Sandy Rosenthal founded the non-profit Levees.org in 2005 with 25,000 supporters nationwide. Her book, Words Whispered in Water, is about how––against all odds––she altered the national narrative about the deadly flooding in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. A second edition of her book, with a new cover and foreword, will be issued for the 20th anniversary of the catastrophe. Her group's current goal is for all students in the U.S. working toward their B.S. in engineering to receive instruction on failures and the lessons learned. In March of 2019, Rosenthal unveiled the Flooded House Museum at a major breach site. She initiated the installation of three historic plaques vetted by the state's preservation office, hosts an annual levee breach bike tour, and much more. For those efforts, Rosenthal has been honored with numerous awards most recently including Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year from Tulane University and Most Influential Woman from Mount Holyoke College. Rosenthal is an advocate for 62% of the American population living in counties protected by levees. Joyce Brenny and Joe Lynch discuss charity champions: specialized trucking and a mission. Joyce is the CEO & Founder of Brenny Transportation, a Minnesota based trucking company that specializes in the transportation of large, heavy, and bulky items that necessitate specialized handling, equipment, and permits. Summary: Charity Champions: Specialized Trucking and a Mission In this podcast, we explore the world of specialized trucking with Joyce Brenny, CEO and founder of Brenny Transportation, and discuss her role as president of the St. Christopher's Trucker Relief and Development Fund. Brenny shares insights into her Minnesota-based company, which hauls unique freight like granite for the Smithsonian and steel bases for windmills, and how they support their drivers through transparent lease purchase programs and customized trucks. We also delve into the mission of the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund, which provides medical and psychological support to truck drivers in need and promotes initiatives to improve driver health and wellness. Throughout the podcast, Brenny emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and empowering environment for truck drivers and showcases her commitment to improving the trucking industry. #TMSAElevate #BrennyTransportation #StChristopherTruckersFund About Joyce Brenny Joyce Brenny's trucking career began in 1981 behind the wheel of a semi-truck. She later transitioned to customer service, sales, and leadership roles, eventually founding Brenny Transportation, a Women's Business Enterprise (WBE) in her hometown of St. Joseph, MN, in 1996. A tireless advocate for the industry, Joyce has held numerous leadership positions including the Minnesota Trucking Association Board (first woman trucker Chair), the American Trucking Associations' Safety Policy Committee, and the American Transportation Research Advisory Committee. Currently President of The St. Christopher's Trucker Relief & Development Fund, Joyce has also been recognized by Women In Trucking as a Top Place for Women to Work and Most Influential Woman in Trucking. Most recently, she was nominated for positions on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Policy Committee, Women of Trucking Advisory Board, and the American Trucking Association Executive Board of Directors. Complementing her extensive industry experience, Joyce holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Behavior and Behavior Psychology from the College of St. Scholastica. Driven by a personal mission to create a safe and welcoming work environment for women in trucking, Joyce champions the rights and respect for all professional truck drivers, believing her purpose is to improve the industry for those dedicated to this essential service. About Brenny Transporation Brenny Transportation was founded in 1996 because Joyce and Todd Brenny wanted to be part of a company that treated people with respect, a company which honored champion character, with a team driven to serve. Brenny's inception into the trucking world began in a very humble way: in a small rented office in Waite Park, MN with three employees and the power of a big idea. Joyce and Todd wanted to show the trucking world that providing Grand Champion Customer Service in an honest and ethical manner could lead to success, and it has. Brenny's growth has been adaptable to the needs of their customers. Brenny has grown because of their superior respect for their customers' needs, as well as honoring the hard work and dedication of their champion team members. Customers and team members never question if Brenny cares. They know that Brenny cares. There are many years of transportation knowledge and experience leading Brenny; experience you can count on. Joyce's career in transportation began in 1980 and Todd's began in 1988. Brenny's Vice President, Bonnie Supan began her career in transportation in 1994. You could say Joyce, Todd and Bonnie are transportation experts. Todd and Joyce both started their careers in transportation behind the wheel of a truck. Between Joyce, Todd and Bonnie they have performed most duties involved in the transportation industry. This expanded knowledge of transportation has helped Brenny secure a stable place in the trucking industry. Sandy Rosenthal founded the non-profit Levees.org in 2005. The group focuses on educating the public that the flooding of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina was due to federal engineering mistakes, not the wrath of nature. Her book, Words Whispered in Water (Mango, 2020) is about how––against all odds––she altered the national narrative about the flooding disaster. In March 2019, Rosenthal unveiled the Flooded House Museum at a major breach site. Rosenthal is an advocate for the 62% of the American population living in counties protected by levees. Sandy's powerful message is bringing to light a mostly unknown yet dangerous situation in many parts of our country and she's an inspiration on how to truly mobilize citizen participation. Recently, I did a call to action in a Facebook Group dedicated to women in Optometry (shout out to you, OD Divas)! I asked if anyone had any experiences that they would like to share regarding a toxic or negative work environment. I was shocked by the amount of my fellow colleagues that reached out to me and the experiences about how they were wronged in the industry. I believe these stories of women in Optometry need to be told. That is why Latte Money is starting a series called: Seeing Our Truth. This series is dedicated to the Optometrists that have been treated like assistants instead of doctors and have chosen to do something about it! I cannot imagine beginning this discussion without speaking to Dr. Maria Sampalis. If you are an optometrist, you have definitely heard her name!! Dr. Sampalis shares when she didn't get the answers she was seeking, she created her own! And the optometry world has been better because of it! Divas, Diamonds, & Dollars - About Women, Lifestyle & Financial Savvy!
Today we're excited to bring you an installment from our signature Trailblazer interview series, as we sit down and take a deep success dive with today's super-stars who are doing B.I.G. (Bold, Inspiring & Gifted) Things, and changing the world we live in. I'm pleased to introduce Sandy Rosenthal founder of the non-profit Levees.org whose focus is educating the public that the flooding of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina was due to federal engineering mistakes, not the wrath of nature. Sandy is the author of the book, Words Whispered in Water; Why the Levees Broke in Hurricane Katrina (Mango, 2020) which is about how–against all odds–she altered the national narrative about the flooding disaster. For those efforts, Rosenthal has been honored with numerous awards most recently including Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year from Tulane University and Most Influential Woman from Mount Holyoke College. Rosenthal is an advocate for the 62% of the American population living in counties protected by levees. Sandy's powerful message is bringing to light a mostly unknown yet dangerous situation in many parts of our country and she's an inspiration on how to truly mobilize citizen participation.
Welcome to Episode 97 of our podcast, Courageous Conversations, hosted by Leanne Pilkington. In this episode, our guest is Laura Valenti, is an REIQ board director and the founder of Solutions Property Management in southeast Queensland. With a focus on addressing domestic violence and a passion for empowering women, Laura was named the AREAs 2020 ‘Most Influential Woman in the Property Market'. Far too many headlines in the past few years have highlighted the tragedy of domestic violence. In this Courageous Conversation, Laura Valenti shares how the real estate industry can step up to assist, along with the ongoing challenges facing the property management sector as the nation emerges from a pandemic. When it comes to domestic violence, there are few people with as much access to what happens behind closed doors as a property manager. After all, what other professions have the right to regularly enter a home, assess its condition and get a feel for what's happening behind the scenes? That's why Solutions Property Management owner Laura Valenti believes real estate professionals have an opportunity and an obligation to make a real difference. This stance, and the initiatives she has put in place as a result, saw Laura named the Most Influential Woman in the Property Market at the REA awards in 2020. In the time since, Laura has been developing a two-pronged approach to ensure the property management industry steps up to help survivors of domestic and family violence. In this Courageous Conversation with Leanne Pilkington, Laura shares an insight into how real estate can play a role in recognising domestic and family violence, and helping its survivors. She shares the easy steps agencies can take to ensure the issue is on their radar, that their staff know what to do, and how they can help survivors access the help they need to re-establish their lives. With no experience of domestic violence personally, Laura explains the issue is far more common than many would believe and the past two years have shone a spotlight on just how prevalent the problem is. And that's just one of the issues that came to light for the property management sector during Covid. In a wide-ranging podcast, Laura also discusses the personal toll Covid-19 has taken on business leaders, and how the property management industry has altered in the period since. She touches on the stress many PMs have endured, the mass exodus from the industry, and also looks at how the property management industry has changed permanently as a result. “Housing is just intrinsically entwined with helping people get out of a DFV situation, because if there was a place to go to, then that's the first step. They leave, have a safe place and then start to get all of the things they need – the counselling, the connection to legal services – so that they can start to rebuild their lives. But you can't have any of that if you don't have a safe place to stay.” Laura Valenti. Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast via Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify or Google Podcasts.

In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Dr. Carrie Gress and we’re talking not only about the beauty (and theology!) of home, but also the beauty of homemaking - a concept that might sound a little outdated - don’t worry, we’re going to get into that, too. There’s a line from the song “Oh Holy Night” that keeps coming to mind - “A weary world rejoices” - and if your year has been anything like mine, it has indeed been a Christmas season I’ve arrived at weary, but also rejoicing. If you’re desiring to be intentional with the home that you create not only this Christmas season but all year round, sister, this letter is for you! Topics we talked about in this episode: How we can reclaim the word “homemaker” Patrick Lenocioni’s three common elements to evaluate job happiness and what the answers mean for homemakers Why there needs to be a re-connection between homes and homemaking Carrie’s advice for single women when it comes to mothering and creating a home Encouragement for the mundane moments of motherhood Resources you should check out after listening to this episode: Pre-order your copy of "Letters to Women: Embracing the Feminine Genius in Everyday Life." If You Want to Stay Calm in Times of Crisis You Should: Start listening to your body during times of stress and build awareness around your bodies signals. Be intentional about how you start your day and how you want to show up in the world. Incorporate small things into your morning routine that will set you up for success. Get curious about what you are feeling, label it, and sit with it instead of running from it. Practice letting go of control and accept that your reality is often something you cannot control. Shift your mindset to focus on the opportunities that your stress can bring you. Have faith that your current situation will bring you to the best-case scenario. Getting Over Your Overwhelm Your autonomic nervous system, or your stress response system, plays a huge role in managing your overall health. During crazy times such as these, when our feelings of overwhelm are at an all-time high, it is crucial to learn how to navigate uncontrollable change without overloading our perceived stress. Stress is one of the most insidious root causes of many health issues, and without the right tools and strategies to create balance and let your intensity go, your candle will totally burn out. The good news is that you can implement small things in your pre-existing daily routine that takes no time at all. These mindset shifts and tools to build awareness within your body can have a radical change on your stress levels day today. Letting Go of Control and Embracing Acceptance Gratitude practices, essential oils, and deep breathing techniques can help you switch your stress response system tracks and change your state of mind. Instead of expecting change to bring you somewhere worse, focus on how that change could bring you somewhere better. Some of the most extraordinary things that happen in life are just on the other side of fear. When you can accept your reality, sit with how you are feeling, and have faith that whatever is coming your way is supposed to be part of your human experience, you can let go of control and look within yourself to find healing. Are you ready to improve the way you move through the stress response system, shift your mindset, and set yourself up with self-care every day? Share which of Nicole’s easy, simple, and speedy self-care tips you will implement into your morning routine with me in the comments section of the episode page. Determination and clarity personified, a leader living with the highest of standards Yolan Friedmann is currently the CEO of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, she has an academic background in Veterinary Nursing, a BA in English and Communications, an MSc in Environmental Studies (WITS) and an MDP from the Gordon Institute for Business Science (University of Pretoria). She was the first female recipient of the SAB Nick Steele Environmentalist of the Year award, which she won in 2011. She was also the winner of the CEO Most Influential Woman in Business and Environment award in 2012 in the Environmental category; the recipient of the 2012 Green Globe award. A key focus of Yolan's career has been leadership development and strategy facilitation, Yolan was invited to participate in the Crans Montana Forum in 2015 and was selected as a GreenMatter Senior Fellow in 2014. My Key takeaways Something Yolan and I discussed much in different ways throughout our time together was leadership - the definition of a leader, through to what a leader demonstrates. I feel that Yolan is qualified to speak with the clarity she does and I believe that you would agree with that statement if you too were to listen to this great interview. Her whole career has revolved around passion, purpose and impact. She knew from a young age that this would need to be the case In order for her to feel satisfied. Yolan shares some great wisdom around having an open and flexible direction and how this pays off. There are many different causes we can feel compelled to create real impact within but the way in which we can impact is vast. This is where Yolan feels we need the greatest flexibility. Whilst joining or building a team for a not for profit, we must always keep in mind that this is the most vital part of the process for success; the right team of people is paramount as we grow something that inspires us - alongside the initial cause, it's these people that will give us the inspiration to carry on when it all appears to be too much to handle and these times will arise! I could talk much about the individual that Yolan is from successfully competing in 15 double marathons through to ‘leading' many charity focused causes but ultimately taking the time to listen to this truly valuable interview will teach you massively as it did me!
