Welcome back to the Daily Gratitude Minute. This is Scott Colby from Say It With Gratitude. I recently finished a book called the Mr Thank You Project by John Israel. I've mentioned this book a couple times before and it details John's journey of writing five thank you cards a day for an entire year, and I'm blown away that he was so consistent and completed his mission. And as you could imagine, it sometimes became difficult to think about who he should write the cards to. You know, that's a lot of cards, over a thousand cards to write. So he ended up starting to write some cards to some people he didn't know. And I want to share with you a great example. So John went to. Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and I'm actually in Spokane right now. I just gave a keynote presentation this morning, so this reminded me of his story. John's a big Gonzaga basketball fan, and in 2017 they lost in the NCAA tournament in the finals. And as you can imagine, John and all Gonzaga fans were completely sad and depressed about the final result. So he said the game ended at about 9:00 PM and he still had his five cards to write for that day. But the last thing he wanted to do, especially because he was feeling so low in the moment, was to write these cards. Well, as John was trying to figure out who to write the cards. , he suddenly had an idea. You see, he thought about the Gonzaga basketball team that year, and yes, they did lose the championship game, but they also went further in the tournament than any other previous time. This was the furthest they had gone in the tournament. . And so in reality, it was a time for celebration, so John flipped his attitude and said, what if we celebrate the year that they had, forget about being depressed, that they lost a championship game? Let's celebrate and give thanks. To going further than any other Gonzaga team had in history. So he, he ended up writing a thank you note to every single player on the team. He looked up their statistics, what were their best games, and he recalled those best games in his card. He wrote to the coaches and he said, Flipping that attitude changed his mood 180 degrees from one of being sad and depressed and down because of that heartbreaking defeat to now one of joy and celebration on what an incredible season the Gonzaga basketball players had given John and all the other fans. So, great message on how you can take something negative and just by changing your. Looking for the good. Turn it, turning it in into something positive. I'm Scott Colby with Say It With Gratitude, and this has been the Daily Gratitude minute. Cheers.
Welcome back to the daily gratitude minute. This is Scott Colby with say it with gratitude. Last week. I'm one of the episodes. I talked about a book that I was reading. I just started it. It's called the Mr. Thank you project. And it's about John Israel who had a goal to write five. Thank you cards a day for one year, 365 straight days, which is incredible. What a mission. And one of the first groups of people that he wrote to, he was on an airplane and decided to write to the pilots. And he got to thinking like, Hey, what, what should I say in the card? What am I grateful for? And. He thought a little harder. And then he thought about like how these pilots. When they're flying across the country, like most weeks out of the year, they're away from their family. But what they're doing is they're oftentimes helping the passengers. See their families. And when John thought about this, gosh, gosh, it's helping so many people, you know, spend holidays with their families or other events with their families. While they're away from their families. What a noble thing to do in this world? What a noble profession. As well. You know, when flights are delayed or canceled, sometimes the pilots. They face the brunt of a passenger's frustration. So that's other things to be grateful for. So when you really think about what pilots go through and the, uh, dedication to their work. We have a lot to be grateful to pilot. So John wrote a, I think on this particular flight. You know, there's pilot and copilot, and he had a second leg of his flight. So he wrote to four pilots on one day. And I think he asked like one of the pilots who had been. A pilot for, I think 22 years. If he had ever gotten a thank you card before and in 22 years of being a pilot that pilot never had. So an incredible mission. Uh, that pilots do John express gratitude towards them. And, uh, yeah, I can't wait to finish his book. I'll bring you more episodes. Of the daily gratitude minute that cover other lessons learned from the book. Mr. Thank you. I'm Scott Colby with say it with gratitude. And this has been the daily gratitude minute. Cheers.
Welcome back to the Daily Gratitude Minute. My name is Scott Colby from Say with Gratitude. I just started reading a book called Mr. Thank You, by John Israel. I've known John for a few years. Mainly online, I guess only online. We've chatted, we've done a Zoom call together. Uh, but he wrote this book a few years ago and I'm surprised that I'm just now reading it. But it tells of his journey and lessons learned from. Writing five handwritten notes. So he wrote five thank you cards every day for a year. Now, that's incredible to me because I sometimes give myself a challenge of writing one thank you card a day for 30 days, and I struggle. So I'm interested in knowing how he did it and how he kept himself accountable and going. I know one of the things he did, cuz I'm still at the beginning of the book, but he outlined some rules up front that he must follow and I wanted to share four rules with you. Number one, all notes about must be handwritten so he can't copy and paste an email and send it out to a bunch of people. These need to be handwritten notes. Number two, every day, five cards must be written and every morning starts at zero. So in other words, he can't save. For the entire week, let's say on Sunday and write 35 cards, he needs to write five notes every single day. Rule three, a maximum of three cards count per individual. So in other words, he can't write 365 cards to his wife. He could only write to his wife or any one individual three times throughout the year. So he has to come up with a lot of different people to write notes to. And number four, this is really interest. if he writes less than five thank you cards in a day, he needs to donate $1,000 to charity. So imagine such a big kind of penalty, kind of, I mean, you're donating to charity, but it is a penalty in that it's a thousand bucks out of your pocket any day he forgets to write or doesn't write five handwritten notes that's gonna keep him accountable. When he first put together rule four, he was going to donate a hundred dollars to. If he wrote less than five notes in a day, and his business coach at the time said, I don't think that's a big enough penalty. And he asked him, Would you have donated a hundred, 200 or 200 bucks to charity anyway this year? And John said, Yes. He said, We need to make that rule even more strict. And they came up with donating a thousand dollars to charity for any day that. misses his five thank you notes. Incredibly powerful tool to keep yourself accountable. So I'm just at the beginning stages of this book. I can't wait to dig into it. It's again, it's Mr. Thank You by John Israel. I'll do another gratitude minute, um, once I finish the book and share with you my big takeaways. If you've read it, would love to hear from you. You can always send me a DM on Instagram over at Scott Colby dot. I'm Scott Colby with Sat With Gratitude and this has been your daily gratitude minute. Cheers.

As business owners, we sometimes forget how important it is to say thank you. So it may be to our clients, employees, and even our loved ones. John Israel realized the power of the words “thank you” early in his career. It began with a pivotal point in his life where significant changes were happening, and he came across Simon Sinek's Start With Why. People don't care what you do. They care about why you do it, and people don't care about what you're selling. They care about why you're selling it, so if you want to be successful, start with the why. Those sentences made a profound impact on John, thus started the Mr. Thank you project. ------- If you want to find out for yourself how MyOutDesk could help you, hit the link below. Thanks for tuning in and welcome back to the Catapulting Commissions podcast with your host, Anthony Garcia. On today's episode, Anthony is sitting down with his guest, John Israel. He's the founder and Chief Gratitude Officer of Mr. Thank You, a consulting firm focused on client and employee retention. John is one of the most sought after speakers and trainers who teaches companies big and small how to become irreplaceable by creating thriving relationships both inside and outside the organization. His work has been featured on ABC News, Fox News, and Good Morning America. In October 2016, John's love of people lead him to start a social experiment that became a book and TEDx talk and then eventually the Mr. Thank You project. The Mr. Thank You Project started when John was selling Cutco knives as a young man. He had built a relationship with a customer who eventually ended up canceling her order. Naturally, John was impacted by this, but not in the way he thought. It wasn't the lost sale that he was upset about, but the relationship itself. After a conversation with his mom, he decided to write a letter of gratitude to that customer. The thing about gratitude, John says, is that it's a reflective state. You have to pause and think about the experience and ask “what is good about this?” A few years later, that same customer called back asking to place an order larger than any in John's career. Suddenly, it was clear. People want to feel like a person, not a customer. This experience kickstarted the Mr. Thank You Project, which began as a commitment to handwrite 5 thank you cards every day for a year. When he speaks to companies about loyalty, he speaks to them about gratitude. Today, he gives keynote presentations that inform companies on how they can become irreplaceable. As our society moves further and further into automation, it's hard to compete. In fact, there are many jobs that have as high as 98% likelihood of being automated in the next 20 years. The question John looks to answer is what is that 2%? It's the human aspect that cannot be imitated. There are three aspects that allow people to stay relevant: Advocacy, persuasion, and influence. A robot simply CAN'T fight for you. People can. Empathy is a very human interaction. Coaching and leadership. People leading people is something that can't be replaced. Education and expertise. When you're working with a person, there is a fear of making a mistake. A person who has been through the same experience offers comfort. Next, John talks about how to apply it. It starts with getting connected. Think about interpersonal, everyday relationships. What goes into a relevant relationship? There are three questions you want to know the answers to. What do they value? What are their goals? Where does it hurt? By keeping these in mind, you stay irreplaceable. Until then, you become a commodity. John talks about how to apply all of this, how to acknowledge difficult times, and how we can be better, irreplaceable sales leaders. What You'll Learn On today's show, John Israel fills us in on what it means to be truly grateful and how we can use gratitude to create meaningful, genuine relationships that last (and pay off). What is a Solarpreneur you might ask a Solarpreneur is a new breed of solar pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.Speaker 2 (00:42):What's up. So we're preneurs. Welcome to another episode and I'll be honest. This is the second time I am recording this episode right now. I had some fire money content that I was spitting, and I don't know what happened cause they didn't press record, but I go and replay the recording and dead silence crickets. So I'm back for another one. So hopefully it's even better than the first time I recorded it. Um, but I am currently in lake Powell, Utah right now. So just to preface this, if you heard some waves hitting the shorter that's, what's going on standing on top of the top of a houseboat right now, recording some content for my solar preneur peeps. So I'm dedicated. I want to show you guys that I am committed to helping you improve your lives as solar cells, professionals. So let's jump into it this episode today.Speaker 2 (01:37):I want to talk about gratitude. We've talked, had a lot of guests on that have talked about the importance of gratitude. Earl capuli was one probably about a month ago. He is known as Mr. Gratitude. So go listen to his, if you haven't already. But the reason I'm thinking so much about this is because I went to a conference a couple of weeks ago in Dallas, Texas. Um, you guys probably heard me talk about it was the knock star conference, Danny PESI Tanner McCarthy that had been on the show. They run the knock star movement. They did an awesome event to definitely check out, going to their next one. Bat this event, they brought a guest. His name is John Israel. And if you haven't heard of him, he is known as Mr. Thank you a little bit different than Mr. Gratitude, but Mr. Thank you.Speaker 2 (02:24):And what he did was he wrote, uh, um, five, thank you cards a day for 365 day streets every day. And it took him about an hour and a half a day on average to write these cards. So these weren't just little, you know, little notes. These were full-blown thought out, thank you cards. And he couldn't write them, write them to more than three people. Hey, so we're cutting. Just keep writing. Thank you cards to his wife. He could only do a max limit of three per person throughout the course of a year. Pretty incredible what he did. So he wrote a book on it. He's spoken to all types of, and he's really created a movement and change people's lives in the process. So super inspiring dude. And the reason I got thinking about him so much is because I am on this boat, reading his book, it's called the Mr.Speaker 2 (03:17):Thank you project. And then the book, he just documents the journey, what he did and talks about it. And so the reason I'm thinking about it so much, because I hadn't experienced actually, before I left on this little trip that went hand in hand with some of the things he talks about. So I'll get that, get to that in a second. And actually I shared this experience on Instagram. So if you're not falling already go shoot me a fall at Taylor J Armstrong. And I shared kind of a crazy story that happens, got some feedback from some listeners here, but there isn't that remind to me is Mr. Thank you. He talks about this thing called the gratitude loop. And what happened was he was at an event eight years ago and he speaking at it after he gets done speaking, one of the ladies at the event comes up and says, Hey John, I appreciate your message.Speaker 2 (04:09):This is exactly what I came to the conference to learn. He tells him, thank you. And his response was, yeah, well I missed a couple of big parts that were really important to the whole message. I was running short on time. I'm sorry about that could have been. So he basically shot down the appreciation that this lady showed and the lady's like, okay, well, I thought it was great. Then she turned and walked away. And has he went on to think about this? He's like, what was I doing? Did I just respond to someone's? Thank you with an apology. What is wrong with me? Hey, and so I got thinking about this. How many times do we do this? It sells people. How many times do we do this in our lives? Where someone is trained to give us thanks. We shut it down. We say, no, it's nothing.Speaker 2 (05:01):We got to change these things. And I've done it time after time. Even a lot of our listeners here, you all shot me messages like, Hey Taylor, thanks for the podcast. Thanks for what you shared today. That's exactly what I needed. This helped me close the deal, things like that. And I want to apologize to those that I have shot down that things at times. Cause I know for sure I've responded with people out is nothing. Uh, yeah, well that episode wasn't that good, but glad you got something from it. I've sent out messages like that and response. So this was kind of a slap in the face to me as I was reading. This is, and that's this point with it is we need to accept compliments and reflect gratitude. Okay. So was point is if someone takes the time to give you a gift, pay you a compliment or acknowledge the great work you do.Speaker 2 (05:52):Pause, soak it in and say, thank you for your welcome there's to be said for being humble. And there's another thing to be said for allowing others to contribute to your life. It's not as much about horrifying you as it is honoring the vulnerability in generosity of another person, bold enough to take the time to appreciate you. So it's, you're someone that struggles accepting. Thanks from other people. Let that be a lesson to you. We all need to practice this thing. He calls it the gratitude loop. What it is is when you open a gratitude loop, that's you expressing gratitude saying thank you. And if that loop is left open, how do you feel? He gives an example. If you went up to a crowd that says, Hey, thank you for, I don't know. Thank you for being my friends today. They just stare at you say nothing.Speaker 2 (06:45):What's that's going to feel like it's going to feel awkward. I'm going to feel weird. You go say thank you to the crowd. They do nothing don't even acknowledge. It feels like a slap in the face, right? It's an uncomfortable, it's weird. Almost seems offensive. So that's his point with the gratitude loop is when we go around, we say, you're welcome. That's closing the loop, right? So don't leave God two loops open. And then the second piece that I learned from his book, as I'm reading here is give up the need to be appreciated for your generosity. Hey, and the story that goes along with this, the reason I'm thinking about so much about this right now is because on my Instagram, I actually talked a little bit about what happened, but the experience was is that before I left on this little trip, I'm on, I made it a personal goal.Speaker 2 (07:41):I said, okay, I want to close three deals before I leave. I got Monday and Tuesday of all is all this week. I want to close three deals can be pretty good. Right? Two days of work in closed three deals. And the reason I set the goal too, is because I knew I had, I had a handful of solid appointments set up, given my I'd given myself a good shot to actually attain the goal. Okay. And so I go out some of this neighborhood they're condos and here in California, the good news is with condos. Townhomes, H ways can't restrict homeowners from putting solar up there. They can make it super difficult, but they can't restrict it. So I use this to my advantage. This area didn't have any solar yet. So I said, okay, I'm going to go off. I'm going to cause everyone in the neighborhood, they don't even know they can have solar.Speaker 2 (08:33):First thing I do, I talked to the HOA president. Okay. And I'll make this a short story since I already chaired the majority of it on my Instagram. But I, um, talked to her actually at several appointments, but then she canceled the appointment because of some confusion. She thought it was like a government program or she was getting free software. It wasn't. So she said, okay, yeah, you lied to me. I'm not going to meet with you. Canceled the appointment. My Mike, okay. I got three other appointments set up. No problem. I'm still gonna close some deals. These people are stoked. They're like no way. Yeah. We want to go solar. We didn't even know we could have Sawyer go to them as I'm about to close the first one on the week, the guy says, okay, Taylor, whoa, this sounds awesome. But you know what?Speaker 2 (09:21):Let us talk real quick to the HOA president. Just because I don't know, we don't want to be the first ones. The neighbors are doing this and we want to make sure it's all good. So what happened? They go and talk this HOA president and she just slams the door on him. She says this kid, he lied to our community. He told me it was a free government program. This isn't it. She just completely shuts them down, talks them out of the cell. And I lose a cell. And then the other ones cancel appointments, turns into a disaster. So it went from being this golden area. I was going to close all these deals there. Now this HOA president just completely, it throws a wrench in my plans and just ends my hopes hitting my goal on the week. So I was devastated. I come up with this plan.Speaker 2 (10:10):I said, okay, this area, there's guaranteed. There's going to be deals. And I can even probably go back and close these deals that they had. I just need to get back in the good graces of this HOA president. Okay. So her name's Carol. I go, I come up with this idea. I say, I'm going to go give Carol I thank you card. And to be like Mr. Greg, Mr. Thank you like John is, you'll give her a thank you note and even better. I'm going to give her a box of cookies to go with it. That's something we do for our customers. We send them little gifts, cookies, um, treats stuff to kind of stand out, help them remember us. Let's say how many she didn't buy it, but I'm going to send her some cookies. So I go, I pick up these cookies, um, box of four cookies from a dirty dough here in California.Speaker 2 (10:57):That's a Bennett Maxwell has company. They make some giant cookies that have all these crazy flavors. She's a single lady. I'm going to give her a box of 40, these giant cookies and a thank you card. So I go right to thank you card dropping on the porch. And then I'm just like, okay, she gets home at five. I'm going to get a thank you wife. I'm going to get a text from her, a call saying, Hey Taylor, I'm so sorry. You're the best? Come close my whole neighborhood on solar. So I'm waiting. I'm waiting. I'm working. I'll look at my clock at five. Dave, no texts, no calls Mike. Okay. Maybe she was running late. I wait, wait, wait. Six o'clock comes. Nothing. No texts. Seven o'clock eight o'clock nine o'clock 10. O'clock no calls, no texts, nothing. I'm like, what is going on? The Carolyn, I get this. Hey. And actually deliver it to another neighbor is the one that I had almost closed, but that's, you know, camp blow to them. Got a thank you. Text from them. So I'm like, okay. I know, I know they got him. What's going on? I wait two more days, Mr. Courtney. It's been about a week now. And guess what? Still? No, thank you. Texts. No acknowledgements. Absolutely.Speaker 2 (12:17):A N S yeah, it was, it was a little sad. I was hoping I'd get something, but I didn't. And that's the reality of it. They actually used to write, thank you cards to my customers. But this experience with Carol reminded me of why he got discouraged writing. Thank you cards because sometimes I would write dozens and dozens of thank you. Cards, get nothing in return. People wouldn't even acknowledge it. And I did get results from it. I did get an extra referral here and there. People remember him, but it was the scourging that sometimes people wouldn't say anything. So John's point with this is we need to give up the need to be appreciated for generosity. How many times have we given something then been discouraged when people don't say thank you. So John's point is now this may sound counterintuitive after explaining the whole gratitude loop.Speaker 2 (13:11):Yes. When people don't reflect back that they received or valued our gifts, compliments or acknowledgements, and the natural reaction is that something is missing. The loop feels open. True gratitude is, is expressed with nothing expected in return. When you feel the frustration that someone didn't appreciate what you did for them, just remember, you never know what other people are going through in their lives, except that you did a good thing, pat yourself on the back and move on. Hey, so this is reminding me. I go like, okay, well, I sent this good thing to Carol thought. I was going to change, change my success in the area, but it didn't. And that's okay. So I'm trying to be okay with that. Hey, and John goes on to talk about how, when he was on day, I think 50 of sending out all these thank you cards.Speaker 2 (13:59):He got really discouraged because after 220, thank you cards. Only 20 people responded to thank him for the cards or even acknowledged acknowledged that they got it. And he ended up talking to, um, one of his friends later they'd send a hardtail and they said, John, I got your card a few months back. But the reason I didn't even say thank you or respond to it is because I was going through so much pain in my life. I was going through a really tough breakup. I just couldn't be present to anything positive in my life. So thank you now. But that's why I couldn't. I just was in just, was in some pretty heavy stuff to be able to respond. So think about that next time. You're expressing gratitude, trying to say, thank you. Don't expect anything in return in return. Okay. Be happy with what people respond, whether they respond or don't respond in the challenges.Speaker 2 (15:04):First solar preneurs, go out and write. Thank you cards to your customers, right? Thank you. Cards to your managers. Write, thank you cards to those that have helped you get to this point of success in your sales career. Okay? And that's how we're going to change the industry. How many, how many sales people are out there? They're just focusing on the money. Don't care about their clients. This is how we show that we care about our clients. And guess what the side effect is going to be. You are going to get more referrals. You are going to get those people that send cards back. They express appreciation. Hey, but if you don't, it's not the end of the world. How about after you send a hundred? Thank you cards. You don't get one extra referral. You don't get one person saying thanks for the card back.Speaker 2 (15:49):Can you live with that? So that's the challenge. I'm going to get John Israel on the podcast. Soon. He's lined up. Um, we're waiting for him to lock down the time with him. So if you know, John Israel go out and shoot him a message say, Hey man, we need you on the solar prenuer podcast. Yeah, we're going to get them on. But in the meantime, he was actually on Sam Tagard store or podcast. You can go listen to his experience there. Do you want to search that episode? Hey, but let's elevate ourselves to that mindset of gratitude. That's how we're going to change this industry. And that's how we're going to really have a better attitude ourselves to go out and close more deals and be grateful for the things that are happening, happening to us. Even in times like this, when you're getting shut down by each way, presence.Speaker 2 (16:37):And when deals are canceling, when everything seems like it's going to crap, these are how these are. That's how you're going to get through these tough times is expressing your gratitude and elevating your level of gratefulness to something like John Israel. Okay. So I hope you enjoyed the episode and send it to someone who's going through a tough time. Go and write a thank you card today. Let me know your experience with it. And yeah, I hope this turned out better than the first time again, second time recording it, but appreciate our listeners. And I'm grateful for all you listening to the show and sharing this content in implementing the strategy we talk about. So go out and close some deals and we'll see you on the next one.Speaker 3 (17:22):Hey Solarpreneurs. Quick question. Horseman's Corner with Howard Hale
Tune in now and don't forget to sign up for www.solciety.co!Speaker 1 (00:03):Welcome to the Solarpreneur podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level. My name is Taylor Armstrong and went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail. I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bringing the top solar dogs, the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals. What is a Solarpreneur you might ask a Solarpreneur is a new breed of solar pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery. And you are about to become one what's up Solarpreneurs Taylor Armstrong here with another episode.Speaker 2 (00:45):Hope you're doing awesome. And I am here as always trying to make your life better. As a solar sales professional, help you close more deals, help you generate more leads and help you be successful in this awesome industry. Hopefully I can do that. So today I just got back from a little trip, went to a Dallas, Texas was at Door to Door Fest, 2021. That's what we're going to be talking about today is just a little recap of the event. And hopefully everyone here has gone to some events. I consider them something that's vital to your growth. Something that you need to do something that's refreshing. Okay. Then there also is the flip side, I'll admit. Sometimes I get an a on an event spree. I consider myself sort of a personal development junkie at times. And, um, I think it's easy to get caught in that trap, um, of going too many, go into too many events and not applying the stuff you've learned.Speaker 2 (01:50):So there's gotta be a balance, but I think it's good to go to, you know, an event a quarter, at least a couple events a year. These are things that are going to help refresh your mind, help you give you new ideas, help you connect with other people who are crushing it in the industry. And that's what you need as they say, your network determines your net worth. So you never know who you're going to meet. What that one line is that you're going to learn it. That's going to help you take it to the next level. If you haven't been to any events or if you don't know why you should go to events. We actually did a show on this, uh, probably six, seven months ago, little while ago, but it's the called the importance of live events, I believe was the name of the episode.Speaker 2 (02:36):So go search for that. If you haven't already, and that we broke down just specific reasons why you should be attending events. So I'll get off the soap box, but I wanted to give you Solarpreneurs. I recap if you weren't there of what you missed at door-to-door Fest 2021. Okay. So they got to in door-to-door con and now door to door Fest, not to be confused. Okay. This door to door Fest is, um, put on by my friends, Taylor McCarthy and Danny Pessy two guys who are doing great things for the industry, have a lot of respect for them and both top performers in their own. Right. Um, so I highly recommend their program. Knockstar, if you haven't checked that out. And we had Danny Pessy on the podcast, um, a few weeks back, he shared some details about that and drop some value bombs.Speaker 2 (03:27):So go listen to that episode, if you haven't already, but door-to-door Fest, it was a great event. It was their first kind of big event that they put on. I mentioned I went through their Knockstar program, um, just got through with that. So that's a great resource. If you want to go try it. If you're looking for additional training, it's a great resource. And this was their big event. What I liked about it, um, is it was very solar specific. Most of the people there were in the solar industry and a lot of them were in fact guys that had been on the podcast. So if you recognize any of the names, congrats, you have been a loyal listener. Hey, goodbye guys like Moe Falah. Um, Ian Wendt, Chris Lee, uh, Duane Richins, Zach Bassett three people. Now that they've been on the podcast, um, John Israel, anyways, we'll go through a few different people here, but some sluggers, some heavy sluggers heavy hitters that took the stage and dropped some serious knowledge.Speaker 2 (04:30):So I'm going to break it down day by day. Just give you a brief re recap, hope. Hopefully give you that FOMO that you missed out, because I want to see you all at the next event. I love hanging out with peeps. I love getting introduced to, um, loyal listeners and people who've heard the show. So if you go to these events, come up and say, hi, say what's up. I love it. When people do that and tell me they heard the podcast. Okay. So we went there on Thursday. The event started, um, technically Friday and Saturday was the event, but Thursday they call it the day in Dallas. That was, uh, kind of VIP people who wanted to spend a little bit extra and gets some, um, VIP treatment. And this was awesome. I had never been to quite a pre event thing going on like this.Speaker 2 (05:18):So we get there. We had a training in the morning. Good little training, talked about some, um, sales techniques. Um, a lot of things that you can actually go back in here in Danny Pessy's podcasts, a lot of things similar to that. Um, I received, you know, extra value we heard, but we went in the morning and then where it got interesting was the afternoon. So we go and we're supposed to take buses to go do some margarita, margarita tasting. I don't drink. So for me, it was just going to be kind of hanging out and watching everyone just flushed down these margaritas, but it's all cool. I'm fine with that. Seeing people served down there, we went and we're all sitting outside, waiting for the buses to come and they never show up. So we sit for like 30, 40 minutes and I guess they got their own hotel.Speaker 2 (06:09):So we're all hanging out there, just a shooting, the breeze and hanging out, but made for some good networking. That was the first amount in the afternoon. So we actually skipped the margarita, which I was like, whatever. Cause I was going to give my margaritas to my buddy Rick anyways. Um, so then when the buses finally show up, we go to the next event, which was torn the stadium of the Dallas Cowboys, which was dope. Um, I'd never done an NFL stadium tour and this place is amazing. If you haven't looked it up, go look up. Uh, I think it's 18 T stadium is what it's called. This place can literally fit the statue of Liberty inside it. And still have, I think it was 20 feet of space before it hits the top of the stadium, just a massive stadium. And what was neat is they were actually getting ready for the Canelo fight, uh, the boxer Mexican boxer.Speaker 2 (07:05):Um, so they were getting ready for that. Just stacking chairs, setting up their ring and everything. So we got to see him actually preparing for that event, getting the big screen ready. Um, just a massive jumbotron they had, um, yeah, just biggest screen I've ever seen. I'd say, uh, looked by the IMAX theater on a gym as a jumbotron. So just massive. And then yeah, we, they took us through the locker rooms, took us through to the VIP suites and everything and got to see where all the, you know, rich people hang out famous. People got to see all the players, locker situations, which is cool. Never done that. Got to see like a press room. So it was cool. And we had a little dinner there. Um, hung out, did some more networking. And then after that gets better, we went to a Korean bath house.Speaker 2 (07:56):I didn't even know what this was, but if you guys haven't heard of this, go check it out. Korean bath houses, I guess they are. Uh, I don't know how big it actually is in Korea, but um, very interesting place. So go check it out if you haven't done one, but Danny Pessy swears by these things as something to relax on your off days of knocking, it's just basically a big bath house filled with a bunch of different saunas and hot and cold tubs. And the idea is you just go in all these different rooms. They've got like a cold sauna. That's just filled with, um, kind of ice, I guess, not ice, but um, it's blowing cold air at you. It feels like you're in a igloo. They've got a super hot one. They've got a salt sauna. Um, just anything you can think of as far as saunas go, they've got it all.Speaker 2 (08:44):And then where it got super interesting. Um, now I was a little hesitant at first, but they have the, uh, actual bathroom where obviously, you know, separate you by gender, but you're going into your, your bathrooms. And they've got, um, a cold, a cold tub. They've got a median tub, they've got a hot tub and they've got a scalding tub. I would call it and they go in this bath, um, bath house, whatever you want to call it, you gotta be completely naked in there. So we're going in there. There's like a, I don't know, 50 other guys in this. And they're like, all right, everyone pile in the bath house got to take your clothes off first. And I'm like, Oh shoot, do I want, do I want to pile on the room? Have all these guys see me butt-naked and uh, hanging out with guys that I just barely met. And at first I'm like, ah, maybe I'll just go to the saunas first. But then we all warmed up. We're all friends. Then we piled in the bath house. After that we're all naked in there, no judgment in there. So it was a different experience. Took a second for me to warm up, but Powell in the bath house and nothing better than sitting naked in a cold tub. A bunch of different guys, I guess right.Speaker 2 (09:59):Was a little, uh, yeah, definitely interesting experience something I had to warm up to, but go try it. Don't knock it until you try it. I will say it was super relaxing. Helped us open the pores and ladies, there was all this stuff for the other gender. Two ladies had their own little bath house, um, had their own sections. Don't worry guys. Weren't they weren't combined in genders or anything combined in the bath houses, but it definitely opened up the pores. You definitely felt like you had some new skin slopped on you and was a great experience. I can see how it's relaxing. So go Google. If you have a bath house in your area, I would highly recommend it. If you're looking for something different to do something, to relax you're on your off days and knockin, especially if you're a summer rep, something like that.Speaker 2 (10:44):And you're grinding super hard. I would suggest going and checking these out cause was definitely relaxing. So that was day one. We went and hung out. Did the day in Dallas, toward the city, um, toward the stadium I should say, and then went to the bath house. Good time. And then after that, just to give a brief root crap, that was what I thought was really cool. Never had been doing a meant quite like that or torn stadiums and go into Korean bath houses. But then after that, um, yeah, he had the events, the speakers. And again, like I mentioned, what was really cool about this is they had solar specific speakers and this is something I would suggest anytime you're going to an event, do some research on it, look at the speakers, look at who's going to be there. Um, if you can figure out maybe some other attendees stuff like that, figure out who you want to network with, because these are things that you're going to help you maximize your time in the event.Speaker 2 (11:45):So for me, that was a big factor in me actually deciding to go to them since I was sort of on the fence. I'll admit, I didn't know if I should go in and know if I should take time off. But when I saw the speakers, when I saw, especially this bowl, solar specific guys, I'm like, all right, I can't miss on this. And that's one way you can determine if it's worth your time, go into things like that. Okay. But, um, yeah. Recap on the speakers. Moe spoke Moe follow who we had on the podcast. He just spoke about his origins. Um, very similar to what he talked about in the podcast. And then he just broke it down to really the grit, the grit, that determination you need to have to succeed in your business. And also about importance of setting up systems, um, uh, importance of sending up a SOP standard operating procedures in your business and with your team.Speaker 2 (12:41):So that was the highlight of him. We had, uh, Ian Wendt speak, which these are all what you should be following these people on social media, by the way, if you're not following Moe, if you're not following. So that's something I'll invite you to go, go look up door to door Fest. I would follow all these speakers because guys, this is how you're going to increase your knowledge, follow the best of the best. If you want to get better at something specific, then you go for the best. And that's what this podcast is about is we're surrounding you with the best people in the software industry. Okay? But also we're inviting you to go follow these people, see what their posts and see what is making them successful. Because a lot of these guys are given free value or given awesome golden nuggets every day. So you need to be following them.Speaker 2 (13:24):Okay? Ian Wendt, he spoke about an importance of knowing different customer types. And we're actually going to have him on the show here soon, do some podcasts on this. So we're going to do a recap of that. So stay tuned, but that's something you should definitely consider. What are your different buyer types? Are people aggressive? Are people calm is an old lady. You need to be able to identify these buyer types and change and transform. You need to be a chameleon out there adjusted these different types of buyers. So I was his, and then Chris Lee had him also on the podcast, actually one of our, um, first interviews that we did on the show, go listen to that. But he has a super successful business in soldier, up in Washington state. Um, he talked about his beginnings in the business, in the industry. Um, Zach Bassett of course spoke about the financial stuff.Speaker 2 (14:19):He was on the podcast, um, search creator, social media guy. And then one of my favorites, if not, my favorite of them meant was John Israel. Um, hoping to get him on the show here soon too, that's pending. But if you haven't heard of John Israel, this is another guy you should look up, follow on social media by his book, what he did. If you're not familiar, he wrote five. Thank you cards every day for 365 days, he did kind of an insane challenge. If you think about it and the rules of it are were, he couldn't write more than three. Thank you cards to the same person. So he did that for a year straight and change his life while he's doing it has some amazing stories of just the people he inspired. Um, just the gratitude that came from what his challenge was and all the people that's, hadn't even a lot of people didn't even get thank you cards like this, really in their lives.Speaker 2 (15:17):And he wrote them cards and really inspired a lot of people. So just, these are just a few of the speakers. Okay. I don't want to go on and on forever with all of them, but that's the recap. That's the highlights again, we're going to be getting a lot of these guys on the podcast. A lot of them have already been on the show, but guys go to events like this, look at ones you can attend. Um, I would definitely suggest going to things like this. We're hoping to do some events, Solarpreneur. So hit me up. Shoot me a message. If you would like to see a Solarpreneur event, something we're considering doing and would be awesome hanging out with everybody. Okay. So go share this with someone that missed out on door to door Fest. And if you ever come to the next one, I'll be going to the majority of these events. So hit me up. If you are going, would love to connect with y'all and don't forget, increase your knowledge and make sure to apply cause knowledge without applications useless. That's why you don't get caught in the trap of going to event after event and not applying because that is how you will waste time and money. Trust me, it's happened to me a lot. So thanks for tuning in. We'll see you on the next episode and close some deals this week. Keep crushing.Speaker 1 (16:32):Hey Solarpreneurs. Quick question. What if you could surround yourself with the industry's top performing sales pros, marketers, and CEOs, and learn from their experience and wisdom in less than 20 minutes a day. On today’s episode, Anthony is sitting down with his guest, John Israel. He’s the founder and Chief Gratitude Officer of Mr. In October 2016, John’s love of people lead him to start a social experiment that became a book and TEDx talk and then eventually the Mr. Thank You project. The Mr. Thank You Project started when John was selling Cutco knives as a young man. He had built a relationship with a customer who eventually ended up canceling her order. Naturally, John was impacted by this, but not in the way he thought. It wasn’t the lost sale that he was upset about, but the relationship itself. After a conversation with his mom, he decided to write a letter of gratitude to that customer. The thing about gratitude, John says, is that it’s a reflective state. You have to pause and think about the experience and ask “what is good about this?” A few years later, that same customer called back asking to place an order larger than any in John’s career. As our society moves further and further into automation, it’s hard to compete. In fact, there are many jobs that have as high as 98% likelihood of being automated in the next 20 years. The question John looks to answer is what is that 2%? It’s the human aspect that cannot be imitated. There are three aspects that allow people to stay relevant: Advocacy, persuasion, and influence. A robot simply CAN’T fight for you. People can. Empathy is a very human interaction. Coaching and leadership. People leading people is something that can’t be replaced. Education and expertise. When you’re working with a person, there is a fear of making a mistake. What You’ll Learn On today’s show, John Israel fills us in on what it means to be truly grateful and how we can use gratitude to create meaningful, genuine relationships that last (and pay off). I first heard today’s guest on one of my favorite podcasts, The One Thing. They were interviewing a man named John Israel (AKA “Mr. Thank You”) and I loved the conversation so much I listened THREE times. John later became my own business and life coach and today he joins us to talk about the power of gratitude. John shares with us about how he used to be a “gratitude salesman” however he was struggling internally to practice and find gratitude in his own life. At that point, he made a personal challenge to himself to write FIVE sincere notes of gratitude to others for one solid year. What he learned and how he grew in that process completely changed his life. Today we dig into why he chose to focus on gratitude specifically (and not happiness or joy), the importance of processing through and neutralizing your thoughts, how to be grateful in difficult times, how community “shows up” for you when you begin to practice gratitude, and how this practice changed not only himself but his family, Are you up for the challenge? John challenges us today to find a person who has been a “light in the tunnel’ and has given us hope...and write them a thank-you letter. Tomás: ¿Por qué empezaron a usar OKR? John Israel committed himself to writing 5- thank you cards every day for an entire year and in this podcast he'll explain why simple acts of gratitude are so powerful. Nine out of 10 people who make Real Estate transactions like their agent and would work with them again but only 1 out of 10 do because their agent did not follow-up with them. Real Estate is not just about sales. It’s about making connections to expand your circle. If you are intentional about making a connection with those you do business with, then build relationships that are meaningful for you and your business. The simple act of saying thank you can go beyond handwritten notes.
John Israel is known simply as Mr. Thank You these days. After a stellar 16-year career as a Hall of Fame Cutco sales rep, influential manager, and coach or mentor to many other successful sales reps, John has embarked on a new journey to elevate the level of gratitude on the planet. John Israel is the author and founder of The Mr. Thank You Project: A Journey to Elevate the Level of Gratitude on the Planet … One Card at a Time. Over the course of one year, John wrote five handwritten Thank You cards a day, every day, for 365 straight days. In a world that many believe is less grateful and appreciative than ever before, John’s work has truly struck a chord with people, and he’s shared his experiences on ABC News, FOX News, iHeartRadio, Popsugar, and even in a TEDx Talk. John’s work has had a transformative impact not just on how I live my life, but on the people around me as well. Today, John joins the podcast to share stories and lessons from the Mr. Thank You Project. We get into why John decided to take on this time and labor-intensive project, what makes a handwritten Thank You card a much more powerful expression of gratitude than sharing or commenting on social media, and how you can find your own “why” to inspire others to make the world a better place together. Have you taken any time to be grateful today? When we think about forming power habits, we often think about doing something that will improve our productivity or health. We rarely consider the transformative power of mindset habits, and one of the most powerful habits is gratitude. That may seem like an easy or trivial thing, but in practice, embodying a state of gratitude every day is both surprisingly challenging and significant. Our guest John Israel, founder of The Mr. Thank You Project and author of The Mr. Thank You Project, experienced an epiphany: if he wanted to make a huge, positive impact on the world, he had to start by doing just ONE thing to express his gratitude, every day. John Israel, AKA Mr. Thank You, is on a mission to elevate the level of gratitude on the planet, inspiring 74 million thank-you cards written all over the world. This all started one morning back in October of 2016, when John woke up to realize that he was, in his own words, “a gratitude salesman who wasn't very grateful.” John decided to do everything within his power to live a more authentic life, and explore his capacity to experience and express gratitude. So John writing 5 thank-you cards a day, every day, for a year. The mission transformed his life, family, community, and businesses. His story has been featured on ABC News, Fox News, Popsugar, MarthaStewart.com, and Good Morning America. Professionally, John is a corporate gifting consultant, where he helps companies and businesses retain clients and appreciate referral partners through high-quality gifts. John now speaks at business and organizational conferences where he shares his story and inspires people to make gratitude a habit in their lives. Most recently, John launched his book, The Mr. Thank You Project: A Journey To Elevate The Level Of Gratitude On The Planet, One Card At A Time. “When do I not want to be grateful, and how can I bring gratitude to that experience?” In today's episode, John will expand upon the following thoughts: Do all you can to work on your ability to be present in the moment; this makes it possible to notice the gifts right in front of you. Gratitude can help you learn to deal with and process your emotions more quickly and effectively, so you can move into a state where you can be your best self. If you can say thank you to someone, do it right away. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed; tell them today. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “About a month after beginning the Mr. Thank You project, I got a call from my best friend. We had known each other for years, and his parents were practically like my parents. Unfortunately, my friend was calling to tell me that his father had passed away. Not good news, right? No one likes to hear that. What made it worse, though, was that on my desk, sitting in front of me while my friend had called me was a thank-you card that I had written to his dad but had failed to send because i had gotten “too busy.” It was such a powerful experience, and while I'm not happy that it happened, I'm grateful to have had the experience early on in the Thank You project because what I saw was an urgency to let people know what they mean to me. An urgency to tell people how much they matter. An urgency to forgive people, to ask for forgiveness, to heal relationships, because at the end of someone's life, one of the most common things that is expressed as a regret is what wasn't said, conversations they wish they'd had, someone they wish they had forgiven, or what they wish they had expressed. “By making something like this project a habit, making gratitude a habit, sharing with people what you love about them, you don't have to have that regret at the end of your life, because you've said everything that you need to say. “And people ask, ‘what's the biggest takeaway for this experience for you?' And my answer is: ‘I said it. I've said what I need to say to people. I have no regrets in any of my relationships because I got to complete them. And that is immeasurably valuable.' If you can say thank you to someone, you should do it. Not tomorrow, but today.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Showing gratitude changes lives, and it could change your business as well. What is genuine gratitude, and how do we show it? Why do people care about our “why”? How can sending cards grow your business? In this episode, John Israel talks about how he made showing gratitude central to his business. People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it. -John Israel 3 Things We Learned From This Episode Make time for your friends and family (07:00-09:00) As a business owner, you make the decision of how many hours you’re going to work. Don’t wait too long to enjoy the relationship you have with your kids and family. Gratitude is powerful ( 16:00-17:00) Gratitude not only makes people feel appreciated in your personal life, but it also builds loyalty in your clients. Mailing cards to your clients can help you lower the cancellation rate and build long-term relationships. Daily habits build the business ( 25:00-27:00) You create the security in your business by cultivating habits that attract and retain clients. Put together a plan and set aside some time every day to cultivate a habit that will constantly improve your marketing and customer retention. Showing gratitude is easy, and it can change lives. Invest a bit of time every day in showing gratitude to those who deserve it. Most people are never thanked for their hard work, and you never know how you can touch someone deeply just by saying the right words at the right time. Cards can also be used to show your database that you care about them and appreciate their loyalty. Guest Bio- John Israel is the Chief Gratitude Officer at Mr. Thank You. His goal is to elevate the level of gratitude by 1% and help people express their good thoughts towards others via send out cards. Over the years, he has attracted the attention of various media outlets, including Fox News, NBC, Good Morning America, and MarthaStewart.com. There’s always someone to thank and appreciate. So why don’t we tell people what they mean to us more often? Why do we let excuses like — “I’m too busy” or “What difference will it make?” — get in the way of showing our appreciation to the people who bring value to our lives? John Israel, Founder of the Mr. Thank You Project, joins the podcast to share his mission—to elevate the level of gratitude on the planet by inspiring 74 million Thank You cards. He kicked it off by writing five (5) Thank You cards every day for an entire year, which even got him featured on ABC News! What if everyone in your life knew what they meant to you?
