Today's episode is an interview with Dr. Janan Sarwar. It's the first interview in a 4-part Women Pharmacist Writers Series. Janan is a pharmacist, publishing professional, medical grant writer, pharmacy career coach, and founder of Global Bookshelves International, LLC. She currently serves as the Chief Content Officer of The Happy PharmD as well as a Medical Resource Manager for Continuing Medical Education Outfitters, which is a division of Knowfully Learning Group. She is passionate about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and loves to speak and write about these topics. As a publisher, Janan spent 7 years working at the American Pharmacists Association working in nonprofit print and digital book publishing for pharmacists and she has now taken those skills to her new independent book publishing company that publishes children's books, healthcare content, and cookbooks that cultivate and celebrate diversity and representation from around the world. Janan found out about Medipreneurs from someone who worked with Medipreneurs Co-Founder Dr. Michelle Fritsch on her book Preventive Maintenance for a High Mileage Life (Kindle Version). How does Janan use her voice as an advocate? Janan advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from a healthcare perspective: research (clinical trials), underserved patients, marginalized patients, and also advocates children understanding diversity in terms of, “What is diversity?” DEI exists in many forms: age, gender, ethnicity, geography, physical ability, unseen abilities, and religious beliefs. Children learn from others. We can all learn from others. How did Janan learn about diversity in clinical trials? Janan looks at the patient population studied in a clinical trial compared to those in the real world who have the condition. Ex: Black women and breast cancer. Diversity may be affected by the ability to take time away from work, transportation, and other factors. Inclusion in trials can affect health beliefs, willingness to take medications, and openness with healthcare providers. Janan is writing a children's story about DEI. It's about baking cookies with her daughters. The sugar got left out of the cookie dough. After the cookies were baked, icing and sprinkles were used to sweeten the cookies. This is how Janan sees DEI in the world. Diversity is missing form the recipe. We need DEI in decision-making from the start. She thinks we are moving in the right direction with getting the sugar in from the start. Janan's career has been in book-publishing. She likes the idea of “windows” and “mirrors” in children's books. A window book lets us see something that's outside. Ex: fantasy, another culture, another world. A mirror book is something you read because you “see yourself” in it. Ex: an issue you're dealing with. A 2017 study showed that

Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts Spotify Amazon/Audible Read the full show notes at The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com/podcast Highlights from the interview Dr. Michelle Fritsch's Businesses: Retirement Wellness Strategies. Meds MASH has been wrapped into that. Medipreneurs PROPEL Comprehensive Wellness (coming soon!) Retirement Wellness Strategies came out of an identified need after years of practice. Michelle's background is geriatrics and academia. She wanted to work with patients in “early geriatrics:” age 55-70. She wants to help them define a plan for long-term health so that when they retire, those are fulfilled, active, vital years instead of having a big health decline and surviving. The health decline that occurs at retirement/upon reaching geriatrics is preventable. Why the name Meds MASH? “Meds” because she's a pharmacist. MASH stands for “Mature Adults Safe at Home.” Baby Boomers don't like labels, like “Mature” or “Geriatric,” but the literature says “geriatric” is >65 years old. Retirement Wellness Solutions is a planning process. Financial Planners and Estate Planning attorneys serve the same population. Don't call Michelle the day you retire. Call her years in advance to develop a strategy! A strategic plan includes the patient's long-term health in 4 key areas: purpose, activity, prevention, and health information. During our interview, Michelle told several success stories, including one about a client who was resistant to even the first 15-minute consultation. By the 5th visit, the length of the visit was 60 minutes, and the client looked forward to the discussions. Some clients have moved up their retirement because they are excited about how clear they can picture it and how it will be. They can't wait to get started! What are some challenges Michelle's clients face? Licensed professionals find it difficult to walk away from their credentials at retirement. Selling a business and walking away from it can be a big life event for business founders. Mental health is fragile for some executives who experience loneliness, despair, and anger when they retire. The suicide rate in the 55-75 age-range is rising. That may be preventable. More men than women in the 55-75 year-old age group commit suicide. The divorce rate among 55-75 year-olds is also going up. When couples talk before retirement about their differences and how they may have grown apart during their working years, it helps plan for the future. Who does Michelle work with? Michelle helps men and women. She loves helping couples who plan together. Her “why” comes from the experience of knowing that skilled executives retire to binge Netflix. If Michelle can instead influence them to use their passion, skills, knowledge, and influence for whatever excites them in what comes next, she has exponentially multiplied the impact that enhancing their health can have. Michelle wrote a book titled, “Preventive Maintenance for a High Mileage Life.” It's about strategically thinking about and managing your mental health, emotional health, spiritual health, and social health. You can find it on amazon.com. Medipreneurs was co-founded by Sue Paul, RPh; Anna Garrett, PharmD; and Michelle Fritsch, PharmD. They helped one another develop their businesses. Medipreneurs supports healthcare entrepreneurs who are pursuing their entrepreneurial passions. I have been to the 2018, 2019, and 2021 Medipreneurs Summits. I loved them all. The Founders and Summit participants helped me funnel my business ideas down to one. This year (2021), I got the idea for a side business. Entrepreneurs need coaches. Michelle started working with coaches when she worked in academia. As she has matured as an entrepreneur, her coaching needs have changed. She says, “You learn as you go.” Entrepreneurs are continuous learners. A challenge Michelle faces is that she can only help so many people one-on-one. 15,000 people turn 65 every day. There is a market filled with people who need to plan for the future! What's next for Michelle? PROPEL Comprehensive Wellness! Retirement Wellness Solutions has a one-on-one business model. Propel Comprehensive Wellness will be a “one-to-many” business model. Michelle's friend is an Aging Life Care Manager. She and Michelle created PROPEL Comprehensive Wellness together. Videos and workbooks will be launched in the next few months. PROPEL stands for Powerful Retirement Options for a Purpose-filled, Engaged Life. As of October 2021, Propel is not on the market yet. The Genius of What Isn't ThereJune 1, 2020 http://goodies.wizardacademypress.com/MMM20200601-GeniusOfWhatIsntThere.mp3 (Listen) https://www.mondaymorningmemo.com/heineken-beagle/ (A) Three friends, who have never met each other, all sent me the same advice last week. What makes this convergence particularly interesting is that there was no common trigger. Each of the three messages I received was prompted by something different. The essence of those messages? You've got to leave things out. Genius is rarely about what is there. Genius is about what isn't there. David Freeman is a world-famous coach of fictional character construction. His credentials and accomplishments are staggering. David read in my memo of May 18 that, “I am finally writing that screenplay I've been thinking and talking about for 15 years. It's a buddy movie about a guy with 12 friends. I plan to shoot it in New Orleans next year.” So he sent me an email from Hollywood. “If you're going to have 12 characters, the traditional wisdom is that 1, 2, 3, 4, and maybe 5 should be far more primary the others. The more characters we're supposed to know and care about, the less emotion the audience feels because we can't get deeply invested in any one character if our attention is split between too many. Characters require screen time for us to get emotionally involved with them. The more major characters, the less screen time for each.” According to David, a screenwriter has to choose which characters get fully realized. The others are effectively left out.Stephen Semple is a lifelong student of the sales process. He studies every aspect of persuasion, from advertising to lead generation to product demonstrations to sales presentations. Stephen wrote to me about how reading the transcripts of his Zoom conferences taught him how people speak differently than they write. “We repeat words, finish other people's sentences, and forget about grammar.” According to Stephen, when highly engaged in an inspired conversation, we leave out much of what we would have written.Tom Grimes is a scholar, a thinker, a philosopher and a friend, and the President Plenipotentiary of the Worldwide Worthless Bastards. Tom owns a booming business, but he is always available to take your phone call or respond to your email. So I asked him what he does all day. Tom replied, “Famous ‘leaders' are often very noisy people… or they were dealing with a crisis. We sometimes think leadership is about dealing with the aftermath when the sh#t hits the fan. We fail to appreciate that the real objective is to never let the sh#t hit the fan in the first place. One time I was at the water treatment facility of a large manufacturing plant. The place was eerily quiet. When I made the observation that it looked like the staff was doing next to nothing, the head operator explained that the secret to running a facility like his was a stringent Preventive Maintenance program. He said that if you see people running around it meant there was a problem. And the objective of the maintenance team was to prevent problems before they became problems. A quiet place was the sign of a well-run operation.” According to Tom, the secret of being a great leader is to leave out the emergencies. When asked the secret of writing bestselling novels, Elmore Leonard said, “I leave out the parts that people skip.” Impressionistic painters leave out the details, requiring us to supply them from our storehouses of imagination. Talented photographers leave out sections of what they photograph, requiring us to imagine the parts that extend beyond the framelines. When writing ads, if you try to appeal to everyone, you will appeal to no one. You've got to choose who to lose. Indy Beagle has some great examples of this in the rabbit hole. He suggests that you hurry. The rabbit is afoot. The adventure has begun. Roy H. Williams

[spp-player] WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK [spp-timestamp time="1:09"] We just returned from a great experience at the Owner's Academy, held last week for three days by Roadtrek and the Erwin Hymer Group of North America's headquarters in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. We were there to talk about our style of Serendipity Travel but we found the presentations by the factory staff so helpful that not only did we stuck around and listen but we did this week's podcast interview on the preventative maintenance tips we learned. It really was a lot of fun. People came from all over North America and everyone left so much more confident about handling the preventative maintenance things they were taught. They are doing two more Owner's Academy this year and we look forward to attending them, too. Both, though, are sold out but based on the great reception to them I'm sure there will be others scheduled. When they are, we'll let you know as soon as we do. We've been working hard on videos these past few weeks. We have a whole bunch in the hopper and you can see new ones on our RV Lifestyle Channel on You Tube. New videos are released every Thursday morning. Best way to know about them is to go to the channel and subscribe. Then you can clock on a a bell icon and every time a new one is ready, you'll get an immediate notification. But we have travel videos coming, a review of a new cellular booster system we're trying out, RV model walk-throughs and all sorts of other surprises. Here's the RV News of the week… Colorado Wildlife officers using social media to track people who harass moose Colorado wildlife officers are using social media to help them track down people who take pictures of themselves standing near and otherwise harassing moose. The desire to take a selfie near wildlife has been a growing problem at national parks and federal lands throughout the country, putting the wildlife and people at risk. In Colorado officers are using pictures, posted on social media, to successfully track down wildlife harassers to either issue tickets or issue warnings. RVs on fire filled last week's news; Take steps to stay safe Last week's RV news was full of what felt like an unusual number of RV fire reports. There was the story of a fifth wheel trailer fire in Arizona that reportedly appeared to start near the refrigerator. A woman and her cats were inside an RV in Florida when it caught aflame, apparently because of an electrical problem. A trailer was being towed in North Carolina when it caught a blaze, cause not immediately known. In Virginia an RV was parked in the owner's driveway when it caught on fire, spreading to the owner's home. All of these stories, and a few others, got me thinking back to an interview we did last year for the podcast on fire safety with Mark Polk of RVEducation101.com. Folks, it is important to do everything you can to stay safe. Click here to review that conversation and hear Mark's helpful safety tips.
