53. Ghost Towns of Wisconsin

Badger Bizarre

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2025 131:22

Wisconsin was home to many towns throughout its history that, for various reasons, simply don't exist anymore. Whether bypassed by the railroad, faded away after a loss of industry, or disbanded by its own residents, the towns have been wiped from the modern-day landscape, some with visible ruins as reminders, and others have literally nothing existing other than stories. Those stories are largely unknown to most people today, but they are no less fascinating because of it. The unique history of Wisconsin is only further enriched when these stories are brought to light, including connections to America's Founding Fathers, European royalty, and even an eventual Presidential assassin. Scott and Mickey look at the history of some of our state's more interesting ghost towns, and what, other than legacy, still remains today.   In the opening banter, we discuss a new documentary about the Peshtigo Fire, and a certain town that a local media outlet called the "Most Haunted in Wisconsin."  All here, on episode 53 of Badger Bizarre: "Ghost Towns of Wisconsin."    Facebook Twitter Website Email us:  badgerbizarre@outlook.com   Opening Trailer: Ed Gein Sound Byte : "Hard Copy" - Paramount Domestic/CBS Televsion Frank Lloyd Wright and Jeffery Dahmer Sound Byte - WISN 12 News - Milwaukee, WI Jeffery Dahmer Quotes: "Inside Edition"  - King World/CBS Television/CBS Media     Attribution for Music: Trailer: Composer: Adam Phillip Zwirchmayr https://www.pond5.com/ Intro: https://pixabay.com/ Outro: Composer: Viacheslav Sarancha  https://www.pond5.com/     Attribution for logo design: Red Claw Scratch Photo   Sources:   Bale, Florence Gratiot: "When the Gratiots Came to Galena" Bulman, LeeAnne "Back Roads of Wisconsin's Past" New North (Rhinelander) - Archives Parker, Marjorie: "Miners, Mothers, or Medicaine Workers?" Georgia Allen, 70, remembers growing up during segregation in Pleasant Ridge, a sleepy, agricultural community in southern Virginia Beach. Her family bought groceries at the local country store, where her parents suffered the indignities of white customers always being served ahead of them. But as a young girl, Allen wasn't aware of it because her mother would find ways to distract her during shopping trips. Before Allen walked to the counter with her chosen toy or candy, her mother would say, “Come here a minute, are you sure you want that?” “She would keep us busy, I ultimately realized later in life that you know, my mom was creative,” Allen said. “She was making sure we weren't experiencing it (racism) as much as other people.” Allen is now a civil rights activist and long time member of the Virginia Beach branch of the NAACP, having served as branch president from 2001 to 2012. In 2021, she was a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit that successfully changed the local election system in Virginia Beach after decades of underrepresentation for the city's Black residents. In most cities, people living within voting districts elect city council members from within their districts to represent them in local office. But Virginia Beach had a system in which council members must win elections citywide, instead of solely within their districts. This voting system prevented the election of candidates preferred by voters of color, plaintiffs argued. The city of Virginia Beach, created in 1963 by a merger between Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach, did not have its first Black city councilmember until 1986. Before the lawsuit, it had had only five Black city councilmembers in its history.

Chaos and comfort found a unique dance in the homes that raised me. Each house whispered a lesson, and through my tales of 11 childhood homes, I invite you to find solace in the symphony of life's imperfections. My story isn't just about the addresses that marked the chapters of a young girl's life; it's a celebration of resilience, a testament to the power of transformation, and a thank-you note to the chaos that taught me to create harmony in the discord. As we journey through the rooms of my past—from Burkart, where a tumble down the stairs met with my first taste of growing pains, to Pleasant Ridge, where my voice found its melody—I share with you the choreography of turning stumbling blocks into stepping stones. Together, we'll laugh, maybe shed a tear, and certainly cheer each other on as we embrace the disarray that shapes us. No expert guests, just us and my story, raw and unfiltered, encouraging you to dance through your own mess and find the beauty in the mayhem. Let's raise a glass to the homes that built us and the messes that made us.Support the showDid you enjoy today's episode? It's Tuesday, March 14th, A.D. 2023 which marks the 8th year anniversary of the airing of The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  This is Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson The menacing Muslims in Mozambique The African nation of Mozambique has turned into another hotbed for Christian persecution, reports International Christian Concern.  A violent, ISIS-affiliated Islamic group, known as the al-Sunnah wa Jama'ah, is raping, murdering, and pillaging villages in the area of Cabo Delgado.   At least 1,000,000 people have been displaced. According to a United Nations report, “There are hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people living in camps. Churches and schools have been burned as villages are attacked. And drug cartels continue to add violence to the ongoing extremism.” According to Open Doors, Mozambique is the 32nd most dangerous country in the world for Christians. American bank failures Two major banks failed over the weekend. Signature Bank and Silicon Valley Bank controlled deposits of about $280 billion. That compares to the largest bank failure in American history. Washington Mutual held $188 billion in deposits when it failed back in 2008. The U.S. federal government has assured depositors at the two failed banks that any deposits exceeding the $250,000 insurance limit will be covered by government funding. The Treasury Department set aside $25 billion to cover these losses. The Federal Reserve is also issuing more money, out of thin air, to reimburse depositors who lost savings in the bank closures. These are ostensibly loans for other banks short on funds to “meet the needs of all their depositors.”  We're not out of the woods yet on this. Bank stock prices tumbled yesterday. The shares of the San Francisco-based First Republic lost 64% of value yesterday, after a 33% decline last week. This major bank has in the neighborhood of $156 billion in deposits.  Gold up and silver down In the wake of the bank failures, gold spiked up about $100 to $1,912 per ounce, and silver scraped $22 per ounce. Remember Proverbs 23:4-5. It says, "Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward Heaven.” Death toll from earthquake soars to 48,448 The major earthquake that hit Turkey in February has now claimed 48,448 lives, according to Turkey's interior minister.  Another 6,000 perished in Syria. This has been the worst natural disaster worldwide in 13 years, since the Haitian earthquake of 2010.  Samaritan's Purse cared for 3,600 injured, provided shelter for 600 families Samaritan's Purse, the Christian relief group run by Evangelist Franklin Graham, announced they have cared for 3,600 patients injured in the earthquake over the last month. Plus, they have provided 600 shelter tents for families without homes.   Paul Carr from Samaritan's Purse gives us an update from the ground in Turkey. CARR: “Just four weeks ago, a 7.8 and a 7.5-earthquake hit this area and left three million people displaced. Through our partnership with First Hope Association, and with support of the Turkish government, today we're currently offloading the 100 tents which will be used as shelters for 100 families who are currently without shelter. “The people of Turkey are really hurting since this disaster. So, we just ask you to continue to keep them in your prayers.” You can make a donation to help fund the Christ-based efforts of Samaritan's Purse in Turkey and Syria through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Jesus Revolution movie made $40 million so far The film Jesus Revolution retained fourth place in the US Box Office over the last week, grossing $12,400,000 in receipts, for a total of $40,000,000 thus far. The film is a dramatic retelling of the Jesus Movement experienced at Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California in the early 1970s.  Watch the trailer and get tickets through special links in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Secular film, which celebrated perversion, won 6 Academy Awards By contrast, the film Everything, Everywhere at Once received the most accolades and awards at the dead and dying Academy Awards event over the weekend. A celebration of nihilism, meaninglessness, and sexual perversion, the film won six major awards including Best Picture. A small proportion of the nation is tuned into the Academy Awards show now -- only 18.7 million viewers, down from 55 million back in the early 2000s. Missouri pastor ran 153 consecutive marathons And finally, a Christian pastor from Missouri has broken the record for running consecutive marathons.   Malachi O'Brien, pastor of the Church at Pleasant Ridge, broke the Guinness World Record back on December 8th, after he ran 62 marathons on 62 consecutive days.  Well, last Wednesday, he rounded that out to 153 completed, consecutive marathons on March 8th. O'Brien told ChurchLeaders.com that his goal for running was to bring awareness to youth mental health, as well as adoption and foster care. So, “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2) Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, March 14th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. I've been following both of these guys for quite a while & they have consistently blown me away w/ what they've come up w/ over the years.  Their spaces are always so creative, well thought out, unique, the attention to detail is impeccable, & they really DO take you to another place for an experience you won't forget.  I appreciate them as a patron, I respect them as a hustler, & I admire them as Cincinnatian who loves his city. The takeaway is easy on this one & is right in line w/ what I'm trying to do w/ this podcast.  It's two-fold too.  The first is that they're telling stories.  Jacob has elaborate visions of venues that tell a story.  That story is one of the most important parts of what is ultimately created too. The second is that they are supporting local. Otto has an amazing ability to create physical spaces that match Jacob's vision but he also has pride in the workmanship he puts into them because he loves the areas they are investing in & he is well-aware of the positive impact he is having on those communities.  I record this podcast to hear & record people's stories & to support local businesses, so this was a great duo to have on as guests. I genuinely encourage you to make it a point to support these guys. Podcast Production: John Bl@zeTheme Music: "Farmers Name" by Highly LikelySponsor Music: "Grow" by Cory Christopher Beats

As I walk this lovely trail I reflect on my "old new strategy". This refers back to episode 70's "new strategy". At that time I was transitioning from a program of mostly walking to one of mostly strength training, with some evening cardio built in. My walks had lengthened to at a full five-point-screw-five miles, and I started only walking once every week or two. Meanwhile I would lift weights every weekday. That worked well for what I needed at the time. I built a lot of muscle in my first year of serious weight-lifting. But I was walking twelve miles a week at my slow pace. Weight 7-day Avg.
