Die Stadt Dschenin im Westjordanland ist ein Brennpunkt des Nahostkonflikts. Im Kreuzfeuer zwischen Palästinensern und Israeli entstand ein Theater, das den Waffen mit Worten entgegnete. Dafür wurde es zerstört. Aber tot ist das Theater noch nicht. International im Sommer – die Kurzreportage. Am 13. Dezember 2023 drangen israelische Soldaten ins Freedom Theatre Dschenin ein. Kurz danach verhafteten sie den Theaterdirektor Mustafa Sheta in einer grossen Militäroperation. «Die Soldaten kamen von allen Seiten, um mich zu verhaften: durch den Garten, sogar vom Dach, überall standen Jeeps: ich kam mir vor wie ein gesuchter Top-Terrorist, wie Osama Bin Laden.» Trotz internationaler Proteste von Kulturschaffenden: der Theaterdirektor verbrachte – ohne Anklage - fünfzehn Monate in israelischen Gefängnissen. Erst, als er am 13. März 2025 freigelassen wurde, erfuhr er: sein Theater gab es nicht mehr. Das Quartier, in dem es entstanden war: nur noch Schutt und Asche. Das palästinensische Freedom Theatre im Flüchtlingslager Dschenin, das ursprünglich von der jüdischen Menschenrechtsaktivistin Arna Mer-Chamis und ihrem Sohn Juliano gegründet worden war, schien endgültig tot. Mundtot ist das Theater aber, aller Gewalt zum Trotz, noch immer nicht. Es spielt wieder. Und bietet Kindern und Jugendlichen, die inmitten dieser Gewalt Eltern, Freunde, Geschwister und ihr Zuhause verloren haben, weiterhin einen Ort, wo sie ihre Gefühle ausdrücken können. Die Reportage über eine Reise zu einem Theater, das sich nicht mundtot machen lässt.

Kurz danach verhafteten sie den Theaterdirektor Mustafa Sheta in einer grossen Militäroperation. «Die Soldaten kamen von allen Seiten, um mich zu verhaften: durch den Garten, sogar vom Dach, überall standen Jeeps: ich kam mir vor wie ein gesuchter Top-Terrorist, wie Osama Bin Laden.» Trotz internationaler Proteste von Kulturschaffenden: der Theaterdirektor verbrachte – ohne Anklage - fünfzehn Monate in israelischen Gefängnissen. Erst, als er am 13. März 2025 freigelassen wurde, erfuhr er: sein Theater gab es nicht mehr. Das Quartier, in dem es entstanden war: nur noch Schutt und Asche. Das palästinensische Freedom Theatre im Flüchtlingslager Dschenin, das ursprünglich von der jüdischen Menschenrechtsaktivistin Arna Mer-Chamis und ihrem Sohn Juliano gegründet worden war, schien endgültig tot. Mundtot ist das Theater aber, aller Gewalt zum Trotz, noch immer nicht. Es spielt wieder. Und bietet Kindern und Jugendlichen, die inmitten dieser Gewalt Eltern, Freunde, Geschwister und ihr Zuhause verloren haben, weiterhin einen Ort, wo sie ihre Gefühle ausdrücken können.
