The Death of Robin Hood is Pat Scola's third film with Michael Sarnoski, made an hour outside Belfast on a production budget of around eleven million, somewhere between the scrappiness of Pig and the scale of A Quiet Place: Day One. Sarnoski wanted grit, and Scola is precise about the word. He does not mean film grain. "Grit comes from restraint and control," he says, and a large part of the job now is "the choices you decide not to make." The fight in the mud, Robin and a peasant trying to drown each other, was conceived as a oner so the viewer would be stuck inside the brutality with no cut to hide behind. The film opens in 2.39 anamorphic for the myth of Robin, and across his wounded transfer to the priory the mattes open to 1.66, invisibly.His rule for lighting is that it should not feel lit. The keeper from a firelight test in prep was a rig the gaffer called the Dalek, a sheet of plywood carrying twenty-odd 500 watt clear bulbs, driven by fire footage so the light moves the way a real fire's does. Where real fire could carry a scene, it did. The scene of Bill Skarsgard's character washing his dead wife is a single fireplace and the only roll in the picture that was pushed. The final scene was shot on Kodak's new stock, so new it was still called SO55 and had no official rating. He is equally frank about fear. After day two he called his wife and told her he should never have shot the film on film, that it looked terrible, and that was the day whose dailies held the first shot of Jodie Comer at the window in blue. It's been about a week since the city of St. Paul cleared a homeless encampment at Pig's Eye Park near the Mississippi River. An estimated one to two hundred people were living there. Now that it's closed, many former residents are now staying in another encampment a few miles upriver. The city has said it also plans to clear that encampment, plus one other in St. Paul, in the coming months. It hasn't set a timeline for those closures. A spokesperson said the city is doing an after-action review of the first one and considering its next steps. Nurse practitioner Kat Donnelly is trying to stay connected with patients who have been staying in encampments in St. Paul. She joined MPR News host Nina Moini to share perspective on the situation.

Homeless outreach workers are continuing to visit a homeless encampment in St. Paul Tuesday, in hopes of transitioning residents there into shelters. The city plans to clear the encampment in Pig's Eye Park Wednesday evening.The city will hold a special public hearing at noon Tuesday to continue hearing from constituents. The plan has faced fierce opposition. City leaders say the closure is needed after an increase in emergency calls to the encampment.Minnesota water systems have blocked multiple hacking attempts since a cyberattack last week. That attack temporarily took some local water systems offline and prompted officials to review their cybersecurity measures. Minnesota was one of seven states that reported attacks on water systems. Officials have not identified who was behind it, but the New York Times reports investigators suspect Iran.Minneapolis Community Safety Commissioner Todd Barnette has agreed to continue to serve in his post until the end of the year as the city searches for his replacement. Barnette has served for one three-year term as commissioner for the office of community safety, which was created in 2022 and oversees police, fire and neighborhood safety.Mayor Jacob Frey nominated Barnette to a second term this spring, but the Minneapolis City Council twice rejected his nomination. Council members cited the slow pace of police reform in the city and almost $20 million in police budget overruns last year.The Republican-endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate is not being allowed to take part in a candidate forum at this week's Farmfest. Former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze is not among the candidates on the list for the Senate forum Wednesday. The current lineup includes four other candidates — two Democrats and two Republicans. The annual agriculture industry event kicks off Tuesday in Redwood County in southern Minnesota. City officials say St. Paul is investing $1 million into additional housing, but there isn‘t enough housing to immediately shelter those who will be displaced this week.Small business owners in northeastern Minnesota told their state legislators Friday that the wildfires that have been burning in and around the Boundary Waters for almost a month now, are having a “disastrous” impact on their bottom lines. One canoe outfitter says he lost 98 percent of his revenue in July due to cancellations. Other business owners said they've suffered losses of at least 40 percent, and for some it's much more as the wildfires shut almost everything down during the peak of a relatively short tourism season.80 workers are to be laid off as Pearson's Candy Company closes its St. Paul facility in September. The company is famous for its Salted Nut Rolls and Nut Goodies. The company is over 100 years old. It started as a family business, but has changed owners three times in the past 15 years.A new law took effect Saturday aimed at decreasing food waste and boosting food shelf inventory. Minnesota law says stores can't sell eggs past their quality assurance date, which is four to six weeks after the egg was packed. But those eggs can still be safe to eat. Republican Rep. On Wednesday, the St. Paul city council will hold a public hearing on plans to clear homeless encampments starting in August. Mayor Kaohly Her recently announced her office is working with the county to close three encampments due to public health and safety concerns. The city says around 120 people are staying at the largest of these sites, which is in Pig's Eye Park near the Mississippi River. Advocates estimate there are 400 people between all three encampments. The city plans to close that encampment on Aug. 5. The council has received more than 100 written comments, mostly urging the city to halt its plans. Justin Lewandowski is among those asking for a pause. He's director of Open Hands Midway, which provides free meals, groceries and supplies to community members. He shared more about his concerns on Minnesota Now.

Damage assessment and cleanup continues in Mower County after the second round of flash flooding there in a week. Parts of the county, including Austin, Adams and LeRoy, received around a half-foot of rain Wednesday. The flooding swamped streets and highways and sent water into basements. The sheriff's office said it had to rescue some people from their homes.St. Paul plans to close homeless encampments throughout the city, citing public health and safety concerns. The first closure will be the encampment at Pig's Eye Park near the Mississippi River on August 5. After that, other encampments will be closed on a rolling basis. Mayor Kaohly Her says the city has been working with partners to help encampment residents transition to safer, more stable housing.The Minneapolis City Council is considering a 75-day pilot program that would have police fly drones to 911 calls. Police leaders say drones will save time and give officers information before they respond to calls. Dozens of residents expressed opposition to the proposal at a public hearing Wednesday. MPD says the program would be designed to comply with the state Department of Human Rights consent decree.Striking Chisago County workers say residents are beginning to feel the effects of delayed services. A union representative says people have come directly to the picket line looking for county staff, including social workers and septic inspectors. Union members voted overwhelmingly to continue the strike. The two sides were scheduled to return to mediation Thursday.The Minnesota State Fair has released this year's list of new foods and vendors. The new foods include savory pickle pie with ranch-and-hot-sauce frosting, cheese curds rolled into lumpia and a Hmong corndog from Union Hmong Kitchen made in collaboration with Kramarczuk's. Nine new vendors are joining the fair this year. The State Fair runs from August 27 through September 7.The weather across Minnesota will be relatively quiet over the next few days, but another heat dome is developing over the upper Midwest. After more typical temperatures Thursday and Friday, the weekend will bring more heat. Highs could reach 90 degrees as early as Saturday, with 90s likely Sunday into much of next week. Heat index values could reach the 95 to 102 degree range.
