Chris Pelkey, who was shot in a road rage incident in 2021, was recreated in a video made by his sister to offer forgiveness to his killer. This could mark the start of a new relationship between AI and the law, but will it change the relationship between us and the law? And what are the broader impacts we might see on our culture? I know we talked about it a little bit before, but let's do it again. Idaho, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carol South Dakota, Iowa, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida all have banned abortion at conception or after six weeks. Well, the South Carolina Supreme Court recently upheld that here in South Carolina. Joining us right now is representative John McCravey, who is, very excited about this bill. Representative McCravey, welcome to the program. Hope you're doing well. Thank you, Charlie. Thanks for having me on. So it was I mean, that was good news from the Supreme Court, five to zero, upholding it. Right? It was. And and it was a good common sense opinion. It took them 27 pages to say that if you hear the heartbeat, the baby is protected. So so but but it was a good decision. And, you know, one of the things that the family caucus and I have worked hard on is to make sure we get conservative judges Right. Who don't don't replace their opinion for our constitution and for for law. Is it let me ask you something. I mean, is are there changes that need to be made to the South Carolina constitution about abortion? You know, that's a that's an issue. We we don't have in South Carolina. We do not have, that type of those type of laws that they have in California where they just willy nilly change the constitution. We have to have a two thirds vote of both bodies to even get to that. But we're elected and we're supposed to go down there and do what our people elect us to do. And so that's what we we try to do, you know? And and I wanna say this, Charlie, and I I know, you know, I I I was the author of the heartbeat bill originally, and I I authored a lot of the changes to it that that are in there now. But I wanna say this, the heartbeat bill was never written to be the final bill for South Carolina. The final bill that we wrote for it and represented Magnuson was on the committee, that you had on earlier. He's been a a staunch supporter of life from day one. But but we wrote something called the Human Life Protection Act that is that is still sitting in the house judiciary along with about 10 other good bills. So we've we've got we've got to keep fighting because we're still having 2,000 babies a year aborted for birth control in South Carolina. Right. So it's it's a time to say, okay. This is great, but we can't stop there. We can't we can't allow that many children to be killed in South Carolina. And so we're gonna continue to fight for that. I'm never gonna give up fighting for that. You know that, Charlie. Oh, I absolutely know that. So let me ask you something. What is the difference between the bill we have now and the Human Life Protection Act? The Human Life Protection Act will protect babies in the womb. If if a woman is pregnant, that baby is protected. Mhmm. So it would take it back basically to conception, but but at least it would protect any baby that is in the womb. So now for birth control. Now, you know, the whether the exceptions come in, that's another issue, by a lot of different things. But but we don't want birth control to be applied to living babies. Like the abortion pill. That's right. And and and all other types as well. That's right. That's right. Charlie, they they're sending those things in. That's another whole story I could talk about for an hour. Yeah. But but we have a lot of bad things going on. But but, you know, what I wanna emphasize is let's please get the Human Life Protection Act out of that house judiciary committee along with a lot of other good things that need to come out, like closing the primary is house judiciary. Right. Right choice voting house judiciary. Student privacy act. Keeping men out of girls' locker room. House judiciary. Punishing preventing parents from being punished from affirming their own biological sex with their child. Yeah. House judiciary. Changing the sex on a ...

I pledge allegiance to the flag of The United States Of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Oh, beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties above the fruit of the plain. America. America. America is back. Yes, sir. Welcome back to the program. Alright. Idaho, South Dakota, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina all have something in common. They ban abortion at either conception or after six weeks. Well, the South Carolina Supreme Court has upheld that in the courts. Let's talk with South Carolina state representative Josiah Magnuson, right now. Josiah, welcome to the program. This is a pretty big deal for the Supreme Court. Right? Thank you, Charlie. Yes. Absolutely. This is a big win. And, you know, I think those that were paying attention knew that we had to uphold it. You know, this was so important that we, you know, not go with what planned parenthood was saying. Planned parenthood, you know, I think their arguments were just really illogical, but we have, fortunately, a pretty conservative supreme court, now, and they upheld the state law. And, you know, we're gonna continue to protect unborn babies, beginning about six weeks, you know, when the heartbeat can be detected. Yeah. Now they say, you know, planned parenthood's argument was like, yep. That's not a real that's not really a heartbeat. That's not really a heartbeat. Heart doesn't form until nine weeks is what they were saying. Right? Yeah. So they're trying to say that the law can only take effect once essentially, the the baby's heart is fully formed, which is around nine weeks. But there is cardiac activity Yeah. Beginning around six weeks. And so that was pretty clear that that was the intent of the law. And this is where it's really important that we have good debate and articulate things correctly when we're talking on the floor of the house because it affects what we call legislative intent. Mhmm. And that's what the Supreme Court looked at was the legislative intent. What did the legislature intend to do? It's very clear that the that the legislature intended to prohibit abortion as soon as that cardiac activity can be detected because you can hear the heart, you know, beating even though it's not fully formed. You can hear the heart beating beginning at six weeks. That was what the law, said, and so that was what the Supreme Court upheld. In this article that I'm reading, it says, if the Supreme Court sides with South Carolina, which they did, its decision could pave the way for other registry states to cut Planned Parenthood out of their Medicaid program. Is that the plan? That would be the hope. That's a a court case that's at the federal level right now. Right. But we haven't seen the results yet. I've been proposing, I think, you know, Charlie, you know, to try to take the planned parent funding out of the state budget. Mhmm. And that's been, you know, not, adopted, unfortunately. But McMaster has some executive work that he's been doing an executive action to take, Planned Parenthood out from being a Medicaid provider and just say they're they're they're not counted in that system. And so that's been challenging court. So that's what now is gonna come back from the from the US Supreme Court hopefully pretty soon. Right. We're talking about Josiah Magdiss and South Carolina representatives. So what was the what was the amendment that was put forward? Was it Jordan Pace that that put this forward the other day on the last day of session? So that is something that would have allowed us I'm I'm glad you're bringing this up because that would have allowed us to actually come back and deal with a pro life bill again in the off season. Aretha Franklin got her start at an early age in Gospel music.  As the granddaughter of Gospel great Mahalia Jackson and the daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher, Franklin was heard on her father's "gospel caravan" tours at the age of twelve.  By the time she became an adult in 1960 she had decided that she wanted to go into more pop music, and moved to New York for this purpose.  She signed a deal with Columbia Records, in 1960, but her career would not really take off until moving to Atlantic Records in 1966.  By 1968 she was considered by many to be the most successful singer in the nation, and already crowned the "Queen of Soul."Franklin toured outside the US for the first time in late April 1968 through May 1968.  She performed in Paris on May 7, 1968, and this concert would be released as the live album Aretha in Paris in the fall of 1968.  It was Franklin's second live album, and the first for Atlantic Records where most of her hits were recorded. Some have criticized the backing band as not up to the task of supporting Franklin.  However, this album captures Franklin at the top of her game at a time when she was cranking out some of the biggest hits of her career.  It would be difficult for any supporting band to keep up, particularly one assembled for an overseas tour.  Regardless, this is a great album to explore as a snapshot of Aretha Franklin at the height of success.Lynch brings us a high energy live soul album from the Queen of Soul in her prime for today's podcast. (I Can't Get No) SatisfactionThis Rolling Stones cover is the lead-off track to the album and to the concert.  The Stones had released this song in 1965, and it had become their first number 1 song in the States.  Franklin takes the tempo up for this cover.(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural WomanCarole King and Gerry Goffin wrote this song for Franklin based on an idea from producer Jerry Wexler.  It originally appeared on Franklin's album "Lady Soul", and went to number 8 on the U.S. charts.  It would make history when it hit the UK charts a week after Franklin's death in 2018, 51 years after the single was first released. (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been GoneThe original single for this live song was released on the "Lady Soul" album, and reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This song was written by Franklin and her then-husband Teddy White. The studio version of this song utilized the talents of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who were flown in from Alabama to record in a New York City studio.Chain of FoolsSongwriter Don Covay wrote this song in his youth, and presented it to producer Jerry Wexler as a song for Otis Redding.  Wexler decided to have Franklin record it instead of Redding.  It was a big hit, taking the number 1 slot on the R&B charts for four weeks, number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and delivering Franklin a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy show “Laugh In”This sketch comedy show would capture a lot of American counter-culture of the time from Tiny Tim to "sock it to me!" STAFF PICKS:Ride My See Saw by the Moody BluesWayne kicks off the staff picks with a psychedelic song from the second Moody Blues album, "In Search of the Lost Chord."  The song is about leaving school and finding that the world isn't what you thought it would be.  On the album, the song is preceded by a spoken word introduction called "Departure."Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. RileyRob's staff pick is a storytelling song written by Tom T. Hall about a widow named Mrs. Johnson and her tangle with the PTA.  When her teenage daughter received a note from the Harper Valley PTA criticizing the way she is living, Mrs. Johnson attends the next meeting and reveals some indiscretions of the other PTA members.Light My Fire by Jose FelicianoBruce features an acoustic cover of the Doors hit single with a Latin twist.  Jose Feliciano is best known for the Christmas song "Feliz Navidad," but this Puerto Rican artist also had a hit with this cover that peaked at number 3 on in late summer 1968.  His album "Feliciano!" is a selection of acoustic cover songs, and his most successful one.  He won "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" at the 1969 Grammy Awards for this cover.Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty SpringfieldLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that writers John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins wrote with Aretha Franklin in mind.  When Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler heard it, he thought it would be a good fit for Dusty Springfield who was recording her "Dusty in Memphis" album at the time.  INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:And I Love Her by Jose FelicianoWe double up on the Latin acoustic stylings of Feliciano as this Beatles cover takes us out of this week's podcast.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Isaiah 5:1–12 (Listen) The Vineyard of the Lord Destroyed 5:1   Let me sing for my beloved    my love song concerning his vineyard:  My beloved had a vineyard    on a very fertile hill.2   He dug it and cleared it of stones,    and planted it with choice vines;  he built a watchtower in the midst of it,    and hewed out a wine vat in it;  and he looked for it to yield grapes,    but it yielded wild grapes. 3   And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem    and men of Judah,  judge between me and my vineyard.4   What more was there to do for my vineyard,    that I have not done in it?  When I looked for it to yield grapes,    why did it yield wild grapes? 5   And now I will tell you    what I will do to my vineyard.  I will remove its hedge,    and it shall be devoured;1  I will break down its wall,    and it shall be trampled down.6   I will make it a waste;    it shall not be pruned or hoed,    and briers and thorns shall grow up;  I will also command the clouds    that they rain no rain upon it. 7   For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts    is the house of Israel,  and the men of Judah    are his pleasant planting;  and he looked for justice,    but behold, bloodshed;2  for righteousness,    but behold, an outcry!3 Woe to the Wicked 8   Woe to those who join house to house,    who add field to field,  until there is no more room,    and you are made to dwell alone    in the midst of the land.9   The LORD of hosts has sworn in my hearing:  “Surely many houses shall be desolate,    large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant.10   For ten acres4 of vineyard shall yield but one bath,    and a homer of seed shall yield but an ephah.”5 11   Woe to those who rise early in the morning,    that ...

In August 2022, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall made a guest appearance on a local conservative talk radio show. It was two months after the US Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade, and abortion was now illegal in Alabama. And Marshall addressed rumors that he planned to prosecute anyone helping people get abortions out of state.  “If someone was promoting themselves out as a funder of abortion out of state,” Marshall explained to the host, “then that is potentially criminally actionable for us.” This particular threat launched an epic legal battle with implications for some of the most basic American rights: the right to travel, the right to free speech, the right to give and receive help. This week on Reveal, reporter Nina Martin spends time with abortion rights groups in Alabama, following how they've adapted to one of the nation's strictest anti-abortion policies—and evolved their definition of help. The Southeastern 16 crew reacts to Friday night SEC baseball action, including: Tennessee's Liam Doyle and Vanderbilt's JD Thompson faced off in a premier pitching matchup, but Doyle got the edge in a 3-2 win thanks to huge defensive plays from Hunter Ensley. Auburn swept South Carolina in a doubleheader, including a Game 1 walk-off safety squeeze bunt. Chris Rembert, Eric Guevarra, Cooper McMurray, Bub Terrell and Lucas Steele (twice) all homered for Auburn on Friday, which won despite not getting a usual Sam-Dutton like appearance from its ace. The Tigers are now in prime position to host one weekend, if not two, in the NCAA tournament. Kentucky needs a series win and got off to a great start, beating Kyson Witherspoon and Oklahoma on Friday thanks to great relief from Jackson Nove and a Cole Hage home run. Easton Carmichael homered for Oklahoma. Texas hosts Florida, looking to rebound from its first series loss of the year last weekend. The Gators jumped on Texas early, scoring six runs before the Longhorns got a second out. PIerce Coppola started for Florida while Ruger Riojas was roughed up for Texas. Ole Miss's Hunter Elliott and Mississippi State's Pico Kohn battles in a rivalry series with big implications for both sides. Elliott got the best of Kohn in Game 1 as Jud Utermark, Austin Fawley, Colin Reuter and Ryan Moerman each homered. Georgia and Alabama played a doubleheader a series that could have national-seeding and hosting implications for both sides. The Bulldogs got six home runs, including two from Kolby Branch, in a 19-3 rout in Game 1. Texas A&M looks to take another step towards an NCAA tournament bid in its series with Missouri. From her early years investigating extremist groups, to making Michigan's motor vehicle department a national model for government efficiency, Jocelyn has defied preconceived notions of what is possible in public service. A fearless advocate for Michigan, Jocelyn will bring accountability, people-driven solutions and a progressive vision for Michigan's future to make our state the best place to be a kid, raise a kid, stay, and call home. The daughter of two special education teachers and raised in a working-class family, her parents instilled the values of hard work, opportunity, and serving others. She took those values with her when, as a student at Wellesley College, she was the first college student ever to be elected to the governing body for the town of Wellesley, Massachusetts. After college, Jocelyn went to Alabama to investigate undercover domestic terrorist cells that had emerged following the Oklahoma City bombing, then to the United Kingdom where she studied the international links of modern, white supremacist and neo-Nazi movements, and finally to Detroit, where she continued her commitment of service and civil rights through a clerkship with the Honorable Damon J. Keith.  At 35 she was appointed dean of Wayne State University Law School, making her the youngest woman to lead an accredited law school in American history. As Dean she raised significant funds to ensure all students could pay for their education, lowered costs by freezing tuition and expanding scholarships, and built a team rooted in honesty, integrity, and service of people. As a result Wayne Law became one of the country's leading law schools. When Jocelyn became Secretary of State in 2019, she got to work on day 1 to make life easier for every Michigander. Under her leadership, operations at the Secretary of State's Office drastically improved, and the department went from having some of the longest wait times in the country to a model for state services. She eliminated wait times, created over 150 self-service stations to serve Michiganders in every corner of the state, all while implementing initiatives to make Michigan's elections the most secure and accessible in the nation. And, in the face of threats to both herself and her colleagues, Jocelyn oversaw two of the highest turnout and most transparent elections in the state's history. Jocelyn knows firsthand that the government only works well if it works for the people. Recorded: April 24th 2025, The Boys are back with a loaded episode full of laughs, chaos, and an all-time sit down with Green Bay Packers RB Josh Jacobs. In our intro this week, we are joined by two Michigan students who are interning with the boys for the week. We also are launching our Internship Program so keep an eye out on our socials for more details. The guys also break down Dave Portnoy’s viral video involving his bar, entering the news breaking game with the George Kittle news and True Classic’s Gooner-X of the Month. Josh Jacobs hops on the bus for one of the realest convos we’ve had. He opens up about growing up homeless and his journey from overlooked high school kid to first-round NFL draft pick. Jacobs then gets into what it was like grinding at Alabama while not being “the guy” with a stacked running back room with Najee Harris and Damien Harris. He talks about learning under Nick Saban, his bond with Jalen Hurts, and how his home-state schools never even offered him. We get into his time with the Raiders, playing under Jon Gruden, the painful decision to leave Vegas including a WILD story of a Raiders exec trying to expose him. Josh then gets into the transition to Green Bay and what to expect from the Packers this season. From draft day moments and his first big purchase to Antonio Brown stories and Maxx Crosby’s insane work ethic - this one is full of laughs, truth bombs, and a ton of football talk.
