Last week, the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) released its Fiscal Year 2025 Consolidated Annual Report on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, revealing its latest findings involving unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). Among its key findings, AARO's report conveys that the Office continues to collect data on hundreds of objects it cannot yet identify and states that some sightings over sensitive military facilities could represent an "unmitigated threat vector" to U.S. national security. Professor Tim Murithi in this interview explains how Africa has always been a central part of the UFO encounter phenomenon. Murithi is an internationally respected advocate for peace, a member of the Society for UAP Studies, and an affiliate of the International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research, or ICER. He is also head of the Peacebuilding Interventions Programme at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town, South Africa, as well as the Extraordinary Professor of African Studies, at the Centre for African and Gender Studies, University of the Free State, also in South Africa. Murithi has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of peace, security, international justice, governance, and development, and has become an avid scholar of the UAP phenomenon, African folkloric connections to UAP, and the global politics of disclosure. We discuss UFO history in Africa, including the rather prescient scientific knowledge of the Dogon Tribe, E.T.-related Egyptian myths, and the Ariel School event in Zimbabwe, including its investigation by Harvard psychiatrist Dr. John Mack. We drill down on how knowledge that we are not alone may impact the state of our struggling world. Finally, we explore the need for a truth-and-reconciliation movement — such as the one deployed in South Africa to end apartheid — to finally break through what UFO scholar Richard Dolan calls “the truth embargo.”

Joining me for this episode is philosopher Kimberly S. Engels. Kimberly is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Molloy University and her research focuses on existentialism, phenomenology, and ethics. In 2023 she started a new research project on the UAP phenomenon, focusing on the lived conscious experience of individuals who report these kind encounters, and how they integrate these experiences into their understanding of self, other, and world. This work has seen her become Research Director at the John Mack Institute, and Advisory Board Member for the Society for UAP Studies. Phenomenology is the direct investigation and description of phenomena as consciously experienced, without theories about their causal explanation. In the interview I begin by talking with Kimberly about her background and exploring phenomenology in more detail. From there we discuss how its methods can be applied in the of study of extraordinary experiences such as those people have with UAPs/UFOs and also how it can help experiencers understand those events on a personal level. It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a UFO! It's an Iranian mothership! It's a radiation probe! Or maybe it's really just a plane. The wave of alleged noctural drone sightings in New Jersey has led to some wild theories about what the mysterious lights in the sky could be.Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R–N.J.) claimed that the drones were coming from an Iranian "mothership" in the Atlantic Ocean, then retracted his claim after the Pentagon denied it. (The Iranian navy does have a sort of aircraft carrier for drones—and publicly-available satellite imagery shows that it's still sitting in the Persian Gulf.) The mayor of Belleville, New Jersey, claimed the drones were part of a secret search operation for missing radioactive material, although the materials have already been recovered.  Rep. Nancy Mace (R–S.C.) even asked whether it could be aliens from outer space.But there might be a simpler explanation. Gov. Phil Murphy has suggested that at least some of the sightings were just normal air traffic misidentified by over-eager drone spotters. Police documents obtained by Reason under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act back up that theory. Robert Powell, a founding Board member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies, has studied the UFO subject for 17 years. His work is encapsulated in UFOs: A Scientist Explains What We Know (And Don't Know)which provides a scientific rationale for the reality of non-terrestrial craft that are intelligently controlled. Powell begins his book by familiarizing the reader with the history of UFOs and he identifies the more enigmatic and interesting UFO sightings. He examines the characteristics of these sightings that argue against a prosaic explanation: extreme acceleration, electromagnetic interference, bending light, no obvious propulsion mechanisms, and a lack of interaction with the atmosphere. Powell discusses the recent events that have caused our government to change the term from UFO to UAP. Included is information never before released indicating the government possesses not just two videos but five videos from 2015 of UFOs operating in the vicinity of the USS Roosevelt nuclear aircraft carrier. Powell also discuss the extraterrestrial hypothesis considering the thousands of exoplanets that have been discovered in the last twenty years. Powell challenges the reader to consider all the implications that must be considered if intelligent life discovers us first. He looks at how we as individuals and as a society react to UFOs. He documents actions taken by our military that include instances when we have fired on UFOs. Powell argues that it is time for a change in the study of UFOs. The phenomenon has been with us for 75 years and we have learned very little as the decades have passed. The author makes the case for what needs to be done going forward. The solution he proposes will require a paradigm shift in our thinking and his book provides the information needed to understand that paradigm shift. Robert Powell is a founding Board member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU). He was the Director of Research at MUFON from 2007–2017 and created MUFON's Science Review Board in 2012. Robert is one of two authors of the detailed radar/witness report on the “Stephenville Lights” as well as the SCU report “UAP: 2013 Aguadilla, Puerto Rico”. This week I'm reading from Robert Powell's book 'UFOs: A Scientist Explains What We Know (And Don't Know)'.Robert Powell, a founding Board member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies, has studied the UFO subject for 17 years. His work is encapsulated in UFOs: A Scientist Explains What We Know (And Don't Know) which provides a scientific rationale for the reality of non-terrestrial craft that are intelligently controlled.Powell begins his book by familiarizing the reader with the history of UFOs and he identifies the more enigmatic and interesting UFO sightings. He examines the characteristics of these sightings that argue against a prosaic explanation: extreme acceleration, electromagnetic interference, bending light, no obvious propulsion mechanisms, and a lack of interaction with the atmosphere. Powell discusses the recent events that have caused our government to change the term from UFO to UAP. Included is information never before released indicating the government possesses not just two videos but five videos from 2015 of UFOs operating in the vicinity of the USS Roosevelt nuclear aircraft carrier.Powell's later chapters in the book discuss the extraterrestrial hypothesis considering the thousands of exoplanets that have been discovered in the last twenty years. Powell challenges the reader to consider all the implications that must be considered if intelligent life discovers us first. He looks at how we as individuals and as a society react to UFOs. He documents actions taken by our military that include instances when we have fired on UFOs.Powell argues that it is time for a change in the study of UFOs. The phenomenon has been with us for 75 years and we have learned very little as the decades have passed. The author makes the case for what needs to be done going forward. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Marianne Fosheim, a project member from Project Heston who uses her background in 3D modelling and geographic information systems to help map and analyse LIDAR data. She shared some fascinating LIDAR images from Norway that reveal strange anomalies - including circular voids, triangles, and other odd shapes that don't correlate with any expected terrain features or artifacts. We discussed the nature of LIDAR, where to access publicly available datasets, and experiments being done by the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies to identify and eliminate potential sources of error. The conversation highlighted the power of anomalies to lead to new discoveries, and the promise of LIDAR as a tool for seriously studying the UAP phenomenon. In 2008, one or more massive unidentified flying objects were observed moving erratically through the evening skies over Stephenville, Texas. Among the many witnesses were several law enforcement officers who said they observed the giant UFOs, although it was the radar data later obtained from the FAA that seemingly proved there had been such objects in the area, one which flew over the ranch home of then-President George W. On November 23, 2019, a FLIR camera system onboard an RC-26B aircraft with the Air National Guard managed to film an unconventional flying object as it passed over Arizona. Displaying no visible means of propulsion or aerodynamic lift, the odd footage has been touted as one of several examples of Department of Homeland Security videos depicting unidentified aerial phenomena.  This week, joining us to discuss his scientific analysis of what has since been dubbed the "Rubber Duck UAP" is Peter Reali, a researcher with the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies.
