By now you may have heard the term software defined vehicle. But what does it mean? Tesla was the first to make one. Chinese automakers like NIO and Xpeng followed quickly. Most Western OEMs today are still figuring out how to make them. But what exactly is a software-defined vehicle? How do they work? Today I am joined on the Driving With Dunne podcast by John Wall, the chief executive officer at Blackberry QNX. This Ottawa, Canada based company makes some of the most important real-time operating systems and software that power your car, including your digital cockpit and your advanced driver assistance systems. Think of QNX as the master plumber of software systems found in more than 230 million cars on the road today worldwide.

Today, I'm talking to Jim Rowan, the CEO of Volvo Cars. Now, Jim's only been at Volvo for a short time. He took over in 2022 after a decades-long career in the consumer electronics industry. Before Volvo, his two longest stints were at BlackBerry, whose QNX software is used in tons of cars, and then at Dyson, which once tried and failed to make an electric car. Jim and I talked a lot about how that unique experience has influenced how he thinks about the transformational changes happening in the world of cars. For Volvo, the stakes are high. The company has pledged to be all-electric by the end of the decade, and Jim is also making some very different bets on software and revenue than the rest of the car industry. Jim's view is that automakers are undergoing three major shifts all at once: electrification, autonomy, and direct-to-consumer sales. With Volvo, Jim is trying to steer the ship through these changes and come out an EV-only carmaker on the other end. Links: Volvo plans to sell only electric cars by 2030 Volvo's EX90 is a powerful computer that also happens to be an impeccably designed EV Can Polestar design a new kind of car company? Oxide and Friends Twitter Space: August 23rd, 2021The episode formerly known as ℔We've been holding a Twitter Space weekly on Mondays at 5p for about an hour. Even though it's not (yet?) a feature of Twitter Spaces, we have been recording them all; here is the recording for our Twitter Space for August 23rd, 2021.In addition to Bryan Cantrill and Adam Leventhal, speakers on August 23rd included Neal Gompa, Tom Lyon, Laura Abbott, Jeremy Tanner, Matt Campbell, Simeon Miteff and others. VOLVO'S FUTURE EV BATTERIES AIM FOR 1,000 KM OF REAL-WORLD RANGE - Volvo announced on Wednesday that it will implement a wide variety of measures intended to improve electric vehicle batteries for future models. This includes what Volvo refers to as its second-generation EVs, which will start landing in vehicles in the coming years, followed by a third generation to debut around the middle of this decade. - Not only will the battery consist of fewer components overall, it will sport a flat layout that will allow Volvo's EVs to rock a truly flat floor. The automaker hopes to improve energy density by approximately 50% - But it's the third generation where things truly ramp up. Volvo hopes to dramatically reduce the material in each battery, in addition to using its sandwich structure as an integral part of the vehicle's floor, giving the car some added rigidity and further improving efficiency. It's these batteries that Volvo believes will allow 1,000 kilometers (about 621 miles) of real-world range. - The automaker aims to halve the time it takes batteries to go from 10% to 80%. This will likely be done through a combination of 800-volt charging capability, lowering internal resistances and improving thermal management. Bidirectional charging, which allows an electric Volvo to contribute to the power grid, is slated to arrive with the XC90's electric successor in 2022 Original Source : https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volvo-electric-car-battery-research-development/ FUTURE VOLVO CARS TO RUN ON VOLVOCARS.OS - Volvo Cars will take software development in-house as a car's appeal increasingly becomes more defined by software-driven functions and features, rather than traditional automotive attributes. The next generation of pure electric Volvo models, including the company's first SUV on a completely new electric-only technology base, will run on Volvo Cars' own operating system (OS), called VolvoCars.OS, for faster and more flexible development. Coupled with more frequent over-the-air updates to customer cars through their lifetime, the company's aim is to make Volvo cars better every day. VolvoCars.OS will act as an umbrella system for electric Volvo cars. It incorporates the company's various operating systems across the car and the cloud, creating one coherent software OS environment. The underlying operating systems include Android Automotive OS, QNX, AUTOSAR and Linux - VolvoCars.OS gives developers access to in-car features such as vehicle sensor data, user interfaces and cloud-based features such as fleet data, subject to customer consent. This allows developers to create new services and applications for Volvo cars. - Rather than relying on multiple electronic control units around the car that control individual features and systems, an increasing amount of in-house developed software will run in a powerful core computing system in the car. "We are looking at the possibility of doing an IPO before the end of the year," listing shares on the Nasdaq Stockholm exchange, Samuelsson said in an interview on Wednesday. - Samuelsson said Volvo and Geely will continue to share vehicle architectures, combustion powertrains and other components. But the companies will do so at "an arm's length distance," consistent with the way independent companies do business, he said. - In Europe, the company plans to change its retail operations so that customers order new EVs directly from the manufacturer, with dealers paid commissions to deliver them, Samuelsson said. In the U.S., where laws protect existing dealers, Volvo will still sell vehicles through franchised retailers. The growth rate from a low base of 818 (affected by COVID-19-related lockdowns) is 313% year-over-year. That's a pretty amazing result, especially if we compare it with the total volume of 18,958 (up 55.5% year-over-year), because all-electric cars already stand for 17.7% of the total Porsche volume in the U.S. - After the first six months of 2021, Porsche sold some 5,367 Taycans in the U.S. (and 9,911 cumulatively). At the current rate it should hit 10,000 in 2021 and 15,000 cumulatively total by the end of 2021. At the time, it was said that in the future each location would offer between six and twelve charging points with a capacity of 350 kW, a roof, and also comfortable places to stay while charging. - As part of a pilot project with 15 dealers, a booking system will initially be tested that allows Taycan drivers to reserve a charging slot via smartphone. - Audi is another Volkswagen subsidiary currently working on a concept for its own fast-charging network. The core of Audi's approach is ‘premium' HPC charging in combination with a lounge offer. As of May 1, Tesla switched from a radar-based system to a camera-based system it dubbed Tesla Vision as a way to have the Model 3's automatic braking system avoid other vehicles or pedestrians. That change prompted IIHS to remove the Model 3's "Top Safety Pick+" designation last month until the organization could test the new feature. Consumer Reports also dropped its "Top Pick" recommendation for Tesla's best-selling car, and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration no longer lists the Model 3 as having an automatic braking or a front collision warning system. But the IIHS has conducted its own independent tests of the new Tesla system, and given its top rating of "superior" for avoiding other cars, and its second highest rating of "advanced" for avoiding pedestrians. Both ratings were similar to the scores the old system for the Model 3 received. @thefluffy007 A Bay Area Native (Berkeley) I always tell people my computer journey started at 14, but it really started at 5th grade (have a good story to tell about this) Was a bad student in my ninth grade year - almost kicked out of high school due to cutting. Had a 1.7 GPA. After my summer internship turned it around to a 4.0. Once I graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to continue on the path of computers. Majored in Computer Science Graduated with Bachelors and Masters in Computer Science. Graduate Certificate in Information Security and Privacy. Minor in Math. Interested in security from a Yahoo! Group on Cryptography. Liked how you can turn text into gibberish and back again. Became interested in penetration testing after moving to Charlotte, and moonlighted as a QA while a full-stack developer. Co-workers did not want me to test their code because I would always find bugs. Moved into penetration testing space. Always had an interest in mobile, but never did mobile development and decided it wasn’t for me Became interested in bug bounties and noticed that mobile payouts were higher. At this time also completed SANS 575 - Mobile Device Security and Ethical Hacking. Realized the barrier to entry was VERY (almost non-existent) low in Android as it’s open source. Started to learn/expand mobile hacking on my own time The threat exposure is VERY high with mobile hacking. As you have a web app component, network component, and phone component. I always reference a slide from Secure Works. IntroAndroidSecurity download | SourceForge.net ←- link to my virtual machine and Androidx86 emulator Background: **consider this a primer for any class you might teach, a teaser, if you will** Why do we want to be able to reverse engineer APKs and IPKs? Android APKS (Android Packages) holds the source code to the application. If you can reverse this you will essentially have the keys to the kingdom. Developers and companies (if they’re proprietary) will add obfuscation - a technique to make the code unreadable to thwart reverse engineers from finding out their code. What are some of the structures and files contained in APKs that are useful for ppl analyzing binaries? Android applications have to have a MainActivity (written in Java). This activity is the entry point to the application. Android applications also have an AndroidManifest.xml file which is the skeleton of the application. This describes the main activity, intents, service providers, permissions, and what Android operating system can run the application. When testing apps for security, how easy is it to emulate security and physical controls if you’re not on a handset? Pretty easy. You can use an emulator. I must forewarn though - you will need A LOT of memory for it to work effectively. Are there ever any times you HAVE to use a handset? An app that tests something like Android’s Safetynet and won’t run without it? Do they ever want perf testing on their apps? Was thinking about how you check events in logs, battery drain, using apps on older Android/iOS versions? When organizations or developers ask you to test an app, is there anything in particular in scope? Out of scope? How do progressive web apps differ than a more traditional app? Lab setup IntroToAndroidSecurity VM Android Emulator Tools to use Why use them? (free, full-featured) Setup and installation OS-specific tools? Tools used - Frida, Jadx-GUI (or command line), text editor. All of these items are free. No setup required if using my virtual machine :-) These apps are OS specific if you choose Linux or Windows. Callbacks Methodology Decompile the application - can use a tool titled - Apktool (free) Look “under the hood” of the application - Jadx-GUI (Graphical User Interface) or Jadx-CLI (command line) Connect your emulator/device using Android Debug Bridge (adb) Get version of Frida on device Look online to find correct version of Frida **this is important** Start to play around with the tool and see if you receive error messages/prompts. Can then go back to code that was reverse engineered and see where it’s located. Best practices Leave no stones unturned! Meaning you might see something that seems too rudimentary to work - and yet it does. Cert pinning - Typical issues seen Hard-coded passwords, data that is not being encrypted in rest or transit. Blackberry (BB ; BB.TO) For those of you laughing at me thinking of your Blackberry from 2010, Blackberry is no longer a cell phone company, but a software and cyber security company. their QNX software is an operating system for electric vehicles, and is used by 19 of the top 25 EV makers and accounts for 61% of the EV market. The EV market was roughly $5B in 2018, and some estimates have it pegged near $17.77B by 2024. estimates from researchandmarket.com Blackberry IVY is their intelligent vehicle data platform, which will help to manage data and communication between vehicle owners, charging stations and the manufacturers. IVY is set to benefit from the pre-existing partnership Blackberry has established with their QNX system, which is in 175M EVs currently. Blackberry also has a healthy patent portfolio, with recent sales to Huawei to increase cash and invest in their IVY and Blackberry SPARK projects. They are currently in litigation with Facebook over other patents, and the general sentiment on the litigations is that Blackberry is the favorite to come out successful. However, Facebook is a giant with near unlimited funds to spend on litigation so do not count your chickens before they hatch. Full disclosure I do own some BB.TO stock. My price range for adding to my position would be near $10-12 Canadian. I would have interest anywhere under $13 CDN. This would be about $8-10 USD if you are trading the stock on the NYSE. Zack's recently upped their price target on BB to $29, which I personally think is quite rich, but does show you the high end potential this stock could have if the right catalysts fall into place. **All analysis is my own, and these are my own opinions. When it comes to autonomous vehicles, there are followers and there are leaders. QNX, a subsidiary of Blackberry, believes it falls into the latter class. To understand why, but more importantly to get the lay of the autonomous vehicle landscape, I spoke to QNX’s Senior Vice President John Wall in this week’s Five Minutes with…discussion. http://blackberry.qnx.com/en/solutions/industries/automotive/index

Get ready for your moon adventure. Companies are actively working to further technology and vehicles that can take us to the moon. In the show today we will hear about Jeff Bezos’s proposal to NASA and the White House about a craft that can take supplies to the moon in about 10 years. Also, we will talk about what’s new at Facebook and BlackBerry. Show Notes Return to the Moon It looks like we have to wait a little longer to send humans to Mars. But, plans are in motion to create a permanent settlement on the moon instead. Due to NASA's plans to return to the moon and the anticipated support of the Trump administration a few companies are excited to support travel to the moon with new technology and spacecraft. One of the companies that made a proposal is Blue Origin, a space company owned by Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. In a seven-page white paper to NASA and President Trump's transition team the company highlighted its interest in developing a lunar spacecraft. This service would deliver gear for experiments and cargo by mid-2020 but doesn’t involve flying humans. It’s focus is on just cargo missions to help establish a human colony on the moon. “It is time for America to return to the Moon — this time to stay,” Bezos said Bezos announcement came on the heels of SpaceX’s founder Elon Musk who made an announcement earlier in the week that his company planned to fly two private citizens on a tourist trip around the moon by next year. NASA also announced it is considering adding astronauts to the first flight of its Space Launch System rocket and Orion crew capsule. Robert Bigelow, the founder of Bigelow Aerospace, said his company could create a depot that could orbit the moon by 2020, housing supplies and medical facilities, as well as humans. He is glad that the administration seems to be refocusing on the moon. “Mars is premature at this time. The moon is not,” City Guides Facebook recently began rolling out feature called "City Guides" to its iOS app. City Guides gives users a list of cities visited by their friends and along with recommendations on places to eat, where to visit, and where you can stay on a future trip. So now, your friends can know all about that secret get away trip you took last month when you said you were sick. This feature can be found in the Explore tab of the app. After tapping on a city, the app provides a list of friends who have been to the location along with the places they checked into while they were there. So, if you're looking for restaurant or hotel suggestions, it's easy to bookmark the spot right in the app and then send a message to that friend to see what he or she thinks about it. Other parts of this upgrade include a “Places The Locals Go" section that lists popular spots based on each location's Facebook page rating, an upcoming events list in each city and a list of popular attractions. The next time you’re planning a trip, check out this feature as it should make your trip a whole lot more enjoyable, visiting, eating and doing things that have recommended by people you know. BlackBerry’s new approach Nestor Arellano shared some information about chat with BlackBerry’s chief operating officer Marty Beard about the new direction that the company is headed in. BlackBerry’s grand plan is a comprehensive native approach to provide government and enterprise customers with security products and services. It covers five key areas: • Unified endpoint management (you know mobile device management and BES and the like • Embedded software: Think BlackBerry software inside any IoT device from medical instruments to BlackBerry radar for trucks and QNX software for driverless cars • Network: Think messages being served up securely through the BlackBerry NOC • Communications: That will be facilitating more secure messaging and alerts for enterprise and government users • Applications: All about developing app services, software development kits

This week on BSDNow, Allen is away in the UK (For BSDCam), but we still have a full episode for you! Don't miss our interview with This episode was brought to you by Headlines My two year journey to becoming an OS Developer (http://zinascii.com/2016/going-to-joyent.html) A blog post by Ryan Zezeski about how he ended doing OS Development instead of working on application We have featured his posts before, including The illumos SYSCALL Handler (http://zinascii.com/2016/the-illumos-syscall-handler.html) It started in the summer of 2014: I had just left Basho after 3.5 years of working on Riak, when I decided I wanted to become an OS developer. I purchased Solaris Internals, cloned illumos-gate, fired up cscope, and got to work. I hardly knew any C, x86 might as well have been Brainfuck, and, frankly, I knew shit about operating systems. But I was determined. I've always learned best by beating my head against something until it makes sense. I'm not a fast learner; I'm persistent. What others have in ability I make up for in effort. And when it comes to OS internals it's all about work ethic. The more you look, the more you realize it's just another program. The main difference being: it's the program all the other programs run on. My strategy: to pick something, anything, that looked interesting, and write a post describing how it works. I wrote several of these posts in 2014 and 2015. More important, it put me in touch with Roger Faulkner: the creator of truss(1), the Solaris process model, and the real /proc filesystem. At the time I didn't like my interaction with Roger. He explained, in what I would later find out to be his typical gruff manner, that I was wrong; so I concluded he is a prick. But over the years I realized that I was being a brat—he was trying to teach me something and I let my ego get in the way. I've come to view that interaction as a blessing. I interacted with one of the greats, a mentor of my mentor's mentor (a Great Great Mentor). A couple of weeks later something even more surreal happened, at illumos Day 2014. Bryan Cantrill was the last speaker of the day. One of my mentors and someone I admire greatly. He was there to regale us with the story of Joyent's resurrection of lx-branded zones: Linux system call emulation on top of the illumos kernel. But before he would do that he decided to speak about me! I couldn't believe it. I was so overwhelmed that I don't remember most of what he said. I was too busy flipping shit—Bryan Cantrill is on stage, in front of other kernel developers I look up to, saying my name. I was in a dream. It turns out, unknown to me at the time, that he wrote the POSIX queue code for both Solaris and QNX, which I wrote about. He compared me to the great expository technical writers Elliott Organick and Richard Stevens. And it was at this moment that I knew I could do this: I could become an OS developer. Never underestimate the effect kind words can have on someone that looks up to you. There is a lot more to the story, and it is definitely worth the read The story then goes on to talk about his recent run in with Bryan Cantrill > A week from now my two year journey to become an OS developer comes to an end; and a new chapter begins. I don't know what specific things I'm going to work on, but I'm sure it will push me to the limit. I look forward to the challenge. *** Version 1.0 of the Lumina Desktop released (https://lumina-desktop.org/version-1-0-0-released/) After 4 years of development, Lumina Desktop has now hit version 1.0! This release brings with it a slew of new features and support: Completely customizable interface! Rather than having to learn how to use a new layout, change the desktop to suit you instead! Simple shortcuts for any application! The “favorites” system makes it easy to find and launch applications at any time. Extremely lightweight! Allows applications to utilize more of your system hardware and revitalizes older systems! Multiple-monitor support! Each monitor is treated as an independent entity – making it great for presentation systems which use a temporary monitor or for workstations which utilize an array of monitors for various tasks. While originally developed on PC-BSD, it already has been ported to a variety of different platforms, including OpenBSD, DragonFly, NetBSD, Debian and Gentoo Lumina has become the defacto desktop environment for TrueOS (Formerly PC-BSD), and looks like will provide a solid framework to continue growing desktop features. *** n2k16 hackathon report: Ken Westerback on dhclient, bridges, routing and more (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20160804200232) Next up, we have a report from Ken Westerback talking about the recent OpenBSD hackathon in Prague He starts by telling us about the work in bpf: First order of business, stsp@'s weird setup involving bridges and multiple dhclient clients. A bit of bpf(4) programming to restrict dhclient to handling ethernet packets unicast to its interface worked. Cool. Unfortunately it turned out some lazy dhcp servers always use ethernet broadcasts just because some lesser, non-OpenBSD clients ignore unicast packets until they have configured IP. Classic chicken and egg. So this was backed out just before 6.0. Sigh. Next up, he talks about an idea he had on the flight over, specifically with regard to how DHCP leases are stored, and how keeping the SSID information with them could speed up re-connection times, by only trying leases for current SSID's connected. After a day or so of hacking, it was working! However for $REASONS it was shelved for post 6.0, bummer! He then discusses an on-going project with Peter Hessler on passing along relevant PIDs in response to routing messages generated by kernel from ioctl events. This is something they've been hacking at, in order to allow dhclient to recognize its own routing messages. Sounds like they are both still works-in-progress. However, Ken did get something in for 6.0: Diving back into dhclient code I discovered that in situations where multiple offers were received the unused offers were not being declined and discarded. Despite a clear comment saying that's what was being done! Thus dhclient might gradually use up more and more memory. And possibly be retrying offers that should have been discarded. The fix for this did make 6.0! Yay! In Memoriam Roger Faulkner (https://www.usenix.org/memoriam-roger-faulkner) USENIX has re-released Roger Faulkner's original paper on /proc as a free download The UNIX community recently lost one of its original pioneers, Roger Faulkner, whom one commenter described as “The godfather of post-AT&T UNIX” In his memory, the USENIX group as re-released his original paper on the /proc file-system from 1991. Roger worked in many area's of UNIX, however the process file system /proc was his special baby. “/proc began as a debugger interface superseding ptrace(2) but has evolved into a general interface to the process model.” The original /proc only had a file for each process, not a directory. "Data may be transferred from or to any valid locations in the process's address space by applying lseek(2) to position the file at the virtual address of interest followed by read(2) or write(2)." Processes could be controlled using IOCTLs on the file As the USENIX article states: Roger believed that terrible things were sometimes required to create beautiful abstractions, and his trailblazing work on /proc embodies this burden: the innards may be delicate and nasty ("vile," as Roger might say in his distinguished Carolinian accent)—but the resulting abstractions are breathtaking in their power, scope and robustness. RIP Roger, and thanks for the wonderful UNIX legacy you've left us all. Interview - Myke Geiger - myke@servernorth.net (mailto:myke@servernorth.net) / @mWare (https://twitter.com/mWare) Using FreeBSD at a DSL/Cable ISP *** News Roundup New options in bsdinstall - some sysctls and date/time settings (https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/4vxnw3/new_options_in_bsdinstall_some_sysctls_and/) bsdinstall in FreeBSD 11.0 will feature a number of new menus. The first, well allow you to set the date and time. Often on computers that have been in storage, or some embedded type devices that have no RTC, the date will be wildly wrong, and ntpd will refuse to run until the date is correctly set. This feature makes it easy to enter the date and time using dialog(1) The second menu, inspired by the existing ‘services' menu, offers a number of ‘hardening' options This menu allows users to easily enable a number of security features, including: Hide processes running as other users/groups Disable reading the kernel message buffer and debugging processes for unprivileged users Randomize the PID of newly created processes Enable the stack guard Erase /tmp at boot Disable remote syslog Disable sendmail All of these options are off by default, so that an install done with the installer will be the same as an install from source, or an upgrade. A number of these options are candidates to become on-by-default in the future, so the hope is that this menu will get more users to test these features and find any negative interactions with applications or general use, so they can be fixed. *** Rawrite32: the NetBSD image writing tool (https://www.netbsd.org/~martin/rawrite32/) Martin of the NetBSD project has released a new version of his USB imaging tool, rawrite32 For those who've not used this tool before, it is a Windows Application that allows writing NetBSD images directly to USB media (other other disk media) This update brings with it support for writing .xz file, and binary signing This may come in handy for writing other OS images to memory sticks as well, especially for those locked into a windows environment who need to switch. *** ZFS-Snap-Diff -- A pretty interface for viewing what changed after a ZFS snapshot (https://github.com/j-keck/zfs-snap-diff) There are lots of nice little utilities to help create and maintain your ZFS snapshots. However today we have something unique to look at, ‘zfs-snap-diff'. What makes it unique, is that it ships with a built-in golang / angularjs GUI for snapshot management It looks very powerful, including a built-in diff utility, so you can even see the changes in text-files, in addition to downloading files, restoring old versions and more. Its nice to see so many ZFS utilities starting to take off, and evolve file-management further. *** Dtrace Conf 2016 Event Videos (https://www.joyent.com/about/events/2016/dtrace-conf) The videos from Dtrace.conf 2016 have been posted Some highlights: Useful DTrace Intro CTF Everywhere Distributed DTrace DTrace for Apps DTrace json() subroutine Implementing (or not) fds[] in FreeBSD OpenDTrace DTrace performance improvements with always-on instrumentation D Syntactic Sugar DTrace and Go, DTrace and Postgres dtrace.conf(16) wrap-up by Bryan Cantrill (https://www.joyent.com/blog/dtrace-conf-16-wrap-up) Once again, it was an eclectic mix of technologists — and once again, the day got kicked off with me providing an introduction to dtrace.conf and its history.
