Welcome to the 80th episode of the Decode Quantum podcast series. We are this time with Chris Langer from Quantinuum. This is one of the leading companies using trapped ions for the creation of quantum computers. Our guest Chris Langer is a Fellow at Quantinuum. He is their chair of the Technical Board and an advisor to the President and COO. Chris has a PhD in physics obtained in 2006 at the University of Colorado on trapped ions quantum computing under the supervision of David Wineland, Nobel laureate in physics in 2012, who was a guest of this very podcast in July 2024. Chris is a key contributor to the development of Quantinuum's hardware. Before joining Quantinuum (which was then initially Honeywell Quantum Systems) in 2016, Chris worked for 10 years at Lockheed Martin on various projects in the aerospace domain.

Welcome to the 75th episode of the Decode Quantum podcast. In our series of three episodes recorded in Lindau where dozens of physics Nobel laureates were gathered with young scientists, we had a chance to meet David Wineland. This podcast was recorded on July 1st, 2024, in Lindau, Germany during the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.David Wineland is an American physicist currently at the University of Oregon who is specialized in atomic physics, and in particular, uses laser-cooled trapped ions to implement the elements of quantum-computing. He became a laureate of the Nobel prize in physics in 2012 along with Serge Haroche of Ecole Normale Supérieure and Collège de France, Paris. He received his PhD in physics from Harvard University in 1970 on a topic we'll see later in our discussion. He was then a post-doc at the University of Washington where he worked on electrons in ion traps. In 1975, he joined the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) where he created a group working on ion storage and was also an academic at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He and his colleagues were among the first {laser cooling was demonstrated at the same time by the group of Peter Toschek in Heidelberg} to laser-cool ions in 1978 and then demonstrated other optical techniques to control ions and implement the first two-qubit logic gate in 1995. He and colleagues also worked on the creation of the most precise atomic clock using quantum logic on a single aluminum ion in 2019. The 2005 experiment was the first demonstration of quantum-logic spectroscopy. The most precise quantum logic clock using an Al+ (aluminum) ion was demonstrated in 2019. The U.K.-based company specializes in quantum error correction technology, aiming to improve the reliability of quantum computers. This funding round adds to a successful year for quantum computing startups, which have collectively raised nearly $1.4 billion in over two dozen rounds, nearly doubling the $777 million raised last year. The fast-evolving quantum computing phenomenon represents a paradigm shift in how computers process data. Due to its ability to process vast amounts of data and solve complex problems at an unprecedented speed, quantum computing holds great promise for new material discovery through the simulation of physical systems, portfolio optimization in finance, and more. It also poses a significant threat to cybersecurity, requiring a change in how we encrypt our data. Even though quantum computers don't technically have the power to break most of the current forms of encryption yet, we need to stay ahead of the threat and come up with quantum-proof solutions now. If we wait until those powerful quantum computers start breaking our encryption, it will be too late. I had the pleasure of discussing the quantum computing phenomenon and its cybersecurity implications with Duncan Jones, Head of Cybersecurity, at Quantinuum. We discussed the potential threats and opportunities of quantum computing for cybersecurity, as well as its potential to revolutionize various industries. No 10. līdz 18. novembrim Vecrīgā, Kaļķu ielā 24, ar jaundarbu koncertprogrammu un meistarklasēm norisināsies telpiskās skaņas festivāls "Komplementārās pretrunas". Tas vienuviet pulcēs Latvijas un ārvalstu komponistus un zinātniekus, lai ar 36 skaļruņu palīdzību speciāli izveidotā daudzkanālu skaņas kupolā ļautu klausītājiem gūt jaunu skaņas uztveres pieredzi. Aptuveni stundu gari telpiskās skaņas koncerti notiks īpaši izveidotā telpiskās skaņas kupolā vairākas reizes dienā. "Latvijā samērā maz pazīstamais koncertformāts klausītājam ļaus piedzīvot skaņas pieredzi, ko nav iespējams īstenot citiem līdzekļiem. Festivāla izglītības programmas ietvaros pasaulslavenais laikmetīgās mūzikas komponists Eduardo Miranda pasniegs meistarklasi mūzikas kompozīcijas studentiem un publisko lekciju festivāla atklāšanas vakarā. Tāpat sadarbībā ar "QLatvia" tiek veidots ievadkurss kvantu skaitļošanā," teikts festivāla aprakstā. "Ar šo projektu mēs vēlamies iepazīstināt Rīgas iedzīvotājus ar laikmetīgas telpiskās mūzikas pieredzi, piedāvājot komponistu speciāli radītu skaņdarbu koncertprogrammu par kvantu fizikas konceptiem. Liela daļa aizrautīgi strādājuši kopā ar zinātniekiem, pat laboratorijās, lai izprastu kvantu fizikas procesus un ietērptu skanējumā. Ar ikgadēju festivālu vēlamies iedzīvināt Latvijas mūzikas ainavā samērā maz pazīstamu koncertmūzikas formātu - telpiskas elektroakustiskas mūzikas atskaņojumus," stāsta festivāla mākslinieciskais vadītājs Voldemārs Johansons. Ar viņu, kā arī komponisti Annu Fišeri, kuras mūzika skanēs šajā festivālā, plašākā sarunā tiekamies "Klasikā". Runājam par skaļruņu kupoliem, to vēsturi un arī to, kādas iespējas tie paver komponistiem un koncerta apmeklētājiem. Anna un Voldemārs pastāsta par saviem akusmātiskajiem darbiem, kurus dzirdēsim festivālā, un Voldemārs arī iepazīstina klausītājus ar festivāla galveno viesi, komponistu, pētnieku un novatorisku skaņu mākslinieku Eduardo Mirandu. Pirms 100 gadiem ievērojamais dāņu fiziķis Nīlss Bors saņēma Nobela prēmiju fizikā par ieguldījumu atomu struktūras izpētē. Viņa revolucionārais darbs lika pamatus kvantu mehānikai un noteica enerģijas kvantizācijas koncepciju atomā, kā arī izvirzīja komplementaritātes ideju, kas paredz, ka daļiņas, atkarībā no veida, kā tās tiek novērotas, uzrāda gan viļņiem, gan daļiņām atbilstošu uzvedību. Svinot šos atklājumus, Vizionārās kultūras fonds sadarbībā ar Dānijas kultūras institūtu un Nīlsa Bora Institūtu, iedzīvināja projektu "Komplementārās pretrunas", kura ietvaros mūzikas autori Anna Fišere (LV), Jacob Kirkegaard (DK) un Tie Yann (CN) iedvesmojās no kvantu zinātnes idejām un, konsultējoties ar kvantu fizikas pētniekiem no Nīlsa Bora institūta Kopenhāgenā, radīja jaunus skaņas darbus. 2023. gadā šo programmu paplašina latviešu autoru jaundarbi (Voldemārs Johansons, Linda Leimane), izveidojot dabaszinātnēm veltītu koncertprogrammu. Festivāla īpašais viesis ir komponists un vairāku nozīmīgu grāmatu autors Eduardo Reks Miranda (Eduardo Reck Miranda). Miranda ir eksperts vairākās mūsdienu mūzikas pētniecības disciplīnās, starp viņa publikācijām ir: "Quantum Computer Music:  Foundations, Methods and Advanced Concepts", "Handbook of Artificial Intelligence for Music: Foundations, Advanced Approaches, and Developments for Creativity". Mirandas pašreizējie pētījumi ir vērsti uz kvantu skaņu un kompozīciju, kas ietver kvantu skaitļošanu. Šajā virzienā viņš sadarbojas ar vadošajiem pētniecības uzņēmumiem šajā jomā: "Quantinuum" un "IBM". Viņa kompozīciju "Qubism" šovasar pirmatskaņoja "Londonas sinfonietta". Plašu interviju ar Eduardo Reku Mirandu "Klasika" piedāvās svētdienas rītā.  Festivālā izskanēs Annas Fišeres (Latvija), Jakoba Kirkegārda (Dānija), Tie Jannas (Ķīna), Eduardo Mirandas (Lielbritānija), Voldemāra Johansona un Lindas Leimanes (Latvija) jaundarbi. Uttley mentions several inflection points that shaped his career, including watching the movie "The Right Stuff" as a child and deciding he wanted to be an astronaut. He also talks about his time at Honeywell, where he led marketing and strategy for the company's Automation and Control Solutions division and worked with scientists on quantum computing. Uttley believes that there will be multiple technologies that continue to evolve in quantum computing, and that trapped ion technology has properties that make it superior to other technologies. It is the first in English and probably not the last one!Simone Severini is the Director in charge of Quantum Technologies at Amazon Web Services (AWS) since 2018. He also holds an academic appointment as a Professor of Physics of Information at University College London (UCL), where he has been since 2009. He contributed to initiate university-industry collaborations with enterprises like Google, Lockheed Martin, and Siemens. He helped co-founding startup like Phasecraft and Cambridge Quantum Computing (now Quantinuum). Simone got a PhD from the University of Bristol with Richard Jozsa in 2004 and a degree in Philosophy from the University of Florence. Simone is based in Seattle.
