In 1868, Jacob Kaufmann, the nineteen-year-old son of a German farmer, stepped off a ship onto the shores of New York. His brother Isaac soon followed, and together they joined an immigrant community of German Jews selling sewing items to the coal miners and mill workers of western Pennsylvania. After opening merchant tailor shops in Pittsburgh's North and South sides, the Kaufmann brothers caught the wave of a new type of merchandising—the department store—and launched what would become their retail dynasty with a downtown storefront at Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street. In just two decades, Jacob and his brothers had ascended Pittsburgh's economic and social ladder, rising from hardscrabble salesmen into Gilded Age multimillionaires. Generous and powerful philanthropists, the Kaufmanns left an indelible mark on the city and western Pennsylvania. From Edgar and Liliane's famous residence, the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece called Fallingwater, to the Kaufmann clock, a historic landmark that inspired the expression “meet me under the clock,” to countless fond memories for residents and shoppers, the Kaufmann family made important contributions to art, architecture, and culture. Far less known are the personal tragedies and fateful ambitions that forever shaped this family, their business, and the place they called home. Kaufmann's recounts the story of one of Pittsburgh's most beloved department stores, pulling back the curtain to reveal the hardships, triumphs, and complicated legacy of the prominent family behind its success. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne continue the series, Conversations with the EQUUS Herd. After a chat to catch up on the current social situation, the episode features interviews with Candace Carrabus, Linda Sheehan and Janet Winters from the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park. Candace Carrabus writes from the Lincoln County, Missouri farm she shares with her husband and daughter. A scoliosis diagnosis at age 11 changed her life. A horse lover from a young age, she signed up for riding lessons and learned much more than posting trot. With quiet power, horses provided comfort and a sympathetic ear, never judging or poking fun at her cumbersome back brace. Those years, though often difficult, taught Candace the value of persistence, the healing power of believing in oneself, and how strength can be gained through kindness. Her stories are imbued with the irresistible wonder, mystery, and solace her equine friends have provided.https://candacecarrabus.comLinda Brown Sheehan is a lifelong animal enthusiast, and supporter of charitable organizations specializing in the prevention of cruelty to animals. The experiences and observations she has volunteering in animal rescue provide ample material for her artwork. Linda and her husband Eric, both from Iowa, have two sons and two dogs. The family currently lives in Plano, Texas. Linda's book, The Story of Bubbles, was written to benefit Becky's Hope Horse Rescue in Frisco, Texas. https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/linda-sheehanhttps://www.amazon.com/Story-Bubbles-Linda-Brown-Sheehan/dp/1542812887Janet Winters fell in love with mysteries and horses thanks to Trixie Belden. After reading Trixie's first adventure, in which she and Honey cantered down the bridle path to solve a mystery, Janet was hooked. Then came Agatha, Sir Author, Rex, Daphne, and of course Dorothy L., who inspired her to name her horses after characters in the Lord Peter Wimsey series. Janet was encouraged to write after winning a fifth grade essay contest which was actually published in the local newspaper. After that, her writing took a deviant turn to ad copy, press releases, and commercials, for which she snagged a Matrix Award. After thirty years of convincing people to buy things they didn't need, she turned to her real love...mysteries. She penned her first novel "Murder at Morgan House", introducing amateur sleuth Ivy Snow, her psychic teenage daughter Jaycee, and potential paramour Detective John Garrett. Together they expose deadly secrets that lie beneath the veneer of quintessential American small town life.https://thebarngoddesschronicles.comTo learn more about podcast host Julianne and her partner Bruce Anderson, tune in to "Whinny Tales: Horse Stories, Pony Legends and Unicorn Yarns," the official podcast of Nature's View and The Marley Project, their equine and arts-based 501 (c)(3). Journalist, author, and advocate Gretchen Carlson paved the way for #metoo with her historic 2016 sexual harassment complaint against the chairman of Fox News. Named one of Time Magazine's “100 Most Influential People in the World,” and author of New York Times bestsellers “Be Fierce” and “Getting Real,” Carlson is one of America's most successful news anchors and a globally recognized advocate for women's empowerment. Carlson previously hosted “The Real Story” on Fox News, and co-hosted the number-one rated cable morning news show, “Fox and Friends," for more than seven years. Carlson's recently announced return to television, as host and producer of A+E and Lifetime Network documentaries, breaks the barriers and blacklisting she faced after saying “enough” to harassment. Her comeback is a beacon of hope for other brave women demoted, fired, or blacklisted from their chosen careers after reporting sexual harassment. Carlson started her television career as a political reporter in Richmond, Virginia, and then served as an anchor and reporter in Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dallas. In 2000 Carlson moved to national news as co-host and correspondent on CBS' “The Saturday Early Show,” where she covered some of the world's biggest stories, including the 9-11 terrorist attack from the World Trade Center, the Bush-Gore election, and Oklahoma City Bomber Tim McVeigh's execution. She also reported and produced a 30-part series on domestic violence that won several national awards. In 2016 Carlson became the face of workplace harassment survivors, gracing the covers of Time and Good Housekeeping magazines. Carlson's book “Be Fierce” debuted in October 2017 and immediately joined “Getting Real” as a New York Times bestseller. Since her harassment complaint became public, Carlson has worked fearlessly to change laws that protect predators. In December 2017, she joined a bi-partisan coalition of legislators to introduce the “Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Harassment Act,” which voids forced arbitration agreements that prevent sexual harassment survivors from getting their day in court. Profits from “Be Fierce” go to Carlson's Gift of Courage Fund, which supports organizations empowering women and young girls. This year the fund is providing free workshops to low-income women facing gender-based discrimination and violence through the Gretchen Carlson Leadership Initiative and supporting the March of Dimes' Gretchen Carlson Advocacy Fellows. Carlson's advocacy has been honored by numerous organizations, including the New York Women in Communications' Matrix Award; the Radio Television Digital News Association's First Amendment Leadership Award; the National Organization for Women's 2018 Women of Power and Influence Award; and the YWCA Greater Los Angeles' 2018 Phenomenal Champion of Change. An honors graduate of Stanford University, Carlson was valedictorian of her high school class and studied at Oxford University in England. A violin prodigy, she performed as a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra at age 13, and in 1989 became the first classical violinist to win the Miss America crown. Carlson is the first former Miss America to serve as Chair of the Miss America Organization. Carlson also serves as a national Trustee for the March of Dimes; on the Board of the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary in Newtown, Connecticut; and as a Trustee of the Greenwich Academy, an all-girls preparatory day school. She is an active volunteer at her church, and hosted the 2016 “Miss You Can Do It” pageant in Illinois to celebrate the achievements of girls and young women with disabilities. Carlson is married to sports agent Casey Close. The couple lives in Greenwich with their two children. In this episode, you will learn: How Gretchen learned business and humility How speaking up can change the world How you CAN be courageous even when you're afraid

Melba Tolliver knows a thing or two about African-American firsts. She was the first black person ever to anchor a network news program. The year was Marchl of 1967, and the news staff at ABC network was on strike. Network executives drafted Melba as the replacement on the Marlene Sanders show News With The Womans Touch. That was just the beginning of a long list of firsts for Melba Tolliver. It was also the beginning a illustrious career in broadcast journalism. Four years after her career launch as the accidental anchorwoman, Melba was assigned to cover the White House Rose Garden Wedding of Tricia Nixon. However, when she showed up in Washington, D.C. with her hair in an Afro instead of her usual straightened style, the brass as WABC temporarily took her off the air. It was time when African Americans were redefining who they were, and Melbas hairdo was another turning point. Never one to knowingly leave a stone unturned or an opportunity on the table, thats Melba's voice you hear on Gimme Me Shelter, the Rolling Stones documentary drawing a hilarious response from Mick Jagger when she posed the question, Are you satisfied yet? Melba is writing a memoir from her home on the Delaware River, appropriately titled Accidental Anchorwoman: Choice, Chance, and Change. An honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Molloy College, Long Island, NY; a political reporting award from Lincoln University; a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Association of Black Journalists, the John B. Russwurm Award from the New York City Urban League, the Matrix Award from New York Women in Communications, and a National Endowment of the Humanities Fellowship to the University of Michigan are among her many honors. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Candace Bushnell, Journalist, Producer, Author, “Sex and the City”About Harvey's guest:Today's guest, Candace Bushnell, is a best-selling novelist, journalist, TV producer, and, most recently, the star of her own one-woman show. She's the celebrated author of “Sex and the City”, which formed the basis for the phenomenally successful TV show that aired for 6 seasons on HBO, followed by 2 hugely popular movies, and the re-boot TV series “And Just Like That”, currently in production for its third season. She has also written NINE other internationally bestselling books: “Four Blondes”, “Trading Up”, “Lipstick Jungle”, “One Fifth Avenue”, “The Carrie Diaries”, “Summer and the City”, “Killing Monica”, “Is There Still Sex in the City”, and “Rules for Being a Girl”. Her books, “Lipstick Jungle” and “The Carrie Diaries” were BOTH made into TV series for two seasons. Back in the 90s, our guest had her own reality show called “Sex, Lives and Video Clips”. Since then, she had an interview program on Sirius Satellite Radio called “Sex, Success and Sensibility”, which explored women's careers and relationships. She then had a 4-part web-series called “The BROAD ROOM”, which took a humorous look at women in the workplace. And THEN, she created her own BRILLIANT one-woman show called “True Tales of Sex, Success, and Sex and the City,” where she takes the audience on a whirlwind tour of New York City, from Studio 54 to the Lipstick Jungle and beyond, sharing her remarkable stories of fashion, literature and sex while pouring cosmos in Manolos. This highly acclaimed show started out off-Broadway in New York and got rave reviews. She has taken the show overseas, to a number of countries, and as far away as South Africa, and she is currently on tour in the US, playing to sold out audiences and getting standing ovations. And in December, she's taking the show to Australia. She is the winner of the 2006 Matrix Award for books, and a recipient of the Albert Einstein Spirit of Achievement Award. She's a frequent guest on ALL of the major talk shows, and she's constantly in demand because of her intelligence, warmth, wit, fearlessness and immense likeability.
