“The abuser often maintains that facade of having it together and looking after their partner. It's that image we tried to set up immediately,” says award-winning director Jack Stockley. He opens up about his true purpose behind his short film “Purgatory,” - to reveal the quiet devastation of coercive control in abusive relationships. By portraying the abuser as charming and well-composed, Jack exposes a disturbing duality that keeps the abused partner isolated and questioning their own reality. His film's nuanced storytelling challenges viewers to see beyond appearances and recognize the silent suffering hidden beneath the surface.   In this episode, Jack joins Dr. Jaime Zuckerman to discuss the behavioral nuances of his film and the often subtle patterns of narcissistic abuse. How do you depict domestic violence without showing physical violence? And what makes coercive control so difficult to recognize, even when it's happening right in front of us? Jack shares how “Purgatory” uses subtle details, such as visual cues and carefully crafted dialogue, to immerse viewers in the isolating, and often invisible, world of psychological abuse. This episode encourages us to look deeper into the patterns of narcissistic abuse, so that we can recognize red flags sooner. “Purgatory” is not only a compelling film but an essential conversation starter on the realities of narcissistic abuse.   Quotes “So you start the film questioning, ‘What's her problem?' Right from the beginning, it mirrors how many abusive relationships seem from the outside. You think, ‘Well, she's a bit messy,' or ‘He's holding it all together.' The abuser often maintains that facade of having it together and looking after their partner. It's that image we try to set up immediately.” (08:44 | Jack Stockley)  “When a woman leaves a narcissistic, abusive, grossly controlling relationship like that, the time she's most at risk for harm to herself and her children is when she leaves—or if they find out that she's going to leave, or right after she leaves. That's the highest time for violence. So it isn't simply a matter of just leaving; it's about leaving safely.” (16:00 | Dr. Z) “As a storyteller, as a filmmaker, to me, those subtle details and nuances that convey coercive control and emotional abuse are the most important. It's the lifeblood of the film because you have to make it.” (29:33 | Jack Stockley)  “People don't talk about the fact that rape can exist in a marriage. It can exist in any relationship. It's not something that happens only between strangers in the park. It's not a cliché, but people don't talk about it. People don't think that it's a real thing.” (35:19 | Jack Stockley)    Links Connect with Jack Stockley: Follow Jack Stockley on Instagram: @thereal_jps Follow Blue Muse Productions on Instagram: @bluemuseproductions Visit Blue Muse Productions YouTube channel to watch Purgatory: https://www.youtube.com/@BlueMuseProductions Jack's newest short film - Flying - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jezw_c9UwQs Connect with Dr. Z: https://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/ https://www.zgrouptherapy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/dr.z_psychologist/ https://www.tiktok.com/@dr.z_psychologist https://www.youtube.com/@DrJaimeZuckerman   Shop my new Mindfully Messy hoodie here: http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/apparel Get my FREE breathing exercise here: http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/newsletter Register for my virtual workshops here: http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/workshops Order my workbooks! http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/books Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

The irrigation of the internet is coming. For decades, we've accessed the internet much like how we, so long ago, accessed water—by traveling to it. We connected (quite literally), we logged on, and we zipped to addresses and sites to read, learn, shop, and scroll. Over the years, the internet was accessible from increasingly more devices, like smartphones, smartwatches, and even smart fridges. But still, it had to be accessed, like a well dug into the ground to pull up the water below.Moving forward, that could all change. This year, several companies debuted their vision of a future that incorporates Artificial Intelligence to deliver the internet directly to you, with less searching, less typing, and less decision fatigue. For the startup Humane, that vision includes the use of the company's AI-powered, voice-operated wearable pin that clips to your clothes. By simply speaking to the AI pin, users can text a friend, discover the nutritional facts about food that sits directly in front of them, and even compare the prices of an item found in stores with the price online. For a separate startup, Rabbit, that vision similarly relies on a small, attractive smart-concierge gadget, the R1. With the bright-orange slab designed in coordination by the company Teenage Engineering, users can hail an Uber to take them to the airport, play an album on Spotify, and put in a delivery order for dinner.Away from physical devices, The Browser Company of New York is also experimenting with AI in its own web browser, Arc. In February, the company debuted its endeavor to create a “browser that browses for you” with a snazzy video that showed off Arc's AI capabilities to create unique, individualized web pages in response to questions about recipes, dinner reservations, and more. But all these small-scale projects, announced in the first month or so of 2024, had to make room a few months later for big-money interest from the first ever internet conglomerate of the world—Google. At the company's annual Google I/O conference on May 14, VP and Head of Google Search Liz Reid pitched the audience on an AI-powered version of search in which “Google will do the Googling for you.”Now, Reid said, even complex, multi-part questions can be answered directly within Google, with no need to click a website, evaluate its accuracy, or flip through its many pages to find the relevant information within. This, it appears, could be the next phase of the internet… and our host David Ruiz has a lot to say about it.Today, on the Lock and Code podcast, we bring back Director of Content Anna Brading and Cybersecurity Evangelist Mark Stockley to discuss AI-powered concierges, the value of human choice when so many small decisions could be taken away by AI, and, as explained by Stockley, whether the appeal of AI is not in finding the “best” vacation, recipe, or dinner reservation, but rather the best of anything for its user.“It's not there to tell you what the best chocolate chip cookie in the world is for everyone. It's there to help you figure out what the best chocolate chip cookie is for you, on a Monday evening, when the weather's hot, and you're hungry.”Tune in today. You can also find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts, plus whatever preferred podcast platform you use.For all our cybersecurity coverage, visit Malwarebytes Labs at

Defeating Little Brother requires a new outlook on privacy: Lock and Code S04E23

A worrying trend is cropping up amongst Americans, particularly within Generation Z—they're spying on each other more.Whether reading someone's DMs, rifling through a partner's text messages, or even rummaging through the bags and belongings of someone else, Americans enjoy keeping tabs on one another, especially when they're in a relationship. According to recent research from Malwarebytes, a shocking 49% of Gen Zers agreed or strongly agreed with the statement: “Being able to track my spouse's/significant other's location when they are away is extremely important to me.”On the Lock and Code podcast with host David Ruiz, we've repeatedly tackled the issue of surveillance, from the NSA's mass communications surveillance program exposed by Edward Snowden, to the targeted use of Pegasus spyware against human rights dissidents and political activists, to the purchase of privately-collected location data by state law enforcement agencies across the country. But the type of surveillance we're talking about today is different. It isn't so much "Big Brother"—a concept introduced in the socio-dystopian novel 1984 by author George Orwell. It's "Little Brother."As far back as 2010, in a piece titled “Little Brother is Watching,” author Walter Kirn wrote for the New York Times: “As the Internet proves every day, it isn't some stern and monolithic Big Brother that we have to reckon with as we go about our daily lives, it's a vast cohort of prankish Little Brothers equipped with devices that Orwell, writing 60 years ago, never dreamed of and who are loyal to no organized authority. The invasion of privacy — of others' privacy but also our own, as we turn our lenses on ourselves in the quest for attention by any means — has been democratized.”Little Brother is us, recording someone else on our phones and then posting it on social media. Little Brother is us, years ago, Facebook stalking someone because they're a college crush. Little Brother is us, watching a Ring webcam of a delivery driver, including when they are mishandling a package but also when they are doing a stupid little dance that we requested so we could post it online and get little dopamine hits from the Likes. Little Brother is our anxieties being soothed by watching the shiny blue GPS dots that represent our husbands and our wives, driving back from work.Little Brother isn't just surveillance. It is increasingly popular, normalized, and accessible surveillance. And it's creeping its way into more and more relationships every day. So, what can stop it? Today, we speak with our guests, Malwarebytes security evangelist Mark Stockley and Malwarebytes Labs editor-in-chief Anna Brading, about the apparent "appeal" of Little Brother surveillance, whether the tenets of privacy can ever fully defeat that surveillance, and what the possible merits of this surveillance could be, including, as Stockley suggested, in revealing government abuses of power. "My question to you is, as with all forms of technology, there are two very different sides for this. So is...

In May, a lawyer who was defending their client in a lawsuit against Columbia's biggest airline, Avianca, submitted a legal filing before a court in Manhattan, New York, that listed several previous cases as support for their main argument to continue the lawsuit. But when the court reviewed the lawyer's citations, it found something curious: Several were entirely fabricated. The lawyer in question had gotten the help of another attorney who, in scrounging around for legal precedent to cite, utilized the "services" of ChatGPT. ChatGPT was wrong. So why do so many people believe it's always right? Today, on the Lock and Code podcast with host David Ruiz, we speak with Malwarebytes security evangelist Mark Stockley and Malwarebytes Labs editor-in-chief Anna Brading to discuss the potential consequences of companies and individuals embracing natural language processing tools—like ChatGPT and Google's Bard—as arbiters of truth. Far from being understood simply as chatbots that can produce remarkable mimicries of human speech and dialogue, these tools are becoming sources of truth for countless individuals, while also gaining attraction amongst companies that see artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM) as the future, no matter what industry they operate in. The future could look eerily similar to an earlier change in translation services, said Stockley, who witnessed the rapid displacement of human workers in favor of basic AI tools. The tools were far, far cheaper, but the quality of the translations—of the truth, Stockley said—was worse. "That is an example of exactly this technology coming in and being treated as the arbiter of truth in the sense that there is a cost to how much truth we want."Tune in today. We mention Submedia's excellent show Trouble, which has an upcoming episode this month on counter-insurgency. They do great work, so throw them some taco money while they are fundraising this month. From Submedia: “After years of suffering the Stimulator's taco farts in silence, we'd reached our limits. Plus, we wanted to shift gears and embark on an ambitious new project – a monthly documentary series called Trouble, intended to be screened collectively as a tool to help spark critical conversations around local organizing. So when we pitched the idea to Stim and he refused to go along with this new direction, we decided he had to go. Well… turns out we fucked up. It's not that we regret launching Trouble, or have any plans to stop making new episodes. Far from it. We've received tons of positive feedback on the project, and are stoked to see trouble-makers have started dozens of screening collectives in cities across the world. What we didn't realize was exactly how much work goes into producing a 30 minute interview-driven documentary every month, and how little time that would leave us for our other projects. So, suffice to say… we've been reconsidering our decision for some time now. But the straw that finally broke the camel's back was when alt-right shitlords targeted us last month with a mass snitching campaign, and successfully got Paypal to cancel our account – wiping out, in the push of a button, a monthly sustainer base that had taken us ten years to build up. The time has come to #BringBackStim and unleash him full-force on these fucks. We want to give him a new show – a weekly digital pulpit where he can expose and ruthlessly antagonize far-right personalities, while also covering topical news segments from an anarchist lens. But in order to do that, we need to grow our collective so that we can handle the increased workload. And in order to do that, we need your support.” If you're near Vancouver, BC, there's a building materials supply drive going on until October to support the Secwepemc people's tiny homes blockade of the proposed Kinder Morgan TransMountain tar sands pipeline. Here is a Unicorn Riot livestream of direct action against the Enbridge Line 3 pipeline in Wisconsin, in which someone locked down to a flipped over car to halt construction.
