Today's episode, “Anna Moffo und die leichte Muse,” continues the delicious theme of opera singers “letting down their hair” begun with “Hadley in Wien,” and it also forms a complement and a supplement to the “Anna Moffo Reappraised” episode that I published exactly two years ago. Anna Moffo's recording career divides into three separate eras and markets: Italy in the late 1950s and early 1960s; which overlapped with the US in the 1960s; and finally Germany in the 1970s and beyond. Each of these eras in the Moffo career was represented on disc in different ways: jazz arrangements of standards from the Great American Songbook in her earliest (and rarest) Italian recordings, followed by breathy Italian pop songs (some even composed by Moffo herself); early twentieth century Broadway operettas and MGM movie musicals in the US when her voice was at its peak; and Viennese operetta for the German-speaking market, as her vocal instrument became more fragile, while it still represented her finest work of that period. Each of these eras and genres is thoroughly explored in this episode. She is partnered in all of this repertoire by some impressive co-stars: Sergio Franchi, René Kollo, Rudolf Schock, and Robert Merrill as duet partners, with musical direction by Ennio Morricone, Henri René, Lehman Engel, and Skitch Henderson. Recordings range from 1960 through 1983, with the vast majority coming from the 1960s. In spite of the vocal and technical frailty displayed in the later recordings, Moffo's ability to communicate in this repertoire never flagged. And of course throughout her entire career, no singer so consistently presented a more striking image of vocal and physical glamour than did Anna Moffo. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

This trumpet-playing musician and bandleader was loved by Milwaukee symphony fans. Doc Severinsen appeared many times with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. And in 2007 he was named Pops Conductor Emeritus in Milwaukee. His father wanted him to play the violin. He wanted to play the trombone, but his arms weren't long enough, so he settled for the trumpet. Doc toured with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey and served in World War II. He became the studio musician for NBC and worked with Steve Allen on the original “Tonight Show.” He left the show for a while, until Tonight Show bandleader Skitch Henderson asked him to return and play trumpet in the band. Five years later he was the leader of the “Tonight Show” band. Doc was known for wearing gaudy clothing, joking with Johnny Carson, and playing “Stump the Band.” Severinsen has recorded many albums and won the Grammy award for best large jazz ensemble performance. In this conversation he discusses his broken marriages, how he got the name Doc and what he thinks of the unauthorized biographies.

At 17 she won Talentville USA, a nationwide talent contest sponsored by Coca Cola - the equivalent today to America's/Britain's Got Talent - culminating in finals in New York, but she chose instead to go to Indiana University to study for a degree in music before joining the Metropolitan Opera National Company and subsequently touring all over the United States and Canada. However, her love for Musical Theatre totally overwhelmed that of her love for opera…and a very happy career in musicals has followed. She arrived in London in 1971 to star as Magnolia in SHOW BOAT with Dame Cleo Laine at the Adelphi Theatre - the show was such a smash-hit that it ran for a then-record 2 years and 3 months. The production was recorded and presented on the Tony Awards as the best International production of that season. Lorna fell in love with London, staying in the UK to star in many musicals (SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, HELLO DOLLY! Inspired to play, Ron went to his elementary school band director, Mr. Cahill, and asked to play what he thought was Pete's instrument, a saxophone. So that's what the school gave him. That little mistake has given the world of Jazz an artist that contributes to the genre with exceptional skill to this day. Continuing to play throughout his school years, Ron finally got his own alto saxophone at age 16 and started taking lessons in a studio across the street from Radio City Music Hall. It was also during this time that Ron would frequent the famed Birdland Jazz Club on Broadway. He spent a lot of time soaking up inspiration from all of the Big Band and Jazz legends that played the club – such as Count Basie and Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Both would prove to be major influences in Ron's career. It was at Birdland that Ron met Frank Foster, who played with and arranged for Count Basie; the two became lifelong friends. One of many prized items in Ron's memorabilia is a collection of original arrangements that Frank had written for Basie's band and then gave Ron copies for his band. Ron has spent years perfecting his musical prowess. He's played with legends like Woody Herman, Tito Puente, Billy May, Skitch Henderson and Lionel Hampton. While playing with Hamp, he had the opportunity to do a recorded performance at the Smithsonian Institute, where Ron's solos were taped and placed into their Archives. As part of an All-Star band, Ron played at a 2001 Charlie Parker Birthday Tribute in Harlem. He has also been featured during performances at the Paramount Theatre and the world famous Apollo Theatre.

David Hill - All Shook Up (1957) The original recording.  From Discogs.com: Birtha was one of the leading female rock bands performing during the early 1970s. The band consisted of four women: Shele Pinizzotto (guitar), Rosemary Butler (bass), Sherry Hagler (keyboards) and Liver Favela (drums). All four members of the group performed lead vocals and harmonies. Liver was the last member to join Birtha in 1968. The group immediately started playing the club circuit and toured from California to Alaska. From 1968 to 1971 Birtha worked to tighten and refine their rock sound and in 1971 they started writing their own material, most by themselves, occasionally in partnership with other parties, including Mark Wickman and Gabriel Mekler. Birtha signed a record contract with Dunhill Records in 1972 and recorded their first album "Birtha" with record producer Gabriel Mekler and engineers Dave Hassinger and Val Garay. After the release of their first album, Birtha began playing rock concerts and clubs throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. While taking breaks in their home town, Los Angeles, they would often play The Whiskey and The Troubadour and frequently played a club in Glendale, CA called The Sopwith Camel. In 1973 Birtha recorded their second album, "Can't Stop The Madness" with producer and engineer Christopher Huston. The band was on the road for more than 250 days a year and played with groups like, Fleetwood Mac, Alice Cooper, Poco, Black Oak Arkansas, Cheech and Chong, The Kinks, B.B. King, Three Dog Night, James Gang and many more. The band broke up in 1975 and all the members went their separate ways. The album was one of the first pieces to produce a consistent psychedelic theme throughout the whole LP. All of the material featured was originally composed by the band. Despite the conflicting dates, it is generally considered the first album to use the term "psychedelic" in its title. Finding God again, From starvation to humanitarian   Angels Don't Lie session with my guest Allessandro Piovezehns.. One man's journey of being abandoned by his family, left to starve and find shelter on the streets of Brazil to finding God through forgetting Him first.  Allessandro tells us about how he gave up on God and turned inward to trust only himself. His life of crime and violence was turned around after meeting a spiritualist who gave him a chance to reclaim his life and led him to become the humanitarian and following God's guidance to be of service. Listen in on how God is guiding and speaking to Alessandro now and how he has been led to help rebuild The Silo, at Hunt Hill Farm, in New Milford CT. and reinstate the vision of a cultural arts center that was founded by the late Ruth and Skitch Henderson.

We were having so much fun with our friend, Tracy Newman, we broke the internet. Or, Mercury is retrograde… or FB’s Live feed’s a whore.

We jumped into the show with Tracy singing arguably my favorite of her tunes, Fire Up The Weed, *coughs* then got right into her Emmy win with co-writer, Jonathan Stark, and the stories around that ground-breaking coming out episode of Ellen, and the politics and personalities behind it, when BAM! We were thrown outta cyberspace. We revisited the conversation here, on our second attempt, but to hear that great Newman tune, it’s up top here https://goo.gl/cA3DZa . Tracy opens this edition with her Carpool song, another gem. More Ellen/Emmy insights followed…. did you know if you’re not a star you gotta pay for your lady? Worth the $300+ bucks, Man, is she a beauty. Ridiculously heady to hold. Tracy’s Peabody Award ain’t no slacker either, even if that one cost another couple of hundred. Who knew? We went back to childhood, her sister Laraine, and brother Dutch––twins. I didn’t know that, neither. Tracy started as a folksinger, did the Greenwich Village scene, also performing in the comedy clubs, where she got a taste for the funny and dated an unlikely fellow, landed an even more unlikely manager, and, a spot on The Tonight Show. A show biz nightmare sent her back to LA where she took up Improv with Laraine, and a group of funny others, founding The Groundlings, where Laraine was plucked for SNL––fun story there. Tracy spent years performing and teaching and at soon to be writing partner Jonathan’s invitation, wrote a script which got them staff positions at Cheers. Not a bad place to launch. Bob, starring Newhart, The Nanny, and Ellen followed, leading to them creating According to Jim, which was a game changer to an already stellar career. Great success and years later, Tracy returned to folk singing and has been living the life she loves ever since. Her current passion is her company, Run Along Home, which produces her CDs for kids. You can find them and her sensationally funny and oft moving tunes for grownups here www.tracynewman.com and www.runalonghome.com. There are a couple of other musical treats, a song for her sis, and loads of great stories about Johnny Carson. Ricky Jay, Skitch Henderson, Lily Tomlin. Lorne Michaels, Bob Newhart. Ed McMahon, Rodney Dangerfield, Fran Drescher, Ellen… and Tracy wants me to tell you, she meant narcolepsy. You’ll know when you get there. The time literally flies. Tracy’s a multi-faceted, multi-talented treat. This loaded slice of Newman’s a feast of fun.   Today, I'm really excited to have Canadian pianist David Jalbert on the show!  David is an extraordinary person, a brilliant artist, and a very dear friend!   We have a great conversation and cover many topics, from finding yourself as an artist, to the importance of confidence in our progress, and how to learn and memorize music.  David is incredible (and hilarious!) and I know you will really enjoy his approach to all things music and find tons of value in this episode!  In this episode, David talks about: His musical journey, from a small town in the province of Quebec studying at the Conservatoire, the University of Montreal, the Toronto Royal Conservatory in Toronto, and Juilliard, leading to his professional career The wonderful musical program he took part in at the Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec The Canadian Music Competition and how competitions were a source of motivation for him How his curiosity and the fact that he “thrived on the forbidden” really helped him develop his technical skills How having many teachers taught him so much, but left him somewhat confused How he found himself back His learning process and how he realized that he could learn faster The importance of confidence in the learning process Memorizing music The importance of being organized How being interested in expanding our cultural horizon can positively affect our growth as an artist and give us “a leg up”   En français, nous discutons de : Son parcours musical, des débuts à aujourd'hui, en touchant à ses moments au Conservatoire de Musique de Rimouski, ses expériences au Concours de Musique du Canada, et ses études à l'Université de Montréal, la Glenn Gould School, et à Juilliard La motivation et l'inspiration qu'il a retiré de sa participation au Concours de Musique du Canada L'approche de la technique de Marc Durand qui a eu une grande influence dans sa vie Sa période à la Glenn Gould School et l'impact d'étudier avec plusieurs professeurs Son expérience avec Jérome Lowenthal et comment il a développé sa voix authentique À quoi sa pratique ressemble o   L'importance de la précondition – de se mettre dans le bon « espace mental » o   L'importance d'avoir un plan Son processus d'apprentissage et de mémorisation du répertoire   More Information about David Jalbert: Website: http://davidjalbert.com/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/davidjalbertpiano/videos Johannes Brahms: A Biography by Jan Swafford   Biography A virtuoso with a warm and elegant style and a wide-ranging repertoire, pianist David Jalbert has established himself among the elite of a new generation of classical musicians, and was named by the CBC among the 15 best Canadian pianists of all time. With his personal style, incomparable stage presence, and refined ear, he has wowed audiences and critics everywhere: “a deeply musical pianist” (Cleveland Plain Dealer), “a virtuoso in the best sense of the word” (La Presse), “…wide-ranging musical imagination, phenomenal technique, and an unerring lightness of being” (The Toronto Star). His first solo disc, dedicated to the works of Corigliano and Rzewski (in preparation for which he worked with both composers), was launched to great applause on Endeavor in 2004 and was followed in 2006 by a recording of Fauré's complete Nocturnes (a winning selection on La Tribune des Critiques de Disques, France-Culture). His 2008 release on the ATMA label, Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues opus 87, drew rave reviews, won an Opus Award, and was nominated for a Juno Award. He followed it up with an album dedicated to works by minimalist greats John Adams and Philip Glass (2010), and his 2012 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations was met with unanimous praise. He recorded works by Poulenc and Satie on “Le Comble de la Distinction” (2015) and virtuosic transcriptions of Russian ballets by Stravinsky and Prokofiev in 2017, which earned him another Juno nomination. An accomplished chamber musician in both the hall and the studio, his releases include Poulenc's music for winds and piano (with the woodwind quintet Pentaèdre) as well as the Rachmaninov and Chopin Cello Sonatas with his long-standing musical partner Denise Djokic. With violinist Jasper Wood and cellist Denise Djokic, he is also a member of Triple Forte, a piano trio whose first recording was awarded a 2014 Prix Opus (Album of the Year). Jalbert has also collaborated with violinist Rachel Barton Pine, the Cecilia and Alcan string quartets, double-bassist Joel Quarrington (on another Opus-winning collaboration, the album Brothers in Brahms as well as a Schubert album) and with pianists Anton Kuerti, Wonny Song and Jean-Philippe Collard.
