Hi friends, Amy here.There won't be an actual audio release this week and here's why… we met up in person and celebrated our birthdays together, made some drinks, opened some presents, and just chatted about life. But as a result, some might find the sound quality of the finished product pretty hard to listen to. There are lots of extra sounds because, when we meet in person we tend to get a little more animated than when we're on our computers at our own homes. So we emphasized by banging hands on the table and even the mics occasionally. You can also hear the shaking of martinis. On top of that, since we had to sit so close together in order to all be on camera, our voices are picked up in each other's mics. I did my best to fix that in post, but I'm not totally happy with it. So I'm not going to release an audio version of this one. It's definitely a visual episode anyway. Megan discusses the importance and benefits of having diverse leadership in both appearance and philosophy, how minority groups are continuing to strive for a seat at the proverbial table, and how Ujima, Inc. continues to work to diversify leadership in the provision of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.In this second episode in a series addressing barriers to survivors of violence, we explore the barriers faced by women of color, especially Black women, the complications of seeking services when the provider may not have diversity in leadership, and the empowerment we can obtain when we all strive to ensure decision-makers in organizations of service mirror the people they strive to assist. Gretta Gordy Gardner and Megan Simmons from Ujima: The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community, discuss how systemic racism affects black survivors of domestic violence. Gretta Gordy Gardner, Esq., is the Deputy Director and co-founder of Ujima, Inc.: The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community, a project of the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Ms. Gardner’s career as a legal advisor for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault was inspired by her early work as a prosecutor in the Domestic Violence Unit of the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office. She has worked for two decades to help shape guidelines, policies, and procedures that local, state, and federal policy makers and college/university campuses can use to end intimate partner violence and racial bias. She is licensed to practice law in DC, MD, TX, and the Supreme Court of the United States and is a certified mediator. Ms. Gardner sits on the Board of Trustees for Garrison Forest School and belongs to a multitude of local, state, and national committees that address violence against women and their children. She is the proud mom of two boys who love basketball and make a lot of noise. I had such a great discussion with Megan Simmons for this episode. Megan's dad died when she was just 4 years old. Later, her mom died when she was a young adult. I always feel it's such a privilege to talk with adults who lost a parent at a young age, and am so grateful when they are willing to come on the podcast and talk with me about their journey and their experiences. Some topics Megan and I cover include: Moving to be closer to her mom's family after her dad died; Feeling as a child that she needed to help others feel better about her situation; Believing that she should feel sad as a child, and feeling guilty when she was happy; Learning at a young age that life is short and she didn't want to take anything for granted; How growing up without her dad affected her confidence; How her mom vowed to give her kids a sense of security, stability, and love after their dad died; Writing children's books in honor of her parents, to help her own children grieve; and How losing both of her parents at a young age has affect her own parenting. And often that’s because there is a disconnect between what students expect from college teaching and what actually ends up happening in the classroom.
