In this episode of Mindful Creative Podcast, host Radim Malinic speaks with Emily Cohen and her daughter Hunter Vargas of Casa Davka, business consultants for creative professionals. They discuss how creative businesses can evolve and grow, focusing on the critical importance of relationship building over traditional "selling." Emily shares her journey from designer to consultant, while Hunter explains how she naturally found her way to the family business despite initially carving her own path. The conversation explores how creative business owners often struggle with business development, preferring to redesign websites or create marketing materials rather than building the personal relationships that truly drive business growth. Emily and Hunter emphasize that clients choose creative partners primarily because of relationships and trust ("building the love"), not just portfolios or pricing. They challenge common myths in the creative industry, particularly the idea that hiring salespeople is effective (it rarely works) and that business development brings immediate results (it typically takes two years from first meeting to becoming a client). The pair discusses how to help introverted creatives approach relationship building in ways that feel natural and authentic.Key takeaways Creative business owners should position themselves as business people first, designers secondEffective positioning requires identifying unique industry niches, services, and genuine differentiators"Building the love" through authentic relationships is more valuable than traditional sales approachesBusiness development is a daily habit that feeds the business engine continuouslyPatience is crucial - relationship building typically takes two years to convert contacts to clientsPrinciples/founders must do their own relationship building; salespeople rarely succeed in creative businessesCreatives should stop comparing themselves to others and focus on their unique strengthsDesigners should capture and communicate metrics and results, not just creative decisionsBeing ready for change is essential for creative businesses looking to evolveCreative business consultants should practice what they preach in their own business approach Mindful Creative: How to understand and deal with the highs and lows of creative life, career and business Paperback and Kindle > https://amzn.to/4biTwFcFree audiobook (with Audible trial) > https://geni.us/free-audiobookSigned books https://novemberuniverse.co.ukLux Coffee Co. https://luxcoffee.co.uk/ (Use: PODCAST for 15% off)November Universe https://novemberuniverse.co.uk (Use: PODCAST for 10% off)
"To reach these simple, remarkable ideas is sometimes also a bit of luck. In the process, you find something you can't really imagine." - Bjorn KussofskyIn this episode, Radim Malinic interviews Bjorn Kussofsky, founder of Stockholm Design Lab. Bjorn shares his journey from aspiring pop star to renowned designer, including the pivotal moment when Andy Warhol designed a record sleeve for his band. This experience influenced his decision to pursue design instead of music. Established in 1998, Stockholm Design Lab was founded with the vision of creating a multidisciplinary design company that could handle holistic branding. The studio now employs about 25 people and works with international clients on design and branding projects. Throughout the conversation, Bjorn emphasizes their philosophy of creating "simple, remarkable ideas" by reducing clutter and focusing on context. He discusses how they strive to create designs that stand the test of time, acknowledging that reaching simplicity requires both process and luck. Bjorn reflects on Scandinavian simplicity, noting that when it's truly effective, it goes beyond style to reveal the essence of something, often born from necessity and resource constraints. Despite growing his company, Bjorn remains deeply involved in the creative work rather than focusing on business aspects. The conversation explores notable projects including Polestar and the recent Sigma rebrand, showcasing how Stockholm Design Lab's approach to simplicity creates distinctive brand identities that resonate in cluttered marketplaces.Key takeaways:Staying relevant is crucial for design companies - creating impactful work in the present rather than relying on past achievementsThe philosophy of "simple, remarkable ideas" drives Stockholm Design Lab's approach to designFinding uniqueness in design is challenging - often it's the context that makes something feel newGreat design comes from a combination of strategic process and serendipitous discoveryEffective Scandinavian simplicity goes beyond aesthetics to truth - stripping away clutter to reveal essenceBjorn values finding and employing talented people as one of the most rewarding aspects of running a studioLogos should never be judged in isolation - they must be evaluated as part of a comprehensive brand systemPhysical artifacts like books serve as important time capsules for preserving design legacyLongevity is a measure of success in design - creating work that remains relevant for decadesThe Polestar project demonstrates how simplicity can create powerful differentiation in a cluttered marketplace Mindful Creative: How to understand and deal with the highs and lows of creative life, career and business Paperback and Kindle > https://amzn.to/4biTwFcFree audiobook (with Audible trial) > https://geni.us/free-audiobookSigned books https://novemberuniverse.co.ukLux Coffee Co. https://luxcoffee.co.uk/ (Use: PODCAST for 15% off)November Universe https://novemberuniverse.co.uk (Use: PODCAST for 10% off)

"When you give somebody freedom to roam, you never know what creativity you'll unlock. That freedom brings happiness and retains relationships." - Alex SuchetIn this episode, Radim Malinic interviews Alex Suchet, founder and CEO of Mystery Box, a digital production company. Alex shares his journey from TV production runner to agency owner, discussing how having successful family members inspired rather than pressured him. He introduces the "Red Car Theory" of opportunity - the idea that when we focus too narrowly on specific goals, we miss opportunities around us. Alex emphasizes the importance of freedom in creative work and building businesses, explaining how Mystery Box has thrived by being adaptable rather than rigid in its approach. He also discusses the challenges of imposter syndrome as an agency founder who wasn't previously a designer or developer himself, and how financial success provided validation but not happiness. Throughout the conversation, Alex highlights the value of authentic relationships with clients and team members, comparing business relationships to friendships that should develop organically rather than through aggressive marketing or social media.Key TakeawaysBeing exposed to successful people can either inspire you or create unhealthy pressure - Alex chose inspiration. The "Red Car Theory": If you only look for red things, you'll miss blue opportunities around you.Freedom leads to retention - in business, relationships, and creative teams.Financial success can provide validation but doesn't necessarily create happiness. The best client relationships come organically through quality work, not aggressive marketing.Creative businesses need flexibility to evolve with changing markets and technologies.Building a team requires different perspectives and skills - "a team full of Alex Suchets" wouldn't work.Success comes from being open to where opportunities take you, not rigidly following a predetermined path.Remote work models (which Mystery Box adopted in 2011) can be both efficient and fulfilling.Authenticity in relationships matters most - whether with clients, team members, or creative partners. "You have to be the first in line of your fan club. If you're not, I don't know how to like you. Because if you don't like you, why would I like you?" - Chris Do In this insightful conversation, Chris Do and Radim Malinic explore the intricacies of creative careers, personal growth, and the impact of environment on success. Chris shares his experiences as a first-generation immigrant and how it shaped his drive and ambition. They discuss the challenges of creative identity, the importance of self-acceptance, and the role of ego, ambition, anxiety, and insecurity in shaping a creative's journey. Chris emphasizes the value of articulating thoughts, the power of words, and the importance of embracing mistakes as learning opportunities. The conversation touches on topics such as the American Dream, the nature of success, and the concept of retirement for creatives.Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities rather than sources of regret. Regret is wishing to change the past, which creates negative energy.Your environment significantly impacts your ambition and success. The "fishbowl" you swim in shapes your perspective and goals. The four elements that can hold creatives back are ego, ambition, anxiety, and insecurity. Understanding and managing these can lead to personal growth.Articulating your thoughts and feelings, especially negative ones, can help release tension and reduce anxiety. "Your words shape your world."Success is often a journey, not a destination. Avoid comparing your beginning to someone else's end point. The concept of "retirement" may not apply to creatives who are passionate about their work. Finding joy in helping others can lead to a fulfilling career.Cultivate patience and give yourself grace. Success and skill development take time and consistent effort.Be the "first in line of your fan club." Self-confidence and self-acceptance are crucial for personal and professional growth.Understanding the power of autonomy in creative work can help prevent burnout and increase satisfaction.Continuously evolve your identity and focus on the journey rather than fixating on specific destinations or goals. Danielle interviewed Radim Malinic, Creative Director, Designer and best selling author. He lives and works in Southwest London and runs Brand Nu, a multidisciplinary award winning studio. Before finding his calling in the creative industry, Czech born Radim was an ice hockey player, a bassist in death metal bands, an indie DJ, music journalist and student of Economics and Business management. At the break of the new millennium he moved to the UK to explore the music scene, only to find even greater interest in art and graphic design. Since then his eclectic interests have seen him working with some of the biggest brands, companies and bands in the world. Clients include Harry Potter, London Film Museum, SyCo, Sprite, WWF and USAID amongst many othersKEY TAKEAWAYSMindfulness is important for Radim and he believes it's especially useful in the creative industries; creatives have set a level of perfectionism, which may not even be possible. As a result we don't always know when to stop. This is reflected in his book ‘The Mindful Creative'.Radim has always loved trying different things. We discuss his new book releases - Creativity for Sale and The second Mindful Creative. Both books aim to provide anyone with a proven and tested framework for finding success in their career and systems to avoid burnout and stress. BEST MOMENTS‘I think my life motto is seeing something I like and thinking how hard is it to do? Let's give it a go and see if I can get through that entry point. OK, we'll do it for a while, if it doesn't work I'll just see something else. And I think, as a human beings, we are the collection of experiences of wins, failures, inspirations and information'‘I can tell you 20 different ways we can avoid burnout yet people will go and burn out because we followed that passion and expression in us. But it's then realising, OK, I have made a mistake even though I knew it was coming. How do I get out of this? How do I recover? Because we underestimate recovery. We underestimate the impact of the problem because it takes you to recover as long as it took you to break yourself'‘I just liken it to like the highway of life and creativity. Imagine a 5 lane motorway and you've got the self-made, self certified millionaires bombing it in the in the fast lane in their little flashy cars and you're in a slip road going, I'm sort of happy here going 20 miles an hour in your bashed up Fiesta and this is my beginning'ABOUT THE HOST - DANIELLE CLARKEDanielle Clarke is a Brand Strategist and University Lecturer. Radim is also passionate about music and in the summer of 2015, released a 4 track EP, made with samples recorded in Uganda in collaboration with Black Marx. He has spoken at a number of conferences to outline his ideas about self development and the need for people to stay forever curious. He has recently released his fourth self published book, titled “Book of Ideas.” WARRIOR of Observation “It doesn't really matter how big your clients are or how big the work is that you're creating, it's about accomplishing that work and overcoming those obstacles.” - Radim Malinic Highlights - The best way to attract your ideal client is having a brand that creates an emotional response from your ideal client The designer is the liaison between the brand and customer Keep one foot in the customer's shoe, and one in the real world when listening to their wants and needs Answering the question: Why does this exist? is what makes the design work Simplicity is what makes great design; limitations are how you achieve that.
