leadership is the new best practice, but leaders need to lift their game in that area. Workers want leaders to display more empathy and support for their mental wellbeing during worklife after the pandemic. Managers will need help knowing these new norms and behaviours. 4. Increased appetite for upskilling in digital skills as well as soft skills and how to manage remote working. 5. Workers surveyed feel it's up to employers to understand there's a shift, and be proactive to drive these changes (not rely on workers to ask for it). MARK JONES, Dip. Assessment and Workplace Training, RAAF Leadership training, NLP Practitioner, former Leadership trainer with the Royal Australian Air Force, is a dynamic Leadership Facilitator (Brisbane) with over 19 years' experience in learning and development. Wherein we sit down with Chris Proulx at Humentum, the global membership association providing training, convening, and support. Working towards social good by helping non-profits and NGO by helping organizations manage compliance and risk, juggling finances, designing programs and helping people perform at their best, Humentum is a long-time supporter of The Learning Futures Group, and we were delighted to sign them up as the official sponsor for this run of episodes. As global director for member engagement and learning at Humentum, Chris is responsible for leading the global convening, learning, and conferences activities for the organization, focused on helping members derive the most value out of their involvement with the group and their engagement with the membership community; previously the CEO of eCornell for ten years, he’s superbly placed to offer informed comment on a range of Workplace Learning issues, including: why he’s based in Ithaca, NY; what he learned trying to create a pro-profit business out of an Ivy League; what it’s like to work in an environment with permanently-constrained budget goals; his work in trying to get a common financial reporting standard for his sector; the central role of Workplace Training in what Humentum’s trying to achieve (at least 50% of focus, from certification creation to course development to a ‘Learning-as-a-Service’ offering); the strange link between really high levels of engagement and really tight Learning circumstances; the importance of ‘use what you have;' why the metaphor of ‘moving’ Training from A to B maybe isn’t really enough any more; and much more.
What do sales clerks have in common with NFL quarterbacks? Apart from a competitive nature, both can benefit from VR training. Former Stanford football player Derek Belch drew on his athletic background and a Master’s in VR to deliver the virtual goods via STRIVR, the startup he co-founded with Stanford professor Jeremy Bailenson. STRIVR started out supplying VR to football teams and has since made a concerted push into the enterprise. The technology has the potential to improve hard and soft skills.
