Jordan Rudek returns to talk about his time with the remastered Mass Effect Trilogy but before we get to that, we have to collectively throw down about Nintendo Switch Online. Is John right that we'd largely just play 15 minutes of whatever notable games get added? Is Neal right that it's like a '90s Blockbuster rental lineup? Is Jordan right that Square Enix needs to figure it out and get the Quintet games up there? Maybe they're all correct, but we'll leave it up to you to decide. We also cover some listener mail about what other Nintendo lost gems we would want to see back (like Famicom Detective Club) and have a little chat about a big Loftwing amiibo. Connectivity has joined Twitter, so be sure to follow @ConnectivityNWR to be up to date on any announcements. Today’s reading is from 3 John 13-14 “I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: "But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name." Take a few moments to meditate on these verses. Now, take some time to think about and answer these questions: 13. Is John finished writing to his audience? No. 14. Why does John not continue his letter? Because they will speak face-to-face. Unless you regularly use a King James translation then you have probably noticed a break at the end of John 7 and beginning of John 8. Usually the text is bracketed with a footnote stating that not all ancient manuscripts contain this passage. The age old question is this: Is John 7:53-8:11 part of John’s gospel? In this message we look at the question of its authenticity and from there we study its message in our usual manner. In the process we discover that the heart of this passage is the gospel.
You bedbugs out there may remember an Australian Julian guest starring on our basketball episode of the podcast. We called him "Big Julian"...for pretty obvious height related reasons. Well this time around we've got the original Australian Julian "Classic Julian" to grace us with his presence. John's thinking about moving out but he's not sure if he's a good roommate. John roomed with Classic Julian which makes him the perfect person to debate the pros and cons (and trust us, there are plenty of both). Is John even a good roommate? Today’s reading is from 1 John 2:7-8 “Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. "Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth." Take a few moments to meditate on these verses. Now, take some time to think about and answer these questions: 7. Is John writing new commandments to the church? No. 8. Why is John writing the old commandments in new way? Darkness has passed and there is a new light (revelation). This has been Three Minute Bible Study: Three minutes, two verses, no trick questions. As he starts this episode in the Gospel of John chapter 1, verse 1, Rabbi Steve Berkson enlightens us with an interesting observation about Messiah Yeshua and the relationship that he has with his Father. This observation flies in the face of any other doctrine that is out there regarding “oneness”, or the “Trinity”, etc. • What role did Messiah Yeshua have in the creation account? • In what way does John 1 parallel Genesis 1? In John chapter 1 we are introduced to another John who would be known as “John the Immerser”, or “John the Baptist.” • Was there a clash between the two ministries, John and Yeshua? • How else was John known to the people–how did they regard him? • What was his role in the entrance of Messiah into the world? In verse 12 it says, “to those believing in His Name”, Rabbi Berkson clarifies the understanding that although the name of Yeshua is important, the message conveyed here is not so much the name as is the “authority” behind the name. Being in the state of “darkness” places one under no authority or under the wrong authority. Being in the state of “light”, one has submitted to the authority of Elohim. In that latter state, one is also given that authority to become the children of Elohim. From John chapter 1 Rabbi Berkson moves us into John chapter 3 so he can expound on the well-know verse 16. The exposition he gives on John 3:16 is not for the average listener, as there seems to be much more meaning in this one verse than most people have understood all their life. • What does it mean to “believe in Him”? Is belief merely mental assent? • Why are the words “should not” and “might” used in this verse? • Is John 3:16 an if/then statement? Moving forward into John 8:12 we see Messiah Yeshua make the declaration that He is the Light of Life. Then he makes the call to discipleship under Him by saying whoever follows Him would possess the Light. Rabbi Berkson gives insight as to what it means to possess something. Going forward in the Gospel of John, Rabbi Berkson stops at chapter 9 where we see the account of Yeshua healing a blind man. His disciples asked Him why and how did this man become blind. Was it something he did, his parents did? Rabbi Berkson cautions all of us to stop looking upon someone else’s condition and guessing why and how they got there. Sometimes it’s just for the purpose of manifesting the works of Elohim. Once again, Rabbi Steve Berkson delves deeper into scripture to uncover even more dimensions of Darkness and Light. Have you ever wondered why Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist? Why would the sinless Son of God be baptized by the one who was baptizing people for the forgiveness of their sins? Is John the Baptist worthy to baptize Jesus? How did he prepare to baptize Jesus?
Download this Podcast Luke 3:15–18—The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them. Things kick off with a check-in on _Watchmen_. Is John feeling more confident about it? There are MacGuffins inside of MacGuffins. John is still enjoying the Apple TV+ shows, and Merlin thinks expectation deflation can really work in your favor. John didn't remember that Jennifer Aniston was in _Office Space_. In a related mini-topic, Merlin wants to talk about _The Mandalorian_ as a way to explore what we like about _Star Wars_. Unsurprisingly, John is avoiding a poster, and Merlin gets schooled on the importance and greatness of _Return of the Jedi_. Thank goodness for our fellow fans who grew up to make new _Star Wars_ for us. John has qualms with Merlin's neologism and doesn't even like when people do that anyway. The summer of 1982 was *wild*. On his way through the Amazon, seven days from even the tiniest village, John ends up getting shipwrecked, circled by a hungry jaguar, harpooning monkeys for dinner, dicing with piranhas, sipping hallucinogenic drugs from a cauldron and encountering a six foot goldfish wearing a hat and sunglasses (this was, unsurprisingly, as a direct result of imbibing what was in the cauldron). John’s stories of the Amazon are legendary and he’s managed to persuade the BBC, who are apparently reluctant to let him die on their watch, to let him return to the Amazon very soon. Yikes. On this episode we cover: What John was doing in the Amazon in the first place In 1992 being very close to getting some kind of international agreements to stop global warming Because of the US that ceased to exist Travelling through the farthest reaches of the westernmost amazon 7 days traveling down the Envira river Harpooning a monkey for dinner Eating monkeys, snakes and caimans What monkey tastes like Hard to eat something like looks like a roasted baby (!) Being ‘burned to buggery’ A sinking boat Things that bite and chew and electrocute Shipwrecked in the middle of nowhere Being circled by a hungry jaguar Being 7 days travel from the nearest tiny settlement Being the first white man seen by the tribe Swapping mirrors and beads with the Ashaninka John necking hallucinogenic drugs from a cauldron A taste ‘worse than bat urine’ Making friends with a six foot goldfish in a hat Is John really returning to the Amazon to bring back the really good drugs…? Going back - is everyone going to be in Manchester United shirts The forest is now under real threat Struggling to get the BBC to agree to his return The BBC worrying he’ll ‘hand in his lunch pail’ (aka die) on the way The BBC being worried that if John dies the Daily Mail will have a field day Growing a beard especially for the trip The problem of seaweed in Mexico and parts of the Caribbean John will still be going on a small boa, up the same river and facing the same dangers John being up for absolutely anything Is there anything John wouldn’t do…? (note he wouldn’t kill anyone but he does have a story about how he once came close to it in Afghanistan)
089 How we use indirect questions Hey there, welcome again to another useful episode of The Art of Business English. Thanks for joining me. Have you ever heard of indirect questions? They may be familiar to you or they may be a complete mystery. Let me give you an example, “I was wondering what time it is.” Do you see what I mean? This is an example of an indirect question in action. You will notice that its structure is similar to, but not the same as a direct question. So, in today's episode, first, I am going to give you a quick overview of direct vs indirect questions. Secondly, how they are formed. Then we will look at some indirect question phrases and finally, I'll explain why they are useful in business situations. Direct Questions Let's start by making the comparison between direct questions. Most of us have no problems with direct questions, in fact, we use them every day. Direct questions are formed using auxiliary verbs, such as “do”, “does” and “did”. Direct questions are also sometimes formed with interrogative pronouns, such as “what”, “when” and “how”. Some examples of direct questions are: “Do you live in Barcelona?” “Did you go to the party last night?” “What time does the party start?” “When did Peter visit you last week?” “How did Peter get to the airport?” So, as you can see, direct questions are the simple everyday question types we use when we are talking to people in English. Obviously, there are many more questions forms and we can form them in many different verb tenses. What are indirect questions used for? Indirect questions on the other hand are used in a less direct way. That is why they are referred to as indirect questions. We use indirect questions when we want to sound a bit more formal, polite and less direct. They are used to make polite requests of people. For example, people we don't know, people in positions of authority or when we are asking favours of people and we want to make that request sound nicer. Remember, when we speak to people in a less direct way it sounds more polite. Therefore, indirect questions are a great way to ask people polite questions. How do you form indirect questions? Now that we have seen the direct vs indirect question comparison, let's take a look at how they are formed. As I mentioned before they are often used to make polite requests of people. Therefore, they require an introductory phrase to form the sentence. If you would like to review our previous episode on making polite requests, then you can check it out here. In episode 66 we covered using conditionals and modal verbs. When we want to sound more polite and less direct in English, we can use conditionals to sound less direct or to form indirect questions we must also use some of the following indirect question phrases: Can/could you tell me…? Would you mind…? Do you know…? Would it be possible…? I was wondering…? Do you have any idea…? Is there any chance you…? So, firstly we need to introduce the question with one of these phrases and then we must use a different word order or structure to finish the request. When I say a different structure, I simply mean that in some cases we don't use auxiliary verbs such as do/does and that verbs such as is/are, change their position in a sentence. Let me demonstrate. The first example is a direct question. “Where is the nearest metro station?” You can see that it is very direct, maybe in Spanish or another language it would sound OK, but with English this is very direct and to the point. The indirect and more polite version would be. “Do you know where the nearest metro station is?” You will notice that with indirect questions with is/are the order changes and the verb (is/are) comes after the main subject, which in this case is metro station. Indirect questions with auxiliary verbs do/does/did Next, it is important to note that indirect questions don't contain auxiliary verbs do/does/did. Look at this example. “How many employees do you have?” The indirect version would be: “I was wondering how many employees you have.” Both these questions are “open” questions because they are using an interrogative pronoun and they cannot be answered with yes or no. You will also notice in the indirect form that we have completely removed the auxiliary verb “do”. This is the most common mistake that I see with English language learners, they will include the auxiliary and make a direct question even when using an indirect question structure. For example: “I was wondering how many employees do you have.” Here, the auxiliary verb should be deleted. Indirect questions with auxiliary verbs have/has/had When we are using Perfect tenses, such as the Present Perfect or Past Perfect, the auxiliary verb appears in both the direct and indirect forms. Let's take a look. The first example is the direct question with the interrogative pronoun why. “Why have you bought another motorbike?” Now the indirect version is: “Could you tell me why you have bought another motorbike?” So, we can see that the auxiliary verb is being used in both forms, however, the sentence word order changes. In direct questions have come before the subject and in indirect questions have comes after the subject. Indirect questions with can and could As is normal with English, we often make requests using the verb can. It is a simple way to make requests. However, we must note that when we transform direct questions with can to indirect questions, we must change the verb can. Take a look at this. “Can you help me with this report?” Now in the indirect form of the verb we would say. “I was wondering if you could help me with this report.” “Do you think you could help me with this report?” From these two examples you can see that we change can to could. Remember, could is less direct and therefore more formal than can. Closed question forms for indirect questions I would like to turn now to look at how we form closed or yes/no indirect questions. Remember closed questions are formed using auxiliary verbs such as do or does and they can only be answered with yes or no. The indirect question form for yes/no questions is similar to reported speech in English. We must use if to help us form indirect questions. Let me show you. “Do you want to come to the Christmas party?” “I was wondering if you want to come to the Christmas party.” “Will you be attending the trade fair next month?” “Could you tell me if you will be attending the trade fair next month?” “Has John been to Barcelona before?” “Do you know if John has been to Barcelona before?” Direct and indirect question comparative Check out the table below for a comparison of direct and indirect questions. Direct Questions Indirect Questions Where is the nearest metro station? Can you tell me where the nearest metro station is? Can you come to the Christmas party? I was wondering if you could come to the Christmas party. Is John coming to the trade show? Do you know if John is coming to the trade show? Where is the toilet? Could you tell me where the toilet is? Could you help me with this report? Is there any chance you could help me with this report? Can you give a company tour next Monday? I was hoping you could give a company tour on Monday. Did you manage to finish the project on time? I was wondering if you managed to finish the project on time. Using indirect questions in business situations Now that you understand how to form indirect questions let's take a quick look at when they can be applied in business situations. Firstly, they are great when you are receiving someone at your company, and you want to make polite requests. For example, “I was wondering if you would like something to drink.” This is much more polite than the direct form, “Do you want something to drink?”. Secondly, they are great when you are away on business traveling. It sounds much better to ask someone on the subway an indirect question than a direct question. For example, “Can you tell me which stop I need to get off at for the natural history museum?” Thirdly, they are great for asking favours of your colleagues, or suppliers. If you want to get things done, then you should be as polite as possible in your requests and as such you will most likely get what you need. For example, “I was wondering, if it is not too much trouble, if you could urgently send me a replacement.” Final thoughts Well, there you have it my friends, an overview of indirect questions and their use in speaking less direct and more polite English. Remember, they are easily confused, and the most common mistake is to include the auxiliary verb do/does or did when speaking. Before I go, don't forget to check out our new AOBE University courses over at the AOBE website, we have a load of new courses for both business and general English. This is Unsolved Mysteries of the World Season One Episode 13, The Stardust RanchMost people in the UFO community are familiar with The Skinwalker Ranch, and what mysterious events have gone on there for years, but close by in the Valley of the Sun in Arizona lies another strange place, another ranch, with incredible stories of alien creatures, paranormal activity, UFOs and one man's attempt to keep his family safe even it means shooting at ET with AK 47s and taking them on with Samurai Swords.Indeed the story of the The Stardust Ranch is absolutely mental. But lets take a look at this location, the people involved, the research conducted and why billionaire and researcher Robert Bigalow (who owns Skinwalker Ranch) took interest in the property.Psychiatric therapist John Edmonds and his wife Joyce, a former FBI employee, saved enough money to buy their dream ranch where they hoped to rescue and raise horses and K9s and in 1996 they purchased the Stardust Ranch in Buckeye, Arizona. The dream ranch would immediately start to prove problematic. The previous owners had left all their belongings inside the house. John reached out to the real estate agent that had sold the house, and was advised that everything would be removed in a few hours. When John returned to the house later that day, all the belongings were at the bottom of the empty pool.John became furious and rang the real estate agent. He was advised the previous owners arrived at the ranch only to find the stuff already inside the empty pool and refused to retrieve it. John would end up discarding everything himself but has always wondered who moved everything into the pool when the main gate was locked and secure. After cleaning up the pool and the yard and moving into the ranch house, John found a stranger approaching, Machete in hand. John, unarmed at the time, and very apprehensive approached the man and asked him what he was doing and to leave the grounds. The man indicated he lived on the ranch. John assumed the man was mentally ill, and in a calm but assertive voice asked the man to leave. The man, hearing that John was the new owner turned and walked away but then stopped and said, “You are going to wish I was here. There are monsters on this property, and I kill them”. John watched the man leave the property and decided to keep an extra watch in case he returned. On several nights both John and Joyce started seeing lights. They believed it was a flashlight and went to investigate only to find these orb like lights zoomed off out of sight, sometimes across the land, other times up into the atmosphere. For several years John and Joyce never mentioned the orbs or the other incidents that occurred at the ranch. They were both credible, intelligent, hard working folks who operated a horse and K9 rescue ranch and did not want the stigma of being witness to paranormal or UFO encounters. They did not need that kind of attention. But things seemed to escalate as several of their rescue horses were found dead, mutilated with their eyes and tongues removed. Researchers have claimed the deaths and mutilations were not consistent with animal or scavenger attacks. And then things got even stranger. Both John and Joyce started seeing beings late at night following sightings of the light orbs. They claim that they see what we typically describe as grey aliens. Small 3 feet tall beings, with large heads and bulging eyes and skinny limbs. John indicates that the alien beings have recently been making more appearances but before that were more discreet making clandestine visits to them while they slept. They seem especially drawn to Joyce, who has been harassed on numerous occasions, during which she is unable to move or scream. They have woken up to puncture like wounds on their skin with blood as if syringes were used on them during the night. Many times they have large bruises in their inner things, abdomen, and chest. There are also occasions that they cannot account for lost time and fear they were abducted. One time John and Joyce were awoken to find that three rescue rottweilers were barking and then attacking one of the alien creatures. The creature retreated and the dogs were called back unharmed, however, just days later they simply dropped dead. When the visits increased and the attacks were getting more invasive, John decided to arm up including purchasing knives, swords, handguns, shotguns and assault rifles. On several occasions he shot at the creatures and kept them at bay. In one hand-to-hand encounter, John took a Samurai Sword and pierced the creature but it seemingly vanished into thin air. According to John a chuck of flesh remained on the sword. John sent this piece of evidence to be tested by scientists. The samples were sent to Michigan to be analyzed by Biophysicist and crop circle researcher W.C. Levengood, who had been collecting samples of the StarDust Ranch's soil. When the research on the tissue and fluid sample were completed, he reached out to John Edmunds and claimed he had discovered the holy grail of alien evidence that linked cattle mutilations that occur across the country. The tissue was pure hemoglobin that is not found on this planet, and only seen at sites where cattle has been mutilated. The evidence seem to also contain what seemed like grass at first, but was actually a plant crossed with animal based substance not seen on earth. Biophysicist W.C. Levengood stopped writing to John Edmunds suddenly which appeared strange because he was very enthusiastic when corresponding with him earlier. Levengood left the research incomplete, as he died in 2013.Then visits by the men in black started to occur. John and Joyce both witnessed men, dressed in black, with unmarked cars observing the ranch. When approached they advised John not to go public with any information he has. When Joyce, a former FBI employee tried to identify the vehicles, they had no markings, no plates, no way of identifying them. The men, also, refused to answer who exactly they were. That's when John decided to tell his story and go public with all the previous encounters and experiences making appearances on Coast to Coast AM and inviting others to the ranch. Joyce, however, has remained silent and indicates she wishes to have no publicity and refuses to do interviews.Project Camelot and those seeking a fantastic paranormal/ UFO type of story visited the ranch and have claimed to have seen the alien beings and recorded them. In one instance they claim to have photographed one of the greys and immediately showed John the preview on the camera to prove to him that there was no Photoshop trickery going on. The image will be available on our Facebook Page. The image, however, shows a very shallow depth of field, meaning the grey was about 2 inches from the lens. It is blurry as well and is the perfect replication of a plastic toy alien. In our opinion, the photographer held up the toy alien and quickly snapped a photo, replacing the toy in his pocket and showing the preview to John who believed that the photographer actually had evidence. This same group also claimed to have found an engraved rock, they said was probably dropped by the aliens. In their youtube interview with John they have disabled comments stifling any skeptical comments or inquiries. Other videos, with disabled comments, are one that reportedly show an alien peeking at John from behind. Where the video is copied and comments allowed, viewers quickly point out a natural explanation for the alien.Other para-celebrities have also visited the ranch including Zak Bagans and the Ghost Adventure crew who claimed that the alien beings were actually demons or a combination of extraterrestrials and demons. Of course, we cannot take anything this program does seriously, as they are not there to research and provide good information, they are there to sensationalize and attract viewers. However, even their fans were screaming bullshit during the airing of this episode.John decided in 2016 to put the ranch on the market seeking 2.5 million dollars, significantly more than what he had paid for it. There was very little interest, however, researcher and billionaire Robert Bigalow, who owns Skinwalker Ranch in Utah decided to investigate the claims and perhaps purchase the property.Due to privacy, the investigation and subsequent purchase deal was not made public, however, it appears as if Robert Bigalow was not interested in purchasing the property. The ranch was then taken off the market, making some speculate that John had fabricated the stories in order to get Bigalow's interest and cash out a millionaire.Recently, the ranch has been put back on the market, however, the price has been doubled to $5 Million. And once again, John said that Bigalow is once again considering making and offer as new evidence has been made available.John has collected photograph and video evidence of the light anomolies and believes that he has captured evidence of portals to another dimension. These photos will be available on our facebook page.Recently, John said he has been branded by the aliens. There was no warning, nothing to see, hear, or communicate with. An excruciating pain and a sense of crushing pressure followed by the indentation in John's leg. Both John and Joyce have experienced skin punctures, triangular depressions in the skin and have seen bruising, and skin disfigurement similar to what one would experience if exposed to radiation followed by nausea, gastrointestinal distress, and chronic fatigue and muscle weakness.Joyce has been reported to be levitating on several occasions and John has handcuffed her to the bed overnight in order to not allow for an abduction. Previously, when she was levitated into a beam of light to board a UFO, John opened fire with an AK 47 and she was promptly brought down. These types of reports are so incredibly unbelievable but John says that all are true. In fact, all his encounters were written down in a self-published book called The Ascension Code co-authored by Ellain J Keller, however, for some reason, none of the Amazon links to purchase the book seem to work. The co-authors other books such as “A MOTHER'S New World Order (NWO) HANDBOOK: How to Survive the Illuminati and Other Dangers, yes you heard me correctly, works. It appears the co-author was hired for about $15,000 to help produce the book and somewhere along the way, something went sour. Both web sites registered in John's name are non-functional. The book web page, however, is hosted at a free site Weebly, and appears abandoned. On July 10th of 2017 a GoFundMe Campaign was launched by Alex Rewerts, a Chicago native to purchase the ranch for $5 Million. It is unclear who Alex is, or why he wants to purchase the ranch or why you should shell over money to help him own a ranch. So far, donations have peaked at $62.John continues to operate the ranch as a rescue business but has been continually harassed by thrill seekers ever since the Ghost Adventure's show aired. Love having visitors plan a trip to Stardust Ranch to check out all the weird stuff that happens on the ranch, but drop in visits are a different story, says John. From this day forth anybody who wishes to "Drop In" unexpectedly will be charged $500.00 per visit! Last night I had an individual sitting out side my front gates from 10:00 PM until at least 11:00! Come on people NOT COOL! also good away to get arrested or worse! We live here! This isn't Alien Disney Land, or Friggin Walmart! We are not open 24 hours a day! Be thoughtful! Even the aliens get pissed off when you act thoughtlessly! So, if you are going to insist on instant gratification you are going to be charged for it! Exception made for Publishers Clearing House if you want to award us like a Gazillion Dollars! You can Drop in Any time! But let's get serious for a moment. What is really going on at Stardust Ranch? Is there an interdenominational portal allowing for some extraordinary events to take place? Is John's story true? Or is it altogether a grand hoax? Or it is a combination? Are others taking John's stories, and adding to them to further their own agendas? There has yet to be a real, truthful, scientific investigation by actual UFO researchers. Yes, para-celebrities and Youtubers have visited, but these have not produced any substantial evidence. They just seem to muddy the waters and cause even more skepticism. As for Stardust Ranch and John's story, it, for now, remains unsolved. Please join us next week when we take a look into the Lost Lemon Mine where you could discover clues on finding one of Canada's lost gold mines. Overview – God Is Love. 1 John 4:7-11. In John’s message today He reminds us for the 6th time so far in this epistle, that the defining trait or characteristic of a truly saved person should be love, for God is love, and everyone who loves, IS born of God. Is John telling us that someone can love their way into the kingdom of God, meaning that they can do the good work of loving others, to earn our salvation? Also, John says that a saved person is known by their love, but what type of love is John talking about? Is John saying that truly saved people ALWAYS have love just pouring out of them? I answer all of these questions and more in today’s sermon titled, God Is Love. May the Lord bless you as you diligently seek Him Pastor Ed
Overview – The Dangerous Love. 1 John 2:15-17. John starts off this small section in the midst of this chapter with some very direct, firm and harsh words to Christians about the love of the world. He opens up with the command to all Christians, “Do Not love the world or the things of the world.” I named this sermon “The Dangerous love”, because John says that if a Christian loves the world or the things of the world, the love of Father God is not in them. Is John saying that Christians can’t love the world in any way? Is John really saying that if a Christian loves anything in the world, then the love of God is not within them? Does this command to not love the world, or the things in the world include not loving their spouse, child, mom, dad, or brother, sister? This sermon covers all of these questions, and more. So come, take a listen to find out the answers. May God bless you as you seek Him Pastor Ed

Welcome! Today’s guest is John Allgaier, the owner of BC Characters, an entertainment company that started as a strolling fair act. If you think “slow and relaxed” defines a strolling act, then you’ve got the wrong idea here. John and his performers use body puppetry in costumes at a frenzied and energetic pace. Let’s find out more from John! What you’ll hear in this episode: To get an idea of John’s characters, think Fraggle Rock meets Captain Caveman, in full-size body costumes. Each costume is made of foam and metal, weighing 30-50 lbs. The fair industry IS John’s source of income. A physically demanding test of endurance Why your performance must be STRONG John’s business started in 1990, with only one costume. (The 12th one is in process now!) Why John has NO regrets “You will always learn more from your mistakes than from your successes.” John looks forward to stepping aside and seeing his “guys” carry on the business. What’s important to be successful in the fair industry? Be flexible to change, adaptable, and understand your customer. The patrons are your #1 boss! There is a power in the costume. Why families trust a character in costume Be aware of interaction and contact with patrons. John’s biggest fear? Keeping his image and his quality of service Balancing family life, marriage, and life on the road John’s biggest mistake? Trying to push and grow too fast and losing quality in the process People have to know about your act and you have to be good enough to be invited back. John’s advice: Listen more than you speak, be flexible, and keep your demands low. Find out more about John: www.bigmouthe.com.
Soteriology 101: Former Calvinistic Professor discusses Doctrines of Salvation
Dr. White addressed Dr. Flowers on his Dividing Line program, and Dr. Flowers admits his errors while defending Dr. Abasciano's Greek arguments. Here is the latest article on the subject: In an earlier post we presented many passages which clearly indicate the ordo salutis (the order of salvation), as expressed by the apostle John when he wrote, “I have written these things (the gospel) so that you may believe and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Spiritual life comes through faith, not the other way around. Since writing that article, Dr. James White has produced a program to address the non-Calvinistic perspective on one verse in particular: 1 John 5:1. I had a renown Greek scholar, Dr. Brian Abasciano, on the podcast to specifically address White’s grammatical arguments, which you can listen to ; however, White expressed a concern on Facebook about not feeling as if his argument was fairly represented. I addressed his concern on that Facebook post and will now seek to cover what I feel is the bigger issue being overlooked. Many of you may be familiar with Dr. Sam Storms — he is a Calvinistic pastor who serves on the Board of Directors of both Desiring God and Bethlehem College & Seminary (with John Piper), and also serves as a member of the Council of The Gospel Coalition. His “tradition” is Calvinistic, yet he objectively observes the exact same thing that Dr. Brian Abasciano and I have observed about the clear intention of the apostle John in this passage. Dr. Storms wrote: John says in 5:1 that whoever is presently believing in Christ has in the past been born or begotten of God. I.e., a present action of believing is evidence of a past experience of begetting. Is John then saying that new birth or regeneration always precedes and causes saving faith in Christ? Although I believe regeneration (new birth) does precede and cause faith, I do not believe that is John’s point here. When one examines these texts where the terminology of regeneration is used, one finds that John is concerned with describing the consequences or fruit of the new birth: Question: “How may I know that regeneration has occurred? How may I know if someone has been born again?” Answer: “That person will not practice sin (3:9; 5:18). That person will practice righteousness (2:29). That person will love the brethren (4:7). That person will believe in Christ (5:1). And that person will overcome the world (5:4).” John’s point is simply that these activities are the evidence of the new birth and hence of salvation. Their absence is the evidence that regeneration has not taken place. He makes this point, not because he wants to demonstrate the cause/effect relationship between regeneration and faith, but because he wants to provide the church with tests by which to discern between true and spurious “believers.”–Dr. Sam Storms (Thanks to Dr. Johnathan Pritchett for sending us this link) I hope this is helpful in better understanding our argument about the “big picture” we believe is being missed by SOME Calvinists who approach this text with the perceived agenda of supporting their belief of pre-faith regeneration. Secondly, I would like to address White’s comments regarding a Traditionalist (like myself) appealing the grammatical work of an Arminian (like Dr. Abasciano). White wrote, “[Flowers] used that as the basis of asking his Arminian scholar (funny how he did not turn to his “Traditionalist” mentors in the SBC), Brian Abasciano, to respond.” Apparently White is under the impression that scholars can only appeal to other scholars if they agree on every point of doctrine? Is every scholar White references in his works a Reformed Baptist scholar? I seriously doubt it. This can be added to a long list of White’s double standards discussed , along with criticizing my use of the word “attack” in reference to his theological arguments, when he has used the same word in reference to my theological arguments. If one were to read my original post on this topic, they would find this article from Dr. David Allen (a notable Traditionalist scholar) in the footnotes: 1 John 5:1 First John 5:1 states: “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God . . .”29 “Whoever believes” is a present tense participle. “Born” is a perfect tense verb. Some Calvinists suggest the perfect tense indicates completed past action with continuing results and draw the conclusion that faith is the result of being born again. The argument is that the verb “born” is in the perfect tense denoting an action that precedes the faith in the participle “whoever believes.” This is an unwarranted and erroneous interpretation. Consider two examples. John 3:18 states: “He who believes is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already. . .” “He who believes” is a present participle. “Not condemned” is a perfect tense verb. Yet, here it is clear that the “believing” precedes “not being condemned.” Consider 1 John 5:10, “he who does not believe God has made Him a liar. . .” “He who does not believe” translates a present participle. “Has made” translates a perfect tense verb. Here again, the perfect tense verb, “making God a liar,” is a result of the present participle, “not believing,” not its cause. Many Calvinists argue that the use of “born” in the perfect tense produces a range of results expressed by present participles, and faith is one of them. However, exegesis always trumps systematic theology. Likewise, context and sentence structure trumps theology. Let’s compare John 3:18 with 1 John 5:1 to see if the use of “born” in the perfect tense produces the result of faith. Notice the order of events in John 3:18 is A then B. In 1 John 5:1 the order is B then A. Both make use of the perfect tense. The same grammatical structure that places being born of God before faith can also be used to describe justification as occurring after faith. See Rom 5:1. The grammar of the verses does not address an ordo salutis. The use of the perfect tense in Greek provides no support for the notion of regeneration preceding faith.30 To suggest otherwise is to fail to distinguish between tense and aspect in Greek verbs and verbals. Furthermore, with respect to 1 John 5:1, contextually the simple initial act of believing is not under consideration by John. John is talking about the ongoing life of faith as a believer. Obviously, the new birth precedes the ongoing life of faith. But that is something altogether different from saying the new birth precedes the initial act of faith. John’s use of “born” nowhere precludes the possibility of faith preceding regeneration. One may argue for regeneration preceding faith, but one cannot argue against faith preceding regeneration. The most that can be said from the Greek present participle and perfect tense verb combination is that the actions are contemporaneous. The broader context of John’s writings indicate he would not teach that regeneration precedes faith and elsewhere teach that faith is a condition for life as he does in John 20:31. This precludes the possibility of regeneration preceding faith. Three conclusions, then, are in order: 1. There is no Biblical text that connects faith and regeneration in a grammatical structure that prescribes an order that supports regeneration preceding faith. Nor is there any statement in Scripture which precludes faith preceding regeneration. 2. There are biblical texts connecting faith and regeneration that support faith preceding regeneration. 3. There are texts that would seem to preclude the possibility of regeneration preceding faith. There is no Scripture anywhere that directly says regeneration precedes faith. That is a theological deduction made by some Calvinists that is driven more by their system than it is by Scripture. The Scripture says things like, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved,” as Paul said to the Philippian jailor in Acts 16. * For this section, I have relied heavily upon the excellent work of Brian Abasciano, “Does Regeneration Precede Faith? The Use of 1 John 5:21 as a Proof Text,” 307–22. Abasciano provides the best and most substantive Greek grammatical analysis of the issue with respect to 1 John 5:21 I have seen anywhere. *A point well-made by Dan Musick in his post on this subject at [link removed]. Musick examines several texts to which Calvinists appeal in an effort to support the notion of regeneration preceding faith. ***Below is a recent update comment on Facebook from Dr. Brain Abasciano to Dr. White regarding a perceived misunderstanding: “James, I have now listened to the relevant part of your show that I had not heard when interviewed. I can see that it changes the specifics of your argument so that you are not now arguing that the tenses themselves demand or particularly suggest that the action of the perfect indicative precedes the action of the present substantival participle (though you seemed to argue along those lines in Potter’s Freedom). Is that right? Can you clarify that for me? Do you agree that the combination of verb tenses in 1 John 5:1 (present participle + perfect indicative) does not itself demand or even suggest the action of the perfect indicative as preceding the action of the present participle? That is really what Leighton was focusing on and I was focusing on. So you and Leighton seem to have talked past one another a bit. However, listening to the rest of your comments, you made some errors regarding Greek grammar/syntax and I still find your argument unpersuasive. Around the 59:43 mark, you said that when we have a present participle with a perfect finite verb, we are able to determine the relationship of the respective actions to one another. But that is not necessarily true, and it does not come from the grammar. There are general tendencies that can be assumed, but in any particular case, context would have to determine the relationship, and often it might not be clear because the author might not have meant to indicate it. Then, around 1:02, you said, presumably of the basic tendency of Greek grammar, that the perfect is either concurrent or antecedent to the present participle. But that is false. As I documented in my Evangelical Quarterly article on 1 John 5:1, the tendency of Greek grammar is for the participle to be concurrent or to precede the action of the indicative. The present participle is especially a candidate for preceding when it is articular, as in 1 John 5:1. Of course, there is no particular tendency for the perfect indicative to precede the present participle. But as I explained in the interview, the rough simultaneity that often obtains can allow for logical order and precedence of one or the other. But that is not indicated by the tenses. They suggest simultaneity and allow for logical order to obtain. In that same section of comments, you gave some odd reasoning for why the participle would not be concurrent in 2:29, reasoning that suggests misunderstanding of how simultaneity works between participles and indicatives. I do not think that practicing righteousness brings about becoming born again. But since that was the example you used, if the participle were antecedent there, it would not mean that every time a righteous act were performed, the person would be born, but that practicing righteousness would lead to the state of being spiritually alive, born again. As for what seems to be your main argument, I believe what I said in the interview addresses that. The comments that have been quoted from Calvinist scholar Sam Storms also address it. Let me add here that your appeal to 2 Pet 1:1 and the Granville Sharp rule is misguided. Identification is the actual meaning conveyed by the Granville Sharp construction. (By the way, while I agree that the construction applies in 2 Peter 1:1, it is not just JW’s that contest it, but some legitimate grammarians. It’s not simply a matter of whether someone is orthodox or not for his opinion on the question of 2 Pet 2:1.) But the grammar/syntax of 1 John 2:29, 4;7, and 5:1 does not itself indicate the order of the actions involved. You know the order in 2:29 and 4:7 mostly from theology. We know that we don’t become born again by practicing righteousness or by loving. But this observation goes along with the fact that the main point of those texts is not to indicate which action causes which, but to give evidences of regeneration/ salvation in the interests of the assurance of salvation, which scholars recognize as one of the main purposes of the epistle (not particularly to indicate what regeneration causes).” – Dr. Abasciano
Is John alone in this perception that the Word, Yeshua, is the Creator of all things, upon whom all things depend for their existence? The answer is clearly, 'No.' John is not alone in this perception of Yeshua.

Is John's gospel more concerned with John the Baptist's movement than the synoptic are? Isn't the temptation narrative most compatible with an adoptionist Christology? What do we know about the Gnostic Cerinthus? Is the scene with the youth who fled naked in Mark derived from Joseph fleeing from Potipher's wife?
1 John 2:2 says that Christ is an advocate for us and that He is not only the propitiation for our sins, but for the sins "of the whole world." What does this mean? Is John suggesting that Christ's death was a sort of universal redemption (He died for all of sin of all mankind), or is the atonement particular in nature? Today, Zach and Cody talk about the doctrine of Limited Atonement, break down 1 John 2:2 and offer some biblical and logical supports for a view of particular redemption. This is a critical doctrine to get right.

Quick Tip for Crowdfunding When you find a tool to help your fund your audience (Patreon, JoyRide, etc) instead of sending those people to their website, use a pretty link and direct them to the page. Why? Because what if a better system comes along? You will have all these past episodes pointing them to a website that no longer is relevant. I lucked out once and I have a link to Audible. Audible change their company that handles their affiliate program so my link changed. By controlling your link, you can simply update what that link points to and your back catalog stays intact. It's from Elsie and Jessica from shepodcasts.com and they are wondering how to handle haters. Here are some things to consider. 1. The Source. Is this person a regular listener? If not, then let them go their way. They are not your target audience. 2. Do they Have a Point? Is what they are criticizing you about have any validity? 3. Can you implement the changes without changing who you are, and the goal of the show. If implementing these changes is very unnatural for you, or if it would change the dynamic of the show, then it may not be in the best interest of the show to put them in place. If you try to act a way that is not you, it makes podcasting a chore. Do the Best You Can Do, and Sleep Well At Night In my job as an instructor I get put into positions that were not made to conduct training. Recently I was asked to teach a class on Excel 2010 where some of my students have had Excel 2007, and some has Excel 2013. Some had mouse skills, some didn't. Some could see, and others could not. I did the best I could. I try to live without regrets, but that can be a tall order. Be Yourself I crack jokes during my class to try and keep it entertaining. I teach a large amount of Microsoft Excel. It's primarily number crunching program. Not exactly the most exciting. So by interweaving stories, jokes, and insights, it gives my students a "brain break" and makes the class go faster. When my niece was growing up she was spooky smart. Why? Because she started learning playing computer games when she was 2. She graduate High School with 1/2 a degree from Kent State University. Why? Because she didn't realize she was learning. She was just having fun while Roger Rabbit taught her how to read on the computer. Consequently, I try to do what I have dubbed "Edutainment." It's educational and it's entertaining (or at least not boring). Someone Won't Like Your Jokes Every now and then I will get a review from my students, and someone will comment that they didn't like something about my style. I'm ok with that, because in every class, in every situation, I try to the best I can with what I have at that time. I can sleep at night. This week on Ask the Podcast Coach's post show, my co-host explained how he had a co-worker explain how they had found podcasts and were listening to Entrepreneur on Fire. Given the Bible's persistent emphasis on the problem of idolatry, why suddenly, in John, are we confronted with the phrase, "Come and see?" This seems especially odd, since the opening verses of John deliberately limit the reader’s purview to the divine word, which begins with the inscription "in the beginning," referring to Genesis. Obviously, Philip is calling Nathaniel to go out and meet Jesus, but why the emphasis on sight? What is John inviting us to "see" when the Bible repeatedly calls us to "hear?" Is John making an about face with respect to idolatry, or is something else going on? Let’s ask John Chrysostom. (Episode 59)
In this latest episode of LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS, Paul, Andy, and Shawn take a look at an attempt to insert a crossover character into the Deep Space Nine show, as the omnipotent being Q arrives at the station to cause mayhem and menace. And get punched in his smug face. But is Q really the cause of all the anomalies plaguing the station, or is it tied to his travelling companion and former Captain Picard snuggle bunny Vash? There's a mystery afoot, but is it all that mysterious...or entertaining at all, for that matter? Is John de Lancie a welcome addition to the DS9 crew, or does his form of meddling not fit in with the direction of the show? All of these questions and more will be answered when you download the show and take some time out...to LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.Feedback for this show can be sent to: listentotheprophets@gmail.comListen to the Prophets is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! In episode 106 of Bum Pooings, while we don't discuss the over-population of Britain's towns, we instead received your tweets explaining what makes you annoyed. Whatever it might be, we decided we'd be angry too. Whether a listener should join the army distracts us slightly, and then Nick breaks his own rule and starts going on about games as usual. Then we do get cross about the data retention directive, the use of "gay" as a pejorative (although we do end up banning the word entirely), bad service, and then distract ourselves with suspensions and expulsions from school. Learn that John can pick up heavy things, and then we get back to being enraged, this time about plug sockets. Is John an insane homophobic bigot when it comes to marriage? Then Nick tries to get John even further in trouble. And then it ends.
In episode 74 of Rum Doings we don't discuss whether celebrity is good for democracy. But we do drink gingerbread cream liqueur. It's also the third and final episode containing Judge Martin Coxcombe, who will finally rule on whether John Walker is allowed. Thoughts appear on stag dos, and then there's a splendid foray into making up facts. Something Nick doesn't quite get. We get all serious about anti-Semitism, less so about night terrors, riddles, and video toasters. Is John a bear? Does his Gay Day contribute to that? Are brown eyed people normal? And how does Judge Coxcombe finally rule on John?
John booted a man up the arse, Jonny reminds him of far less brave childhood times. Is John still a purple belt? The boys are at loggerheads, no change there...ish. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/15-minutesish-of-blame/donations
