The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla
Episode 304 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the ice discussing Chris Chelios.Born in the Chicago area, Chelios seemed destined for a career in hockey before his family moved to San Diego while he was in high school. However, Chelios eventually found success playing for a Junior team in Moose Jaw and then won a National Championship at the University of Wisconsin.Selected 40th overall in the 1981 NHL Draft, Chelios joined the Montreal Canadiens towards the end of the 1983-1984 season. He then helped the veteran squad capture a Stanley Cup title after the 1985-1986 campaign, was the first non-French-Canadian captain in franchise history, made two All-Star teams and established himself as one of the NHL's best Defensemen when he won the first of three career Norris Trophies after 1989-1990.Chelios was then traded to his hometown Chicago Blackhawks before the 1990-1991 season, made seven All-Star teams in eight and a half seasons and helped lead Chicago to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1991-1992.The ageless wonder then spent nine seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, made two All-Star teams and won two more Stanley Cup titles! He even won a gold medal with Team USA during the 2002 Winter Olympics during this span! Then after one season with the Atlanta Thrashers, Chelios finally retired at the age of 48!Chelios could do everything on the blue line for any team he played for, and in 2013 was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.Watch, Subscribe & Comment on All Platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/the-sports-experience-podcast-with-chris-quinn/id1529622054Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1esgBLz04MZYrTgYMk5DvaConnect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: https://www.instagram.com/cquinncomedy/Dominic DiTolla: https://www.instagram.com/ditolladominic/Ty Engle:https://www.instagram.com/ty_englestudio/S.E.P.: https://www.instagram.com/thesportsexperiencepodcast/If you enjoy our podcast, please help support us:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast#chicagoblackhawks#hockey#nhl#montrealcanadiens#chrischelios#detroitredwingsEpisode

Has Steve Yzerman done enough to help the Detroit Red Wings become a Stanley Cup playoff team? Tune in as we discuss what would need to happen for the Red Wings to contend with the likes of Montreal and Ottawa for a wild card spot, starting with the goalies in John Gibson, Cam Talbot, and Sebastian Cossa (4:00), before going over how Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson, Jacob Bernard-Docker, Erik Gustafsson, Ben Chiarot (and even an unlikely Axel Sandin Pellikka) would help the defense improve (14:15). After that, the forwards including another Marco Kasper season, Lucas Raymond's ceiling, Dylan Larkin alongside Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp, Patrick Kane, Jonatan Berggren and Elmer Soderblom, potentially one of Nate Danielson or Carter Mazur to join the top 6, J.T. Compher improving, the Todd McLellan effect in Hockeytown, what Yzerman should do at the trade deadline (Karlsson, Rust, or Rakell?), and more (31:40). Next, NHL news in a shockingly decentralized NHL Draft continuing next season and how Gary Bettman & Co. should improve it (1:01:50) before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:12:40) - enjoy! Today's word of the day is ‘consequences' as in the NHL as in NIL as in Canada as in change. Gavin McKenna is the lock of all locks to be the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. And he's going to college. A top Canadian JR player headed to the US is unheard of. But NIL has changed the world of hockey forever. (11:00) We have another investigation into an MLB agent. Another case of an agent taking advantage of a foreign player. It's sad. Someone had asked me a question about MLB owners and the MLBPA so let me answer that. (25:45) We have an F1 update! Christian Horner has been fired by Red Bull. Wow. (33:00) Review: Dept. Q. (36:30) Draymond Green sounded off on the new CBA. He said free agency is dead. He said players aren't educated on business. Hmm. (44:45) The Big Beautiful Bill is already upsetting Congress. Here we go. We've got people in Congress writing up bills to change the gambling law in the bill. Woof. (49:00) NPPOD. Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. TK told the guys why Gavin McKenna going to Penn State for a year makes sense before he becomes the top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Tyler said it will help McKenna get ready for the league in a less grinding way than playing in Juniors would. Tyler said there weren't many guys from his era that went to college if they were already playing outside of America. Will this set a trend for big-time NHL prospects playing a year of college hockey?
Oneil Cruz is in the HR Derby. But does he deserve it? Does it matter? All Star games are mostly a joke, but apparently there's belief that Cruz shouldn't be in because he's had a disappointing season. Is it about entertainment or about deserving? That latter hasn't mattered in years. One caller said he had as much talent as Cruz, just didn't have the size. Do callers think Oneil Cruz deserves to be in the HR Derby? Ben and Brent reset on the Blue Jays to start their second hour with a look ahead to the MLB trade deadline. The hosts discuss what the team could add and at what cost, while sifting through some of the top names on the 2025 trade board. They focus on one marquee name out there, two-time Cy Young winner Jacob DeGrom, and question what the asking price would seemingly be. Later, Ben and Brent shift gears to chat about Gavin McKenna, projected top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and his decision to sign with Penn State for the upcoming NCAA season. Gord Stellick (24:37), former GM turned NHL analyst, takes a look at the Maple Leafs' offseason thus far, what Brad Treliving has done, what's still on the table, and the main roster differences from last year to the present. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
Carts and King swing by the TRIA studio for a marathon summer vibe check in the State of Hockey. The guys talk about their summer plans so far, the never ending trolling feed from the Stanley Cup Champions, the NHL Draft, shaking up free agency, and obviously the vibe check since some major Wild pieces are currently without signed deals. Can King get any sleep when the kids are out for the night? I think he'll feel much better when Rossi and Kaprizov "make it home safely," and he can relax. Hope you can enjoy a wonderful summer pod to hold you over until the Minnesota State Fair. Details to be announced in the coming weeks.
Paul Skenes is an All Star again. He was also pulled after just 78 pitches yesterday in one of the more dominant outings of his season. The sad thing is – did it matter? The guys wondered why Skenes wasn't publicly vocal about it. Skenes could have pitched a complete game and the Pirates still weren't scoring a run. Is there an amount of media pressure that could open Bob Nutting to making a significant change? Is the plan for Paul Skenes to go light leading up to next Tuesday to make sure he is eligible to pitch in the All Star Game? Is it bad on the Pirates to admit to getting Skenes ready for an exhibition game? Did Rob Manfred or someone from the league step in and ask them to do it? Would it be treated differently if the Pirates were in a playoff chase? BREAKING: Penn State hockey has landed Gavin McKenna, the top prospect in the 2026 NHL Draft. Weekend Review.
