Citing comments from billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban, he explains why community colleges, affordable state schools, and alternative paths to education often provide similar value without saddling graduates with decades of debt. He challenges parents to rethink the prestige game surrounding expensive universities and makes the case that lifelong learning has never been more accessible. Chris also questions whether families should reveal their financial hand through the college aid process and offers practical advice for avoiding a financial burden that can derail future wealth-building.

From the dangers of buy now pay later to the hidden complexity of retirement planning, this episode is packed with practical, jargon-free guidance for advisors and clients alike. Key Quote“Perfect is the enemy of great — especially when it comes to taking action with your finances.” — Jeff Panik Key Takeaways•       Financial literacy is still a crisis — lobbying from credit and lending industries actively works against educating young consumers, leaving them vulnerable before the race even starts.•       Ask three questions before any purchase: Do I really need this? In this episode of An Educated Guest, host Todd Zipper sits down with acclaimed author and journalist Anya Kamenetz for a wide-ranging conversation on high-stakes tests, debt, generational justice, screen-time, and more. The conversation begins with a fifteen-year retrospective on Anya's landmark book, DIY U, exploring how the concept of "unbundling" higher education has evolved in an age dominated by mobile technology and alternative credentials. Together, Todd and Anya tackle the structural flaws of high-stakes testing in K-12 public schools, the long-tail impacts of the pandemic on student mental health, and why a "learning recession" has persisted despite decades of standardized metric optimization. Finally, Anya shares insights from her latest efforts regarding youth climate anxiety, outlining her guiding philosophy of "generational justice"—the fundamental responsibility we hold to leave a better, more stable world for those who come after us. Whether you are a parent navigating screen time limits, an edtech innovator, or an observer of cultural trends, this episode offers a profound look at how we can rebuild human flourishing into the DNA of modern education.

For decades, Americans were promised that a college degree guaranteed a secure spot in the middle class. But instead of entering corporate management, many graduates are finding themselves trapped in low-paying service roles with crippling debt. Is this widening gap between expectations and financial realities fundamentally reshaping the modern American workforce? New York Times reporter Noam Scheiber joins the podcast to unpack the core arguments of his new book “Mutiny: The Rise and Revolt of the College-Educated Working Class” about this labor shift. He argues that the psychological injury of these broken promises is sparking a unique wave of workplace activism.  The systemic failure of the college wage premium poses urgent questions for the future of American capitalism. If millions of highly educated citizens feel cheated by the system, the resulting political and economic destabilization could be severe.  Subscribe to our Youtube Channel Follow Capitalisn't on Instagram & TikTok Send us your questions or comments by emailing capitalisntpod@gmail.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Universities, long celebrated as sanctuaries of free thought and intellectual rigour, have for centuries been regarded as the best way to educate and conduct research. But increasingly, this assumption is being questioned. A recent study found that two-thirds of academics feel their freedom to teach and study is being curtailed. In 2022 alone, over 1,000 instances of content warnings or text removals were documented across UK universities. While some academics now criticise PhD programmes as a way to extract "fees and cheap labour" from students, reports suggest that most academic papers are read by an average of just ten people. More than half of respondents now say that going to university is not worth it. And in the US, graduate student debt averages over $71,000, while similar information is often freely available online.Should we call time on the age of the university and find new, innovative ways to educate people? Should we leave research and innovation to the business sector and free-market forces? In this episode, Dustin sits down with Van Ton-Quinlivan, CEO of Futuro Health and host of the WorkforceRx podcast, to unpack how her organization is tackling the healthcare workforce shortage by helping adults earn debt-free credentials in allied health fields. Workforce readiness, hands-on learning, and flexible credentialing are no longer peripheral conversations in higher education. They are central to how institutions are being judged on value, relevance, and outcomes. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Jarred McNeely, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Sonoran Desert Institute, about how applied, skills-based education can be delivered beyond traditional campuses without sacrificing rigor or quality. McNeely shares how SDI redesigned hands-on instruction for distributed learners by moving labs into students' homes, rethinking assessment around demonstrated competence, and investing heavily in faculty training and support. The conversation explores what these approaches mean not just for trade and technical programs, but for institutions across higher education facing increasing pressure around cost, completion, and workforce alignment. This episode is especially relevant for presidents, provosts, and academic leaders evaluating how applied learning, credential flexibility, and faculty systems can evolve to meet today's student realities. Topics Covered Why hands-on learning does not require centralized labs How lab kits, video-based assessment, and staged progression support skill development What it takes to train and support faculty in distributed, applied programs How simulation and practicum models expand access without lowering standards Why stackable credentials better align with real career movement The role of critical thinking and problem identification in applied education Three Key Takeaways for Presidents and Boards Learning should be assessed by demonstrated competence, not physical presence Faculty training and support systems are the primary drivers of instructional quality Flexible, stackable credentials reduce student risk while supporting long-term engagement Read the transcript or extended show summary: https://changinghighered.com/reduce-student-debt-risk-improve-employability/ #HigherEducation #WorkforceDevelopment #AppliedLearning #HigherEdLeadership #ChangingHigherEd

Think you can't buy a home until your debt is gone and your savings are massive? Think again. In this episode, David Sidoni breaks down the real math behind saving for a down payment while managing debt — and why waiting too long could actually cost you more. For first-time homebuyers, the internet is full of misinformation: you need zero debt, a huge down payment, and perfect timing. Wrong. In this episode, David tackles one of the biggest fears holding renters back — how much you actually need to save, and whether it's possible to do that while still carrying debt. Spoiler: it is.Building on Rosie's inspiring story from the last episode (a single mom who bought her first home in 2025 after bankruptcy), David unpacks the myths that scare buyers into renting for far too long. He explains the strategies that let you save and pay down debt at the same time, and why the rising age of first-time buyers — now at a shocking 41 years old — is proof that misinformation is keeping people trapped. If you're stuck renting because you think your debt or small savings disqualify you, this episode is your wake-up call. Homeownership is possible sooner than you think — if you know the facts. Quote: “You don't need a big down payment and no debt. Nope, nope, nope.” Highlights:The myth of needing zero debt before buying a home — busted. How to save for a down payment while paying down debt. Why waiting too long could cost you more in rising prices and rents.Rosie's real-life story: from bankruptcy in 2019 to buying in 2025.The shocking truth: average first-time buyer age has jumped to 41.
