As melodramatic as it may seem, I'll never forget the first time I encountered The New London Group's A Pedagogy of Multiliteracies: Designing Social Futures. After an evening of mindless scrolling in the summer of 2016, I clicked on a fortuitous Facebook post from a fellow English teacher. As I read I became increasingly enraptured. It felt inspiring. It felt fresh. It felt innovative. I assumed it was cutting-edge research. Then I saw the publication date. 1996. Reading that publication date made it abundantly clear educational practice had fallen well behind educational scholarship. It's a disconnect I notice more and more as I move through my own dissertation. It's also a lament shared by my esteemed guests. This week I was joined by Dr. Troy Hicks professor of English and Education at Central Michigan University and the Director of the Chippewa River Writing Project and his co-author, Dr. Kristen Hawley Turner: Professor of education at Drew University and director of the Drew Writing Project. Our discussion is coming hot on the heels of their recent publication Digital Literacy (Still) Can't Wait: Four Questions to Reframe the Conversation around Technology in the English Classroom, a follow-up to their 2013 publication No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can't Wait. Though I'm sure they wish such clarion calls weren't still necessary, I'm thankful for scholars like them who continue to fight the good fight to bring powerful ideas to practitioners and pose poignant questions about how we use technology in our classrooms. Whether you're a techno-skeptic or ed-tech enthusiast, Kristen and Troy's four questions are an invitation for us to use technology in more transformative ways. Enjoy! I began my teaching career like many teachers -- without a clue as to how to teach writing. My teacher prep courses did not cover writing instruction and I didn’t have a school writing curriculum to offer guidance so you can imagine how lost I was. My first year of teaching, my students wrote ONE time -- a poem for Mother’s Day in May of that school year. Determined to make things better, I began to research the best practices for teaching writing. I read everything I could get my hands on and was lucky enough to come across Ralph Fletcher’s The Writing Workshop. I devoured this book in one weekend and was excited to bring more writing time to my classroom. After a few years of having a classroom writing workshop, I felt better but still felt like something was missing. My students were definitely writing more, but I was struggling with helping them move forward as writers. In the summer of 2012, I participated in the National Writing Project’s Summer Institute at UW-Milwaukee. It was here that I had an important revelation -- that teachers who write make the best teachers of writers. If I wanted to become an effective writing teacher, I needed to write. As a teacher-writer, I experienced firsthand how writing works. How to push through the hard parts. How a writer’s writing process is unique to every writer. How struggle is something ALL writers experience. I brought all of this experience into my classroom and it made a HUGE difference. Once I became a teacher-writer, I became a member of my classroom writing community. I wrote alongside my students. I conferred with them writer-to-writer. They saw me doing the work of a writer so they pushed themselves to do the same. In 2017 I left the classroom and began Teach Write LLC, a writing education company that helps teachers and their students grow as writers. I work with individual teachers and schools to support writing instruction that is grounded in the work of teacher-as-writer. My Time to Write workshops offered through my Teach Write Academy brings together teacher-writers once a week on Zoom to write together, to talk about writing and our writing-classrooms, and to cheer each other on in our writing endeavors. Our monthly #TeachWrite Facebook Slow Chat (formerly Twitter chat) focuses on the life and work of the teacher-writer and has connected hundreds of teacher-writers across the country and world. Tricia is currently a high school English teacher and Department Chair in southeastern Pennsylvania. She began teaching after receiving her Masters degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001, and since then, she has taught world literature, American literature, AP English Language & Composition, AP Literature & Composition, AP Capstone, and has served as a faculty advisor for several student groups, including the Asian American Student Association, Students Against Gun Violence, and Students Organized for Anti-Racism. She is also a member of her district’s equity team. In addition to her work on various language arts, diversity, and technology committees in her district, Tricia is also a Co-Director for the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project (PAWLP) at West Chester University. In her work with PAWLP, Tricia teaches graduate courses on reading and writing in digital spaces as well as teacher inquiry. Selected as a 2016-18 Heinemann Fellow, Tricia’s action research examined the ways in which elementary reading and writing practices can be used to further adolescent literacy, specifically focusing on teaching comprehension strategies. Her work expanded to interrogate the ways in which readers’ varied and intersecting personal identities inform the ways in which students read themselves, texts, and the world. By helping students reflect on their experiences, and the biases that have emerged from them, Tricia hopes that this habit of self-reflection, coupled with critical literacy skills, will help students become more responsible and engaged citizens and members of their community. As a co-Founder of #DisruptTexts—an anti-bias, anti-racist effort to decolonize the language arts curricula and pedagogy—Tricia hopes that reading and writing can be a liberating force for justice in students’ personal and academic lives. As a teacher consultant for the National Writing Project and a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Tricia has presented at the NWP Annual Meeting, the NCTE Annual Convention and other regional conferences. In her work as a presenter and consultant, including her role at The Educator Collaborative, Tricia has discussed literacy topics that include: choice independent reading and classroom libraries, authentic mentor texts for writing, multi-genre research writing, student inquiry projects, adolescent reading strategies, digital tools and literacies, anti-bias pedagogy, teacher action research, and curriculum planning and design. Tricia writes online at her website, triciaebarvia.org, and has contributed to the Heinemann Blog, Moving Writers, and Write Connect Share (PAWLP). Her writing has also appeared in Education Week, Literacy Today, and English Journal. Adam believes strongly in education technology, but in that order. He loves to share his tips, tools and thoughts through his blog “Edtech Elixirs” and his YouTube channel (which combined currently have over a quarter million views), and is a frequent presenter at both international and regional conferences. Adam began as an English classroom teacher, eventually earning Teacher of the Year at South Oldham High School in 2009 and becoming National Board Certified in 2013. His belief in the impact of educational technology started with literature circle student podcasts. Not only did the students receive responses from authors of the books, but young adults as far away as China let them know their podcasts were a part of their own classroom experiences. The project led Adam and his students to the cover of Kentucky Teacher in April 2009 and coverage by NCTE. In 2014, a Core Content-aligned unit on “Shakespeare and Star Wars” culminated in a Skype Q & A with a New York Times best-selling author, Adam’s unit materials hosted on multiple sites, and a mention in Star Wars Insider in April 2015. In 2014, Adam became Shelby County Public School’s first Technology Integration Coach; he is currently Shelby’s Digital Learning Coordinator. He was hired to help lead the staff professional development on blended learning as Shelby began its K-12 1:1 initiative. This led to the creation of a “Share Fair” conference model (presented by Shelby staff, but open for all to attend) that has been a popular annual event since 2015. Among other achievements while at Shelby, Adam was the writer and adapter of a digital citizenship district curriculum that annually spirals through five focus strands and consists of 65 non-repeating K-12 lessons. In 2019, Adam was awarded the KySTE Outstanding Leader of the Year award as recognition of his outreach and service. In addition to his educational work, Adam is also a writer of poetry and short stories who has also written, produced and directed stageplays and radio dramas. His wife and two daughters inspire him to continue learning and writing, and they are always willing to watch a Star Wars or Marvel movie with him if he asks nicely. He holds a Ph.D. in Literature, Theology and the Arts from Glasgow University and has taught in a variety of Higher Education disciplines. By credit hours, Dr. Heit has over 25 years of teaching experience across disciplines and has graded more than 30,000 papers (yes, he counted!). During his time in the classroom, Dr. Heit saw limits in his ability to help students consistently improve their writing. So, in 2014 he left academia and founded Ecree, a technology company that specializes in a proprietary, interactive writing tool for students and teachers. Dr. Heit is on a mission to nurture a generation of better writers and thinkers with widespread access to easy and adaptive writing software. Jeremy is an expert in the field of writing instruction and shares with Troy that there is no singular best way to teach writing and each teacher must find the method that works best for themselves and their students. However for him personally, it involves unstructured writing time and live modeling of his own writing in front of students to share his vulnerability as a pathway for students to share their own. His time with the National Writing Project has imparted teaching methods and models that he now uses in his everyday practice, including a focus on positive feedback, and engaging his students in discussions about their work by requiring students to not just accept, but respond to given feedback. He takes his lessons in writing instruction not just to language arts students, but to his science class as well. He makes writing a focus, having his students keep journals and participate in a variety of science writing projects. She also speaks to the importance of using mentor texts to guide writing instruction for both teachers and students. Feedback is key for Liz, both in her own work, and in her teaching. In this episode, Andy shares a variety of ways he uses feedback to guide student writers and the importance of feedback in his own writing life. He remarks on how this protocol most closely mirrors his experience with professional editors. Learn more about the critical friend protocol here: http://buildingpublicunderstanding.org/assets/files/critical_friend_conv.pdf Andy also shares his go-to tip for engaging students, which is having them create paper proposals as a way to frame the rhetorical situation and launch them into the writing process. This project helps him to decipher what students are genuinely invested in, and gives them the space to get creative. When students start thinking about their own thinking they become invested, and that’s when metacognition comes into play. Finally, Andy and Troy share the importance of having an active writing practice to coincide with your writing instruction. An author of 14 books, including her recent The Book in Question: Why and How Reading Is in Crisis (Heinemann, 2018), Carol reflects on her years of teaching, and shares strategies for teaching writing and conferring with writers. In particular, she argues that her goal is to help students develop the habits of mind of good writers. “If my teaching results in 36 young writers depending on me,” she believes, “I haven’t done my job.” In this episode, recorded in January 2018, she describes ways in which we can help students interrogate their own texts, as writers, and how to approach writing conferences. Our goal is to send students a message that “you can do this.” As a teacher writer, she also articulates the challenging aspects of the writing process, noting that framing writing as fun is not a strong approach. We know that writing is difficult, and so, too, our students know this. But, as a writer, she argues that “I love having written.” She also talks about the work of Maryanne Wolf and her book, Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World (Harper, 2018), and the need for teaching students noth “either/or,” but “and/both” when it comes to literacy practices. Additionally, she shares her appreciation for the National Writing Project, a network of hundreds of sites and thousands of teachers that support high-quality professional development related to writing instruction.     Troy Hicks Associate Professor of English Education, Former Middle School Teacher (Central Michigan University)     Segment I – Background and Inspiration   Tell your story. Where are you from and how long have you been teaching? What classes have you taught?    – Troy teaches at Central Michigan University. He is also involved in the National Writing Project in his area in Michigan.  To backtrack, he graduated from MSU and taught middle school at a rural school in Concord, Michigan. He eventually went back to MSU to earn his graduate degree and eventually made his way into higher education.     Who has helped you in your journey to become a master teacher?    – He had a mentor from Day 1 at his middle school in Concord. Chris Miller was the 7th grade science teacher and Troy was the 7th grade Language Arts teacher.  Chris was focused on the students. He would joke that he was so student-focused that he didn't begin teaching science until mid-September. When Troy was deciding to stay in the classroom or going to graduate school to pursue Education, Chris gave him the most timely and sympathetic encouragement to pursue goals beyond the four walls of the school.     It is important for other teachers to know that we all have had setbacks in the classroom. Identify an instance in which you struggled as a teacher and explain what you learned from that experience.   – He felt he had read all the right books during his undergraduate experience about reading and writing workshops. When he got into teaching, like many first and second year teachers, suddenly the book became his curriculum. He eventually learned to let go and give students more choice. Ultimately he learned to strike a balance between what he had to do that was mandated by the curriculum and what he felt the students needed or wanted to do.   Why is literacy important? – Troy believes that if we don't frame literacy as a thinking process, then it is really difficult to make the case for literacy with math, science and social studies. We want students to be critical thinker and have substantive conversations.    What is one thing that you love about the classroom?    – The thing that he talks about with his pre-service students and what he took away from his middle school years is the moment of discovery. To sit with a student, conference with him or her, and see the lightbulb go off, is a small moment that he really values.   Segment II — Digging into the Teacher Bag of Goodies While there are a number of classics, Troy tends to recommend the book that he is reading at the moment.Thrive: 5 Ways to (Re)Invigorate Your Teaching is a book that he reviewed. It is written by Meenoo Rami, a young, energetic teacher that is doing great things in the classroom. He found it refreshing, clear and concise.    What is one thing a teacher can do outside the classroom that can pay off inside the classroom? -- Troy believes that you have to take time for yourself. Put it on your calendar because you might not do it. make time to read. Watch the show you've been meaning to watch. Go for walks. You have to invest in yourself .  Is there an internet resource that you can recommend which will help teachers grow professionally? – www.digitalis.nwp.org has layer upon layer of resources. The NWP Digital Is website is an emerging and open knowledge base created and curated by its community of members. We gather resources, collections, reflections, inquiries, and stories about what it means to learn and teach writing in our increasingly digital and interconnected world.    Provide a writing practice that is effective?  – One minute of conferencing is worth 15 minutes of comments on the paper.
