Note: This one is out of order due to an upload mix-up. Hope you still enjoy it After subjecting Anna to several end of the world myths, this month Matthew swings in the other direction with the Chinese creation myth of Pangu (probably the coolest dude we've covered since Enkidu). It's got giant eggs, hairy giants, questionable axes and so much more. And at the end we get everything! Please rate, review, and subscribe wherever you can. It really helps the show. Gregory Ripley is a Taoist Priest in the Quanzhen Longmen tradition, and a Forest Therapy Guide. In this episode we discuss his brand new book, One Hundred Remedies of the Tao: Spiritual Wisdom for Interesting Times. Throughout this conversation we discuss Wu Wei and achieving "the zone" flow states, how philosophy acts as medicine, syncretism between the mystery schools of ancient far east and Occident, the role of luminaries and the pole star in Taoism, and much more. In the Plus+ Extension, we investigate the relationship of the living to their ancestors, the primordial being Pangu, dynastic cycles as world age revolutions, the emperor as sacred center, eclipses and the saving of the sun ritual, Mercury and internal alchemy, and how to keep hold of our spiritual epiphanies in times of dissonance. Learn more about your ad choices. Almost every culture has its mythology. Some of them reflect moral standards of human society, such as: justice will prevail over evil. Some are attempts to answer important questions about the universe and human beings: What is the origin of the universe? Where do human beings come from? Where do people go when they die? Knowing mythologies will help you understand the culture. Today, Nathan will share with you three mythology stories, which every Chinese person knows, amongst which the famous "Pangu separates heaven and earth". ◉ Read transcripts for free ◉ Quizlet flashcards ◉ Become a Patron ◉ Our new merch store! ◉ Find us on YouTube ◉ We are on LinkedIn ◉ We are on Facebook ◉ Find a Chinese teacher on italki and receive $10 ◉ One-time Donate

Script: https://tcmpodcast.me/episode-03-dating-as-a-digital-nomad/ From the very beginning, the ancient China remained directly or closely sacrificial. It is unfortunate but ancient China was built upon sacrifice. Sacrificial elements were of utmost meaning in the ancient China. Very alike European cultures, ancient and medial China followed the evolution from blood sacrifice to non-blood, re-presented as it is believed “morally correct” sacrifice, and to the ethical systems, such as Taoism and Confucianism, that evolved from it. The status of individuals in ancient China was determined by the perceived degree of his or her association with the supernatural. In ancient China, supernatural capabilities were common to virtually all Chinese medical doctors. They all had supernatural capabilities that were all documented in medical texts. Shang dynasty (1766-1046 BCE), sacrifice consisted in humans and animals and, to a lesser extent, wine and food, and as practiced later in Japan, tools, weapons and clothing. There is clear evidence of a shamanic culture existing in early Asian civilization, and many shamanistic practices are believed to lie at the foundation of Chinese Medicine. By the sixth century B.C., the link between shamans and the medical practitioner was clear. Confucius is quoted as having said that “a man without persistence will never make a good shaman or a good physician”. Shaman - wu 巫 is a person who can mediate within the powers of nature. Shamans are viewed as bridges between natural and the spiritual world. Shamanism dates back to 40-100 thousand years ago, and is considered to be the oldest spiritual and healing practice known to humankind. Virtually all cultures around the world evolved from shamanic cultures. Most shamans begin their spiritual paths during a life-threatening illness, having started a spiritual journey and communication with the gods, spirits and ancestors which in return later become the source of their powers. After recovering from the illness, they go through a ceremonial practice of cleansing. Archaeological excavations have found records of the shamanistic use of divination dating back to Shang dynasty (c.1766 – c.1050 B.C.)... Link: https://www.meer.com/en/44155-shamanism-in-chinese-medicine Religious practice in ancient China dates back over 7,000 years ago. Long before the Confucius, Lao Zi and the Buddha got accepted and developed philosophical and spiritual teachings, the people believed, developed and worshipped personifications of nature and concepts like "wealth" or "fortune" which eventually developed into a religion. Such thoughts and beliefs still influence religious practices today. Evidence suggests Chinese mythological symbolism from the 12th century BC carved in the Oracle bone scripts. Legend of creation were passing down for over a thousand years before was written in books such as Classic of Mountains and Seas 山海經 (4 BC - 2 BC). The first writer to record the myth of Pangu was Xu Zheng 徐整 during the Three Kingdoms period (220 – 280 AD). Pangu 盘古 was the first God – Creator, equivalent to concept of God found in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Pangu is creator and founder of the Heavens and the Earth. Creation story goes as follow: In the beginning of time, there was nothing in the universe except a formless chaos. This chaos coalesced into a black cosmic egg for about 18,000 years. Within it, Pangu was born inside of this egg, and the perfectly opposed principles of Yin and Yang became balanced. Having been realized he was trapped within it, Pangu woke up from the egg. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Thoughts on the Alignment Implications of Scaling Language Models, published by leogao on the AI Alignment Forum. [Epistemic status: slightly rambly, mostly personal intuition and opinion that will probably be experimentally proven wrong within a year considering how fast stuff moves in this field] This post is also available on my personal blog. Thanks to Gwern Branwen, Steven Byrnes, Dan Hendrycks, Connor Leahy, Adam Shimi, Kyle and Laria for the insightful discussions and feedback. Background By now, most of you have probably heard about GPT-3 and what it does. There's been a bunch of different opinions on what it means for alignment, and this post is yet another opinion from a slightly different perspective. Some background: I'm a part of EleutherAI, a decentralized research collective (read: glorified discord server - come join us on Discord for ML, alignment, and dank memes). We're best known for our ongoing effort to create a GPT-3-like large language model, and so we have a lot of experience working with transformer models and looking at scaling laws, but we also take alignment very seriously and spend a lot of time thinking about it (see here for an explanation of why we believe releasing a large language model is good for safety). The inspiration for writing this document came out of the realization that there's a lot of tacit knowledge and intuitions about scaling and LMs that's being siloed in our minds that other alignment people might not know about, and so we should try to get that out there. (That being said, the contents of this post are of course only my personal intuitions at this particular moment in time and are definitely not representative of the views of all EleutherAI members.) I also want to lay out some potential topics for future research that might be fruitful. By the way, I did consider that the scaling laws implications might be an infohazard, but I think that ship sailed the moment the GPT-3 paper went live, and since we've already been in a race for parameters for some time (see: Megatron-LM, Turing-NLG, Switch Transformer, PanGu-α/盘古α, HyperCLOVA, Wudao/悟道 2.0, among others), I don't really think this post is causing any non-negligible amount of desire for scaling. Why scaling LMs might lead to Transformative AI Why natural language as a medium First, we need to look at why a perfect LM could in theory be Transformative AI. Language is an extremely good medium for representing complex, abstract concepts compactly and with little noise. Natural language seems like a very efficient medium for this; images, for example, are much less compact and don't have as strong an intrinsic bias towards the types of abstractions we tend to draw in the world. This is not to say that we shouldn't include images at all, though, just that natural language should be the focus. Since text is so flexible and good at being entangled with all sorts of things in the world, to be able to model text perfectly, it seems that you'd have to model all the processes in the world that are causally responsible for the text, to the “resolution” necessary for the model to be totally indistinguishable from the distribution of real text. For more intuition along this line, the excellent post Methods of prompt programming explores, among other ideas closely related to the ideas in this post, a bunch of ways that reality is entangled with the textual universe: A novel may attempt to represent psychological states with arbitrarily fidelity, and scientific publications describe models of reality on all levels of abstraction. [...] A system which predicts the dynamics of language to arbitrary accuracy does require a theory of mind(s) and a theory of the worlds in which the minds are embedded. The dynamics of language do not float free from cultural, psychological, or physical...

Wer Spoiler vermeiden will, sollte 30:21 bis 39:49 überspringen.

Always Put the People FirstThe people are the creators of history. The people are the true heroes. The magnificent history of the Chinese nation has been writ-ten by the Chinese people. The extensive and profound Chinese civilization has been created by the Chinese people. The spirit of the Chinese nation, kept fresh and alive throughout history, has been cultivated by the Chinese people. The endeavor of the Chinese people has led to a tremendous transformation of the Chinese nation: It has stood up, become better off and grown in strength. The character and endowment of the Chinese people have fostered the Chinese civilization over thousands of years. They have also exerted a far-reaching influence on the development of China and on the ethos of today's Chinese. The great national spirit, fostered, passed down, and developed by the Chinese people during their long struggle, has provided a strong impetus for the betterment of China and humanity.–The Chinese people are highly creative. Throughout thousands of years of history, they have always been ready to labor, to innovate, and to create with diligence. Our country has been the birthplace of world-renowned thinkers such as Lao Zi, Confucius,Zhuang Zi, Mencius, Mo Zi, Sun Zi and Han Fei Zi.The Chinese people's great scientific achievements such as papermaking, gunpowder, printing, and the compass have profoundly influenced the progress of human civilization. We created such great literary works as the Book of Songs,Songs of Chu,fu poetry of the Han Dynasty(206 BC-AD 220), poetry of the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, operas of the Yuan Dynasty(1206-1368)and the novels of the Ming(1368-1644)and Qing (1616-1911) dynasties. We have passed down the powerful epics King Gesar,Manas and Jangar. We have built mighty projects – the Great Wall, the Dujiangyan flood control and irrigation system, the Grand Canal, the Forbidden City, and the Potala Palace.Today, the creativity of the Chinese people is being unleashed to an extent never seen before, which is enabling our country to develop rapidly and stride forward at the forefront of the world. I am confident that as long as 1.3 billion Chinese people continue to demonstrate such great creativity, we will continue to create more miracles.–The Chinese people are people with a great spirit of endeavor. Over thousands of years, they have been able to discard the outdated and bring in the new. Our pursuit of progress has never paused. We have developed and built an immense and beautiful country, and explored vast expanses of territorial seas. We have opened up extensive and productive farmland, harnessed numerous turbulent rivers, and overcome countless natural disasters. We have built towns and villages dotted all over the country and developed a complete range of industries. Our lives are varied and colorful. The Chinese people have been well aware since ancient times that we cannot sit idle and enjoy the fruits of others' work, and that happiness can only be achieved through great endeavor. What the Chinese people have achieved stems from ingenuity and expertise, hard work, and enormous sacrifice. I believe, as long as all the Chinese people uphold this mighty spirit of endeavor, we will fulfill the great goal of creating a better life.–The Chinese people are people with a great spirit of unity. Over thousands of years, they have remained united and stuck together through thick and thin. We have built a united multiethnic country, and developed harmonious relationships between 56 diverse but closely interwovenethnic groups; we have formed one great Chinese family where all care for and help each other. Especially in modern times, confronted by aggressive and pitiless foreign occupation, all ethnic groups have joined to create a magnificent epic of defending the Chinese nation against external aggression. They have stood shoulder to shoulder and fought heroically and relentlessly, defeating every malicious invader and safeguarding national independence and freedom.China today, with all ethnic groups striving with one heart, has achieved extraordinary successes. The Chinese people have learned from our own experiences that only when we are united can we be strong and march forward. A divided country will not prosper. I believe as long as all the Chinese people uphold the spirit of unity, we will forge an unstoppable and invincible force.–The Chinese people are people with a great spirit of dreams. Over a history of thousands of years, they have held fast to their dreams and persevered in pursuing their goals. We have formed the ideal of living in prosperity, but also aspiring for the common good.Ancient Chinese mythologies, such as Pangu creating the world, Nüwa patching up the sky, Fuxi drawing the eight diagrams, Shennongtesting herbs, Kuafu chasing the sun, Jingwei filling up the sea, and Yugong removing mountains, reflect our determination in dauntlessly pursuing and realizing dreams. It is our firm belief that no matter how high a mountain is, if we keep climbing, we will reach the top; no matter how long a road is, if we keep walking, we will reach the destination.Since the modern era began, to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation has become the greatest dream of the Chinese nation. Chinese people never yield to reverses, and they stand firm and indomitable. With the spirit of fighting the enemy tothe end, the resolve of recovering the lost on the basis of self-reliance, and the ability to stand firm among the community of nations, the Chinese people have made continuous efforts for more than 170 years to fulfill their great dreams.Today, more than ever before, we are closer to, more confident of, and more capable of making the goal of national rejuvenation a reality. Once there was nothing in the universe, not even the sun, the moon, and the stars. Then Pwanku, the Chinese God of Creation hatched from chaos like a chicken hatching from an egg. Pwanku is also known as Pan Gu or Pangu. This Chinese creation tale was collected by Rachel Mary Fleming who published a selection of myths and tales from around the world in 1922. A Chinese tale of creation presented in premium audio by Fairytalez.com. No ads! Just story. If you want to learn more about creation myths from around the world, check out the rest of our Creation Tales podcast and subscribe to the Fairytalez channel to listen to every episode we publish for our shows.

MVG returns for another episode of ModChat, this time with even more emulation! We look into the recent release of RetroArch 1.7.5, with this having an official port to Switch as opposed to RetroNX. We also discuss the initial tease of RetroArch coming out on... PS2?! And of course we can't forget Nintendo's official NES emulator on the Switch now getting cracked open to play your own choice of NES games. In terms of Jailbreak news we also look into the PS3 getting an update which patches PS3Xploit on the latest firmware, a PS4 reseller sued for preloading and selling PS4 consoles with pirated games, and even iOS gets some love! Pangu has announced that they've Jailbroken iOS 12 on the iPhone XS, so look forward to Paranoid Coder's thoughts on it with his recent switch from a Pixel 2 to the iPhone XS.
On this week's Podcast, we talk about Ethan and Stacy Sloop, the Chinese creation myth of Pangu, and Cursed Music.

The latest episode of the transformers movie has finally hit the theaters here in China this morning. However fans have given out mixed reaction after the movie first shown to the public earlier this morning. Various Chinese elements, especially ads planted in the movie, are especially a focus. "There are so many Chinese elements appearing in the film that I doubt it specially caters to the Chinese audiences." "I'm ok with ads in the film. I noticed there was Chinese brand like Chuanqi electric bike. Pangu Seven Star Hotel is also featured in the film. It's said that it cost them 20 million yuan for this two minute appearance in the film." Though how much Pangu invest in the movie is yet to be disclosed, it was a fact that Pangu abruptly canceled their sponsorship of the movie last Friday. Disputes were solved hours before the movie was premiered in Beijing earlier this week. Like its predecessors, the film is directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
