There are a lot of pioneers in the field of content strategy, but one of them can make a strong case for being a true original. Ginny Redish was among the cadre of usability-testing professionals who founded the discipline of UX design. She was making government content usable, readable, and accessible decades before the famous GOV.UK makeover. She was talking about content as conversation years before chatbots and voice assistants became common. Her book, Letting Go of the Words, guided content practitioners and UX designers in the decade before the second wave of UX writing and content design books arrived. It's truly difficult to find an aspect of modern content practice that Ginny hasn't influenced or informed. https://ellessmedia.com/csi/ginny-redish/

Abstract: Spatial navigation is a complex cognitive process that involves neural computations in distributed regions of the brain. Little is known about how cortical regions are coordinated when animals navigate novel spatial environments or how that coordination changes as environments become familiar. We recorded mesoscale calcium dynamics across large swathes of the dorsal cortex in mice solving the Barnes maze, a 2D spatial navigation task where mice used random, serial, and spatial search strategies to navigate to the goal. Cortical dynamics exhibited patterns of repeated calcium activity with rapid and abrupt shifts between cortical activation patterns at sub-second time scales. We used a clustering algorithm to decompose the spatial patterns of cortical calcium activity in a low dimensional state space, identifying 7 states, each corresponding to a distinct spatial pattern of cortical activation, sufficient to describe the cortical dynamics across all the mice. When mice used serial or spatial search strategies to navigate to the goal, the frontal regions of the cortex were reliably activated for prolonged durations of time ( greater than 1s) shortly after trial initiation. These frontal cortex activation events coincided with mice approaching the edge of the maze from the center and were preceded by temporal sequences of cortical activation patterns that were distinct for serial and spatial search strategies. In serial search trials, frontal cortex activation events were preceded by activation of the posterior regions of the cortex followed by lateral activation of one hemisphere. In spatial search trials, frontal cortical events were preceded by activation of posterior regions of the cortex followed by broad activation of the lateral regions of the cortex. Our results delineated cortical components that differentiate goal- and non-goal oriented spatial navigation strategies. Copy rights belong to original authors. Reward prediction-errors weighted by cue salience produces addictive behaviors in simulations, with asymmetrical learning and steeper delay discounting

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.19.533364v1?rss=1 Authors: Kalhan, S., Garrido, M. I., Hester, R., Redish, A. D. Abstract: Dysfunction in learning and motivational systems are thought to contribute to addictive behaviors. Previous models have suggested that dopaminergic roles in learning and motivation could produce addictive behaviors through pharmacological manipulations that provide excess dopaminergic signaling towards these learning and motivational systems. Redish 2004 suggested a role based on dopaminergic signals of value prediction error, while Zhang et al. 2009 suggested a role based on dopaminergic signals of motivation. Both these models present significant limitations. They do not explain the reduced sensitivity to drug-related costs/negative consequences, the increased impulsivity generally found in people with a substance use disorder, craving behaviors, and non-pharmacological dependence, all of which are key hallmarks of addictive behaviors. Here, we propose a novel mathematical definition of salience, that combines aspects of dopaminergic function in both, learning and motivation, within the reinforcement learning framework. Using a single parameter regime, we simulated addictive behaviors that the Zhang et al. 2009 and Redish 2004 models also produce but we went further in simulating the downweighting of drug-related negative prediction-errors, steeper delay discounting of drug rewards, craving behaviors and aspects of behavioral/non-pharmacological addictions. The current salience model builds on our recently proposed conceptual theory that salience modulates internal representation updating and may contribute to addictive behaviors by producing misaligned internal representations (Kalhan et al., 2021). Critically, our current mathematical model of salience argues that the seemingly disparate learning and motivational aspects of dopaminergic functioning may interact through a salience mechanism that modulates internal representation updating. Joe has so much passion and enthusiasm for education, and he is a storyteller extraordinaire. After a long and productive career, he still speaks of the exciting things he is learning with a glisten in his eye and wonder in his words. He bubbles with eager authenticity. And I’m just tickled pink to be talking with him.For a full set of show notes, go to www.physicsalive.com/joeLinks discussed in the episodeM.U.P.P.E.T. projectThe M.U.P.P.E.T. Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com https://Shop.TotalLifeChanges.com/34605577/Products   What Does the Color of My Poop Mean?   Here we are towards the end of December! Wow! The Holiday season is cranking. Today, I’m going to be speaking to you about the COLOR of your Poop. That’s right….the COLOR of your Poop. It’s important to know about what the color of your Poop means. We all are familiar with the shades of Brown Poop. The oh-so-familiar brown poop. Brown Poop is NORMAL! But…….what about the other colors Poop can be? Let’s take a look at some other colors your Poop may be.   Yellow If you see that your Poop has some shades of Yellow, you may have eaten a meal that was extremely high in fat. Yellow Poop could also mean your intestine is not absorbing nutrients properly. You could also have Celiac Disease or another Digestive issue. Call your Doctor if you see Yellow Poop more than one time.   White, Pale or Clay colored Poop Your Bile Duct could be blocked or you may not be producing enough Bile. If you see White Mucos on top of the Brown colored stool, this could be normal or …….. it could also be a sign of a Crohn’s Disease Flare-Up. Crohn’s Disease can cause ulcers in your intestine, which causes an over production of mucus. The mucus may be present in your stool. If you see Mucus in your stool every once in awhile, that could be normal. But……if you see Mucus in your stool more than once in a while, you should contact your Doctor. If you have whitish, bland looking Poop…….Combined with Abdominal Pain, Fever with or without vomiting…..You should seek medical attention right away! That could be a sign of Appendicittis….or some other type of serious digestive issue.   Green A little Green color in your Poop……is just fine. If you see very Green Poop…you may have eaten lots of Green Vegetables……OR……you could be passing your stool too quickly  through your intestine, which means the Bile is unable to break down the fats properly. Certain Infections …..like those caused by the Bacterium – Salmonella or the parasite “Giardia,” can cause your stool to be green in color.  If you haven't eaten anyting "Green" and you see Green Poop, Contact your Doctor.   Black If you have taken “Iron” tablets…..or……you have taken “Pepto Bismol,” you’ll likely see “Black” colored Poop…..which is a harmless side effect. If there was a time you were having an emotional overload and you gave in and ate a bag of Oreo’s……you may possibly see Black colored Poop. So……if you ate Dark Brown or Black Colored foods…..you may see Black Poop. But……if your Poop is Black, which has a more liquidy and “Tarry” looking Stool consistency.... and has a strong smell……This is a sign of bleeding in your gastrointestinal system and you should call your Doctor ASAP.   Red If you had Beets with Dinner or you drank a glass of Tomato Juice last night, you may see the color “Red” in your Poop. If you see Redish colored Poop and you DID NOT eat Red colored food or drinks, you could be Bleeding! You could have Hemorrhoids, colon polyps or Anal Fissures. Anal Fissures are small tears in the lining of your Anus, which are caused by straining during a bowel movement. You are literally trying to pass a large, hard stool and it may cause tearing of the lining. If you have large amounts of blood in your stool or you see a large amount of blood in the toilet, you may require immediate Medical attention. Contact your Doctor.   Eating foods with colored “Dye” may cause your Poop to have that color in it. Be aware of what you have eaten and start noticing the color of your Poop!   After the holidays is a great time to “Cleanse” your colon!   A simple….yet effective way to do that is by drinking TEA! I have been using iaso Tea for the last 6 months and it has been a huge boost to my Digestive System! The Tea is made with a proprietary blend of 9 herbs and you make it just like any TEA. The TEA is very mild, and has hardly any taste.   If you’d like to CLEAN out your Colon naturally, try the TEA. When the page opens, the first box you’ll see on the left is the Instant TEA. All the way to the right……you’ll see the iaso Tea Bag. “Click” on whichever type of TEA you’d like to try and order from the site.  https://Shop.TotalLifeChanges.com/34605577/Products I am always honest with you Nation….so....I want you to know as an affiliate, I will make a commission from the sale of the instant or Bag of Tea. Free will is essential to our understanding of human nature. We are masters of our own fate. We chart our own course. We take our own road. In short, we decide what we are going to do. There seems little doubt that free will is a reality. But how, psychologically and physiologically, does it work? How does free will arise out of what is essentially a biological machine? How do we decide? That's the question at the center of A. David Redish‘s fascinating The Mind Within the Brain: How We Made Decisions and How Those Decisions Go Wrong (Oxford UP, 2013). His elegant answer is that on the neurological level, we have a number of discrete decision-making mechanisms. They range (though there is no real order or hierarchy) from completely unconscious and mechanical, as when experience a nerve reflex, to completely explicit and flexible, as when we deliberate about options and choose one. Especially interesting is David's discussion of what happens when one of these decision-making mechanisms breaks and goes into “failure mode,” namely, the manifestation of common psychological problems such as consistent irrationality, addictive behaviors, and PTSD.
