We've reached that point in the gardening year where people have more plants than space in the garden. So, out come the pots that have been sitting behind the garage! Which brings up a perennially popular question: can you reuse old potting soil successfully? America's Favorite Retired College Horticulture Professor, Debbie Flower, says, yes, you can…if you take certain precautions. She has tips for reusing that old potting soil. Would you like to grow paw paws? It's a southern U.S. favorite, but it is also known as the Michigan Banana. It's worth a try everywhere. There are more than 5,000 active submarine volcanoes on Earth, all varying in size and eruption style. Studying the rocks formed at these underwater vents is necessary to understanding the explosiveness of future eruptions, some of which can even burst lava and ash out of the water's surface. As it turns out, the most explosive ones are spewing pink pumice, and exactly how pink they are is a crucial detail. Billions of plants are produced and grown in shallow-drained container soils, including containers (pots, flats, planters, greenhouse benches), the shallowness induces capillary retention of too much water (high concentration) which displaces soil air and causes poor soil aeration.

We don't want to say this episode is dense... but it's certainly heavier than our preferred well-draining potting mixes. You can't say we didn't warn you! We set out to understand the semantic differences between dirt, soil, and "all-purpose potting mix," picking apart the various components like peat, perlite, coir, charcoal, and - screw it, we just call our friend Miles, who had a few surprises - even for us. Is this potting substrate so simple that it's actually the most complex of all?
One of the country's most expensive stretches of new highway just got more costly - and further delayed - by buried pumice that engineers failed to spot. The two kilometre stretch of the Bayfair to Baypark upgrade on State Highway 2 south of Tauranga was already costing more than $70 million a kilometre. But the ground isn't stable enough and that's forced a major design change. Phil Pennington is looking into this

In last week’s post, I shared a simple method for working with your crystals to uncover the deeper energies and meanings of the 22 Major Arcana cards in the Tarot. This week, we’ll be diving into the remaining 56 cards in the Tarot deck, known as the Minor Arcana. These Minor cards add perspective to what is happening in your everyday life. The cards in the Minor Arcana are divided into four suits. Each suit represents a different aspect of your life and corresponds to one of the four elements: Water Element: Cups (also known as Chalices) Fire Element: Wands (also known as Rods, Staffs, or Staves) Air Element: Swords (also known as Daggers) Earth Element: Pentacles (also known as Coins or Discs) Each suit is then made up of numbered cards (Ace through Ten) and Court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, and King). Each number has its own meaning within the suits, giving you a deeper understanding of what the cards are telling you. In general, the Even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) reveal that there is balance and harmony in your life whereas odd numbers (1/Ace, 3, 5, 7, and 9) represent obstacles or challenges you may face (think of these as opportunities for growth). To dive deep into the Tarot Minor Arcana, you can work with your crystals to help you uncover even more about the meaning of each card. To do this, you’ll need a deck of tarot cards and a crystal to represent each element (that’s four crystals in total). I’ve listed some of my favorite elemental crystals here below. Earth: Petrified Wood, Anthracite, Malachite, Carnelian, Red Jasper, Emerald, Rainforest Jasper, Chrysocolla, Serpentine, Agate (all types), and Peridot Air: Celestite, Pumice, Azurite, Blue Apatite, Lepidolite, Turquoise, Blue Kyanite, Blue Sapphire, Angelite, and Mica Fire: Amber, Rhodochrosite, Ruby, Lava Rock, Fire Agate, Red Spinel, Citrine, Diamond, Heliodor, Obsidian, and Clear Quartz Water: Amethyst, Boulder Opal, Larimar, White Calcite, Pearl, Blue Lace Agate, Amazonite, Aquamarine, Moonstone, Selenite, and Blue Tourmaline To begin this process, separate out the Major Arcana (0-21) cards from your Tarot deck and set them aside, leaving only the 56 Minor Arcana Cards. Choose just one of these Minor Arcana cards that you’d like to explore in-depth. Place it in front of you (on your altar, or on the floor or a table in your sacred space). Reach for your corresponding elemental crystal. For example, Aquamarine for Cups and the Water element or Malachite for Pentacles and the Earth element. You might also like to have other representations of these elements on your altar or in your sacred space for this process. Bringing the Elements Into Your Sacred Space: Earth: fresh flowers, a dish of sand or soil, crystals or fossils, wood carvings, fruit, seeds, an image or statue of a land animal. Air: feathers, incense, lace, athame (or small dagger), windchimes, bell, a hand fan, a flute, an image or statue of a bird. Fire: candles, a lantern, a cauldron, an image or statue of a dragon, salamander, or phoenix Water: a small dish of water, a fountain, seashells (especially an Abalone shell), a chalice or goblet, a mirror, an image or statue of a mermaid or dolphin. Hold the stone in cupped hands above the Tarot card. Ask that the stone help provide you with more clarity about the meaning of this card. Close your eyes and breathe deeply while holding the stone in your hands. To truly embody the vibration of the card, take the number of breaths equal to the number of your card. For example, three deep breaths for the 3 of Wands, or six deep breaths for the 6 of Swords. Breathe in the elemental energy of the crystal in your hands as you do this. If you chose to work with a Court card, use your intuition to guide you on the correct number of breaths. After your final exhalation, open your eyes and immediately look at the card. Do this while still holding your stone.

Stores Like Wal-Mart Are Entering the Gun Control Debate (0:38)Guest: Adam Winkler, J.D., Professor of Law, UCLA. Author of Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in AmericaAs the coronavirus began to spread widely in the US last month, sales of guns and ammunition made a big jump. People appeared to be stocking up for fear the pandemic would lead to civil unrest. Typically, we see sales skyrocket like this when gun owners are worried about new laws being passed. There was a similar bump after President Obama got elected and another after the Sandy Hook shooting. But the reality is that it's been 25 years since Congress passed laws that limit the spread and use of guns. In the meantime, we've seen private companies taking up the cause - Walmart, Target, Starbucks, Chipotle, and Costco have all discouraged customers from openly carrying guns in their stores. People use it to smooth off callouses on feet. Well last fall, a giant clump of it was discovered floating in the Pacific Ocean. It was bigger than the island of Manhattan, made up of pumice stones ranging from marble to basketball size. Really bad news for boats that came upon it, but great news for marine life, apparently. Most likely it was for some sort of medication or they were sitting on a park bench alone. Research from the AARP shows that older people are usually depicted in the media as dependent and disconnected. And that just doesn't line up with the facts. (Originally aired 10/29/19) What You Need to Know About the WHO (50:39)Guest: Eric Jensen, JD, Professor of International Law, Brigham Young UniversityPresident Trump is so unhappy with how the World Health Organization has handled the COVID-19 pandemic that this week, we stopped US funding for it. Many have criticized the WHO for not pushing harder for fast, accurate information about the virus as it emerged in China. The WHO also did not recommend global travel restrictions as quickly as might have been appropriate in hindsight. (1:02:42)Guest: Jean-Pierre Isbouts, PhD, Art Historian and Doctoral Professor at Fielding Graduate University. Christopher Brown, DDS, Director of Brown Discoveries, LLC, Co-Authors of “The Da Vinci Legacy: How an Elusive 16th Century Artist Became a Global Pop Icon”It's been more than 500 years since the death of Leonardo da Vinci. The Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, his incredibly detailed human anatomy sketches and his early invention of the bicycle and the parachute make him perhaps the most celebrated artist of all time. But when he died in the summer of 1519, he was not famous. In fact, he was something of a failure by Italian Renaissance standards and was living in exile in France. His burial site went forgotten for centuries. So why is he so famous today? (Originally aired 8/5/2019)

In this episode I dissect three methods of exfoliating the skin: physical, mechanical and chemical. The accumulation of keratinized dead skin cells is the reason why skin can look lackluster, even while wearing your favorite foundation. When these dead cells are sloughed away, the skin is left with the optimal surface for the foundation magic to occur! The problem is, not all methods of exfoliation are for every individual; the question is, what method will work best for you? In this episode, I mention "Twinkle Brow Shaver Razors", "Mr Pumice coarse Pumi Bar" and "Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream"

How Hunger Impacted German Civilians During and After WWI Guest: Mary Cox, William Golding Junior Research Fellow in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Brasenose College, Oxford UniversityThe First World War was among the deadliest in history. Tens of millions of soldiers and civilians died. Millions more were maimed or emotionally scarred by the brutal fighting in the trenches and use of chemical weapons. Lingering effects of the Great War were also evident in the bodies of German children, who were malnourished throughout the conflict because of a very effective Allied blockade that kept food, fertilizer and military supplies out of Germany. Your hosts: Erik Klemetti and Janine KrippnerWe banter about pumice rafts and why they're so cool, why bad Op-Eds in newspapers about volcanoes are not cool, the dangers of pyroclastic flows moving over water and the recent global eruption activity. We then dive into answering listener questions, including how volcanoes get names, whether there is a set pattern to volcanic activity over a volcano's life, what is the most hazardous volcano in the U.S., why anorthosite are weird and why never nuke a volcano (or hurricane).Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/popularvolcanics)

Last week, a Royal New Zealand Air Force flight spotted a new pumice raft in the middle of the Pacific ocean to the west of Tonga. Pumice rafts are floating islands of pumice created during a submarine volcanic eruption and they can persist for months or longer. This raft was seen by aircraft and satellite in an area with no known volcanoes. However, from the looks of the raft, it might be a long way from home.

This Wednesday Pro Tip comes to us courtesy of Giuseppe! It's using pumice as a base layer in your substrate and it makes a lot of sense. If your aquascape calls for a thick substrate and you're wallet is starting to hurt because it's going to cost a lot to use 100% expensive substrate, think about using a base layer of pumice to build it up. Then cover this layer with the substrate of choice. This is a great idea because: 1. Saving money because it's cheap and easy to get. 2. It creates a great environment for the microbes that are necessary in the substrate It doesn't have to be pumice. You can also use ceramic rings like the ones you put in filters. Really almost anything that's inert will work. Thanks, Guiseppe! If you have a tip that you want to share with your fellow hobbyists, pay it forward and send it to us at feedback@scapefu.com. We'll share it with the world! If you like what you heard, please subscribe to the ScapeFu Podcast. It's free and easy. All you need to do is use iTunes or Stitcher on Android
